    A good budget CPU for Windows XP "overkill" machine is an i3 2120 with hyperthreading disabled, 2 cores at 3.3Ghz with nice performance, most games only use 2 cores anyway as you can see in MSI Afterburner overlay. Pair it with a GTX 560 (or similar) and you can run all XP era games at maximum resolution/details and still use Windows 10 for general tasks. Great video 👌

      Thank you!
      The i3 2120 was inside one of my past computers, and I also had an MSI GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II, great video card indeed.
      I'm planning to upgrade the system to a GTX 960 and maybe a faster i5 Ivy Bridge (3470 or 3570).

      Valve was good with us, you can copy the HL2 folder installed with Steam from your modern PC, right into Windows XP, it has no DRM, it does not require Steam to run.
      There are other games that can be just copied to XP: Doom 3, Dungeon Siege 2...here is the big list:

    For Doom 3 & Quake 4 instead of vsync I'd recommend setting your own fps cap via something like an old version of MSI Afterburner with Rivatuner Server Statistics installed alongside it & making a profile for the exe of the game setting it between 65 - 80 fps.
    Also might be able too push that monitor you are using too 74 - 85 hz if you mess about a bit with custom resolutions & adjust scaling options if needed.

      The problem with Doom 3 over 60 FPS is that the game speeds up, do you think that if I'll be using your solution, the game will run at 100% speed, even over 60 FPS?

    Very nice system. I think I ran an even more overpowered windows XP system, with an intel i7 980x, X58 motherboard, triple channel 3x1GB ram (it's funny how disproportionate the ram is), a Sapphire 7970 Ghz edition (3GB again - the initial video card was a nvidia 295GTX that I ran for the first 2 years of the system) and a raid 0 of 3 velociraptors (no failure in almost 8 years until I couldn't stand the noise and heat anymore).

    • @MidnightGeek99
      @MidnightGeek99  2 роки тому +1

      Well, you had some choice components there, and if I'm not mistaken, the 7970 was the strongest single-GPU card from ATI that had official support for Windows XP.
      I think that no failure in 8 years for Raid 0 with Velociraptors is a world record, you should apply to Guinness World Records :)
      Have you encountered any issues / incompatibilities / oddities with Win XP games?

    • @TechLab47
      @TechLab47 2 роки тому

      @@MidnightGeek99 "oddities with Win XP games" - Yes indeed. I even had an hierarchy of graphics cards that can play NFS Porsche. The last Radeon is the 5000 series. And I can vouch for the 200 Series from Nvidia. (I think it goes all the way to 400 series) NFS Porsche is a little odd as it runs fine on Windows 10 with an old enough graphics card. Red Alert 2 also had issues. Steam's Return to Castle Wolfenstein had really low framerates, it was embarrassing. Other games ran fine (GTA, NFS, Farcry, Command & conquer) nothing in particular that a new driver didn't fix.
      Is it that common for failures with the Raid 0? I had only 2 Velo my first two years. Then sometimes in 2012 or 2013 I upgraded the system: added a third velociraptor, replaced the 295GTX with the 7970 and added another 3X 4GB ram making it a grand total of 15Gb of ram, everybody was correcting me saying I had 16Gb :)). Also made the system dual boot XP and windows 7. In 2018 swapped the 7970 for a 1080Ti and finally put windows XP to rest on this machine. That's how I got into the retro business, I had to play Porsche and a decent framerate Wolfenstein.

    • @MidnightGeek99
      @MidnightGeek99  2 роки тому +2

      @@TechLab47 NFS Porsche is a very "sad" game, it needs the perfect environment to run, he has very few friends...for example, CPUs over 2.2 / 2.3 GHz are not its friends.
      Actually, AMD has drivers for XP up to the HD 7000 series, and Nvidia up to GTX 970.
      Raid 0 simply means that if any on the drives fail, the entire Raid will fail, and considering that you had 3 HDDs, for a long period of time, that spinned like crazy at 10000 RPMs, you got lucky :)
      I got into the retro stuff because the mouse cursor does not work in Dungeon Siege 2, on Windows 10 :))

    • @TechLab47
      @TechLab47 2 роки тому +1

      @@MidnightGeek99 Well, I have to say that you have even less of a reason to get into retro :)).(It doesn't work in compatibility mode?) I have to say that I never noticed the 2.2/2.3 Ghz barrier for Porsche and I did finish it several times on my i7. As long as you have one of the video cards below 480GTX or HD5870 it doesn't matter the operating system at least that's my conclusion. I'm currently running it on the 1080Ti (and a Ryzen9 that often boosts over 5Ghz) with the 4k patch ...that's actually switching it to the glide driver. I plan on making a clip about the range of hardware that game can be run on.
      About the raid 0 it's pretty sure I wasn't that lucky.(I usually am not, when something can break...it usually breaks for me) I put my faith in that raid more than I put it on a new SSD and it never failed me. Those velociraptors are something else. By the time I had given up on the raid0 I had 5 similar harddrives and a couple of weeks ago I got another one. I plan on making a video and adding 1 harddrive at a time and rebuilding the raid0 and see the performance increase.

    2:47 _Standard insertion for a nonstandard motherboard. Go ahead, Geek. Slot the board into the chassis._
    As for Half-Life 2 vs Doom 3 debate, I'd go with HL2 since like you said, it offers more environments, there is a sense of time passing with levels having different day / night skyboxes, there's more color etc. Doom 3 on the other hand is just the same looking corridor over and over, throwing the same handful of enemies and tricks. I think Quake 4 / Prey 2006 did a better job with the engine :)

      I totally agree with you on HL2 vs D3, objectively speaking HL2 has more things going for it, that's why my take on Doom 3 is purely subjective, and on top of it, it also has a huge dose of nostalgia, as Doom 3 gave me some fond memories in 2004 / 2005.
