Gestational Diabetes (Diabetes During Pregnancy) is glucose intolerance that first occurs or is first identified during pregnancy or gestation. There are 2 Types of Gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes occurs due to insulin resistance from increased levels of human placental lactogen and other mechanisms. There are particular maternal findings in Gestational Diabetes and important complications that occur in the neonate. Furthermore, there are important risks and long-term consequences to the mother and child after having Gestational Diabetes, which we also discuss in this lesson.
