Saw him on the Excitable Boy tour. The audience went nuts and wouldn't let him go. They did the usual encores, but after two or three there was a long delay. Even when the house lights came on, the crowd wouldn't stop clapping so the band came out rather awkwardly but finally got organized and did another song. They left the stage obviously in gratitude and it happened again! A fifth encore--this time an awkward huddle while they decided on a song. When that one was done, the crowd couldn't believe what had happened! So they called them back for another encore! Warren came out and played a song at the piano by himself. By this time the applause was as much a thank you as a call for more. They closed the stage curtain to try and give the audience a hint, but the applause continued. Warren and the band came out a seventh time in front of the curtain to say thank you and they didn't have any songs left!
And probably out of breath, too! Saw The Band give such a performance once. They apologized profusely at the end that they physically couldn’t continue.

As life had it I was in Melbourne Australia in a Hilton Hotel and he was playing with the Little River band (1990), I knew the keyboard player for LRB and he introduced me to Warren. No offense to Billy Joel, but Warren will always be the true Piano Man to me. It's because of him that I picked up a keyboard and started to seriously try my hand at music. One of the world's finest.
I am very late to the party. Always knew about Warren through Werewolves of London and from Linda Ronstadt covers. I am now talking a deep dive into his music and what wonderful journey!! ❤❤❤
What a great show, when Warren was near his peak of popularity. As the years passed, the record sales slowed, and the audiences and venues got smaller, but Warren never lost his edge. In his last years, I heard him say in an interview, with his classic dark humor, that he did not think of himself as a has-been rock star, but more as a really successful folk singer. He was one of a kind!
Warren Zevon was supporting his 1982 album "The Envoy" on this tour. The record failed to build on the audience he'd gained from his two previous hit albums, "Excitable Boy" and "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School." Five years later, his comeback album "Sentimental Hygiene" sold okay but Warren Zevon's only hit album outside of "Excitable Boy" and "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School" would be his last, "The Wind."
I met Warren in '95...the summer he was hangin with Carl Hiaasen , working on his FLORIDA-FLAVOURED ALBUM "MUTINEER". BTW, the album was named for a restaurant where the girls from my office and I lunched a couple days a week. Genius that he was, Warren had this problem of finding places where he was supposed to meet up with friends. Thats how I met him.. While he was waiting for Carl to rescue him at a Borders bookstore. I came away from that 10-15 minute contact with the Force Of Nature that was Warren Zevon utterly besotted. If I could have seen that less than a decade later he would be gone...I think I'd have focused more on the ephemeral things like the scent he wore..the flash and dazzle of that incredible grin of his....and bugger the book of poetry I had picked up. ICARUS FLEW TOO CLOSE TO THE FLORIDA SUN.
Grew up in Nj - my uncle lived in cali in late 70s. Was always hungry for that next album. He brought me a copy of Excitable Boy, put it on my phonograph w giant headphones. The rest was history. Had the pleasure of seeing WZ over 40 times through the ups and downs. Always slayed me to the core. Last show was in Annapolis Md on my birthday - during his second to last album- his encore was wind beneath my wings which he sang with utmost sincerity. I Did not know he was sick at the time but he must have known as his edge was way more serious than all previous shows. His last two albums are fucking gems, no one writes songs like that anymore. While never mainstream he deserved a lot more recognition than he received. He is my go to on the darkest of days and the brightest of days. Dude was beyond genius. Let’s keep passing his music on, because he was an American treasure.. Keep him in our hearts for a long while..
@@zeldafreak1975 Im 16 and am sad that my generation only listens to rap... I only have a few friends that actually like "older" music. But yea, Zevon rules. Easily the greatest singer/songwriter of all time, in my opinion.

How can anyone who loves music not love Warren Zevon? This man was a brilliant musician who gave the special gift of his music to generations past and, I hope, he will be appreciated by generations to come.

