  • Soundwave is one of the most iconic Decepticons and, aside from Megatron himself, is my personal favorite. Everything about this character is intriguing and, simply, cool. This is one of the most requested retrospectives I've had, so I hope you all enjoy it. Next time, we delve headfirst into our Halloween theme.
Apologies if my voice is a tad less clear this week. Allergies are the worst.

Apparently there was an alleged deleted scene in transformers the movie where Spundwave defeated all the decepticons and automatically ordered Astrotrain to go back to save Megatron before he was shot in the back by Starscream who was hiding the entire time during the fight

That would have been awesome. Shame that didn’t make it in.

I just knew that there was something autistic coded about soundwave that always resonated with me! His quiet, calculated, and monotone demeanor being a protective front for crippling empathy, and his rigid yet loyal devotion to Megatron because he's the only "connection" he has is both enlightening and depressing. As someone on the autism spectrum and bipolar spectrum, I often have to suppress or ignore my emotional turmoil to appease other individuals with the irrational anxiety that they'll either abandon me for failure regarding those efforts or abuse and ostracize me for simply existing. Perhaps Soundwave just wants to LIVE; maybe he does not desire holistic destruction of the Autobots, but rather a reality where he can pursue his intellectual prowess accordingly without significant deficits. Under a calm persona elevated by cold logic, he's surprisingly the most tortured member of the Decepticons adjacent to Starscream; his only "friend" is a tyrannical psychopath, and the only socialization he receives is with comrades in arms whom, by all accounts, don't understand or appreciate the totality and brilliance of his endeavors.
....Oh well, at least he has lazerbeak and dem.

Just hopping on to say that your content is PEAK! As someone with a Transformers fixation - specifically on the Decepticons out of a desire to understand them better - and is also very into psychology, your character analysis-adjacent videos are music to my ears and food for my soul; serious eye candy !
That bit at the end where you attempted to puzzle together Soundwave's backstory was _so interesting_ ... and really hit home, too. That topped with your note on how you related to IDW 'wave's sensitivity and his monotone voice due to you being autistic kind of promoted me to think about myself, as I too see myself in Soundwave because of these exact same things (never been diagnosed but the more I think about it, it may not be totally impossible... Also being someone who's regularly surrounded by and interacting with autistic people, I find it kinda funny how it pretty much took a fictional character for me to really be convinced XD)
Your Megatron and Psychology of Starscream videos are on my watchlist (and the Shockwave one; I'm *dying* to hear what you've got to say about him!!!!) Those videos being recommended to me is what got me to discover your content, but I haven't really finished them because of this video catching my attention; Soundwave is my beloved and you did a phenomenal job at digging into his psyche and shedding some light on and adding emphasis to some rather basic things about him ^^ spent about an hour taking notes, and am prepared to do the same with the others lol

From what I can tell Soundwave has a code of honour much like Drift and Dreadwing, however it stems from Loyalty to team you side with to the end. Soundwave is much like team Prime, they are loyal to their cause and do not betray out a sense of devotion and sticking with the team

In a version of Transformers I'm working on, the Bots and Cons are exiled from Cybertron due to their war, with many of the Cons, including Soundwave, becoming disenfranchised with how Megatron was leading them, especially going in directions their original cause, their revolution. This would lead them, including Soundwave to join Starscream in reforming the Decepticons to what they once were.
Later on, after Megatron is reborn, Soundwave would get his voicebox pulled out and crushed.

That Astrotrain scene was extremely out of character for Soundwave and was one of the most out of character moments of Teansformers altogether. Who looks back on this scene also thinks this?

Aside from the iconic "Soundwave: Superior" line, I wholeheartedly agree.

This will come across as a strange spitballing theory, but my interpretation of Soundwave is that his cassettes harbor aspects of his personality that he does or doesn’t express. I can’t say for every cassette, but I’ll go roughly with the general three we see in shows:
•Ravage exhibits Soundwave’s efficacy with giving orders; if you want a little more detail on that personality, look at Beast Wars, where he single-handedly could’ve accomplished killing Megatron until he heard him out with the truth behind the golden disc.
•Rumble (or Frenzy, I dunno) exhibits more emotions, with him being referred to as a “thug” who likes to taunt those bigger than him; however, he ain’t the brightest out of the rest of his cassettes.
•Laserbeak is Soundwave’s efficiency when it comes to overlooking everyone beneath him and striking them down if they turn tail. Laserbeak acts as an extra set of eyes and ears, effective for a communications officer and movement coordinator.

I did get the autism vibe from soundwave. A quiet monotone dude with tons of pets who he loves a lot. (I am watching transformers prime (not far in) and he does seem to love laserbeak)

Hey! Great video! May I ask, what is the name of the background music?

During the main video, it's Soundwave's theme from Transformers Devastation. The intro and outro are royalty free medieval music provided by the Relaxation Harmony channel. I have a link to them in the description.

Might I suggest cutting the music while the clips are playing?

I kept the music going in an attempt (a failed one) at avoiding copyright. I've learned some better techniques since, as this is an older video.
