Might I suggest a telescoping fishing pole (crappie pole). Those things are taller than the telescoping whip and much, much lighter. That lets you reduce overall weight significantly. Run a wire up the pole and you have a vertical. Run a end fed half wave dipole up and you have a multiband vertical without need for radials. Run that same EFHW wire with the cable center raised on the pole and you’ve an inverted V. That wire itself is the guy. It also lets you run much longer wires. etc. etc.
My 20 Meter Vertical is ground mounted with 3 radials about 13 feet long on top of the grass. The vertical element is an aluminum extension ladder leaned against the roof.. I use it on 30 Meters by extending the ladder.

I ran into another POTA Ham Operator that use this configuration except used two longer radials 90 degrees apart. He was loud and clear. He called his configuration the Predator Antenna I believe. Wow it would be an honor to QSO with Jim W6LG. I watch his videos all the time. I have all the items to make this but I was thinking of using a steal t-post I could drive in the ground. I would image I should insulate the mount from the t-post though as you do not have a direct connection to ground.
Yes a nice setup like his would be directional and work perfectly. Jim is a real fun person indeed. Try your stake idea. You might be surprised at how well it will work . 73
I got two for the Tactical Delta Loop/MPAS and then wanted to experiment with phased ground mounted verticals. Now I can do lots of fun experiments at full size for 20m. Thanks for all the good ideas. Can’t wait for the video on that mount.
Currently putting together this scenario and the Dipole setup. I ordered all the related adapters and have already have several tripod scenarios and clamps. I should get an antenna switcher !! Nice 1/4 wave vertical. My only suggestion is instead of soldering the connectors for your radials, use liquid electrical tape. I found with soldering, the joint becomes hard and unpliable and eventually the wire breaks right at the solder point, especially with constantly undoing and redoing the radials. Crimp them, then brush on the electrical seal. The wires will stay nice and flexable and will take at least four times as long before it breaks. It can be very frustrating to setup your antenna, setup your rig and everything, then find your radial connections are broken. And it WILL be on a day when you don't have access to a soldering iron to be able to fix it. Ask me how I know.......73 de VK2AAO
Great video. I am a new ham that is investigating the purchase of my first HF rig. I am really leaning towards the Yaesu FT891. I really want to experiment with digital (FT8), so this may not be the best option, but it is still an option with the addition of something like a digi-rig. To start with before I mount an antenna permanently on a tower, I want to get something like an EFHW to string in the trees outside my shack, but I am also really leaning towards a vertical on a tripod like you show here. If you have ever been fishing, you will know that you need more than one hook size in your tackle box to catch different fish. I think Ham radio is similar in that regard. I like my FT-891 and use it for both a secondary base rig and for backyard portable with EFHW antennas. I have a 40 meter MFJ Hamstick permanently installed on the back deck as a backup for the fan dipole. The 891 can be used for digital modes with a SignaLink interface. An external tuner is needed for some antennas.
I do something similar and use a Hustler Mobile antenna Quick Disconnect QD-2 so I don’t have to worry about the threads. It fits the 3/8-24 standard threads.

Those 3 or 4 rods sticking out horizontally or angled downward from the bottom of pole or tower mounted vertical antennas are radials. They establish the ground plane. Same thing.
@@anonymous_friend If the antenna is elevated, the radials need to be elevated (or at least part of them). The ground plane must be connected at the base of the vertical antenna. The better the ground plane is, the better the antenna will perform in general. Asking if there is an improvement when you change anything on an antenna depends on what you're looking for. More low angle radiation? High angle? Better feed matching impedance and lower SWR? More efficiency? Directionality? Gain? Front-to-back ratio?

Hi Kevin…My name is Jim and I contacted you about a year ago. I have Parkinson’s Disease so I need to keep things very simple. For that reason I decided NOT to put a shack in my home so I used my FT-710 all last summer “backyard portable” as you suggested to me at the time. My single whip antenna worked fine on 20m but due to geography I have not been able to get farther than mid-continent from Oregon. I would like to try putting together an antenna for my truck that I can take up the hill in my rural neighborhood and make some longer distance contacts. Just a quick note, he is using quarter wave radials on the video, and they are elevated. If your radials are actually on the ground, they are not as critical in regards to length. This antenna is basically the same thing as a traditional ground plane antenna which was used widely in cb and commercial radio for years. It's a good antenna.

