- DEVACURL..WHAT HAPPENED? In this video, I am speaking out about the DevaCurl scandal and backlash that Devacurl has been facing in light of allegations that the use of these products is causing hair loss, hair and scalp damage, and other trauma.
Can Devacurl be held accountable? There are many variables to consider that can be causing these issues, and with the knowledge I've learned through my professional experience with hair and from researching scientific journals, my goal with this video is to discuss the facts around proper hair care.
I think its most important that I speak out and raise awareness on this topic because although I am not a hardcore deva cultist and have only talked about a couple of their products on my channel, unfortunately, there are millions of users of this and many of them are being hurt right now. I empathize with those struggling with their hair, and as your "manetor", I promise to help by sharing entertaining education to teach you everything you need to know to nurse your hair and scalp back to good health.

Hi Mell, I’m an actual scientist 👩🔬 and I’ve been looking into the whole devacurl thing since December. I agree with most of what you said but I believe the bald spots that people are experiencing may be due to the inflammation of the scalp. Chronic scalp inflammation can indeed cause follicular malfunction thus producing hair loss (I swear I checked the scientific literature) Actually hair loss caused by chronic follicular inflammation can be irreversible because the immune cells kill the hair stem cells. My hypothesis,as a biomedical researcher, is that people are developing sensitivity to either the ingredients or a contaminant in the products which is causing an inflammatory response in the scalp, which in turn is causing the rashes, pain and hair loss. As for the change in hair texture I believe you are probably correct. The thing is that the only way to corroborate these hypotheses is by doing extensive testing including allergen tests and skin biopsies on the victims, and mass spectrometry + gas chromatography on the suspect products at least.

The inflammatory response is likely to come from sensitivity to fragrance. It is so commonly irritating that it is the most likely cause for most people. If you're leaving a heavily fragranced product sitting on your scalp, of course you're likely to have chronic irritation and inflammation.
I did experience hair loss (overall thinning no bald patches) and I do have regrowth coming back in. I sincerely hope it’s not irreversible damage for the victims that did lose hair in clumps
000snow000 yes the fragrance may be the culprit but I also believe that there may be a contaminant. Maybe there was an issue in the synthesis of one of the ingredients, that’s why I think it would be important to analyze the formula just to make sure that it is exactly what it says in the bottle. However, my personal hypothesis is that the hypersensitivity is to either the fragrance or the preservative.
I used the deva curl products in question (I got a sampler try them before I bought the full size). After one use my scalp was on fire and so itchy. I stopped using it after that.

I get that correlation =/= causation, and that not everyone's hair is going to react the same to every product, and our bodies change... But what could explain the fact that thousands of people who used these products exclusively all have the same negative reaction, all at the same time? Children, teens, postmenopausal women, postpartum, 20-somethings. I just don't understand.
My hairdresser said I have chemical damage. Literally the only products I've used since 2014 were Deva. Honestly, that's all the evidence I need to cancel them.
Sorry to hear about your experience with Deva curl I personally have never used any of there products it was just to expensive for me . Anyway I'm sure something shady definitely happened like maybe a bad batch went out or like any product it starts to go bad at some point and people are holding on to there products too long I know personally I have so many different brands of curly hair products like I do different gels , leave ins, treatments and shampoo and conditioner's I went through and cleaned out the bathroom cabinet and I had products from 2 years ago I know deva curl says they never expire but I don't believe that. I took home my aunts deva curl no poo bottle to try it because I refused to buy it without trying it ,it was half a bottle and she said she had it for a long time and when I took it home I checked it no expiration date but it smelled really bad I literally refused to put it in my hair because how bad it smelled and you can see the breakdown of ingredients so I refuse to believe it doesn't expire anyway what I was getting at is I believe some ppl really are having these problems but I also believe there a good amount of ppl jumping on the bandwagon because there going to possibly be a class action lawsuit and there trying to get in on it hell I could hold on to my aunts no poo say its mine say it cause the balding and thinning in my hair that I have even tho I know its dude too a new medication and no one would challenge my claim because I have curly hair and I have a bottle I'll just say I threw the rest away how do they know if I'm lying or not shoot I'm trying to hop on that bandwagon! So I don't believe thousands of people are having the same problem at the same time I think there some really victims out there but there's also alot of unintentional self inflicted damage that they just happened to be using deva curl and that's so much easier to blame them give it a few months to a year and it will be another hair care product 🤷♀️ again ppl need to talk to there Dr. First rule out if it's from a new medication , Anemic, low vitamin D , thyroid, weight loss, I know keto diet causes hair loss, weight gain ect. Like mel said. Again I think maybe a bad batch had went out and there where some ppl who where effected by it but I think most of the people are hoping on the bandwagon!
@@valeriecorona5930 I've personally been to doctors about the migraines I suffered and we linked it to Deva. I also ordered products directly from Deva in May 2019 and they had all been used up by December. Products usually have a longer shelf life than 7 months. I am very confident that Deva is the problem.