He was great at shining a light on the seedier side of humanity and giving voice to all kinds of underworld characters and situations. His songs took the opportunity to poetically, humorously and intelligently tell stories that tend to get overlooked (Viet Nam, mercenary killers, drug addiction, rape and murder) because they make us all squeemish. Its 7 Sep 2023. 20 years ago already since we lost this brilliant man and his genius talent. Saw him in Adelaide, Australia in 1990..? if i remember correctly, and it was one of the BEST shows ever. Back of an Aussie pub, no more than 60 odd people and we were, up front, eyeball to eyeball. Visceral, incredible and unforgettable. Thank you Mr Zevon hope you're having a drink with Roland. Cheers. When Paul Shaffer was not available for the Letterman show they brought Zevon in. He wrote out all the charts. The guy is a brilliant songwriter, was an accomplished musician and was a great performer.
I just happened upon Warren Zevon a few months ago, and already I'm addicted. Scratch that- I'm on a full blown Zevon kick to beat all Zevon kicks. I can't tell you how many times I can listen to "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" without even thinking of turning on the radio, just so I can listen to modern tecchy music. What with the rebellious insanity of the Stones, the sax-driven rocking of the E-Street Band, and the Police's strumming dignity, Warren was the growling, deep-voiced, piano playing artist that wasn't afraid to bring death to one of his songs. This concert is a great example of classic Warren. He'd howl at the moon to be heard, and boy, aren't we glad we listened?
Rock-n-Roll is dead in 2023. Doesn’t get better than this, kids. If your jaw isn’t on the floor you have no right stepping through the door. Warren Zevon!!! Wow.
Sept. 2003. I got off a C130 at Balad Airbase, IRAQ. 120 degrees, dust blowing, military vehicles scurrying around me, a surreal setting. Walking across the tarmac, mind on sensory overload, a blue air force pickup truck w/ a camper shell crossed my path. Written in the dust on the camper shell was "Send Lawyers, Guns and Money" I will never forget that. Warren would have smiled...
Just goes to prove "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus". What a treat for you. Been a fan since the late 70's when I heard him on some college radio station.

I don't know how I ever missed this. Never got to see Warren in person, this is the next best thing. Great to see him in his prime, with a killer tight band!
He's insulted too many of the supposed rock & roll elitists that control TR&RHOF, starting with Jann W. He had more musical talent in one finger than most who are involved or even within. Nuff said.
So many good concerts at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. Wherever you are Warren Zevon I hope you Rock steady with Roland at your side. Blessings. You are missed.
A great loss. We miss you, Warren. Thank you, Jackson Browne, for seeing the talent your friend Warren possessed, and for you talking Warren into coming back to the US and helping him get his music out for his fans to enjoy.
I return to this concert repeatedly. It always makes me want to play my A/E 12-string and my wife's piano! Warren is always enjoyed. Warren is always missed.
I don't like to throw the word "genius" around randomly. But this guy's lyrics are so poignant and evocative. An incredible talent taken away from us much too soon.
Fantastic recording of a great show by an immortal and fun artist. If he'd only done "Lawyers, Guns and Money" he'd still be immortal in my book. Miss him heaps.
But you have it too! You’re as close to Warren Zevon as I ever got by watching/listening to this. Recorded music by truly great musicians and songwriters is a thrill.
Seriously, the only artist who could put the word "brucellosis" into a song and make it work. So sad his demons took over his life for so long, and that cancer took him away way too soon. But he left us such beautiful songs, and that's forever.
I saw him in the early 80’s at the chestnut cabaret in philadelphia. I guess it was when he was living just a few blocks away. I was standing about 6 feet from him for the whole show. He is a legend.
I’ve watched this whole show about ten times now, it gets better every time. This man and this backing band are fucking INCREDIBLE! I wish he would have lived longer to make more music
A very special rock concert. if you like rock and don't love this you'd better watch it again, and again til you do. Sensitivity, power, humour, heartache all that and much, much more, as Mr Zevon usually delivered on stage, till the end.