You are welcome. You can certainly use a choke, I normally don't use one for a quick setup like in this video. To me, it never makes enough difference to bother.

Because we rent our home, I can't really build anything permanent. They are elevated radials so I don't want them ground to the earth. If so, they would de tune. You should try it to see the result, will still work, just a good thing to know. 👍
Thank you, yes there are two ways to use a vertical. Ground mounted and elevated radials. Elevated radios must be measured and trimmed to exactly the band you want. where ground radials do not need to be exact. For a more precise having the radials raised radial provides less ground loss for one. I suppose many operators do not want to take the time to and space to extend the radials, I am not really sure. I will operate both types because you never know what conditions you will be in when you setup your radio. I think you should try both setups, It will give you more experience with setup and learning your antenna.
For this antenna 1/4 wave makes the antenna easy to use and no Tuner. Lobger radials can be used, you will need a tuner to bring the match into range for you Jeremy. 73 Kevin

Yes, that is good quality blue painters tape so that it does not leave residue on the radio but it also protects the radio and does not make the radio more bulky.
So, if you were to shorten your whip to operate on 10 meters, would you shorten your radials as well or leave them at 16.5 ft? Got my Chameleon 17' in the mail today btw. Pretty jazzed to see how it performs from Alaska. I learn something or get an idea every time I watch one of your videos. Thx.
I appreciate that, yes you could just fold the radials back on themselves for ten meters, and you would be all set. Put some tape as marker on the folks over point to be able to repeat the process faster reach time. 👍

4 radials are practical and effective. It will be hard to measure in a practical use case, any additional radial wire. To me, that is enough reason to stick with four. Hope that helps

Good video. BUT 16ft 6in is not 10.06 meters. it is 5.08 meters. How wide is the bandwidth? No tuner/transformer, I presume. I have been experimenting with "ham sticks" for 20 and 40 meters. I tuned the ham stick using a mag mount on my car for 14.175MHz. I then mounted it on my motor scooter using a mirror mount and alternatively one of these jaw clamps. Actually, I did not have much success with radials. BUT I did run a raised counterpoise/radial(?) 14ft (Ventenna recommendation)l ong and viola! Very broad bandwidth. I then mounted the ham stick on a strong tripod. I got mine for free from the dumpster. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Same setup with one 14ft wire. No tuner no transformer. The 40m ham stick was a little more tricky. The bandwidth is narrow, only about 80KHz. But it works. Let me know what you think. Many roads lead to the same destination. Vy 73! SV0SGS
Good question Tony, if you elevate the radials, you need less, like 3 or 4. if you ground mount the vertical you need MANY, like 50. and the match can be tuned by changing the angle of the radials. I hope you get to try this one time . It is way worth the effort

I appreciate that, yes you could just fold the radials back on themselves for ten meters, and you would be all set. Put some tape as marker on the folks over point to be able to repeat the process faster reach time. 👍
1/4-20 can't handle a 17ft whip if it is windy - ask me how I know.

The SWR will be pretty flat, which is a great thing

Would six radials be better than four? At what point is there no advantage to adding more?
4 radials are practical and effective. It will be hard to measure in a practical use case, any additional radial wire. To me, that is enough reason to stick with four.

I would have been transmitting with 50 watts using that battery.
Good video. BUT 16ft 6in is not 10.06 meters. it is 5.08 meters. How wide is the bandwidth? No tuner/transformer, I presume. I have been experimenting with "ham sticks" for 20 and 40 meters. I tuned the ham stick using a mag mount on my car for 14.175MHz. I then mounted it on my motor scooter using a mirror mount and alternatively one of these jaw clamps. Actually, I did not have much success with radials. BUT I did run a raised counterpoise/radial(?) 14ft (Ventenna recommendation)l ong and viola! Very broad bandwidth. I then mounted the ham stick on a strong tripod. I got mine for free from the dumpster. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Same setup with one 14ft wire. No tuner no transformer. The 40m ham stick was a little more tricky. The bandwidth is narrow, only about 80KHz. But it works. Let me know what you think. Many roads lead to the same destination. Vy 73! SV0SGS

Good question Tony, if you elevate the radials, you need less, like 3 or 4. if you ground mount the vertical you need MANY, like 50. and the match can be tuned by changing the angle of the radials. I hope you get to try this one time . It is way worth the effort