Stephanie Midolo Stephanie Mero has a viable theory. Deva started using a company called Dot Com Distributors. Maybe they use cheap plastic that leaches chemicals into the products and then into the hair, causing the damage. Deva’s recent statement on IG and their robotic replies are offensive. They’re gaslighting customers, acting like everything is ok. It’s just wrong.

I’ve been a hairdresser for 18 years and THANK YOU Mel for your channel. I’ve been yelling about ‘no poo’ long before diva curl and cgm was a thing . Scalps are not self cleansing. Wash your hair people.

I did cleanse my scalp with a regular shampoo. I didn't use a Deva shampoo or no poo. So why is my hair like this then. Why is my hair and scalp destroyed. I have dandruff and scabs after only using the product's for a month. The shampoo I had used way before Deva. Check out the facebook group and actually educate yourself on what many women are experiencing. Look at the pictures woman are posting

Funny how I could use the same shampoo before using DevaCurl and have no issues. I only started having these problems after using DevaCurl. I ordered a travel kit size of the stylers and hair mask/conditioner. I used them for 1 month with the same shampoo. Now I did cut my hair shorter in November and thought maybe there is some sort of issue with that. Well I've had my hair shorter with the same shampoo. No issues there either. So all the hair on my head was fresh now and without any damaged. I I haven't dyed my hair in 2 years and only got bleach in it for highlights once. That was many years ago. Washing with the Deva products the first time was alright. No irritants to be found. My curls looked kind of fried but I thought it could be just not styled right. Wash 2 and 3 were making my scalp start to itch but I though it was just the dry air. Wash 4 and 5 were really when things started to get bad. I found what I thought was a scap but had my boyfriend look at my scalp with me. I gave it 1 more try thinking I was doing something wrong. My scalp was so inflamed I had to wash the products out after an hour. It looked like my scalp was a little chemical burned. I always patch test products after my sister and I actually got a chemical burn from clay hair remover. So I actually put this product on my skin under a band aid and didn't notice any problems. Later on after using the DevaCurl products my skin would get irritated from them. I thought yeah it's the perfume but there is definitely something else wrong too. Perfume doesn't change your curl pattern. Please check out the Facebook group. Look at the pictures. Some woman are having way more severe problems than me.
I only shampoo my hair once a week and I’ve been using devacurl for a few years now and their Original line is the shampoo and conditioner I used for YEARS with no problems and last summer when I picked up new bottles and used them my scalp was so dry that it had yellow flakes which has never happened to me before and my hair went from a 3b to a 2b (on a good day) and I kept using it cause I thought it was just me since I had used them for years and never had issues. My hair thinned out so much and my hair lost its pattern so I stopped using them in December and my scalp started getting better using other stuff and I went back to devacurl once in January just to test it and the same day I did my scalp was SO ITCHY and flaky. I just found out everyone was having problems with devacurl a few weeks ago and I literally was like “Wow so I’m not crazy it wasn’t just me”
Kaitlin Belle Rose I feeeel you! I thought It is me so I continue using it.. My hair become soooooo bad, scalp itchy sooo much that sometimes on few spots it was bloody! Like little spots. Overall bad experience!!

