I was 10 in 1984. I think we are all here because we miss these times. It wasn't easy. My dad worked construction & my mom was a lunchroom lady. Economy wasn't great back then. But we always had plenty to eat & my mom & grandmother made our clothes. Going to the mall was a special event lol, just like a bucket of colonel chicken. I would go back in a heart beat. ❤
I was 7 then and obsessed with the escalators and fountains at the mall. Cabbage Patch dolls were so popular that year, but I was really into Transformers.
It's been weird watching shopping malls die out because of online shopping. They were the place to be most my life. I walk into them now and theres hardly anyone there, but in my mind I can still see the crowds of people flowing through them. Never thought I would see them die out.
same here. there are a couple of malls in my surrounding area that still have decent crowds, but the stores and kiosks are mostly junk. a few good stores, but mostly junk and/or food now. i miss shopping for tapes and CDs the most, i think. oh, and the arcades when i was a bit older - nothing like an in person match in x-men vs. street fighter! i would literally sweat lol
I find it weird that brick and mortar are dying out in general.. at least with clothing shops, because I'd rather know what an item will actually look like on me and if it'd fit (because sizing isn't universal..) than having to cross my fingers o-o

Time is crazy. I’m currently 20 years old and these videos fascinate me because it’s like going through a time machine. I think of my loved ones now and imagine what 20 years in the future can look like, what i’ll miss, what’ll be different. I get scared because I know i’ll miss these little moments of just being in the presence of my family. I yearn to return to my childhood and I know I will yearn to be 20 again when I’m older.

I have a three year old son who is my life, and the slow grinding grief of knowing he'll never be that small again is killing me inside. I'm trying my best to enjoy every day, but I know it's going to hurt so much when he loses that sense of innocent childlike wonder 😢
@@T--xk3hf As he grows older, there are other things that you will enjoy with him being older. You will get thrilled on the first day of school, Every little achievement will be celebrated. My children are grown up now and I have seven grandchildren. As they grew up, I always felt a sense of wonder. I could tell you examples, but I just hope you take my word for it. You will not lose any sense of wonder and enjoyment as he goes through childhood.

The 80s was the decade of the Challenger Disaster, Chernobyl, Reagan being shot, the invasion of Grenada & Panama, Iraq-Iran War, AIDS Epidemic, Falklands War, Beirut Bombing, Lockerbie Bombing, Tiananmen Square Massacre and the giant recession in the early 80s. You're just nostalgic for your childhood. For an adult, the 80s was also a stressful, confusing time just like today.
Im literally brought to tears seeing this. I miss this time so so very much. I was young and happy and healthy. My family was all alive and happy. We had hope and Christmas and holidays were magical. The energy in the air at the Malls during Christmas was wonderful. Christmas songs, the crowds, everyone happy. You could just sit and people watch and just take it all in.
I was 12 and my mother was so excited to have got me me on of those dolls. She had adoption papers, a name, everything. She was also blonde haired and blue eyed like my mother, wearing a yellow dress, my mothers favorite color. I can guarantee there was way too much money exchanged to make sure I ended up with a doll my mother wanted. I’m a red head green eyed Barbie and my little pony loving girl who thought it was the ugliest doll I’d ever seen. It lived in the back of my closet. Mom would continuously find that ugly thing and proudly prop it up on my bed.

When the internet first came, I remember how strange the concept was: create an online name (that was not your real name), and say whatever you want without a filter. The concept of being rude or mean without concern for retaliation was new and alien. Then we lost our innocence and freedoms after 9/11. Now we are here.

