One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness, it was a world of fear, it was the age of Gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night. We were betrayed by the humans we were sworn to protect. Frozen in stone by a magic spell for 1000 years. Now here in Manhattan, the spell is broken and we live again! We are defenders of the night, we are GARGOYLES!
Same here. I remember seeing the series for the first time, and even to this very day... I'm still a fan of it, always wishing that we could get more of it again. Even if the likeliness of that happening it's entirely likely. I remember getting some of the toys, the vhs, heck even that little handheld game Jordan mentioned at the end.
Funny story, I met Keith David, the voice of Goliath, this year and man, I asked him if he still remembered the opening from gargoyles.... he does and he said it, I really wish I would've recorded it, chills just thinking about it, he is the greatest, really enjoys talking to the fans and he's open to coming back to gargoyles any time
I think it has more to do with availability. Prior to putting it on Disney Plus, the only way to watch it was to buy it and it was expensive and separated into a bunch of different sets. I doubt most Disney Execs are even aware of its existence. And even if they were, they would probably screw it up. That’s what they did in the 90s.
I think if remember they tried but the problem is finding a director. The theme direction and length is what a lot of candidates were unsure about. Which is a fair concern, what do you make the movie, about? How do you compress enough lore to make it make sense. To me a fan I could rattle off a bunch of facts and recognize everything that would be explained to me but someone whose never heard of the ip it can be confusing. Science and sorcery is a tricky affair.
Me and my mother were watching it as it was a beloved part of her childhood and we were talking about how cool the diversity was and how like NO ONE talks about it. But I love this being brung up now because I love Elisa.

I recently rewatched the first season on my downtime while on a work trip. I loved this show as a kid but as an adult I was expecting just to experience a little bit of Saturday morning cartoon nostalgia. Instead, I ended up appreciating the show even more as an adult
I rewatched the series a few months ago due to having down time and wanting to look through the series to see if it held up (was going through a nostalgia phase or something watching JLU, Static Shock- all the shows I grew up watching). I would always stay up late as a kid (I'm a night owl) so when my mom finally was able to afford installing cable I would always catch the episodes that the Disney channel played late at night and was memorized by the show. It's kind of amazing how much that show helped shape my morals (not giving bigots the satisfaction of being the monster they think you are, fighting hate with love, giving people second chances, but also knowing when to let go of those who are toxic, understanding generational trauma and learning to forgive but not forget ect ect). Watching the show as an adult really made me appreciate how much effort everyone went through to make it and how people like me who grew up with shows like this kind of took it all for granted. The representation was spot on too- like, it wasn't in your face but it was there, it was one of the things I liked about the show because I was a mixed race kid living in a predominantly Caucasian area so I could identify with both Goliath and the other Gargoyles (being alienated by others) and Elisa (the obvious being that she's mixed race just like I am). Whenever I have children I hope I'll be able to show them this series to hopefully inspire them too.

One reason I love this show is that it feels almost like a successor to the "Beauty and the Beast" tv show, except on the rooftops instead of underground. I wish there were more shows like these: smart, well-written dramas with action and some romance. I can't see current Disney doing that though.
The irony of your comparison to Beauty and the Beast is that in a Halloween episode, Eye of the Beholder, Elisa wears Bell's ball gown. Elisa- a mixed race woman, wore Bell's dress. can you imagine how controversial that would be now?
@@UbinTimor considering how the new velma just changed the races of the scooby gang minus Fred, yeah I can kinda see how controversial it would be today, especially with all the cultural appropriation speakers and representation promoters there are today.
YES! And the way the lesions learned would CHANGE the characters interactions and outlook on life was crazy, like when broadway learned about guns and not to mess with them after accidentally hurting Elisa and then became very concerned and protective of her in every episode after that just blew my tiny mind. What a masterpiece, what a gem.
The Gargoyles world tour in season 2 easily ranked in the top 5 of American animated stories back then. And it still holds up. Weisman’s crew crafted an amazing story. Sadly, Disney gave the series over to the TV Animation department and they destroyed what could have been a legendary run.
Literally one of my favorite shows ever! My mom and I watched this back in the day and I watched it again with my wife during the pandemic to introduce it her. I have a Goliath figure on my desk as well.
I loved this series as a child, my mom even bought me every action figure one Christmas. Dark, Philosophical, Gothic and action packed. This is one reboot I would love to see, surprised a film hasn’t been made. Disney is nothing if not opportunistic.