This was me too!! I was using it to wash and condition...my hair really like it, so I thought. As time went on my curls looked frizzy, dull and less defined. I thought I was balding because my hair line seemed to be receding. Anyways, I got my hair straightened about 6 months apart and my hair was literally half as thick the second time around.
Thyroid came back fine. I had NO CLUE about this until about 2wks ago when was watching a M.A.D. Curls live stream and they started talking about it...I had an ah-hah moment and realized this must have been the cause. I went as far as having my thyroid checked because it just didn't make any sense.
I ended up chopping my hair and thank God I fell back into being a product junkie and happened to stop using Deva Curl cause now my curls are starting to look normal again, is feeling thicker and my hairline is growing back in. I am still cowashing the same way though.
Kaitlin Belle Rose Yellow flakes sounds like seborrheic dermatitis. I have that condition and when I flare up I get those. I think maybe your scalp put up with years of Devacurl crap (because I’m sorry, but DC has always had questionable formulations) and finally flared up. Sensitization reactions can take months or even years to sometimes manifest.
Ditto. Started using DC last winter and stopped in January and my curls are a 2b/c on their best day now vs 3b/c they were before.
I used Deva products for at least 15 years with consistently good results. Around 2017, the company was sold and shortly thereafter there was a noticeable change in the quality of the products. I didn’t experience an increase in hair loss but I did notice that my hair wasn’t looking great and wasn’t as easy to style. I was already looking for alternatives when I heard about the “scandal”.
Dermatologists have talked about this "clean beauty" trend and demonization of parabens, which have a much longer and well studied use history, leading to companies actually using preservatives that are more like to cause irritation.

I just feel bad for people like Spisha because her hair was such a big part of her life. She did everything right. If I remember correctly, I think she developed something on her scalp. I just need Deva Curl to answer people like her. Join together with their customers and figure out what's going on.

@@crayton2004 One of their own employees, stylists?, (gotta find the dudes name) is literally on video claiming this is nothing but a big witch hunt by influencers that Deva Curl cut ties with. No apologies, no retractions. That's the moment I decided they no longer get the benefit of the doubt. I believe some problems can be explained by protein overload and buildup, but some people are experiencing severe medical issues. Something is WRONG.
As far as the buildup is concerned isn't that what the whole cgm was about? Avoiding silicones because they cause buildup? Now they have people blaming customers for not clarifying. This has got to be some kind of sick joke.
Smh. So sad for all involved. I know what they are going through. Its devastating for a female to wake up and half of her hair is gone. Mine will probably never be the same. I will probably never be able to wear my hair down again, as the only way to cover the bald and thinning spots is with a ponytail.

Denise Shannon I used Deva Curl that I have left today to see if I have any issues because I was avoiding it because of the backlash and my hair still feels ok.But I still like to use other brands that might define more. I would like to know which line of the products did they use? I was using the Decadence one.Is the other part of the line causing issues too or which products specifically?
We demonize parabens, but they tend to be some of the least irritating preservatives used in cosmetics. I don’t have a moral judgement on them one way or the other, but I wonder if we’re seeing more irritation from products now because companies are using more irritating preservatives in hopes that a “paraben-free” label will sell more.

I'm also mystified at the DevaCurl issues. I started using DevaCurl right before this whole scandal, it caused a ton of hair loss, build up, and breakage. I'm talking like whole chunks falling out. Full blown bald-spots. As soon as I quit it the hair loss stopped being an issue.

The heat argument was not that using heat on your hair caused problems, it's that the products were exposed to heat either during storage or during shipping.
That's been debunked by several people so far, and I tend to agree with them. Check out Kenna, shes a scientist on UA-cam, who also has her own product line. My hair loss is terrible and has been happening for the last 2 years with Deva Curl. I think something else is up with these products.

@Crucibelle how could you possibly think that someone would PURPOSEFULLY continue to use a product that causes them pain? There's so many other factors that could have caused it. My daughter bought deva curl at my suggestion. Within a short time, he curl pattern is almost nonexistent. Her hair is straight, I didn't experience any issues. But have since stopped using the brand.

I found your videos about 2 or so weeks ago. I’ve since cut 5-8 inches off and thrown out A LOT of products, my hair has never felt or looked better. I’m a receptionist in a salon that predominantly deals with non textured hair, the difference in a stylist who is comfortable and celebrates texture and curls and one who is not is night and day. So for all of the people who don’t appreciate you and all the free advice and entertainment you give thank you. I don’t know what my hair journey would look like without you and your seester.
I think both the curly girl method AND DevaCurl products are to blame. Everything you explained about buildup and such causing damage to hair definitely makes sense, but it also seems that DevaCurl problems suddenly appeared--or at least, flew into high gear in 2019.
Ayesha Malik used the stuff for yeeeeeaaaaaars and never had a problem until about 2019. Not only did she use their Buildup Buster regularly to prevent that sort of problem, but when she realized DevaCurl might be the problem (her curls were gone, her hair was falling out, her scalp was itchy and irritated, she has chronic headaches, and her new hair is even growing out gray and wirey) she quit for a while...her hair got a little better...and then she used DevaCurl one last time while on a trip when she didn't have her alternative products, and BAM her hair was awful again.
I think that when the company was sold, the formula was changed. People have also been saying that their products smell different than before, and they even feel different on the hair when using them in the shower than they used to. Something is definitely up with that company.

