Today, I'm testing out the Chameleon Antenna PRV, a versatile Portable Resonant Vertical antenna, perfect for both casual and serious portable operators. I'll guide you through two unique setups: one designed for a quick and easy road-side installation and another for a more robust campground setup.
I’m here at the scenic Mirror Lake Highway, battling a bit of wind but surrounded by incredible mountain views. As I set up, I’ll share my approach to dealing with limited space, pesky noise interference, and keeping my setup out of the way of curious onlookers. Whether you’re on the side of a busy road or a crowded lakefront, I'll show you practical tips for getting your PRV on the air with minimal hassle.
We’ll dive into the components that make this antenna kit a game changer, from the stainless steel whip to the Multi-Configuration Coil that makes tuning a breeze. Plus, I'll explain how I position my elevated radials and why this setup performs so well. This isn't just a tutorial; it's about the fun and challenges of operating outdoors, including insights on how I manage with different radios and power sources.
By the end of this video, you’ll know exactly what it’s like to set up and operate the PRV in real-world conditions. I used a dog training dummy launcher, tied the arborist line (looks like your pull line) around the dummy and fired it over the tree. The dummy launchers use .22 blanks of the same sort that are used for the powder powered tools, a box of 50 is a few bucks. Dummy launchers are not considered firearms in the US, the devices and blanks can both be mail ordered. But it saved a step.

The “little details” explaining why you do certain things are invaluable. Like leaving things a little loose, but not too loose, so as not to fight mother nature in a temporary setup. Things you’ve learned from trial and error. Thanks for the very interesting and informative video!

You can use the SOTA app on a cell phone, running the POTA portion of the app, and FT8 to to spot yourself, even though you have no cell phone connectivity. You enter your park number, your call sign, and the operating frequency into the POTA side of the app on the phone. The phone will play out tones (FT8) reflecting call sign, park, frequency, etc. on its speaker, and use the radio mic to xmit the tones on the appropriate HF data frequency (i.e., 14.074 for 20M). The FT8 signal will be picked up, and the online (Internet) POTA app will spot you. There are a few videos on UA-cam that show how this works.
GREAT VIDEO TNX 73 DE K9IOU K
Loved the video and was just what I was looking for to use to activate a POTA site. Curious, what feed line did you use for the LEFS 8010?
I used RG8x 50 feet. Have fun out there !
This must be K7SW day! Thanks for the test.
Awesome. Brilliant idea! Thank you. I'm about to build something like this too. I see this is tuned for 2m but have you tried it as a 137.xx for NOAA sat or ISS SSTV reception? I'm assuming it should pull this duty just fine, but was looking for your thoughts. Also as an option, I'm going to use insulation supports. You can get it at Lowes. I recently insulated the ceiling of my tool shed and have a bunch left over. They are less than $20 for 100 carbon steel 12 ga rods. They are 24" long but fastening both the director and reflector like you did on your reflector, should be a good option. They are very rigid, but can flex just a bit and real hard to put a bend in them. Also thinking about a 70cm version.
all the examples you reference should work fine ! Good luck on the project.
Use the 23m antenna wit a 9:1 UNUN by VK6YSF from Australia. Low swr over the entire 3 to 30 MHz segment!!!!!!!

73 ( UR6EF )
Can you make a video! I have a suggestion this antenna vs long speaker wire around a broom or stick with cheap Matchbox? Who would win?
That camper is sick bro!
When is Quartsfest ?
I have grest success with an NVIS configuration on a 40m dipole, 4 feet off the ground, 10 watts SSB, 5 watts digital. 73.
I'm calling from the future. I built one out of 3/4inch rigid copper 2.6 feet diameter with a 250pf capacitor out of an old full power tuner. It tunes from 40-15 meters. I'm just wondering what the dimension of the aluminum loop is. I'm going to build another one using the other cap out of that old tuner adding doorknobs to lower or raise the bands. I enjoyed the video and realize it's 2 years old, you made it interesting. 73's🎙KD9OAM🎧
👀 . . . 💯👍
Why was the tree on fire
awesome!