Ah Gargoyles! Now HERE is a show that holds up amazingly well! I once heard someone describe it as “Beauty and the Beast meets Batman”… and yeah, in a weird way that does describe it, at least on the core level 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 Watched through it again as an adult on Disney+ and was amazed at how good the show still is, even realising it was a LOT deeper and more well developed than I realised as a kid, meaning I could enjoy it on a whole new level now!
You made me flash baaaack for this one. I loved the "darker" more story driven way it was run. Very welcoming to edge lords in the making. And adults won't run for the hills right off the bat either. And they even had tons of goofiness mixed in. Chef's kiss show.
This is one of my all time favorite series. Obviously, I didn't discover it until well after its time as it began airing a year before I was born. But I discovered the series while I was in high school thanks to, of all people, the Nostalgia Critic's review of it. I watched through the series on UA-cam (back when you could just find full episodes of shows on UA-cam) and fell in love with it. I'm definitely looking forward to the new comics and I hope we get to see a revival show at some point! Brooklyn and Lexington were my personal favorite characters.
I use to watch Gargoyles when it aired when I was like toddler-young and later child-young. My mom would sit with me and watch it too but she used to say it was kind of weird. It didn't scare me since my mom and I also watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer at that time. I have memories of the other gargoyles getting frozen in stone in the early flashback and how devastated Goliath was. I use to remember it incorrectly that it happened in New York because they didn't make it home and were smashed to death but it was in-fact the flashback. I also remembered how they had to get home before morning to be safe there. I also loved Elisa and thought she was so cute. A few years ago my mom and I re-watched it and it was incredible, even better than I remembered. Great story, voice-acting, loved the villain, the Shakespeare, I loved the gun episode, the racism metaphors, Goliath and Elisa's relationship, it was incredible. It was supposed to be even edgier I believe but they had to cut it back for more nick-at-night. I agree that the last season doesn't count, it's pretty garbage. I would not like more Gargoyles, I like how it ended, if you don't count the last non-canon season. Sidenote: I call Bronx a Guardgoyle
I am so glad you did a retrospective on Gargoyles! I've recently been rewatching it and still love the hell out of it! EDIT: OMG I never knew that Gummi Bears was an inspiration for Gargoyles! Gummi Bears was another show I grew up with, in fact my jr soccer team was named the Gummi Bears because all the kids on the team watched it lol Also, Bronx has I think only one line of actual words (according to the CC anyway) in the 1st season. He says "I know, I know." in response to one of the Gargoles telling him something, maybe leaving him at the castle alone.
My parents recently showed me this show and while I only saw the first episode, I loved it. Really need to continue it. Also I did get to hear them talk about how weird it was to hear it in English instead of Icelandic and I honestly relate so much to that XD I can't watch most barbie movies if they are not in either Icelandic or Danish.
How could I forget THIS masterpiece of television! I mean I can only remember parts of it but I know that it was amazing. The animation, characters action, setting everything about this was just great! It was darker the most others Disney shows especially at the time, which were more humor based then actions like this one was. It was a nice change of pace, and it worked really well. I really hope this get a reboot, there was a reference to it in the first episode of the duck tales reboot so hopefully that means it’s one people’s minds.
I remember this show when I was a kid, you have to see the Brazilian Portuguese of Goliath, the VA managed to make him so deep and intimidating, but also wise and respectful
Omg!!! This show was my and my sister's favorite show growing up! I never realized how much it and the batman shows influenced my interest in gothic stuff.
Loved this show as a kid. I think shows like Gargoyles or Scooby-Doo Mytery Inc. deserve the Ben 10 treatment aka longer videos. Btw, since you asked at the end of your "The Fall of Ben 10". I actually watched all three retrospective videos in their entirety.
This show got me through lot of lockdown and it’s what got me into reading old literature. Season 3 was a shame but let’s hope the creator gets his show back!
Ahh gargoyles, a classic. About two years ago, my brother(who was staying over for a bit) while we were hanging out, decided to show me Gargoyles on Disney +(since it was recently added on there at the time, all three seasons). He told me it was one of his favorite shows growing up and so we watch it. We ended up watching the entirety(yes even season 3) together each night when he stayed with us and I’m so glad he did. This show that I miss when it aired, now resides within my heart with being able to see it all and I honestly think this series could make a comeback; whether spin-off or continuation.