Ziaberry That build up buster has ingredients in it known to cause buildup, so that wouldn’t do much in terms of clarifying. In fact, all Devacurl products have ingredients with high build up potential that, over time, can cause damage and irritation.
This experience was the beginning of me taking care of my hair. My first and only purchase Build Up Buster felt slimy and my hair didn’t feel clean at all. I had nothing to compare it to. I quickly switched to using Suave Clarifying shampoo. I also saw my doctor and had bloodwork done just to be sure. All levels were in normal range. The problem may lie with a distributor. I don’t know. I do know that dc ignored us (about 4000) and our concerns up and until Ayesha’s video came out. For that I will never trust them again.
I have been doing the curly girl method for five years. I have only used Diva Curl once several years ago. I had a short transition period with my scalp when I started the CGM. My hair is thick and healthy and I have zero scalp issues. Before we had all these products people went very long periods of time without washing,if this causes these issues we would know already.
gosnell62jg Before I was natural I didn’t wash that much but with scalp psoriasis I would wash more.But I use diffrent brands for my hair to see which ones work best.
Just sharing my experience.... I have been following CGM since 2 years now, I don't use all of the devacurl products but I keep using their one or the other product in a regular basis... I have been suffering from itchy scalp and hair loss(not too extreme but alot than i used to have before i followed CGM), but I thought that was just my problem and will eventually be better.... But when I heard about the devacurl scandal, without blindly believing what all others are sharing,,, I decided to continue trying CGM without any devacurl product since this feb 1st, and even I can't believe my hairfall and itchy scalp problem has decreased to almost more than 80%.
It might be helpful to see which ingredients are different in your Devacurl product vs the one's you currently use. You may have developed a sensitivity to something, in which case you should see a dermatologist or allergist for some testing so you can avoid any irritating ingredients in the future.

My scalp no longer itches ever since I stopped using DC back in January. Never experienced itchy scalp with any hair products. I also had a ton of shedding too, now that drastically decreased as well.
I’m in the exact same boat. Been CGM for 1.5 years, pulling chunks of hair out in the shower (way more than what’s healthy) but I don’t see any balding or thinning. I recently stopped CGM and now I’m barely losing any hair. I think it was just excessive buildup that clarifying shampoos couldn’t remove

I actually gasped when I heard you mention malassezia! It's something I and many others struggle with not only on the hair but skin as well, and not something many people know about.

Azelaic acid helped clear my face fungal acne (caused by malessezia) btw. I've sworn off fermented ingredients since because that's what trigerred it for my face.
@@MShaiqable Oh yes I love azelaic acid, it's helped me a lot too. Didn't know fermented foods could be a trigger, I feel like if anything the probiotics in them would be helpful? I'm curious about how you found out, I guess. I've mostly been learning about fungal acne and how to treat it through the simpleskincarescience blog.
As someone with an immune disorder that gives me non-anaphylactic food allergies but with the sensitivity of someone who is, say, deathly allergic to peanuts, I have learned a lot about how the presence of an individual ingredient and its potential effects on the user is independent from overall trait of the substance the ingredient is in (for instance: hydrolyzed wheat protein is in tons of hair gels and is perfectly safe for use, but the ingredient will still make me very sick). pH is EXTREMELY important for hair care, but I also don't think finding a good pH range in a potentially-problematic product is the end of the line of investigation.
Agreed. I had my hair fall out from a hair product two years ago. I have an immune disease, so am probably more sensitive, but I had problems similar to what people who are having issues with the devacurl products are experiencing. My hair has changed forever as it was really straight and is now wavy. It took a long time to nurse it back to an acceptable form of health and I’m still not there yet. Due to the waves it will take much longer for it to grow back as long as it was. I know how devastating it is to have these hair issues and it will take years to fix them, I really feel for everyone who’s going through this. To me it looks like some women have a fungal infection, which can cause a lot of damage and allergic reactions, which could explain the difference in intensity. As you can have an infection and you can have that infection and be (severely) allergic to the fungi from that infection on top. I’m not a doctor, but I hope someone will figure it out, so everyone can start to heal.
I read the ingredients for DC’s no poo conditioner. It contains hops. Would that be considered bad for someone who has a wheat allergy?
@@reikun86 hops is neither a wheat nor a plant that contains gluten. It wouldn't give someone with wheat allergies, or gluten sensitivity, issues.
Btw, it sounds like you were mixing up wheat allergy with issues with gluten. Wheat allergy can have cross-reactions, but people with celiac are reacting to the gluten protein, not a specific plant, so yes people with celiac don't just react to wheat.
My theory is that the previous company that bought Devacurl in May 2017 was there to increase profit margins as much as possible before selling the company for more than what they paid for it. Keep in mind Devacurl was sold around Nov of 2019 again. So in order to make the books look good for potential buyers they opted for cheaper ingredients not as high in quality and cheaper packaging but kept the price point obviously for gain. It should be noted this practice is super common and would only become a problem if maybe a cheaper ingredient isn’t pure and was causing problems. Of course consumers would not really be able to tell because no amount of at home testing would be able to determine the product purity or quality of ingredients.