Malls aren’t the same anymore this is a very crowded scene now people push each other always in a hurry cuss each other out if you don’t move fast enough at least back then you could look at other stores as you walked and could look around a store without being rushed or pushed
Watching this makes me realize how badly we are failing as a society now. Every other person isn’t obese & in a scooter. People dressed nice, even to just do Christmas shopping. You could feel safe out & about, despite the crowds. People just had respect for one another. You don’t see guys with pants half way down their butt or people face down in their phones (talking on speaker phone no less). I miss these times. Seeing this these videos makes me realize just how much I miss these times.
You are 100 percent correct. I get tired of people that always comment that it's just nostalgia and that every decade has its problems. The truth of the matter is that the times we are living in now are unprecedented. It isn't just that we are failing economically, but, as you said, in societal collapse. The obesity you mention has not only been normalized, but glorified. We are living in a time of lies and deceit from our media, and those of us who have woke up to it are painfully aware of just how unaware most of our friends and neighbors are to it. It's sickening to see what we've become as a society, and as a nation.
Nowadays in a mall, if you can find one, everyone looks like what we used to call carnies. My elderly parents visited a mall recently and complained that it was full of riff raff. I told them that that's just what most people seem to be these days. And they're all ready to shoot someone at the slightest offense.
Everyone was patiently waiting in line and there was interaction. Having lived both then and now I would go back in an instant despite the conveniences of today.
1984 was what I call the happy era in my life. It seemed to be a happy and hopeful year for most Americans. It seemed everything was new and fresh and you didn’t see the decay like you see today. The 2020s seem to be the decade of decay for retail like the malls. Only hardware and grocery stores it seems are doing well. I guess Americans don’t have the money to spend because the cost of housing sucks it all up. Young people have no hope today of actually buying a home now because the prices are insane. It depends of what type of job you have yes housing is out of reach for most but save and budget $ maybe one day you can buy one who knows what 2morrow will bring . Remember if you buy get a fixed mortgage.

I was 18... you guys, it was truly a great time. Today, when in think about how things were, It almost feels like there was a happy golucky innocence ...we were all just chill, looking at mtv videos, listening to the radio, shopping at malls, hanging out at parks, picnics, bike rides, block parties, smoking pot was considered edgy. You never even thought about being mugged or pushed onto train tracks when visiting downtown Chicago... people were Def friendlier in all Chicago neighborhoods. I grew up in the north and south sides of Chicago. Never ever had problems... ever.
It feels happy go lucky innocent because you were a teenager lmao. Chicago's crime rate in the 1980s and 1990s was significantly higher than it was in the 2000s and 2010s, only very recently has it started to climb back toward those historic highs. Chicago has been a violent city for one hundred years quite literally.
Never worried about random shootings in those days. I was 8 years old. Loved growing up in 80s. The 80s were great years. Life will never be that way again.
No phones, people happy and talking with one another. Miss it so much. Those good old credit card things where they would slide the handle to make a carbon copy.

I married in 1983. At the time, my now ex-husband worked at a local mall. I went to pick him up on Christmas Eve because we only had one car. The paking lot was huge, but I couldn't find parking anywhere. Finally found one lonely spot way out by the road. I had to walk in to get him, because you know, there were no cell phones then. It was a long trudge in and out. Good times. 😂 That mall was just demolished a few months ago.

This is how I remember the malls during the holidays. No parking. Everyone in the holiday spirit. Now you go to the mall during the holidays and everyone is in a bad mood. The mall is half empty. The internet with all the good it has done has also had just as much of a negative effect. Just IMO. Kids Born in the late 90s and later just will never understand how simple life was. Yes it had its problems and issues, but you knew your neighbors, there was human to human contact, the holidays were magical, going to the mall was actually fun. I truly miss my grandparents and relatives who were all born in the 1920s. I would give anything to spend one more holiday with them. I really took things for granted as a kid and into my teens. I couldn’t wait to grow up now that I’m grown up with kids of my own, I truly regret not living in the moment when I was younger. Life goes by fast my friends. Now that we are so distracted and disconnected it feels like it goes by even faster. These videos do help a little though. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I, too, miss my grandparents and now my sweet mother who has passed too.😔 Time sure does fly by. I can still remember the smells and the feeling of Christmas when I was a kid. I just can't seem to recreate them on my own, and I know that I never will because those that made it so special are gone now and it was them who made it special. I, too, wish I hadn't taken it for granted, thinking they would somehow always be here. This life is cruel, and it does go by so fast. It is nice to have these memories, but sometimes it feels like a curse too to see it knowing that you can never go back. Much of the time now, I just rush through the holidays as they are just reminders of what used to be.

