It baffles me that they chose to bring in Druckman to work on the show instead of Straley. Keep in mind, Druckman’s original story pitch was a revenge story but Straley tossed it out and it was Straley who created the father-daughter relationship with Joel and Ellie

Notice uncharted 4, lost legacy and last of us part 2 with Cuckmann in charge are the only games with stupid woke propaganda in it? Biggest Problem: In the Last Of Us game Joel went through absolute "HELL" from the player's point of view to save Ellie in the end. It was by far the hardest part of the game because the humans were heavily armed.
The last sequence deserved an episode of it's own episode as a final battle showdown. In the show Joel totally tears through all of the Fireflies with absolutely no resistance. It fails to capture how hard that part of the game was and how hard it is for one man to wipe out that many other men.
Maybe I should make a video on this...
I feel like what they were trying to go for with that whole scene at the Firefly Hospital was proving how formidable Joel still was despite how frail he’d frequently appeared throughout the show. Whilst game Joel was always aggressive and a force to be reckoned with, show Joel was consistently more vulnerable and appeared more weak throughout. I’m guessing the way that he easily pushed through the Fireflies was meant to be some big reveal about how “badass” Joel can actually be. Whether or not it worked would probably depend on how someone feels about Pedro’s performance as Joel in comparison to Troy’s.

My game crashed and I lost all the weapons and items, thank god the chapter was unlocked. I had to do the last level with no weapons.
I had no internet back then so i couldn't download the patch.

Yes, but it also shows that 2013 was a different time from 2023. The tension and horror of the gameplay was unique to the game, but the emotional impact of the story didn't need to be. They chose that.
The saddest part of this whole season was the fact that the story felt extremely rushed despite having 2 out of 9 episodes being filler material.

But they rushed through the best parts, had absolutely NO CLICKERS nor good fights, when you finally see Ellie in the game really showing her bad ass skills they also skipped through all of that…
Because they were never interested in telling a story. They were only ever interested in pushing progressive agendas. The whole show is just a platform for that, not a story.

dont get why people have a problem with the idea of Joel "dooming humanity" cuz thats why i like him so much. The idea that he is willing to throw away any chance of a cure and future for humanity because he cant stomach the idea of losing another daughter is so compelling to me. its such a selfish yet understandable act and i think the alternative that the cure probably wont work so joel is just doing the logical thing is so boring in comparison because the logical will always be less interesting than the illogical.
If the one single group that can create a vaccine is willing to sacrifice a child on the basis of a theory that their plan **might** be borderline effective at providing immunity... Then there isn't any humanity left to save, at least not in that portion of humans. The first game showed Joel struggling with his decision. Which, ironically enough, what he decided to do can be argued to be one of the greatest displays of humanity. Saving that little girl who started out as "just cargo".

I was disappointed how they didnt show the gym fight with Bloater. It was one of the scariest thing where many players (myself included) died and they could have easily make heavy action pack episode out of where Joel would fight with Bloater. Instead we got Brokeback mountain: Old man edition.
Sadly we got writers with donkey brains incapable of providing that awesome scenario. Super bummed about it too bc I was thinking it’d be the one redeeming thing from the show. What a waste

Neil Druckmann said that the cure was guaranteed in the original game, but that always came off to me like a detail he retroactively pulled out of his ass.
there's lore you can grab in the Uni that actually disproves that. They're science logs that suggest a cure ended in failure.

Something I noticed in the side-by-side of Joel telling Ellie she's going with Tommy. In the game, Joel reacts as an emotional man of his character would: he yells. Show Joel doesn't yell and barely raises his voice. I'm wondering if the showrunners were concerned that a yelling man was too 'upsetting' for modern audiences.
What wrong with being scared and traumatised? Men can be emotional to not everyone is a right winger who closes off all emotions

Psychologically, that has a tremendous effect on someone's personality. Kill thirty and it becomes routine. Watch one person die and it's traumatizing, but after a hundred you get used to it. The minds ability to adapt is horrifying, and after twenty years, Joel's personality warps and changes to fit his environment. That's a well understood concept of human psychology, noted heavily by veterans of extensive combat. You can see it in their memoirs and interviews. It usually isn't until they return from combat and enter the 'normal world' that this attitude shifts, which usually results in severe PTSD. In a world like the Last of Us, the 'normal world' doesn't exist anymore.
given that, I think it's unrealistic that Joel is as emotional as he's depicted in the show. The game has a more realistic depiction of what extensive male trauma looks like.

The biggest problem in this show besides the changes to the storyline is Joel and Ellie themselves, compared to the versions from the game they don’t come across as forming a surrogate relationship at all while Joel himself is way too soft for a man surviving the apocalypse.
Modern Hollywood won’t ever show a man being strong and competent. They have to prop up Ellie becoming a “strong independent” woman. Also the bond between them has to come across as weak as possible so that nobody cares when they kill him off next season. Modern Hollywood is too predictable

I played the game from ps3-5 and the story still gets me. Joel is sopposed to be a hard ass that fights for survival and Ellie is the one that goes from being a girl to a proficient confident fighter only from experiences shared between the two. But we don't get that from the show. The show just feels wooden and we never really get any reason that the two should care for each other
It's almost like gameplay encounters and length of a game helped form that connection...