You'd think with such a large product line that people exclusively using devacurl could still tackle different hair concerns (clarifying, deep conditioning, protein treatments, oil treatments, etc)...and it seems like most people using devacurl spread out wash days (washing 1-2 times a week) so I'm hesitant to believe it's hygral fatigue either. I initially thought it must be buildup, but many people have refuted this theory, saying that they make sure to clarify every 1-2 weeks. I'm inclined to believe it's a problem higher up the supply chain/manufacturing process. Whatever the issue is, we're not going to figure it out using homemade pH kits (no shade, this vid explored many viable options and was very informative!) Other tests like spectral analyses need to be conducted on each ingredient by an independent testing facility before we're ever going to learn the cause of the curlpocalypse
Based on my completely unscientific third-hand information from reading accounts and watching videos, I'm inclined to agree. I've noticed a trend of people, both CG and non-, saying they used Deva products, noticed problems, and then changed to other products (but not changing methods!) and noticing improvements or at least the absence of those problems. Obviously not everyone has mentioned all these things, and obviously this is all anecdotal, and obviously rigorous testing needs to be done, like you said, but I am an engineer and my job is to notice patterns and minute details (I do component soldering repair on LED and lighting fixtures, so sometimes near-microscopic stuff and really finicky, temperamental processes) and it's making my Spidey Sense tingle. Just like Mell said at the beginning, I don't think ALL these people's experiences can be discounted entirely as all having the same problem with method. Something is fishy and it's not cool at all.
My only question to the folks that claim that it's not buildup, not hygral fatigue... are they using Deva Curl cleansers, such as "Buildup Buster" for their clarifying?
They might be clarifying with more of the same chemicals, emollients and preservatives that are causing their issues.

I had the negative side effects with devacurl. I tried the buildup buster ONCE and it made my hair feel disgusting and unclean. It took forever to sort of feel back to normal, but never 100% I suppose because I still used other Devacurl products. I clarify regularly at least once a week with sulfate based products. I also now use, since December 2019, a soft scalp brush to massage my head. Devacurl gave me itchy and burning scalp, acne on my head, hair loss, and my hair looks like I relaxed it; it looked dull and frizzy. I'm so glad I spent hundreds to look like 💩😐😑

Personally, I did experience hair loss with Devacurl. I thought it was just because I was starting my natural hair journey, but then I switched products. Within the first couple of weeks, I noticed a massive difference in my hair. It was healthier. I’m very lucky that I didn’t lose my texture or a lot of hair
I personally stopped using their products because my hair pattern was changing. I mainly used their stylers but decided to try one of their shampoos the low poo to be specific and their conditioner my hair started acting up and I didn’t know what it was until I came to the conclusion that those products were very high on protein and I was experiencing protein overload, which was making my hair dry brittle and it would not retain any moisture. I loved the stylers but I stopped using them all together, I switched to other products, got a haircut and my hair quickly improved. (Fyi I never followed the no poo method bc my hair is fine).

Tomibel Polanco I use shea moisture anti breakage yucca shampoo and not your mother’s charcoal conditioner. For stylers, I use not your mother’s curl talk creme and gel and sometimes I use the Aussie freeze it gel but very little of it bc it has a very strong hold. Make sure to clarify at least once a month with sulfate shampoo and follow up with a deep conditioner so your hair won’t feel so dry.
irie7iv hey girl! What I did was try to avoid products that are heavy on protein so always read the labels. I started deep conditioning with not your mother’s matcha green tea and apple blossom mask ( it does mot have any protein) this will help with moisture you need moisture in your hair to balance out the protein.