I’m watching this in December 2023. I was 17 in 1984 and the mall or outlet’s was where I got everything . Heck walking the mall with your friends or even your boyfriend, was the thing to do.

@@mark3464 I was 12 in '84. A lot of it is because, the rate was high, but crimes were concentrated more in the inner cities then. In rural areas it was much lower. That's why there is always this dichotomy between people saying crime was low, and then others (normally younger folks) pointing out the crime rate.
It's remarkable that every single person has the exact same body shape. Not one single obese or morbidly obese adult throughout the entire video. No obese children either. As I look around where I am sitting, it's a much different picture. It's a shame what we have allowed the fast/ processed food industry to do to us.
I would love to go back in time on this day and walk around experiencing the atmosphere, stores, people, styles, smells, etc. Then you would find me in the parking lot checking out all the classic cars. I was 16 and a sophomore in 1984, what an amazing time it was. The future looked bright, computers were becoming mainstream in the home, and the movies were awesome. If only we realized back then how special that era was compared to today. It's quite sad, really.

I love this era all way from after WWII up to the 90s. Before any covid, racism, theft, crime, etc...kids had stores and a Toys R Us to visit. Now all you have is amazon where the rich get richer. I feel bad for kids in this present time.
1984 was definitely the first full year of the 80s culture as you can tell from the hair and fashion in this video. If you watch the videos from 80 through 82 and parts of 83 you can see that late 70s culture still heavily represented, but here it's like a different world as the 80s have arrived in full bloom. You can feel it in late 83 as well.

We went to different stores for items. The mega stores weren’t everywhere. Walmart wasn’t in every state yet. Better food quality hence virtually no obesity at least in this clip. Health in general. More modesty. Only some families even had cable TV. Video stores were limited. The F word was extremely inappropriate. People had to walk more. Very little plastic surgery. I normally think these nostalgia videos are subjective, but notice how everyone's heads are up, alert, engaged...if this were filmed today all you'd see is the top of everyone's head looking down at their phones.
Something that stands out is how people/adults are sitting on the floor, against the wall, eating their lunch. There seems to be a more casual attitude about things, and you just don't see that as much these days.
Lots of peak mall videos on this channel, which is great. Such footage is difficult to come by. Many viewers on various dead mall channels ask what malls looked like back then. Often about all one can find are some sparse photographs. Glad to see video of malls in their heyday.
I was 22 in 1984. Worked in a big discount dept store, Murphys Mart. Boy does this take me back! I used to volunteer to work up front at the checkouts, just to meet n greet the customers. Now I'm a 62 year old hermit! 😅
People actually use money back then. Now a days most places don’t even take money. These old videos are a treasure. Those were anxiety free days. Hope whoever reads this has peace in their life. ❤

I remember a store called Sherman Clay that was in local mall they always had a big keyboard or synthesizer set up and playing you could hear it from a long way off.
I remember getting a fake cabbage patch kid first because my grandmother thought they were too expensive. I wasn’t enjoying it so she finally bought me a real one (probably when it went on sale). 😂
Yup, those were good times. I remember the mall being super packed as I window shopped and browsed around as my mom bought gifts. I got my first big allowance too that year, and I got a chance to buy gifts for the family too. I can still taste my burger, fries (which Mom kept stealing off my plate...Lol!), and that icy strawberry milkshake for lunch. Fun times!
I was searching comments for this, I knew it was a metro Atlanta mall by the Rich's & Davison's bags. I still miss Rich's, the best department store. I looked forward to their Harvest Sale every year.
I remember either in 1984 or 1983 when I was 10/11 year old. My parents argued and my mom left to her parents. She stayed for few days then my grandfather came and grabbed my father from his ear and told him go get your wife now. I will never forget it. My dad went and got my mom but they came back so late that night like 3 am. We ended having the best Christmas ever
Only the biggest and busiest malls can come close to what this was like in the 80s. I was a little kid in the 80s and can barely remember the crowds at the Woodfield Mall outside Chicago but malls were different back then. They had a life of their own that can't be explained unless you were there.
I bet back in the 80’s, people were like, “why are you filming us shopping?” “It’s the busiest time of year!” But it’s a genius idea! To capture the past, to one of the best eras of all time.
I grew up in the 80s. Can confirm that most people back them were excited to be on anyone's camera. It's so different now as everyone has their phone out just waiting for a confrontation with anyone.

