About this video :
Aimed at the beginner, in this video we discuss the benefits of both manual and auto focus to help us take better photos. We feature both Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras but the tips will work on any current Digital SLR or Mirrorless camera.

Great tutorial! I find myself using BOTH manual and Autofocus at different times...your information was very helpful! THANKS
Thank you so much for this video its perfect👍
Thank you SO MUCH for this. I have experience with Canon I just needed to brush up on settings and I really thought my camera wasn't working in manual focus COMPLETELY forgetting about a zoom ring omg 😅 thank you for this reminder
Wow! You explained it direct to the point. Thank you.
Thank you for this amazing video!!! I was so worried that there was something wrong with my lens! Amazing explanation specially for beginners!
Thanks Paul - I keep your instructional videos in a “Photo Instructional” folder on my iPhone for reference. They have saved my bacon more than once! Thanks again!
Same here...I just bought Nikon D5600 this is on point!! He is a rare teacher, he made what’s complicated simple Thank you
Thank you, hope you are enjoying your D5600 - a cool camera.
Hey are u still using the camera ? And which mode do u use?
I was wondering how to use this feature. Thank you very much.
I was struggling to find the focus ring in my canon camera with kit lens. I almost thought that my lens had manual focus option but no focus ring. you showed me that it's in the front edge of the lens. thank you so much ❤
Glad I could help! 👏
Great instructional video. Very well explained. I learned how to focus using the live view mode and digital zoom on my Canon.
Glad to be of help Rene. Thanks for watching.
THANK YOU!!
I really like the way you explain things!
Thanks for the camera explanation man. That help me out. Apreciate
Hello Paul,
I’ve learnt a ton about shooting with DSLR from your channel. You really provide the best tips and tutorials any beginner or pro would always appreciate...
I’d utterly appreciate it if you could touch on exposure metering and also a little bit more between evaluative/matrix and spot metering modes; which is more consistently useful to a photographer who’s concerned with not blowing out their backgrounds, Paul.
I will keep your suggestion in mind for a future video - thank you for the suggestion and for supporting my channel Allyne 👍👍
I'm used to manual focus/manual exposure 35mm film SLR's. Recently acquired a Fujifilm X100F digital camera. Still use it in manual focus/manual exposure setting mode 90% of the time primarily due to habit. The only time I set it for 'auto everything' mode is for when I know I might not have time to fiddle with focusing/exposure settings (like candids at a party or something) or when I ask somebody who is not familiar with manually-operating cameras to take my photo. And generally the auto focus images taken with my X100F are in equally sharp focus as if I focused it manually myself. However yesterday I was reminded to let the autofocus mechanism readjust..took a shot of a friend, didn't like the pose and took another quick shot immediately and that shot was not in satisfactory focus. Lesson? You do have to allow a brief bit of time for the camera to readjust focus..press the shutter button lightly, wait very briefly for the 'beep' indicating proper focus, then take the shot.
I have a Canon Sl2 and never knew about digital zoom. Thx for the tutorial!!!
You are very welcome, thanks for watching.
Extremely helpful for a beginner like me!

Topnotch advice as always, Paul! I just found out about the digital zoom function now 😂😂😂 I have the other functions down pat thanks to your previous videos for beginners. It's especially easier for me because in some of these you used the Nikon D3400 😊 Keep them coming!
Thanks Daniel - more videos coming 👍👍

