James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the Chitlin' Circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the U.S.; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."
Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked the band's three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.

One additional comment for those who have not seen Jimi live. ..
We were waiting outside the Coliseum for the doors to open...there were two sets of glass doors..an outer an inner...during sound check we heard the bass drum kick test...sounded like a mortar shell...you could feel the impact outside the doors. ..knew we were in for a night with Jimi we would never forget.

I was 6 when Jimi died, -but have
spent my life learning guitar from
    listening/watching him. Met Billy
Cox twice, (sent him a demo -and
actually got lots of praise by HIM
-thru a speaker phone six months
later when he said he'd dug it) My
bassist took the call on our break
    -from playing Hendrix! Ironic. Our
jaws dropped -as he talked to us!
A feather in my bandana. *Sadly,
the trio fell apart and was ended.
But our old Jimi covers -can still
be seen at this youtube, from an
era I miss. *Visited his stone '95.

He does such a cool little triplet type of bit at 29:23 - it's so quick and off the cuff, and I don't think I've ever heard another version of Red House that has that quick little burst. What a concert. He sounds quite inspired and relaxed here, with Mitch & Billy blending really blending and grooving.

By 1970 Jimi's playing really developed, as in his leads and solos became more advant garde and intricate. I personally love his earlier stuff the most '67-'68 and by '69 you hear him leaning into more of the style he plays by 1970.
This is a great 1970 performance with pretty decent sound quality. I love hearing this audiance recordings and closing my eyes and imagining I'm in the crowd.

People say a lot of things but Hendrix in his last tour, the Cry of Love tour was at his best. Sure he was not as wild as his early days but he wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and was expanding musically. The first 3 posthumous LP's captured a lot of what he was working on. Thanks for posting. Only through modern technology can some of this be put out as well as it is. Old bootlegs really sucked for the most part. good to hear him chatting up the peoples

He is always newly extra dimensional.
I wonder what other people hear...I wish I could hear with others's ears . Probably as varied as each person's experience of living.

Fifty years ago tonight - amazing!
Two days later Kent State happened. I think it was probably the next day that I watched from the top floor of the main library as officers from the Madison police and County sheriff's department arrived, jumped out of their cars, surrounded the lawn in front of the library, rushed in and started clobbering students in broad daylight who had been listening to anti-war speeches.
It got really crazy for a while after that- especially at night--fires in the streets, tear gas, police helicopters, friends getting clubbed for just walking home from the club.

hendrix feeling depents on how his psychological situation in the moment was. in his music i hear sometimes other worlds, dreams but sometimes just depression.when he had good times he sound for me so impressed and so spirituell, that i forget all these deep human times which makes this existence so hard. i remember a dream when i dance to his music. it was so real and so extatic. hendrix in the west is such a thing. red house is so authentic and spirituell in one. i never hear a music which brings me in this feeling, like "in the west".
hendrix is for me a soulbrother. when i was 19 i had as a guitarrist sometimes this feeling to go in other worlds. long time ago. he inspired me to that moments. personal history , by the way. manic depressions touch in my soul.......my old brother.

Great gig. Always glad to hear Machine Gun, the greatest twisted blues ever in my view. It's funny how Jimi rarely played songs from Axis despite it being such a wonderful album, usually just Spanish Castle Magic and the occasional Little Wing yet many from Are You Experienced. Perhaps they didn't lend themselves to live performance, but I guess with such an output it would be hard to have rehearsed everything for the shows. Not many from Electric Ladyland hit the stage either. I have to say I like the 1970 line up the most, Billy Cox really has a groove on and the music has greater soul. Thanks for uploading this.

There is an intimate feeling you get hearing the crowd conversation sprinkled through the performance. I also love the tuning up and his golf comment before message to love which was one of the most outstanding versions I've heard. This was a really clean recording even though it was from the audience.

I remember the cd bootleg may have had a Europe location on it. This was 98 at a cd warehouse where I heard this bootleg. Wish I could have bought it.