I loved Gargoyles. To the point where my parents rented the few VHS releases the show had in the '90s. Including the movie version of the five episode pilot "Awakenings", Gargoyles the Movie: The Heroes Awaken.
This was the show that I could watch with my dad as he loved the historical aspect. I have a Disney+ subscription only because I love this TV show so much. It is a TV show my father still regularly watches because he has good memories of watching it with his eldest daughter and later on my younger sister. It is one of the best TV shows Disney has put out there. And as long as I have a Disney+ subscription, I guarantee you I will watch the television show devotedly every weekend. The theme song is equally perfect for the series 10 out of 10 would easily suggest anybody get a Disney+ in budget to watch this absolutely spectacular cartoon.
This is one of the most mature series Disney ever made and I’m still shocked they made it! I rank this show up there with the likes of Avatar the last Airbender.
I feel bad because this year I'm only just now getting into Gargoyles. But the more I watched it, the more I realized it's never too late to get into this gem of a show. It ages so well and it's something adults could really enjoy still.
YESSS I remember Gargoyles. Oddly enough that's the one Disney cartoon that I remember so vividly amongst all the other more comedic and goofy Disney cartoons at the time. Sure, I remember Talespin and Rescue Rangers, and even The Little Mermaid and Aladdin (the cartoons of the movies), but Gargoyles was my absolute favorite Disney cartoon of all time. :)
I knew nothing about Gargoyles until my Disney vacation trip at the age of 12. Bummed out that I’d have nothing to watch on tv in the hotel (because that’s all a 12 year old wants to do), I flipped through the channels & found the Disney station. (or it might’ve been Jet-X at that point) Seen Gargoyles & IMMEDIATELY fell in love 😍
I was just re-watching an episode of this show last night and saw this pop up in my subscriptions today. Future Tense is such a tough ep to watch for me, even knowing about the twist at the end. Some of my favorite memories from my high school days in the early 2010's was rushing home to watch the episodes I had DVR'd. I would catch it on Disney channel when I was in elementary school but never gave it a chance since it looked too "dark and mature" for me at the time, so glad I ended up getting into it later when I was old enough to appreciate its themes more. I need to pre-order that new comic too, btw
The show hits multiple levels for me. I used to love this show as a kid and stay up late past my bed time and get in trouble just to try to get an episode or two in. Randomly years later because I'm a tall guy in the rave scene they gave me the nickname Goliath and I got Goliath from the gargoyles tattooed on my leg. Also as a little kid this show was the first thing that introduced me into conspiracy theories, the Illuminati and secret societies

Same. Made me really respect this show. they didn't shy away from that issue, an issue that was at an all time high in the early 90s in big cities here in the states.
This is something that kids in the 90s and early 2000s seemed to click with, this is also a series that holds much nostalgia that still holds up for most the show to this day. Also, the castle on top of the skyscraper is the greatest thing I've seen in a cartoon
When Disney+ launched I was finally able to watch the series fully, and get the whole picture of what the story was about which blew me away. Shame there was never another season. Keep up the good work JF!
I love Gargoyles I watched it as a kid and when I was 15 I burned all the episodes on dvds and rewatched it from the start. Also Brooklyn is my favorite Gargoyle
My father watched this show when he was a kid (He was born in 82). After I was born he introduced it to me through DVDs, and later in life I rewatched it through Disney+. This show will forever be my favorite show with the best intro and intro music.
I would really like to see a continuation of the initial two seasons. Especially knowing about Time Dancer and Gargoyles 2198 planned spin-offs. Alas, after seeing how many old franchises revived or rebooted today just to be run into the ground by the new generation of "creators", I'm very skeptical about that.
JORDAN!!!! Thank you for talking about Gargoyles!!!!! You have definitely done it justice with your discussion and info. I have been a Gargoyles fan since day 1. I can not wait to see how the story continues in the new comic continuation coming. Thank you again Jordan!!!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. That was a Cool show back when I was a kid watching Fox Kids on Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons. Awesome. Spiderman and X-Men were awesome as well.
He even admits afterward that it was stupid. Elisa never fully blames him either. She takes responsibility for leaving it lying around and is later seen locking up her gun. It's a good episode.

