James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the Chitlin' Circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the U.S.; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."
Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked the band's three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.

I saw him May 1st in Milwaukee, so this is May 2nd, the next night. My friend Gary Bonzell was 13 and I was 15. We took the bus. The tickets were $4.50. Thanks Captain Midnight!!!
Jere Preisinger yes, this is the May concert tour but didn’t he play milwaukee again in September of the same year? I still have my torn faded purple ticket stub, will have to dig it up and check the date.
damm im jealous dude ! hes playing good for sure
my mind is blown! i can’t imagine how i’d feel being in that crowd, how amazing it must’ve been to see him live! i can almost feel the warmth and excitement of the audience.
I always knew how good Jimi was, but damn he was fantastic
IF HE HAD LIVED A LITTLE LONGER, his Electric Ladyland studio would have produced sounds out of this crummy world.
If I were the president of the USA I'll declare this version of Star Spangled Banner as the official national anthem to be played at all international events.
One additional comment for those who have not seen Jimi live. ..
We were waiting outside the Coliseum for the doors to open...there were two sets of glass doors..an outer an inner...during sound check we heard the bass drum kick test...sounded like a mortar shell...you could feel the impact outside the doors. ..knew we were in for a night with Jimi we would never forget.
Ha loud then!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!
lucky you bro ......
Dangtastic!
I was 6 when Jimi died, -but have
spent my life learning guitar from
listening/watching him. Met Billy
Cox twice, (sent him a demo -and
actually got lots of praise by HIM
-thru a speaker phone six months
later when he said he'd dug it) My
bassist took the call on our break
-from playing Hendrix! Ironic. Our
jaws dropped -as he talked to us!
A feather in my bandana. *Sadly,
the trio fell apart and was ended.
But our old Jimi covers -can still
be seen at this youtube, from an
era I miss. *Visited his stone '95.
Peace ~ A great listen! ~ RG/XR
Awsome. I’ll Check it out brother🙏💜🌈
He does such a cool little triplet type of bit at 29:23 - it's so quick and off the cuff, and I don't think I've ever heard another version of Red House that has that quick little burst. What a concert. He sounds quite inspired and relaxed here, with Mitch & Billy blending really blending and grooving.
One of the best Jimi's live performance.
He was so inspired and fluent this day.
What a loss.
My favorite show of his was an indoor club with the audience all in seats, but some people ended up standing. I hope it appears on youtube sometime. But yeah he had lots of great performances, he was so awesome
@@sabbracadabra8367
Royal Albert Hall?
@@CorbCorbin Thanks I think that's the one! I used to hoard videos back when the internet was new. That was one of my favorites.
By 1970 Jimi's playing really developed, as in his leads and solos became more advant garde and intricate. I personally love his earlier stuff the most '67-'68 and by '69 you hear him leaning into more of the style he plays by 1970.
This is a great 1970 performance with pretty decent sound quality. I love hearing this audiance recordings and closing my eyes and imagining I'm in the crowd.
When I saw Hendrix in May of 1969 (Seattle), I also closed my eyes, stayed seated., and just concentrated on the best riffing I had ever heard! Too many folks were standing on their chairs, just taking in his visual style.
@@curbozerboomer1773ironically my father also saw Jimi May 24th 1969 at the Seattle Coliseum. He too mentioned soon as Jimi came out nearly everyone stood up and people down on the floor rushed to the front of the stage.
Very envious and proud my father got to see and hear Jimi and the Experience in the flesh!
There has to be a club in heaven where you can he hear Hendrix , Coltrane, and Armstrong jamming together
Imagine them playing on a million amplifiers
God bless you and your family
Mike
Hill
And Johnson...
One incredible performance this was. One of my favorites. Ive been a fan since 69. I’m a musician because of Jimi.
what always gets me is how intimate his concerts were
He played for the audience right there, right now. Completely engaged....and at the same time in another world.
I always thought Room Full of Mirrors was about being only able to see yourself and smashing your inner mirrors to see the rest of the world. But Jimi straightened me out.
Both...some of us only see our "scars" when we think of, or see ourselves, its about realizing it and Breaking free..."A Broken Glass was all in My Head...Jangling Broken Glass all in my Brain~ A Broken Glass Was ALL IN MY HEAD...it use to jump out my Dreams and Cut me in my Bed...it USE TO Fall out my Dreams and Cut me in My Bed"~...There's much more to life than our past or our Ego..✌
Maybe the best version of Hear My Train aComin” ever!! I always enjoy the way he talks to his audience too. Awesome find!! Thank you 🙏 for sharing!!
He spoke to the audience because he had mutual respect and love for them. Plus a sense of humor, too.
My preferite Hear my train.. was that in Band of Gypsies. I have to find the cassette because it's not on the tube
Its raw passionate soaring beauty is astounding.