Bella Ramsey is hard to look at so her being "cutesy" doesn't work for me. And the Girl Boss shit with Joel acting like a sad fuck instead of channeling anger to survive doesn't do it for me.

Another thing about the last episode is that they made no mention of the text and audio files you can find in the game that mention they've tried the same surgery multiple times before and it always resulted in failure and death of the subject. I remember when the game came out there was a huge discussion surrounding that aspect and the show just drops it entirely just to make Joel look even more like a bad guy

Once I heard that season 1 only covers the first game and it’s only 9 episodes, I knew it was pointless. There simply isn’t enough time to cover the original game, never mind expanding on it which is the whole point of a series. Instead it’s only a cliff notes version which is pointless. You might as well just watch the cutscenes from the game on UA-cam.
The fact that two people can make a whole town safe and live for 20 years with almost no drama says it all about the world that has been made for tlou. Episode 3 showed a better life than alot live now and that's ridiculous. Don't tell me two people can co exist just the two of em and they dont get pussed off with each other also the infected should of been a major inclusion to the story .
Some argue that the first game was more character centric than zombie focused, but at least there _were_ action bits to keep you entertained.

Can't help but feel disappointed by this adaptation. I think Synth is right about saying this is definitely Neil's "remake" of The Last of Us. Subtle changes that normies wouldn't care to notice. The assassination of Joel's character is hard not to notice, however.

I didn't like the 2nd game's storyline but as a grown-ass adult with my emotions in check, I'm open-minded and willing to so how HBO makes everything click together. Emphasis on CLICK TOGETHER because the 1st season has to have a natural buildup to the 2nd season.

Episode 1 and 2 were decent. 5 and 8 were suburb. 9 is not bad. The rest are forgettable

Gameplay is 100% canon in the case of The Last of Us. Especially since the Part 1 remaster was able portray the state Joel is in at any given moment during cutscenes by having them run in real time instead of being prerecorded video files. Furthermore, the entire plot of Last of Us was ND's stab at addressing the ludo-narrative dissonance that plagued the Uncharted games for years by creating a plausible world scenario in which the appropriately written main character would have a narrative driven reason to kill the ever loving fuck out of dozens of people throughout a harsh journey.
This was part of the reason Part 2 got absolutely shit on. Druckman just completely fucking forgot that entire attempt to marry gameplay violence with story reasoning and made a retarded game where Ellie murders untold swarms of people in absolutely grotesque ways, only to decide REVENGE BAD at the last minute.
moral of part 2 story: if someone brutally murders your loved one right in front of you, just get over it loser.

David's men literally refer to him as a "crazy man" when they report back to David, which is a completely reasonable thing to think about a lone dude that fucking murders dozens of you almost single-handedly. Joel is not normal. Joel has an unnatural and pretty scary talent for violence. Ellie had been traveling with Joel for months by the point that players briefly control her and it's pretty safe to say that his uh... education, shall we call it? Would have rubbed off on her. She only kills like, a couple dozen dudes at most using primarily stealth, much like Joel does. A knife driving into your neck doesn't magically hurt less just because a kid is doing it. David dies because he's too full of himself to just kill Ellie and get it over with. The Last of Us is about as grounded as a game like it can be while still also basically being Gears of War. Any less combat and people would start to notice that you don't do much in the game.
Everything I have heard about TLOU2 is that the plot was sloppily written and executed.

Sometimes I think that Neil's initial goal with TLOU game was to have us the players hate Joel in the end & not relate to him. Like try to sympathize with the villain type ordeal but still know it's bad...In reality people didn't even view Joel as a villain because almost everyone would do or at least try to do what he did. Especially the people who played the game who at that point in the game when they are going to kill Ellie, people have basically become Joel with all the context.
His logic is that “killing a group of terrori…sorry, I mean FREEDOM FIGHTERS who tried to sacrifice my own daughter is bad”.
Alternative ending wouldve been joel pointing out all the flaws in marlenes theory about the vaccine and wouldve been labeled an antivaxxer and banned from twitter

Here's the other thing that Druckmann often misses when it comes to not seeing the forest for the trees in terms of his storytelling sometimes. The brilliant part about the Last of Us Part 1, wasn't JUST the very human connections and characterization, which, regardless of what you think of the story of Part 2, is STILL there in the same manner. But the brilliant part, was the meta narrative of Joel truly being able to actually mourn Sarah. The whole game, is an allegory for the 5 stages of grief. And the show, being so focused on making everyone feel like real people, misses out on that aspect. To its detriment. Even if the showrunners race swap, even if the acting quality isn't QUITE the same, even if there are a few miscasts, KEEPING that meta-narrative and focus could make it more forgivable. But it doesn't. This is what the people shouting "Well what even IS woke?" don't understand. It's not that anyone is super focused on race swaps, or LGBT aspects of a story. It's that THOSE parts become the focus, OVER the actual story.