I don't think the statement about "no expiration date" was referring to the products but rather to the credits issued when returning products. Surely there is a point the products expire.
Yes, I noticed this faux pas as well. They were talking about the merchandise credits, not the products themselves.
I once bought a Devacurl product off of Amazon, and it came with an expiration date on the packaging, but anything I've ordered directly from Devacurl had no expiration date on it. I've never worked in the cosmetics industry, but I have worked with chemicals for many years, and most products have a shelf life, but companies are not required by the government to label them with an expiration date (unless they're being ingested by consumers). The QA (quality assurance) departments I've worked in had us continually test the products, with samples from each batch, for different things: pH, color, and smell for example, and also shelf life under different conditions (for example, simulating a hot warehouse environment where the products may be shelved for long periods of time). I have a hard time believing that Devacurl's QA department would let things like that slip. If the products have changed ingredients, like many consumers claim, their QA department would be on top of this, specifically watching for different reactions in the new products as they are being tested. But it could be that the company hires a lab on contract to do these kinds of tests on their products, and whoever they've hired could be getting lax in their testing. I would think they are a big enough company to have their own QA labs to test their many products, but I could be wrong.

It's logical that heat (humidity) raises the cuticle making the hair swell and frizz, so what can reverse that? Cold air. It's also logical that scientists and trichologists knew this theory as well, but just sold the dream that it works the same way with a liquid (hot and cold water) as it does with a gas (hot and cold air) which is sadly incorrect. 😴👎😞

When I started going through Mel’s curly tutorials I kept rewinding until I broke down and started taking notes.
Honestly I'm not doubting that some devacurl products have some serious issues and could be leading to damage, but I feel like a lot of the damage could be attributed to the curly girl method as well.
I didn't use any devacurl products and had the same issues that all of these devapeeps are experiencing. When I switched back to silicones and sulfates (and completely removed coconut oil) my curls started to come back and the hair loss stopped. It's even getting less dry.
Unfortunately when I would bring up the issues I was having in CGM groups I would be told that I was lying or "that's just how you know it's working". Nobody was willing to believe that CGM and coconut oil may not be right for everyone.

It's a relief to hear someone else say that. I've been using silicones and sulfates all my life, without any hair damage. I started to get paranoid because of all that "you're gonna go bald if you keep using them" talk. My hair is still healthy and fine and curls are still here 👌🏼
I am a bit iffy on silicones still because it doesn't allow my hair to breathe but like you said, the CGM is not a one-size-fits-all. I'm really shocked you were accused of lying for simply saying what works for you.
@@dosman3458 i use water soluble silicones and do a once a month clarifying wash since one of my products has shea butter and so far I don't have any problems with buildup. But routines are really personal so I'm sure that there are plenty of great silicone free routines out there for people!
I’ve only just started my natural hair transition and I’m so overwhelmed with all this info. You think your doing the right thing then NOPE CANT DO THAT. It’s so stressful it’s like I spend this money on one thing but I actually have to do something else or buy even more things. Coconut oil can be good when you are transitioning or when your hair has high porosity. I've been in my curly hair journey for more than a year now and my hair is now rejecting coconut oil. Hair changes. 🤷
Oh my. I feel you. I just passed my year 1 of the journey and I understand perfectly. If I can give you some piece of advice is to try everything that makes sense to you. Literally experiment what your hair likes weather it's silicones or oils or whatever your hair likes. I promise you will find your perfect routine but it takes time so enjoy the ride, see how your hair changes and adapts to this new life cause it's SOOOOOO WORTH IT! I promise it's worth every experiment, I finally found my routine and my curls are the best ever.

