That’s my hometown Philly baby!! I was around 7 then and I remember wanting one so bad. Crying and sobbing . My parents tried like these people and couldn’t get it. Then we went to a family friend’s house for a Christmas function and I was handed a present. I ripped it open and there it was! A pretty black cabbage patch doll with a yellow dress. I was so happy ! These were great times

Oh man, a little black one in yellow! I bet she was a cutie pie! Do you remember her name?

People were literally fighting over these dolls when they first came out. Then in July 1996, Tickle Me Elmo came out and the same thing happened. Parents fighting over them to get for their kids. Weird how people do those kinds of things.

Straight culture is really messed up. They think we're crazy (in the LGBT). Lesbians don't do shit like this. We'd never be up at dawn to go fight over a doll. I'd fight like that over the last beer, though.

@@crazy8skml yep that too. And here recently, the Zhu Zhu pets. I remember when I was still working in retail, those things were selling like hotcakes.

I had no idea that Xavier Roberts didn't even invent these damn things, he basically ripped off the entire look and gimmick from a nice lady who asked very little of the arrangement, which he ignored. Then he had the gall to sue Topps for satirizing the dolls with the Garbage Pail Kids. What a shame that ruthless greedy bastards are usually the ones who get ahead in this world.

    • @rachael943

He didn't just sue Topps, he sued independent doll makers sewing look-alikes who would sell them at craft fairs

I feel like these aren’t Karens. They were upset because they waited the longest and did not get to choose, but people after them who waited less DID get to choose. The store should have been consistent in how they distributed the toys.

I was a teenager when this happened and for the life of me I could not figure out why these people were fighting over the ugliest doll ever made. This was marketing at its absolute finest.

"Ugly" to you but I find the Cabbage Patch kids incredibly cute and adorable! :) 1980s had its problems but also truly seemed magical. I was born in 1996 and I do not think that these were the "ugliest dolls ever made" there are ones that are actually ugly LOL.

At least their boys had hair! Although I can understand why they were upset. They were there earlier and couldn’t choose, but people after them DID get to choose. That’s sorta crappy. The store should have been consistent with their rules.

Karens were a rarer breed back then, it seemed, but not uncommon. Making a public scene was frowned upon. Now it's worse and turned into a sport or even staged and then posted on social media for clicks, likes and profit. Calgon take me away ... sigh ...