Just realized it when you were talking about their character traits, They're literally the Ninja Turtles. Goliath = Leonardo (leader); Brooklyn = Raphael (2nd in command, temper mental); Broadway = Michelangelo (goofy/comedic relief); Lexington = Donatello (tech nerd); Hudson = Splinter (group mentor); Detective Maza = April
"Pay a man enough, and he'll walk barefoot through hell." This is one of the most hardcore lines ever written, and it was said by Xanatos. This show was truly amazing.

The Gargoyles world tour in season 2 easily ranked in the top 5 of American animated stories back then. And it still holds up. Weisman’s crew crafted an amazing story. Sadly, Disney gave the series over to the TV Animation department and they destroyed what could have been a legendary run.
I completely agree, after season two world tour and its beautiful story and interesting dive into Elisa, it became the definition of “it fell off”.
I love Gargoyles so much, I love talking about it and telling people to watch it. It is so good on so many levels.
Ah Gargoyles! Now HERE is a show that holds up amazingly well! I once heard someone describe it as “Beauty and the Beast meets Batman”… and yeah, in a weird way that does describe it, at least on the core level 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
Watched through it again as an adult on Disney+ and was amazed at how good the show still is, even realising it was a LOT deeper and more well developed than I realised as a kid, meaning I could enjoy it on a whole new level now!
Me and my Mom watched this together it was our show. I love this series.
You made me flash baaaack for this one. I loved the "darker" more story driven way it was run. Very welcoming to edge lords in the making. And adults won't run for the hills right off the bat either. And they even had tons of goofiness mixed in. Chef's kiss show.
I would be ECSTATIC if this show came back and continued! It's fantastic!
Gummi Bears was another show I grew up with, in fact my jr soccer team was named the Gummi Bears because all the kids on the team watched it lol
Also, Bronx has I think only one line of actual words (according to the CC anyway) in the 1st season. He says "I know, I know." in response to one of the Gargoles telling him something, maybe leaving him at the castle alone.
Jordan, I have been watching for a while and I have to say you keep hitting the spot. This show was awesome and it's rarely talked about!
This was literally my favorite show growing up
How could I forget THIS masterpiece of television!
Absolutely loved this show growing up
One of my absolute favorites of all time!! Thailog was my fav from the show. So so so happy that Neca has been making action figures of them!
I actually watched all three retrospective videos in their entirety.
another show from my childhood that I barely remember but now desperately want to go and watch again all thanks to you😜
This show was so underrated! I loved it growing up but so many of my friends never heard of it
should have a watch party with them.
I have so many fond memories from this show. Made me appreciate darker and more serious themes.
Gargoyles is such a good underrated show
Thanks for covering this it's one of my favorite shows ever
This was one of my favorite shows as a kid!
Dynamite Comics is publishing new Gargoyles comics that are coming out soon!
And Weisman said they are canon!
This is one of the most mature series Disney ever made and I’m still shocked they made it! I rank this show up there with the likes of Avatar the last Airbender.
Such a good show. In the same league as BTAS when I was a kid. Great atmosphere, music, and voice actors.
just as good animation as BTAS, definitely part of the appeal, it was so dark, yet still colorful and expressive.
@@UltimateGamerCC I couldn’t agree more I love both of them and it really makes sense why
I feel bad because this year I'm only just now getting into Gargoyles. But the more I watched it, the more I realized it's never too late to get into this gem of a show. It ages so well and it's something adults could really enjoy still.
I was literally thinking during your last video that you should do gargoyles! How awesome!
Also as a little kid this show was the first thing that introduced me into conspiracy theories, the Illuminati and secret societies
hell yeah i remember this show, i even had action figures from it. honestly surprised it hasn't been rebooted yet, or had a live action version
Thank you so much I’ve been waiting for you to analyze my favorite show growing up
I completely avoided the show as a kid, but it was the first series I watched on Disney+ when I got it, seeking to rectify such a blunder.
as the saying goes, "better late than never."
That Muary Edit as my
STOMACH HURTING From LAUGHING 😭😭😭😔😭🤣😭🤣
The way you Even Put Broadways face in the Baby Monitor Screen
Omg 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Okay lemme Keep Watching
I Love Your Videos Man
You are Freaking HILARIOUS
and Insightful
May God Continue Bless You Foreal
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💐💐💐🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Gargoyles will always be a staple in my childhood
Jordan… your videos make me so emotional. I really love your content and your devoted dedication towards shaping yourbcontent to be perfect for anyone to watch… watching these make me so emotional. Thank you for always igniting these small yet impactful nostalgic memories I had as an kid. Ily never stop doing what you do ❤
This show rocked! Even tho i only saw reruns i think it still holds up well
Great intro. Just the right amount of darkness to make my little mind start thinking in a greater way.