1984 l was 11 and in the 4th grade. What a wonderful time to be alive. Life was simple and peaceful. Music was every where and better than it is today. People was peaceful and friendly. My children are grown up now and I have seven grandchildren. As they grew up, I always felt a sense of wonder. I could tell you examples, but I just hope you take my word for it. You will not lose any sense of wonder and enjoyment as he goes through childhood.

The 80s was the decade of the Challenger Disaster, Chernobyl, Reagan being shot, the invasion of Grenada & Panama, Iraq-Iran War, AIDS Epidemic, Falklands War, Beirut Bombing, Lockerbie Bombing, Tiananmen Square Massacre and the giant recession in the early 80s. You're just nostalgic for your childhood. For an adult, the 80s was also a stressful, confusing time just like today.
Im literally brought to tears seeing this. I miss this time so so very much. I was young and happy and healthy. My family was all alive and happy. We had hope and Christmas and holidays were magical. The energy in the air at the Malls during Christmas was wonderful. Christmas songs, the crowds, everyone happy. You could just sit and people watch and just take it all in.
I couldn’t have said it any better. I was 11 then and I long to be right back there. We were the last tough generation.
Teenagers always went to the mall, met their friends there ate at food court, it was a thing.

I was 12 and my mother was so excited to have got me me on of those dolls. She had adoption papers, a name, everything. She was also blonde haired and blue eyed like my mother, wearing a yellow dress, my mothers favorite color. I can guarantee there was way too much money exchanged to make sure I ended up with a doll my mother wanted.
I’m a red head green eyed Barbie and my little pony loving girl who thought it was the ugliest doll I’d ever seen. It lived in the back of my closet. Mom would continuously find that ugly thing and proudly prop it up on my bed.

When the internet first came, I remember how strange the concept was: create an online name (that was not your real name), and say whatever you want without a filter. The concept of being rude or mean without concern for retaliation was new and alien. Then we lost our innocence and freedoms after 9/11. Now we are here.

Malls aren’t the same anymore this is a very crowded scene now people push each other always in a hurry cuss each other out if you don’t move fast enough at least back then you could look at other stores as you walked and could look around a store without being rushed or pushed
Watching this makes me realize how badly we are failing as a society now. Every other person isn’t obese & in a scooter. People dressed nice, even to just do Christmas shopping. You could feel safe out & about, despite the crowds. People just had respect for one another. You don’t see guys with pants half way down their butt or people face down in their phones (talking on speaker phone no less). I miss these times. Seeing this these videos makes me realize just how much I miss these times.
You are 100 percent correct. I get tired of people that always comment that it's just nostalgia and that every decade has its problems. The truth of the matter is that the times we are living in now are unprecedented. It isn't just that we are failing economically, but, as you said, in societal collapse. The obesity you mention has not only been normalized, but glorified. We are living in a time of lies and deceit from our media, and those of us who have woke up to it are painfully aware of just how unaware most of our friends and neighbors are to it. It's sickening to see what we've become as a society, and as a nation.
Nowadays in a mall, if you can find one, everyone looks like what we used to call carnies. My elderly parents visited a mall recently and complained that it was full of riff raff. I told them that that's just what most people seem to be these days. And they're all ready to shoot someone at the slightest offense.
Everyone was patiently waiting in line and there was interaction. Having lived both then and now I would go back in an instant despite the conveniences of today.