An ultimate example of an artist having a total connection with the audience. One of my all time heroes. I did get to meet him once, and he was the coolest.
Jeeesus! Warren was really something else. His slightly twisted genius caught me when Werewolf’s hit the charts. I was totally sold thereafter. He was just too good for mainstream success.
Wish I was able to see him with a band. I only saw him in the mid-90’s in Boston at The Paradise and he was solo, maybe one other musician. Still great though.
Very cool that a vid like this is out in the public domain. So many people missed Zevon entirely or link him only to Werewolves. He was an amazing songwriter, an incredibly high-energy performer and his band was always a Who's Who of great session players. If you need a good live recording for your own, try Stand in the Fire.
Saw Warren for the first time a few months after this show, at the Roxy in West Hollywood. He was brought back for a genuine extra encore, after the houselights had been turned on. He seemed genuinely touched (and not outwardly frightened) by the intensity of the response.
The first thing I thought after listening to WZ for a while was, "Man! This guy's been reading my mail!" He never fails to delve further than is sometimes "comfortable" in his lyrics to the point where I would think: "I thought I was the only one that has felt like that." Gone too soon, Play on WZ.
So I knew this dude who once went to pick up his date for prom. His date's Father had 'Excitable Boy' playing while he sat on his recliner with a shotgun laying across his lap. That's one good Dad. A father-in-law worth having haha
Love the Cadillac Ranch cover. Rock and roll staple that all can relate to. But This guy also wrote "Veracruz" - what a song, so rich with history. Who else could do that? Lots of historical and topical references in his verses. C'mon: a song dedicated to Philip Habib! Who else would or could do that? And play it at a rock concert and get people to like it! Only Zevon. Credit to Dave Letterman for his promotion of Warren. Letterman's show had amazing musical guests; everyone who mattered from the era. And I think Dave liked Warren best.
I was down in front at that great show Capitol Theatre is long gone in HEAVEN Warren Strikes up the band " IF YOU BELIVE IN FOREVER THAN LIFE IS JUST A ONE NIGHTSTAND"
My three favorite albums from Zevon include Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School, of which this concert featured much material. It was a criminally underrated album that was very much Warren Zevon's sound in one microcosm. I'm glad people are finding this concert and realizing how much butt Warren kicked. He's got an untouchable place in this man's heart.
The best thing I can say that others can't; This makes me feel alive. I'm 50 as of 8/21/17 and I'm right in the demo I guess. When I'm down, I turn down the lights, pour one or three drinks and put this on the big screen and it's truly inspiring. I'm back by popular demand! HEY! *Makes me laugh every single time*
Amen Brother (or sister)! I am mesmerized by this guy, can't get enough. One of the TRUE GREATS and yet so under appreciated. And that's too bad because those who don't realize and explore his vast works are missing out so bad on an amazing life experience. A million thanks to everyone responsible for getting all these great WZ performances on youtube. My wife would curse you because of all the time I spend listening, watching, rocking and rolling and loving every minute.
His speaking voice is a little rough and gruff but when he sings, his heart takes hold of his voice. Takes on a different inflection with each song adding to the beauty of the music and lyrics. Simply amazing. 😊😊
A special musical force Warren was. Kind of like melding the writing of Dylan and Hunter S. Thompson into a thinking man's rebel rocker like Paul Westerberg. He is so missed.
A lot of obvious references come to mind: Dylan, Springsteen, Waits, Cohen plus the pulp fiction writers he devoured, but remains unique - nobody else could have written these songs. Plus, when on form, one of the great live acts - he leaves it all out there on the stage - that's quite a legacy. 👏👏👏 “I got to be Jim Morrison a lot longer than he did.”
Saw him on the Excitable Boy tour. The audience went nuts and wouldn't let him go. They did the usual encores, but after two or three there was a long delay. So many good concerts at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. Wherever you are Warren Zevon I hope you Rock steady with Roland at your side. Blessings. You are missed.
