I have the Hustler mast, 40, 20, 15 and 10 elements. Back in the 80’s & 90’s, the mast mount was mounted on the back of a station wagon hatch door. The mast was supported by a T shaped and 4 foot horizontal PVC pipe, attached to the luggage rack. (The T slipped down over the mast.) That prevented too much wind pull on the stick and element. This worked into Europe from GA. Great product.

Kevin, an excellent overview of the Hustlers and QD2 especially for new hams. And your comments about flexibility are right on; I am changing the mounting I am doing right now. One extremely valuable aspect of your videos is your voice over explanations while pausing for a good video look. I love to screenshot great ideas, saving them with your credits of course. vy 73 Peter PS I have an old Webster Bandspanner to try out too as well as hamsticks. Good fun.

My daily antenna is a Little Tarheel 2. Saying that, I have my fold over and all my Hustler resonators in a go “bucket”. Where the Tarheel is kind of finicky, the Hustler has •never• let me down.

The Hustler system is rock solid. It's been around forever and has really stood the test of time. I picked up a mast and set of resonators from an SK estate last winter. I've put it on the air a couple of times, but need a more robust system for mounting it to the Outback for mobile operation.

Finding deals on antennas is what can keep the excited ham hobbyist in operation. I should make a video of my Hustler portable when we drive out to Reno trips. paracord and 3 bands is a thing of beauty while thanking My XYL for tolerating it all. "Lions and tigers OH MY"

I’m on my fifth Jeep… but this last one has no installed radio… I own an iCom IC-7000, and an AH4. The plan was to mount my IC-7000 to my shotgun station suspended just above the front passenger seat. It hangs off the headrest and grab bar. The ATU will hang off the spare in the back… a drive-on stand will support the 12m Spiderbeam mast and a 40m doublet staked out asmuth in the direction of whoever I’m aiming at. The DC comes direct from the battery with a 15 amp fuse, well grounded to the chassis via a seat bolt.
Now I need to get out and operate. Loved the video, and the Hustler antenna system…

Interesting setup you are describing. I will say that once you get out and test your configuration, You will learn a number of different ways to make your setup work the best for the way you like to operate. Thanks for sharing.

Looks good, ran a similar setup on my Tracker , welded a piece of pipe to a lug nut, and ran 3/8" mount off that. U can also use a 33' wire for NVIS on 40m. Great Stuff

I was half under the impression that the internet had pretty much killed most of the operators LOL. Most of the 2m/70cm repeaters around me have closed shop and my HF rig has been in storage long enough it's probably a dust ball. Once I get a more permanent residence I may have to get back on the airwaves knowing their not dead. KC0WLF 73's...

I was given a double handfull of older, Hustler brand, verticle antennas and parts, by an elder uncle. He didn't remember what went with what. So, I am having to try and figure out how those damn pieces all fit together. Then determine what band, each length is for. I may just call Hustler (if they are still in business?) And see if they have a cross reference chart!?
    Your video was helpfull. Thanks!

  • @christopherwilliams9936

That's a great video. I like the way you've configured your installation. My Jeep Wrangler has five mounts on it currently. I've standardized on NMO mounts. TWO on the rear gate and three on the hood. Four of them have NMO based antennas and one has an NMO-to-3/8-24 adapter on it for my HF antennas. I also prefer the HUSTLER resonators for HF operations. I found a pipe based mount which attaches to existing dashboard bolts, on which I have mounted the control heads for my Yaesu FT-8900 and FT-857D as well as mounting my Alinco DR-235 / 222 MHz rig. As I live in a mountain valley and can't get a good path way out of there on VHF/UHF I have chosen to make my Jeep my primary Ham Shack. 73 de Chris W6NOB

I need to sit down with pen/pencil and paper and re-watch this. I was making breakfast as it played. This sounds rational and interesting. I wonder how much $$ to set aside to get the basic materials for an old 4x4 or my G90 chevy van ...

Kinda like your set up their
But your tire wraps or fail any tire wrap used outdoors or even under the hood or under a vehicle should always be a black cable tie, White will fail from UV even under a hood so get some black cable ties

    • @WilliamParmley

I've used Hustlers for 40 years! I have three masts, the MO-1, MO-2, and MO-4. I love the MO-4 and can't see much performance difference over the two longer masts. I use Firestick quick disconnects now because I no longer drive with mine and only use it parked, and they are cheaper. My setup is functionality similar to yours, using a heavy duty bicycle rack where you use a tire carrier. (I need to check my ground continuity!) Just yesterday I was thinking about adding on a counterpoise. I have a counterpoise wire with in-line connectors to adjust the length for all bands 40 through 10.

    • @hamradiowithkevin
      @hamradiowithkevin  2 роки тому +2

@@WilliamParmley , great idea on the multi band counterpoise I may need to try that. Your setup sounds spot on. I suspect your vertical setup works really good as well.

@@hamradiowithkevin A few weeks ago I went out with my KX2 to do a POTA activation with the Hustler, intending to get on 20 and maybe 17. The higher bands were "stinko" that day so I dropped down to 40. I didn't have high expectations since I was using the MO-4, which is 22 inches long. No problem though and made lots of CW contacts. I've always been impressed with the performance of the Hustler system.

A simple answer to why you have this setup the way it is would be its VIRTUALLY impossible to operate whilst driving, say nothing of how DUMB it would be to try to change frequencies and tune an antenna to that frequency whilst also driving a vehicle. ONLY the idiots that drive and use their mobile phones at the same time would ask this question, someone that has a brain already knows the answer. Ham radio is NOTHING like the single channel user's on most CB radio''s....ham's don't just sit on channel 19 and talk shit......
I think your setup is brilliant myself, and if you've been using it for the past 8 years or more, then it must work OK aswell.