1984 was what I call the happy era in my life. It seemed to be a happy and hopeful year for most Americans. It seemed everything was new and fresh and you didn’t see the decay like you see today. The 2020s seem to be the decade of decay for retail like the malls. Only hardware and grocery stores it seems are doing well. I guess Americans don’t have the money to spend because the cost of housing sucks it all up. Young people have no hope today of actually buying a home now because the prices are insane. In 1984 it seemed everything was fresh, new, and alive. Not dying and decaying like today.

I was 18... you guys, it was truly a great time. Today, when in think about how things were, It almost feels like there was a happy golucky innocence ...we were all just chill, looking at mtv videos, listening to the radio, shopping at malls, hanging out at parks, picnics, bike rides, block parties, smoking pot was considered edgy. You never even thought about being mugged or pushed onto train tracks when visiting downtown Chicago... people were Def friendlier in all Chicago neighborhoods. I grew up in the north and south sides of Chicago. Never ever had problems... ever.
I grew up in California but watching Ferris Bueller I always thought Chicago was a totally cool place. These days I'd be afraid to visit lol

Chicago's crime rate in the 1980s and 1990s was significantly higher than it was in the 2000s and 2010s, only very recently has it started to climb back toward those historic highs. Chicago has been a violent city for one hundred years quite literally.
Never worried about random shootings in those days. I was 8 years old. Loved growing up in 80s. The 80s were great years. Life will never be that way again.

I married in 1983. At the time, my now ex-husband worked at a local mall. I went to pick him up on Christmas Eve because we only had one car. The paking lot was huge, but I couldn't find parking anywhere. Finally found one lonely spot way out by the road. I had to walk in to get him, because you know, there were no cell phones then. It was a long trudge in and out. Good times. 😂
That mall was just demolished a few months ago.

This is how I remember the malls during the holidays. No parking. Everyone in the holiday spirit. Now you go to the mall during the holidays and everyone is in a bad mood. The mall is half empty. The internet with all the good it has done has also had just as much of a negative effect. Just IMO. Kids Born in the late 90s and later just will never understand how simple life was. Yes it had its problems and issues, but you knew your neighbors, there was human to human contact, the holidays were magical, going to the mall was actually fun. I truly miss my grandparents and relatives who were all born in the 1920s. I would give anything to spend one more holiday with them. I really took things for granted as a kid and into my teens. I couldn’t wait to grow up now that I’m grown up with kids of my own, I truly regret not living in the moment when I was younger. Life goes by fast my friends. Now that we are so distracted and disconnected it feels like it goes by even faster.

I, too, miss my grandparents and now my sweet mother who has passed too.😔 Time sure does fly by. I can still remember the smells and the feeling of Christmas when I was a kid. I just can't seem to recreate them on my own, and I know that I never will because those that made it so special are gone now and it was them who made it special. I, too, wish I hadn't taken it for granted, thinking they would somehow always be here. This life is cruel, and it does go by so fast. It is nice to have these memories, but sometimes it feels like a curse too to see it knowing that you can never go back. Much of the time now, I just rush through the holidays as they are just reminders of what used to be.

The murder rate and crime was massive in the 80s compared to now. Maybe you have such an idyllic memory of that time is because you were a kid.

@@mark3464 I was 12 in '84. A lot of it is because, the rate was high, but crimes were concentrated more in the inner cities then. In rural areas it was much lower. That's why there is always this dichotomy between people saying crime was low, and then others (normally younger folks) pointing out the crime rate.

It's remarkable that every single person has the exact same body shape. Not one single obese or morbidly obese adult throughout the entire video. No obese children either. As I look around where I am sitting, it's a much different picture. It's a shame what we have allowed the fast/ processed food industry to do to us.

I was 16 and a sophomore in 1984, what an amazing time it was. The future looked bright, computers were becoming mainstream in the home, and the movies were awesome. If only we realized back then how special that era was compared to today. It's quite sad, really.