I was there with my brother. And yes. There Was a purple haze in the coliseum. .loud enough to make your ears bleed. But soooo sweet to see Jimi live. Thanks for posting!
You are blessed to witness this performance John. The 'greatest from the greatest' so to speak. No word could do justice for this particular gig
John Fahlstrom funny you say that because it was the loudest concert I ever attended. I noticed my ears ringing on the way home and they never stopped. They have never stopped fucking ringing in 50 fucking years and at times it drives me crazy. All because of that fucking concert and it also was not one of his best, people did not realize it at the time but Jimi was already dead.

People say a lot of things but Hendrix in his last tour, the Cry of Love tour was at his best. Sure he was not as wild as his early days but he wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and was expanding musically. The first 3 posthumous LP's captured a lot of what he was working on. Thanks for posting. Only through modern technology can some of this be put out as well as it is. Old bootlegs really sucked for the most part. good to hear him chatting up the peoples
Plus, his songwriting kept getting better.
Totally Agree.
He def was getting better and innovating rock music. Who knows what he could've created in the 70s had he not died.
my favourite are these 1970 ones
Great version but the Rainbow
What can you say?! A legend! Some people said the Experience was a hoax, nobody could play guitar like that!
Not just ripping through the set list. Very connected and communicating with the audience especially the 1st half of the show. The most soulful version of Red House ever. Heartfelt. Hendrix the artist shaping sound and tone like he is working in clay.
try listening to the san diego red house its insane, my favorite version i think.
@@jabbertab
I agree. The jazzy breakdown it has is so good, along with when they get loud again.
nobody has ever used a wah better than jimi
I tried when younger but nothing like
Jimi
or the whammy bar. that sweeping motion that he had down.
CURTIS MAYFIELD DID!!!! GO CHECK OUT THE SUPERFLY ALBUM!!!
Frank zappa. And he introduced jimi to that pedal.
@@nealgoldstein4578 can you cite a source on that?
I’m blown away with this show
18 wankers gave the show the thumbs down, seriously these wee dickheads wudny know a guitar if it was wrapped hard on their napper.
I have often figured his practice sessions where his live concerts! He was free to experiment. And never were his songs identical to the albums!
practice is practice - Jimi improvised in the live context
the easiest way to explain Jimi as a guitar player....... there is JIMI ,and then there's everyone else......
Jimi must be deep into his next lifetime by now. Maybe not, but I'm still discovering what he did in his last one.
F A N T A S T I C to be hearing these live clips of Jimi"s shows. Thankyou-------so much. There never will be another Jimi H.
One of Jimi’s finest shows posted.
Red House!! Amazing!!
I have been a fan of jimi Hendrix since I was 14 years old and I am still enjoying listening to his music
Me too, since first album , 1967,
Me 16 now 70. Still hear new things in same music , and regularly have another higher more appreciation of what he was playing, as though I hadbt really paid full attention, and missed a dimension that becomes another awareness to hear in the rest of his playing.
He is always newly extra dimensional.
I wonder what other people hear...I wish I could hear with others's ears . Probably as varied as each person's experience of living.
That's Hendrix. Why I continue to listen. Always new always varied.
Me too I'm 66yrs young he has changed my life profoundly his musicianship he was cool his style of dress his overall presence was amazing happy birthday Jim I'm flying my freak flag high!!😄
@@howardacquistapace2782 you are lit !
Always blows me away first time I heard the univibe in hear my train and the wah pedal in the solo of lover man so cool how he always used his effects differently !
Still the finest show I've heard posted. Many other fine shows also, but this show stands out.
The best concert I ever attended. Thank you.
Fifty years ago tonight - amazing!
Two days later Kent State happened. I think it was probably the next day that I watched from the top floor of the main library as officers from the Madison police and County sheriff's department arrived, jumped out of their cars, surrounded the lawn in front of the library, rushed in and started clobbering students in broad daylight who had been listening to anti-war speeches.
It got really crazy for a while after that- especially at night--fires in the streets, tear gas, police helicopters, friends getting clubbed for just walking home from the club.
m. d......memory is selective, I have a good memory but do not remember the story you just told.
@@Dixler683 that’s because memory is selective. as you have just said yourself. you don’t remember it. sad :/
@@jakerinker8522 well okay then, but riddle me this. I was there and do not remember the tale as told by “md” . Were you there to corroborate the story? Funny how YOU refute my statement but when challenged “md” clammed up. I will admit that I sometimes remember an event one way , checking my journals I discover I was totally wrong. That could be the case here, except the embellished tale is suspect. Were you there?
hendrix feeling depents on how his psychological situation in the moment was. in his music i hear sometimes other worlds, dreams but sometimes just depression.when he had good times he sound for me so impressed and so spirituell, that i forget all these deep human times which makes this existence so hard. i remember a dream when i dance to his music. it was so real and so extatic. hendrix in the west is such a thing. red house is so authentic and spirituell in one. i never hear a music which brings me in this feeling, like "in the west".
hendrix is for me a soulbrother. when i was 19 i had as a guitarrist sometimes this feeling to go in other worlds. long time ago. he inspired me to that moments. personal history , by the way. manic depressions touch in my soul.......my old brother.
