This is like the character he did in Absolutely. Brilliant stuff. Sparkes is a genius, shame we don't see much of him in the rest of the UK these days.
John Sparkes is simply brilliant. I've never seen this video before but was nearly wetting myself before the end! That poor woman - but I guess thats what you get for sitting in the front row.
Yeah, as jjdecani says, this character (Gwyn) was in Absolutely, which ran between 1989-1993 and did that 'drunk club singer' thing back then. There was a great sketch that had him stumbling into a shop and talking, basically, nonsense for three minutes ("Well, well, well! Here you are, looking like a couple of Saturday boys!") but Channel 4 have blocked it for copyright infringements in the UK. Amazon are selling the Absolutely Everything box set for £12.50 right now. Yeah, I would, mun.
It pre-dates Vic, I think. Absolutely ran from 1989 to 1993 but I recall seeing Sparkes do this in the early years. I don't think Reeves was ripping him off. I think they both arrived at the comedy club singer idea independently.
This is unbelievably classic! Grew up with this! John Sparkes is Genius!

@ti112200 This character originates from an earlier series than this one, it was called Absolutely and was late 80s early 90s I think.

Is she now your wife?
I'm pretty sure this was originally aired on Welsh channel HTV (ITV1 Wales) around 2001.