Race swaps and the like weren't the focus. If you actually bothered to consume behind the scenes media before making this poor faith assumption you would know that the representation was always secondary to the story. Like Sam being deaf. That wasn't to just have a deaf person, it was to make Sam rely on Ellie even more, making here assume a more role of a protector, linking to the original themes of the last of us more heavily. The same reasoning can be applied to most other changes. The only exception being Sarah being black, but it doesn't matter cause Sarah's race is a really superficial element of the story.
My point is, the focus is still firmly on the themes of unconditional love and grief, it just also has more positive representation, and if you don't like that your either a bigot or just stupid.

8. Marlene knows exactly how Ellie is immune, making the cure certain instead of ambiguous, and making Joel more villainous for stopping it.
9. Joel executes Fireflies in the hospital without hesitation or remorse, the most violent he is in the whole show, the exact moment that we most question if his actions are right.
Was the game about homosexuality, racial diversity, feminism, communism, ineffective men, environmentalism, anti-religious sentiment and the treatment of disabled people? The ending of the game leaves it ambiguous whether Joel did the right thing. The ending of the show wants you to hate him.

I find the dissonance between the story and these political messages really amusing. While the story's theme makes you question what's right and wrong and forces you to make up your own mind about it, at the same time there's these clearly politicaly intentioned messages that are basically telling you what to think

I'm fairly certain in the remake, I'm pretty sure they also completely covered up the Salt Lake City Temple in scaffolding. The fact that they covered up such an iconic and integral part of the Salt Lake City skyline might just be a coincidence, as I do know the building was under construction a little while back, but it still feels pretty ingenuous, and given that the show already displayed that it had no qualms villifying religion, I wouldn't be surprised if they just wanted the building covered up.

Last of Us made believable characters with believable motives. The fidelity of the characters was way more than we see in most videogames, so it did feel weird to be killing so many people.
If you can't see the difference between Joel killing a bunch of people and the Doom Slayer killing demons (let me help you out there: Solid Snake killing 100s of guards is a better example), then you really are dumb.

Neither is better than the other. They are just different. Like books, video games lets you inside of the character's head. So the character's actions can be overlooked. Film and television can't do this. For example, in the Hunger Games books Katniss was far more ruthless. Because film loses the ability to get inside of the her head, there is no way they could have portrayed her this way. Same thing with Joel.

Every internet critic is worshipping this show as the 2nd coming. Shows how far all entertainment has fallen when this garbage, based on a great story in a video game, is looked at as good.
People are numb to the message now so who cares, as long as it is similar when they remake its all good to the masses.

I thought that was just a play on words "We live in a commune, so we're communists" because if I understood it correctly, the settlers own houses and stuff, which is not what communism stands for. You dont get to own anything in a communist society. But I could be wrong. I did not enjoy the show that much, except for the last episode

If you "own" your house but the "committee" decides who gets it, what you can do with it, how much food gets delivered to it, etc, then you don't REALLY own it, do you? But that's just a hypothetical; without really telling us more details, we don't know.
@BWMagus I agree. Not enough details. Regardless of whether the society was communist or not, I still think she was using communist as a play on the word "commune". It's just that it was an odd choice to include it in the script especially during this politically charged climate.
Joel supposed to be a resourceful and experienced man and yet he doesn’t what communism is. Tommy said that his community has democratically elected leader which means his community is democracy. Communism hates the concept of election and historically speaking, communist countries always imprison or murder people who want to have a free election.

In the game it's just a gay couple, that you meet and is in the game for not even 10 min. In the show it's a straight guy who saves a gay man, that 'falls in love' ' just let it happen' was the quote. This implies a straight man starved of female affection will change his sexuality for that affection. And that is how it implies that sexuality is changeable. And that is something that LGB community has fought against.

The show was just like the game. I don't see that much of a difference. Yeah they removed some action scenes but it would be a waste of time for a TV show. Maybe they should have included one more scene of Elie and Joel working together fight off the infected. I'm pretty satisfied with the adaptation and I didn't mind some of the changes they made with Bill's story. I actually think it's better than the one we got in the game.
This channel has all the makings to be big:
1. It's subversive to the current Western culture and paradigm.
2. The creator seems just misanthropic enough not to care about the backlash but just invested enough in the state of his culture and nation to put out the subversion in the first place.
3. He seems intelligent and able to pick up on these 'subtle' cues and pushes towards the end goal of the "ones in power".
4. He's got a good sense of humor, not too serious.