I saw many great shows there, miss that venue
this guy could write , his songs are perfect .
A great loss. We miss you, Warren.
Thank you, Jackson Browne, for seeing the talent your friend Warren possessed, and for you talking Warren into coming back to the US and helping him get his music out for his fans to enjoy.
With all the things a person could do with time travel, the only thing I would do is attend one of his concerts and come back with a T-shirt.
I return to this concert repeatedly. It always makes me want to play my A/E 12-string and my wife's piano! Warren is always enjoyed. Warren is always missed.
It just breaks me up the more I watch his videos the more sad I get . There is so much emotion in all his songs.
His clean, sharp, beats and lyrics… intense passion is contagious. Forever one my favorites. Thank you for this.
This was a great performance by Warren and his band.
"enjoy every sandwich"
RIP Mr. Zevon.
Damn, what a thrill it is to see Warren perform. How I wish I could have seen him live.
I was fortunate enough to see him 5 or 6 times, with backup musicians and also solo, it was tremendous every time!
Miss you a lot , Warren.
I saw and heard Warren in Trondheim Norway on February 17th, 1988. A tight and crowded venue. He was "out of this world".
we did - and he was much better than this
I have no words ... except genius ...
I don't like to throw the word "genius" around randomly. But this guy's lyrics are so poignant and evocative. An incredible talent taken away from us much too soon.
A bit like Frank Zappa, in a kind of odd way...( I'm referring to their musical genius, so I agree in that respect )
genius might be an understatement
Can a non-genius recognize "genius"?
Fantastic recording of a great show by an immortal and fun artist. If he'd only done "Lawyers, Guns and Money" he'd still be immortal in my book. Miss him heaps.
I hope you older folk appreciate how lucky you were to have music like this.
they don't. they just like to act intitled and whine
This is the most intelligent thing i ever heard a child say.
But you have it too! You’re as close to Warren Zevon as I ever got by watching/listening to this. Recorded music by truly great musicians and songwriters is a thrill.
@@jramsey9690 definitely cool to be able to see clear videos versus maybe a chewed up tape or something like that
HA...I saw him live, and I'll bet I'm twice your age. 😁
Had a beer with him that night when he came out before the show to use the phone on the corner.
Damn. I miss Warren!
We all miss Warren my brother
He died when I was only 6 months old. I'm sad I never got to see him
Warren Zevon - vocals, guitars, piano; Randy Brown - guitar, vocals; Joe Daniels - drums; Larry Larson - bass; John Wood - lead guitar, vocals
wasnt that JD SOuther somewhere in there?
Thanks very much. I like to see credit given where credit is due.
Those guys were pros.
Waddy Watchel should be in there somewhere.
One helluva band !
I'd love to see him turning his tremendous skills and jaundiced eye to the events of 2020!
I’ve watched this whole show about ten times now, it gets better every time. This man and this backing band are fucking INCREDIBLE! I wish he would have lived longer to make more music
Man I miss him so much. It was my good fortune to see him twice in small venues in the day. What a rocker!
I never appreciated him while he was alive...enjoy every sandwich, indeed!
What a talent....
I saw him in a small club in LA in 1986, Jackson Brown played with him , it was a great great experience in my life.
Warren Zevon was one of the best songwriters and performers ever!
So glad we have great concert footage of Warren performing with such brilliance and passion. Miss you, brother...
A very special rock concert. if you like rock and don't love this you'd better watch it again, and again til you do. Sensitivity, power, humour, heartache all that and much, much more, as Mr Zevon usually delivered on stage, till the end.
OMG! That version of "Cadillac Ranch" is worth its weight in gold! Thanks for posting all this!
I had the biggest "NO WAY!" smile on my face when I heard those first chords
Lara Carter u got that right!!! I thought the stage was going to catch fire!!!
Rock’n’Roll
An ultimate example of an artist having a total connection with the audience. One of my all time heroes. I did get to meet him once, and he was the coolest.