This recording is just sublime in nature & scope!
Jimi is the only artist that really comes through my phone well . Coincidently, Joni sounded nice too today from Isle of Wight festival footage that just came out on You Tube..... Love to you 🙏🌈🎶🍄💜🦅🙏
So Great ,,, What an Artist
Amazing. Im transcended by his technicality and sheer cutting edge groove...He's funny as well. Great find Thanks for sharing.
this is a great post, it also shows what a great bass player Billy Cox was, really solid playing laying down the perfect background for Jimi. No offense to Noel at all though, Billy was the natural progression in Jimi's progress, its a shame Jimi left Earth so early.
Great gig. Always glad to hear Machine Gun, the greatest twisted blues ever in my view. It's funny how Jimi rarely played songs from Axis despite it being such a wonderful album, usually just Spanish Castle Magic and the occasional Little Wing yet many from Are You Experienced. Perhaps they didn't lend themselves to live performance, but I guess with such an output it would be hard to have rehearsed everything for the shows. Not many from Electric Ladyland hit the stage either. I have to say I like the 1970 line up the most, Billy Cox really has a groove on and the music has greater soul. Thanks for uploading this.
Hear My train A'comin' !! Dayummm! Play on Jimi!! Great show all the way thru!!
Yea! Hear My Train,I agree, their finest performance of one of their finest platforms to unleash. Stupendous! In fact,I rekon ,from a kiwis perspective, this whole gig rivals the Winterland gigs for absolute sustained brilliance throughout. And the band loved every second of it. Like me. Thanks Cappie
Where did those runs come from. He always showed out on that song. This is one of the absolute best! Fantastic!
JIMI ,THRU HIS TALENT AND GENIUS MADE ALL THE OTHER ,THEN AND NOW GREAT GUITARIST,s PLAY TO BE BETTER MUSICIAN,s. BUT JIMI WAS A GREAT SONG WRITER OF LIFE EXPERIENCE,s, HIS FORSIGHT WILL NEVER BE MATCHED BY ANYONE.😎🎸🎶🔊☮️ BOB.
A one of a kind "musical" genius and musical "prophet", he "actually" heard his train coming. Thank God for sharing his "experience" and existence with us, his influence , sound and genius, will always be recognized, he is a gift, that will forever be enjoyed by those that are blessed to hear his "musically created" "messages"...
Just hearing this for the first time tonight: 11 of march 2022 ,here in the Dominican
With my sweetheart not far away from the bed ......shit it is so good
Thank you capt midnite but,hey THANK you JIMI
Oh man..! Hear my train? Artistic universal sincerity in pure expression of experience. Thanks so much. My mother just passed away. September 18. Spirit lives eternal.
Man what a trip the musicians had with Jim. He could straight express himself as the instrument sung for him. This facility has a great sound. Nice job on the recording.
The first time I heard Jimi's music was in 2005 , mainly studio recordings of purple haze and voodoo child when i had just picked up guitar, but I did not get his music or listen to it at the time. I was into Metallica and similar heavy metal bands. Then from 2015, after discovering his numerous bootlegs and live albums, it completely changed the way i think of music and guitar playing. He's just something else. Just out of this world, hands down the greatest guitar player there ever was, and still remains.
You made a good decision ! It will help your all around musical skills more than Metallica or other metal bands ever could.....Play on....!
Dude I could name a few axe man who where better Now don,t get me wrong I play my strat upside down but the greatest not by a long shot he wouldn,t have pick off with Roy buchanan
And Metallica. Sucks. Davy m
The man was taking lesson from Steven still. and Frank zappa
Here u go Stevie Ray Vaughan, Roy bachanan , Gary Moore , Rory Gallagher ,Randy Rhoads ,Roy Clark
I can't say which is the best blues tune of all time but whatever it is, I think Jimi Hendrix was the one who played it. His emotions come from such depths.
My god!!!! Beautiful
Cap Midnite . A Live Jimi show is like a Very Fine wine , More Potent than when it was Bottled . THNK. YoU !
I think playing with Billy Cox relaxed Jimi. He was playing great on this set.
OK, so this doesn't at all sound like 63 years ago! Neither his guitar 🎸 nor the sound quality.
Outstanding.
So you played this last weekend Jimi? You guys are fantastic. 🎉

There is an intimate feeling you get hearing the crowd conversation sprinkled through the performance. I also love the tuning up and his golf comment before message to love which was one of the most outstanding versions I've heard.
