This is the illo sketchbook. Everyone I watch on youtube and all my artist friends love it. I've never known what all the fuss is about so I went to buy it and couldnt get ahold of it for 2 months due to Christmas and them selling out!
I finally received it and today I started a brand new sketchbook...Is it the best sketchbook in the world? Whats all the hype over? I put it to the test.

"Your two broken legs do not make my one broken leg hurt any less." This is a very important saying. It means that you shouldn't compare yourself (or other people in this case) to anyone else because their situation does not invalidate your own - i.e. their pain does not invalidate your pain even if it is worse than yours and, in the same vein, their achievements do not invalidate your achievements even if they achieved more (e.g. one person's A* does not invalidate the other person's B).
    Basically, don't compare!

I think DrawingWiffWaffles probably popularized this sketchbook since it's her favorite, and she's been using them for a while now with all sorts of mediums. It should be noted that when she started using her 2019 illo sketchbook, and using watercolor in it specifically, she observed the freckling that was happening. Apparently, that didn't used to happen and she suspects that they have a new paper formula or something. So when people claim that sketchbook is great for watercolor, they may be users that have experience with older illo sketchbooks.

They sell them on Amazon for similar prices to this Illo book, along with pads and rolls of the same paper. Totally worth the money - you get to use BOTH sides of your paper!

Really nice for alcohol markers and water-based markers. Good for pencil and colored pencil. Works fine for gouache and Posca. Good for watercolor unless you do wet-on-wet, in which case it buckles like crazy. Overall, it’s a really good sketchbook for the price. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely my favorite for the price range.

If you want a sketch book to use with your makers without bleed-through or ghosting...I suggest getting a Crescent Rendr Sketchbook. I have the Crescent Rendr Lay Flat Soft Cover 8.5x 11 in (It does not lay flat ) I have it about filled now being able to use both sides about 46 pages now with maybe less then 20 pages left. All my completed pages are full colored illustrations on both sides with no bleed through. . Its fantastic with my copic markers, its slightly different blending I have to used, compared to my Bristol board. The paper seem to be not a pure white so when coloring the colors can look desaturated till it drys. It not the best with wet mediums, so water color is out of the question. I have used my posca pens, some has curled the page sometimes it curls very little. I have also used Winsor Newton ink with little curling the page. Markers , Color Pencils and Pens seem to be best use for the Rendr Sketchbook.

Jasmin Tea I had some feathering issue when blending with the alcohol markers, but nothing to crazy. To me it’s no different from other paper I had used. You are always gonna have some feathering if you over saturate the paper. Also not all paper handles the alcohol markers the best, like just plain sketchbook paper(that bleeds terribly). If your using like marker paper with the waxy side that can make the markers can pool and bleed bad. I tend to avoid marker paper just cause that reason, even though the markers look the most true to color. Hope that helps.

However 2 years ago I went to my art school which I'm now in but every day I think it's just not fair that the teachers are giving us marks and compare our pictures because every artist has his own 'thing' which he is best at. I found out that everyone of my classmates is good in one thing which is a topic of art. That made me confotable around them so I didn't forced myself to compare myself to them. To hear those things from you again just reminded me to enjoy what I'm doing so thanks a lot. :'D

Alot of female youtubers use their hands alot in videos....
....and make sure their hands , nails etc are on show ..
Shes cashing in .....sexualising her channel.
Alot of people find it very sexy and adore seeing painted nails .
So if you notice , alot channels have hands flying about everywhere .....
...smacking sketchbooks ..whatever it will be....
...especially if they are well manicured etc
Shame really , as I prefer a more humble approach.
Nail varnish is fast becoming a problem as its acrylic based and pollutes the earth.
I dont enjoy seeing hands and nails like this...gets I the way .
Would be nice if " looks" " beauty" and "makeup " disappeared from the screens.
This lady is very clever , she knows all the tricks of the trade to get you watching and subscribing.

Before you go out and buy this sketchbook, if you want to use markers, PLEASE take two extra dollars and buy the rendr softcover sketchbook, it is literally the best for markers because it doesn't bleed through at all, I wouldn't recommend using it with anything more wet though because ink leaves a weird bulge on the other side and watercolor is a mess but it's the best for markers and I want to help my markers fellows! 💕
(The copic sketchbooks suck, don't get them, they bleed when you do the slightest blending)

About the rant... I personally really enjoy your channel because the art and the things you do are so approachable. Effin’ hate watching videos where everything is perfect from start to finish and the artist makes it seem like it’s just a walk in the park to make art like that...
I’m a thousand times more inspired by artists keeping it real and telling their viewers about the things they struggle with. It makes them seem more human and that is so much more relatable. Thanks a bunch for making INCREDIBLY inspiring art and for making me laugh every time I watch your videos !