Glad you liked it!
The curve would be risky. I enjoyed your post.
Looks good. I looked up the antenna and see it's $600 + or -. Wow. Looking for alternatives to lower my monetary output. Thanks
One more thing - I printed a ‘top’ for my fishing pole masts. A cylinder with the lower part diameter slightly less than the top inner diameter of the top section of the mast. The upper part of the cylinder have a diameter about 2 mm more - to prevent the cylinder falling down the mast. On the top of the cylinder I rounded the edges - like a pistol bullet - and cut a 2mm slot down for an antenna wire. Finally I hot glued the cylinder to the top mast section. Now I can grab the tube to raise the mast, run my EFHW wire through the slot and raise the mast. A horizontal hole through the cylinder near the top allows you to insert a safety ‘pin’ to secure the wire - kind of like a fire extinguisher safety pin..
Excellent design,
You have a good “fan” reflector behind antenna 😂 - Those powerlines likely affect horizontal antennas more than vertical, but would be interesting to do a wspr test. You live in a beautiful place
Great video but why would anybody ever move into a house controlled by an HOA ????????????? MOVE. N2SN in rural NE Florida.
Agreed, I don't live in an HOA, many do get stuck for all kinds of life reasons. Being able to choose is a gift.
Hi Kevin, I was excited to see another one of video adventures. The Mirror Lake area is one of our favorite places to camp. We were at Washington Lake just a few months ago and loved it. Thanks for your product reviews. Having a portable vertical that doesn’t require a large footprint should be in everyone’s go kit. I use the Super Antenna MP1 which is similar to the Chameleon. Both are great antennas. Thanks again for your video. 73 W1UTE
It is sad for me to see summer go. That is one of the most beautiful places on earth up there. I see that i don't need to tell you that. Thanks for checking in. 73 Kevin
The elevation extension rods appear to provide an RF pathway to ground. To reduce ground loss (the primary objective of an elevated radial or counterpoise system), it seems to me that the elevated PRV should be fully isolated/insulated from ground. With both the antenna and counterpoise isolated from ground, only one or two tuned radials would be required. With the PRV connected to a good conductive ground, via the extension rods, the elevated radials function more like a capacitive loading element than a true counterpoise. When the soil/ground is a poor conductor (which appears to be your case), then the PRV's connection to ground will be highly resistive (semi-isolated) and the radials will carry more RF current than the extension rod; i.e., function more like a true counterpoise than a capacitive loading element. Whatever the case, to optimize performance both the antenna (PRV) and its elevated radials should be *fully* isolated from ground. [Edited afterthought: mount the PRV and its radial puck on the ground rod, attach the extension rods and whip to top of PRV, lay the untuned radials on the ground. Much easier to deploy than elevated radials.]
Kevin that's a nice looking antenna and look well made 73 buddy!
Thanks Chuck 73 !
Would a portable antenna like the PRV help your activations?
Outstanding, thanks.
Glad you liked it.
Very good way to 'real' tune an end fed going remote tuner, I use one like this at home. Thanks for the great demonstration, best 73 GM0KET 😎 👍
Great video and very well explained.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks for the video review, 73! de Mekhman. 4K6MAR
Great setup. Where can I find extra connectors for the resonators? You only have the full quick connect pair listed but I only need one mount for multiple resonators.
not exactly sure what you are asking about. try amazon, look for hustler antenna mounts. You will see the most mounts or rods that the antennas screw on to. Is that what you are looking for? 73
@@hamradiowithkevin I think I misunderstood the setup. You need one quick disconnect for the mast. All of the resonators simply screw on the top of the mast. I thought each resonator needed its own quick connector.
Do you have to manually tune it when changing bands? That's a bit pointless for me, just saying.