Hii Paul!
I'm a beginner in photography and I find your videos quite useful thanks for that! I have couple of problems about getting sharp images. I would like to get your opinion about couple of photos that I've taken. Can you help me with that?
Nice manual Focus TNKS
Thank you for watching 👍
Hi Paul, What a great channel, you seem to explain things so that anyone new to photography ( like me,) can still understand, keep up the good work, thank you !
I've just bought a Canon 800D ( I'm from the UK ) and as previously mentioned extremely new to photography and DSLR's especially ... could you please tell me if there is a digital ( or optical for that matter ) zoom facility on my new 800D for "pictures" ? I can find it for the video but not for taking pictures ?
Thanks in anticipation ... Jimmy
Hi James. On the back of the camera you will find two small round buttons (top right) that have blue magnifying glass icons under them. These buttons can be used to Digitally "zoom in" when reviewing images or using Live View.
Note that when taking photos the zoom function does not affect the end result (only the zoom on the lens itself can do that), so it is most commonly used as a way to check focus.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching and supporting my channel.
That's cool.
Thanks Candice 👍
Is there a way to increase the size of the focus DOT in the view finder I was at a wedding this weekend with extremely hot and bright sunshine and I often could not see the DOT…. Is there a way to enlarge it? I had turned off the beep because of the wedding…. always informative videos, thank you
Great video just learned about digital zoom great tip as always
I learn something new thanks
Appreciate the feedback Lee, thank you.
Could please post a video about focus on videos?
hi i am just learning M F with the af off i have set my camera to sp 1/160 f/6.3 iso 200 i have been focusing and turning my focus ring till it bleeped and then took the shot is this right or do i need to do it a different way thanks bill
Hi! So I'm right in thinking that AF lenses can do both? But, generally, if I see 'manual focus' lens this means it is MF only? Thanks :)
Paul - your instructional videos are incredibly helpful! ❤️ I would not mind seeing a button here for contribution to your channel…..... ! Thank you,
Thank you so much. The best way to support my channel is to watch the videos, like and SHARE (that really helps!!)
Thank you @StyleViewOrg
Paul.
I did thar already - Posted it on my class at Harvard University for Digital media production. Class is very intense and he expects you to know what you're teaching and I didn't… But now I do and I got my projects rated A - the final documentary.thanks to your clear and brief instructions....😀😊. I will happily post it on my Facebook as well, 🙏Tsvetana!
Random question but on the Nikon 3500 when u use BB focus do u have to hold the button down while u hit the shutter at the same time ? Thx
Yes, hold rear button to set focus (same as would by normally holding the shutter down halfway), then press the shutter to take an image.
Thank you for your very useful videos! my question is why when we are in auto focus on our nikon camera we still have the ability to adjust the focus ring? It seems to me that i manually focus but my settings are in auto!
Some sense will allow you to use auto focus but over ride this by manually turning and adjusting the focus ring on the lens.
@@photogenius thank you very much
I want to make sure all subjects in focus let's say 5 kids in room 4*4 playing , the autofocus of ax100e is sometimes blurring in during the video two three times. So what is best AF for such situation going manual if it is then should I focus farthest subject to cam in the room or closed it one
Thank u geeza.. im a proper badman
Hey, what setting is it on when you use manual focus?
Upali great video
Thank you very much.
Hello sir this is me again with a problem if you can solve it. I have temron 70-300 and a Nikon d90 body. Some times this lance works very best in auto focus subjects but some time feels very diffecult to auto focus on a subject. But manual focus is very good in it. Told me or advice me what to do because its a gift from a friend
With a Canon lens, is it normal when in manual focus mode that the focus ring will continuously turn in either direction and not stop?
I get an impression that manual focus is way to go with kit kenses since they do give you decent quality photos or if you're pro on other high quality lenses depending on what you need. Auto focus is way to go with high quality lenses and thos can if i'm not mistaken improve image quality even on entrly level dslrs like cannon eos 2000d.
Nice video
Thank you very much.
Make a video on : how to clean DSLR camera sensor
Not something I would want to do myself, you can buy kits to clean the sensor, but I'd rather leave this to someone else.
Hi there liking your Chanel! Just a quick question going to buy soon a videocamera with external microphone to use it mainly for blogs and interviews, so my question is the camera im looking at online doesn't have a manual focus and it says keep a shooting distance above 1,5m, doesn't it mean I can't do any close interview? Thanks I'm a total beginner!
What camera are you looking at getting?
@@photogenius any tips would be helpful but consider im gonna be interwiewing people so i dont know if this one woul be ok, i dont even know what memory card shall i insert thanks anyway!
Just found out what manual focus was after about a month of shooting!
What do I do my rebel t7 focus button won’t focus on anything and I’ve already tried resetting my settings for recording
Excellent tips again!!Thank you.I have one confusion,in this video you have said that for macro photos for example of flowers or bees we need to go front and back to get the flowers in focus manually. What happens when the plane of focus changes??Pls clear my confusion. Thanks again for all the helpful tips again!!
I will be posting a video in the near future about Focal Plane'. The focal plane is adjusted and defined predominantly by where you focus, it will not change unless you adjust the focus or the focal length of the lens.
Hello Paul, I just started using a EOS2000D. I tried adding on a wide angle lense, took a few pics.. .then took the add on lens off & now my camera wont focus. I tried watching like 6 of your videos & this particular issue is not addressed. Can you pls offer some suggestions? I don't know what to try. Thank you in advance
Can you tell us how to take perfect angle to take photo
The perfect angle would depend on the subject and what type of look or feel you are trying to convey with your image. This video might help : ua-cam.com/video/Syvo9ZjmcHA/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching.
First comment 😬😌✌️✌️
🏆
I used manual focus with my 50mm lens which I found slower but much smoother process...
It's always a good idea to be confident with Manual focus, thanks for the feedback Robert.
Hello sir, is there an instance where a digital camera does not have AF but only MF?
Yes. Some lenses do not offer auto focus. This is kinda rare these days but I bought a telephoto lens and to save money on it, since it's not a lens type I use much, I got one with manual focus only and it was much cheaper.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism Thanks, so does a camera body have an inbuilt autofocus or it only deals with lens
@@PrinceAtsu In this particular case, with this particular lens at least, yes. If you had a camera with a built in motor to focus, this lens would then have auto focus. Since my crop sensor camera doesn't, this means manual focus only.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism Thank you very much
I think Q*bert beat me to it and answered your questions 😀
Is there MF on Canon SX60-HS?
Yes there is, you will find a button on the rear marked MF (also a flower symbol for macro photography), using this button you can select manual focus.
Second comment😁😀👍👌🖐✋👋👐
😀
What about self portrait? If there isn’t sufficient light , I have to use Manual setting. Especially, when the sunlight was gone. The soft box wasn’t light. Took me a 30 mins to figure out the button is in the lens . 😂
A few years ago I bought a Tamron 150-600mm G2 which came with a x1.4 extender. Except neither my 80D nor my 6D Mk2 actually focus when the Extender is on...
And Tamron charges... £445 / $570 for the privilege!!!...
No idea what the benefits of that extender are, but for wildlife / bird photography it's absolutely useless.
Am I missing something obvious?
Cheers!
What if you've got two subjects?
Wow,have always being struggling,i never knew av always being using manual focus all my life😂😂😂😂😂
Would you use manual focus for astrophotography?
I would - and using the digital zoom feature in Live View is a big help.
Thanks for watching.
Focusing live view is at 5 minutes
Hìiiiiiiiiiiii