I just bought a new sketchbook, because when I went to try the Illo, I couldn’t afford it. So I looked through so many sketchbooks and watercolor books, and decided on the “Pentalic Aqua Journal” 5”x8” at Blick’s online shop. I think it was almost $13. I’m in love with it! I’ve used: watercolor, colored pencil, and acrylic paint on it so far. I’m very happy.
Just a little tip, in case you were interested. Illo looks great but I saw the paper was a thinner grade so I knew it couldn’t handle wet media or alcohol without ‘ghosting’.

Let me just tell you. I am an extremely honest person and I wouldn’t lie when I say what I’m about to say. First off don’t comment on anyone’s video if you wouldn’t want someone to say that to you. Unkind comment aren’t welcome in this community. So please leave. Hello beautiful person reading this comment💖I hope your day is filled with the joy and happiness that you deserve. This isn’t going to be a comment like “I love your art ❤️your videos are amazing.” (Even though it’s still nice when ppl say that) No today I’m going to tell you why. Let start with your art, your art has some much colour and happiness and it’s so nice and simple yet so unique and intricate. I love your art because if I like it, I can screenshot it and draw (for practice with credits of course). It’s nice and easy to follow but still keeps my mind working. I think your art has no specific style, but is nice and consistent in the fact that there is lots of detail and lots of colour which gives it that very professional look, yet ever piece has its own touch. Your videos are lovely and very entertaining and very informative too. I think if we took you as a person I would say as your main traits, your are genuine, kind, caring and hilarious 😂. Your videos aren’t too long or too short they are perfect, you post consistently and your channel is just so colourful. Whenever I watch your videos I feel so inspired by you as a person and as an artist. Whenever I’m felling down or upset I come to your happy little channel and I feel so much better. I love that you aren’t afraid to collaborate with other UA-camrs too. There are so many people here who love and care about you, not to mention that personality. Please stay strong and happy like the wonderful person you are❤️🥰😘💕🦄
    Love, Faye 💖😉😘😇💗💕🦄

I saw this thing about how psychologically your sketch looks better then the line art because your brain draws it's own line and it's your ideal one. Also for me, personally... I really like the look of sketchy stuff and the look of graphite. Black lines on white paper is harsh and fuzzy grey lines are soft and kind of inviting.
I use Lazy Nezumi to fix my lines on the computer and I still have to draw it like 4400 times it drives me INSANE sometimes I just SETTLE on one because clearly life is hell. I once just painted over the sketch because I spent 2 hours trying to line it and just decided nothing looked good. One of my more popular arts that year, surprisingly?

I don't normally post comments on videos, but with you mentioning not liking how pencil from the sketch part of the marker drawings bleeds into the marker itself, I thought I might share how I get around that. The two solutions I normally use to get around that are 1) Inking the piece before coloring and then erasing all the pencil underlayer, or 2) doing the pencil sketch on some random paper and then inking over that on marker paper, either using a light box to see it better or just by relying on the translucency of the marker paper. I know you also said you find inking the pieces to be a bit of a nerve wracking process, but those are the two ways to deal with the pencil issue that work best for me.

If you don't want your markers or even watercolours to bleed through the paper and get printed onto the next paper. Use a tracing paper. Place the tracing paper between the sheets of your sketchbook. It will definitely help. I use a 140gsm sketchbook and I'm also worried that the pigments may bleed through it but tracing paper helps me to prevent this

I’m surprised anyone said markers don’t show through the page, they do that to everything, though at least with smoother paper the ink doesn’t bleed out from your drawing itself. Loved the unwrapping during the spon cos after years of watching tons of art tube, even being a member now, I could go without ever hearing of them again tbh. The drawings are really sweet, I like your sketchy castle and the bear’s cute, totally looks like a bear.

When it’s shows through to the other side it’s called ghosting. When people say they that it’s good for watercolor they mean that it doesn’t buckle. Hope this help anyone! :) 😃🙂

This is why you have to know what paper is. The more you spend on a hot press paper the better it will be. The heavier the hot press paper the better it will be. Hot press is smooth. It has no “tooth” I have two watercolor pads from a reputable paper company but below 140 lb weight they suck, excuse me, the higher the weight the better the paper. Or cold press.

A tip I learned from an art UA-camr is that you can draw a sketch on a paper then do the line art in your sketchbook and keep the sketch nice and clean. :)