Best DX at beach with doublet held up with palms. Aloha.
I’m in the middle of doing a 160m loop. For right now I am going to test in a wide open field, so it should go up easy.
Very cool
@@hamradiowithkevin I’ll let you know in a couple days how it worked out
It has excellent reception. Noise floor is a 1. I have been getting solid 59 reports. Compared to my efhw, the noise floor is 5-7 and signal reports of 55-57. I’m really happy with the results.
with a nice setup like that, it is hard to go with anything less, nice work
@@hamradiowithkevin thank you! I tried to post a pic on QRZ but how do you get the whole thing in frame. Hehehehe. KD9ZSP
Thanks!
Welcome!
Hi everyone! Great video K7SW ham radio! I loved that New Zealand contact you made and for over 7 minutes! I'm trying to get enough chutzpah up to build myself some kind of easy multi-band antenna to use with either my HACKRF ONE (This thing utilizes 0.50 MHz to 6000 MHz or 6 GHz, WOW!) in a PORTAPACK H2N+ with MAYHEM 2.0.2 software (latest as of 10-07-2024 at 3:26AM Pacific Daylight Time) or with any of my BAOFENG PORTABLE HANDHELD radios, I've got two BAOFENG models, a BaoFeng BF-F8HP which kind of oddly they arrived adorned with BAOFENG UV-860 stickers on it, not the BF-F8HP model number someone on reddit told me to download drivers and software for it under that model number instead (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio (136-174MHz VHF & 400-520MHz UHF) and I used to have two of these but threw the other one at a clearly inebriated driver who failed to stop for some kids at a crosswalk and nailed the rear of his pickup truck's box edge and I guess the radio got tired with the truck so on it went, kind of ironically, into a "Neighbourhood Watch/Crimestoppers" metal sign which read in part, "Did you see a crime? Be a good neighbour to help make our community a safer place to call home! Report crimes against property, theft, grand theft, shoplifting, courier service drop thefts..... Call 1-800-XXX-XXXX" yadda yadda. And lastly, I just received 2 new BAOFENG UV-5R HANDHELDs and I "FACTORY" hacked them already (came w/4 batteries total, 2 big long ones and 2 short regular ones) & these BAOFENGS were indeed AUTHENTIC, unlike the UV-860/BF-F8HP "Drunk Driver Annoyances" because it seemed that was all they ever did, other than made really crappy, but useful all the same, flashlights. So thats what I have to work with, also several metal tape measures, 10 feet of recently purchased white 3/4 PVC pipe along with two end caps and I already have PVC pipe glue, a box of eyelet wire end thingies, a roll with 25 feet of 16 gauge multi strand copper wire in one sheath not two like speaker wire, a soldering iron and assorted crucial addons and accessory products. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do with the items at hand so I can possibly do some DXing I'd love to hear about it! Thanks sooooo much! Daniel.
Great Video, can you tell me where you got your 43 foot painters pole???
It's a window washer pole that I purchased used from a local window washer company
What loop are you using
Floop 3.0 from chameleon
Sure wish you could have used the mfj 2275 buddy pole using the 75meter ham sticks.
Excellent video! Excellent!
Thank you very much!
How well do the bullet connectors hold-up over time? It seems that repeatedly connecting and disconnecting may cause problems, especially out in the field. Any corrosion issues with the connectors?
like with anything i suppose that is true, for me i have not experienced any issues yet. I don't use that antenna everyday, or i should say i don't activate the radio everyday. Your point is valid though. Great question
Amazon sells gold plated bullet connectors 6 pairs for 8$ I'd cover with shrink wrap if left up permanently. That should take care of any issues.
Nice video. BTW, there are 3 different sizes of hitch receivers.
Kevin: When you use the 25 foot mast for a vertical on top--which components are you using for that vertical? Thanks. Russ
This guy is an icon in the gay ham world. Not many gay men are as active in both the ham world and freaking.