This brings back such happy memories for me. I was in high school in 1984. Believe it or not, we'd get dressed up, just to go to the mall! It was THE place to hang out with your friends. Noticed a few things about the lot - particularly no SUV's, no cell phones and few reverse parkers! Happy days for us teens in the 80's. Don't envy them now.

I love this era all way from after WWII up to the 90s. Before any covid, racism, theft, crime, etc...kids had stores and a Toys R Us to visit. Now all you have is amazon where the rich get richer. I feel bad for kids in this present time.
1984 was definitely the first full year of the 80s culture as you can tell from the hair and fashion in this video. If you watch the videos from 80 through 82 and parts of 83 you can see that late 70s culture still heavily represented, but here it's like a different world as the 80s have arrived in full bloom. You can feel it in late 83 as well.

We went to different stores for items. The mega stores weren’t everywhere. Walmart wasn’t in every state yet. Better food quality hence virtually no obesity at least in this clip. Health in general. More modesty. Only some families even had cable TV. Video stores were limited. The F word was extremely inappropriate. People had to walk more. Very little plastic surgery. Lots of families had a stay at home mom. Better standard of living for middle class. Quieter in general.

I normally think these nostalgia videos are subjective, but notice how everyone's heads are up, alert, engaged...if this were filmed today all you'd see is the top of everyone's head looking down at their phones.

Something that stands out is how people/adults are sitting on the floor, against the wall, eating their lunch. There seems to be a more casual attitude about things, and you just don't see that as much these days.

Ah, I remember 1984, I was 17 and people were cleaner looking., No one was vaping or asking for change. the good old days

I remember a store called Sherman Clay that was in local mall they always had a big keyboard or synthesizer set up and playing you could hear it from a long way off.

I remember getting a fake cabbage patch kid first because my grandmother thought they were too expensive. I wasn’t enjoying it so she finally bought me a real one (probably when it went on sale). 😂

Yup, those were good times. I remember the mall being super packed as I window shopped and browsed around as my mom bought gifts. I got my first big allowance too that year, and I got a chance to buy gifts for the family too. I can still taste my burger, fries (which Mom kept stealing off my plate...Lol!), and that icy strawberry milkshake for lunch. Fun times!
I do remember the food court was so packed you had to sit on the floor along the wall 2:38 LOL
Cumberland Mall in Atlanta. The then regional department store shopping bags always help identify the area.
I was searching comments for this, I knew it was a metro Atlanta mall by the Rich's & Davison's bags. I still miss Rich's, the best department store. I looked forward to their Harvest Sale every year.
I've been to Cumberland! I'm from the West Coast but my best friend, RIP was from Atlanta and I visited all the time.

I remember either in 1984 or 1983 when I was 10/11 year old. My parents argued and my mom left to her parents. She stayed for few days then my grandfather came and grabbed my father from his ear and told him go get your wife now. I will never forget it. My dad went and got my mom but they came back so late that night like 3 am. We ended having the best Christmas ever
Only the biggest and busiest malls can come close to what this was like in the 80s. I was a little kid in the 80s and can barely remember the crowds at the Woodfield Mall outside Chicago but malls were different back then. They had a life of their own that can't be explained unless you were there.

I grew up in the 80s. Can confirm that most people back them were excited to be on anyone's camera. It's so different now as everyone has their phone out just waiting for a confrontation with anyone.

1984 l was 11 and in the 4th grade. What a wonderful time to be alive. Life was simple and peaceful. Music was every where and better than it is today. People was peaceful and friendly. Watching this video reminds me going to the Genesee Mall in Flint MI. Aww the golden eighties of my childhood. There will never ever be a greater time like the early 80's. Thanks for posting.

I remember the radioflyer red wagon we got for Christmas that year. I was as happy as a kid could be.
I got one for christmas in the late 90s. The whole thing was made out of strong metal with thick paint. If you see them today, they are almost entirely plastic

1984, age 12. I got Atari video games for Christmas. Mom shopped at Jamesway, Caldor, Bradlees, and a local Mount Holly department store called Gregory's.