No one like him. Miss him. Such a great songwriter and performer. So lucky to have seen him several times.
Holy cow Zevon could put on an AWESOME show. Guy has so much energy, not mention an excellent body of work. This is true rock n roll right here. RIP
I was at this specific show, and I'll never forget the audience reaction when he finished "Roland..." One of my most memorable concert moments ever.
The sheer power of Warrens music, played by him and his awesome band, on full display here..we miss you Warren!!!
Absolutely brilliant ... and here he is playing in his prime !! I've been listening to Warren since the 1970s. A genius songwriter
Jeeesus! Warren was really something else. His slightly twisted genius caught me when Werewolf’s hit the charts. I was totally sold thereafter. He was just too good for mainstream success.
An artist I'd forgotten about, big thanks to UA-cam for recommending me this. The best of his stuff is very good indeed.
Absolutely brilliant performance!
Wish I was able to see him with a band. I only saw him in the mid-90’s in Boston at The Paradise and he was solo, maybe one other musician. Still great though.
i wish i was there and time would loop forever.
A great and versatile talent gone too soon
Damn. I miss Warren Zevon. Brilliant man,one of my all time favorite songwriters
Very cool that a vid like this is out in the public domain. So many people missed Zevon entirely or link him only to Werewolves. He was an amazing songwriter, an incredibly high-energy performer and his band was always a Who's Who of great session players. If you need a good live recording for your own, try Stand in the Fire.
very cool! i’m actually afraid of losing it, been meaning to look up how to save it forever lol
This concert is proof that warren zevon was on top of his game and I was there to see this concert.
For many years, the most I could say of any musician is "I like them almost as much as Warren Zevon." He's the tippy-top!
Ok I love that version of Certain Girl
I have watched this time after time. It never gets old. What a great concert!!!
Saw Warren for the first time a few months after this show, at the Roxy in West Hollywood. He was brought back for a genuine extra encore, after the houselights had been turned on. He seemed genuinely touched (and not outwardly frightened) by the intensity of the response.
I was blessed to see you in Youngstown, OHIO at the AGORA THEATER . RIP WARREN!
The first thing I thought after listening to WZ for a while was, "Man! This guy's been reading my mail!" He never fails to delve further than is sometimes "comfortable" in his lyrics to the point where I would think: "I thought I was the only one that has felt like that." Gone too soon, Play on WZ.
he was never under-appreciated by his fans. i knew gold apparent hearing his words n musica from day one.
So I knew this dude who once went to pick up his date for prom. His date's Father had 'Excitable Boy' playing while he sat on his recliner with a shotgun laying across his lap. That's one good Dad. A father-in-law worth having haha
I just really missed Lawyers, Guns and Money
Wasn't there unfortunately, but this is one of the best concerts I"ve ever seen.
As with many of the greats, I discovered him late. He was a genius, both in music and intellect. Bless Up!
Warren Zevon was a true legend, r.i.p
Love the Cadillac Ranch cover. Rock and roll staple that all can relate to. But This guy also wrote "Veracruz" - what a song, so rich with history. Who else could do that? Lots of historical and topical references in his verses. C'mon: a song dedicated to Philip Habib! Who else would or could do that? And play it at a rock concert and get people to like it! Only Zevon. Credit to Dave Letterman for his promotion of Warren. Letterman's show had amazing musical guests; everyone who mattered from the era. And I think Dave liked Warren best.
Truly amazing concert and full tribute to the band, Warren never sounded better!
I was down in front at that great show Capitol Theatre is long gone in HEAVEN Warren Strikes up the band " IF YOU BELIVE IN FOREVER THAN LIFE IS JUST A ONE NIGHTSTAND"
I've been listening to all types of music all my life and I ain't heard anything better than this.Takes my breath away.

I'm almost 60. I got to live through his music in real-time. I'm eternally grateful for that.
“I got to be Jim Morrison a lot longer than he did.”
The man had spine and stones, and he did it with class and style.