Finished this show late last year. The gun episode threw me for a loop. Did not expect that
I'm pray that one day Disney gives this show another season like what they're doing with X-Men.
there's new comics coming out in December written by Greg Weisman by Dynamite. You can pre order them now even.
I loved "Gargoyles" and "Gummi Bears" as a kid! I hope do a video on the "Gummi Bears" next!
I had the VHS made up of the first 3 episodes and I didn’t realize for like a decade that it was a full show
I was literally thinking about this series yesterday and was planning a rewatch. Thanks for this fun & timely video lol
I loved this show as a kid! I would love to see more!
Just like Samurai Jack had a late continuation, maybe this will too.
You should check out the Gargoyles comics from Dynamite. It’s the continuation of the story!
@@kaydee66781 oh, that's cool 😲 I'll check it out, if I don't forget 😅
When Disney+ launched I was finally able to watch the series fully, and get the whole picture of what the story was about which blew me away. Shame there was never another season. Keep up the good work JF!
I love Gargoyles I watched it as a kid and when I was 15 I burned all the episodes on dvds and rewatched it from the start. Also Brooklyn is my favorite Gargoyle
Yes I remember and it’s still within my top five shows of all time
Of course I remember gargoyles!! It was such an amazing show!!!!😁😁
My father watched this show when he was a kid (He was born in 82). After I was born he introduced it to me through DVDs, and later in life I rewatched it through Disney+. This show will forever be my favorite show with the best intro and intro music.
How did I just now realize that Lex is Donatello. Broadway is Mikey, and Brooklyn is Leo. The kid Gargoyles are just the TMNT
Fantastic job. I am so glad I found this, thanks!
It was continued in the 2006 comic from SLG, and will be revived again in a new series from Dynamite.
Both series are fully canon.
JORDAN!!!! Thank you for talking about Gargoyles!!!!! You have definitely done it justice with your discussion and info. I have been a Gargoyles fan since day 1. I can not wait to see how the story continues in the new comic continuation coming. Thank you again Jordan!!!! Keep being you and sharing your take on everything and anything you want to talk about!!!!! You are awesome!!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words and support!
@@JordanFringe94 Thank you for always being one of the best UA-camrs and people there is. Its been awhile since we talked, but I have been following you since I found you back in the Spyro days.
Let's be honest, Demona is the one of the reasons we like bad girls.
I was always a big fan of Una myself.
"Well, this is... diverting." "You don't know the half of it."
She was so toxic though.
@@kellharris2491 we all thought we could change her tho
Gargoyles is my favourite childhood show but this summer I’ve been watching the show once again on Disney+
After watching this and getting another boost of nostalgia of my childhood does anyone else remember The TV show called the mummy basically a spinoff of the movie but in cartoon different story and all
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. That was a Cool show back when I was a kid watching Fox Kids on Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons. Awesome. Spiderman and X-Men were awesome as well.
Will never forget the episode where Broadway accidentally shoots Elisa when playing around with her gun after watching too many movies
He even admits afterward that it was stupid. Elisa never fully blames him either. She takes responsibility for leaving it lying around and is later seen locking up her gun. It's a good episode.
This show had such an impact on me as a teenager, especially in my art. Quite simply the finest toon of my lifetime
Can I just say your perfectly timed commercial breaks are the best I have ever seen.
So that's why that episode of young justice had the gargoyles magical talismans in it 😁 the castle is pronounced "wiv-urn"
Oh yeah. The Phoenix Gate and I think the Magus's book is also in that room.
This video smells like Moroccan tea and 5 pm on a school day , your channel opened my eyes to how similar our generation's childhood is all over the world
Just realized it when you were talking about their character traits, They're literally the Ninja Turtles. Goliath = Leonardo (leader); Brooklyn = Raphael (2nd in command, temper mental); Broadway = Michelangelo (goofy/comedic relief); Lexington = Donatello (tech nerd); Hudson = Splinter (group mentor); Detective Maza = April
No.. they hardly have any similarities, you are reaching
"Pay a man enough, and he'll walk barefoot through hell."
This is one of the most hardcore lines ever written, and it was said by Xanatos. This show was truly amazing.