Arling Pastor I’ve been on my “curly hair journey” for maybe three years now. I started off with coconut oil and just using a crap ton of conditioner to style my hair. It didn’t look great but it didn’t look bad either so I thought I was getting it right. Then I did some more research and watched a ton of videos and found that there really is no right way to go about things. Everyone does something different. I follow the curly girl method very leniently. I try to keep all silicones, sulfates, parabens, out of my routine. But I still experiment and try to find things that my hair enjoys. It’s an on going process. I have some go to products that I use, but I don’t rely on them consistently. Just try to find what works for you. Test the different methods and products. And don’t feel defeated when things aren’t perfect. You’ll find something that works some days and other days it doesn’t. But if I’ve learned anything from this devacurl scandal, you cannot rely on a product to show the same results all the time. That’s a miracle product and if that existed, there would definitely be a monopoly in the industry, which there is not. Anyway, keep at it, it’ll all work out for you eventually. Don’t lose hope and good luck!

during puberty a year ago my hair turned curly, deva curl was the first thing i used. i've noticed my hair starting to fall out, my curl pattern has been destroyed, and my head was always itchy. i got a new serum that defines curls and makes your hair not frizzy. and after only a couple of days my hair has HUGE improvements. do NOT use devacurl

Haha, yes. Same thing I wanted to correct. I'd also like to point out that the main preservative, phenoxyethanol, is known to be not very effective against yeast and mold. I received two different shipments of products, one from an online retailer, and one as a replacement directly from DevaCurl, that smelled strongly of mildew. This was before any of this public outcry, but it immediately made me think that they were having distribution or storage issues where products were sitting around and the preservatives were no longer effective to keep the products safe for use.
Deva Curl is now part of one of the largest houselhold product groups in the world, well known for using very cheap chemicals in their products as standard practice. The ingredients didn't change but the *grade of the ingredients* might have. On top of that, as someone who is white but has been using heavy products for type 4 hair exclusively for a very long time, including a co-wash, butters etc, my hair has healed and has never felt better, my scalp is not suffering dryness like it used to, and my hair loss has stopped. 0% inflammation. But I have never, ever, ever put Deva Curl on my head because I do not trust large corporations. That includes other brands, such as Shea Moisture, which we won't purchase again - especially now that the CEO stepped down.

As for products I use As I Am cowash and the SM purple conditioner (my daughter's), SM BCO shampoo occasionally for cleansing with the Manuka deep treatment mask, As I Am double butter after every wash and this really nice Boucleme gel that seems to disappear in my hair without a trace.
Man I love you so much. People who are not professionals, but who consider themselves experts in their fields bother me so much. You can only learn so much on your own, no matter how nerdy you are. And so I really appreciate it when dermatologists or actual hair care specialists like you speak out on these issues because you provide us with knowledge we may not even have access too (or at least easy access too).
A few months after starting with Devacurl my hair started falling out like mad. I have a lot of hair... it'd be all over the bathroom floor after washing / styling it. I sort of chalked it up to... something... getting older, whatever. When I heard about this scandal I stopped using it, and guess what! My hair stopped falling out after a few weeks. I have about half as much hair as I used to, but it's coming back. (Still looks thick tho.)

I was under the pretense that Sulfates were damaging my hair and yet the dermatologists came out too late (in my experience) to tell me why that was a BAD idea. I need some good recommendations on how to deal with the damage now. I think I could undo it. Sigh 😑

I ALWAYS use sulfate shampoo. Of course it dries my hair out but that's why I load my hair with nourishing conditioners and leave ins afterwards. Never understood no-poo and co-washing.
I normally use shampoo with no sulfates one wash day and then the next wash one with sulfates to remove build up and that seems to work for me

I DO NOT follow the curly girl method and never have. I used deva curl back in September of 2019 just 5 times and when I tell you my scalp was itching so bad, I am not exaggerating at all. The burning sensation and the hair loss in just a few days of using it was INSANE. I thought maybe I was the only one with a bad reaction to deva curl products. I’m so glad I only used a few times. But I do still suffer from acne on my scalp. I honestly cannot imagine what other women are going through when it comes to the annoyance of scratching your head a million times in one day.
Mell - if there's no expiration date, what are the odds that they've sent out a batch that has gone bad from sitting too long in the warehouse? I would believe it isn't the product if all the damage wasn't recent. You don't see anything about anyone having these experiences 3,4,5 years ago. Everything seems to be from within the last 2 years, which is around the time the company changed hands, and within that time got new packaging.

When you have been to the doctor when you have had the blood tests when you have eliminated the medical causation....and the only thing left is the product you have committed to....the cause is clear. While the specific scientific cause has not yet been identified, the product used is the only suspect left. Time will tell, hopefully, what the scientific cause really is. In the meantime, Deva has a responsibility to handle. Will they? So far, it isn't looking so good. One single example: They have erased many customers' order history.

I have always used the curl gels- And (because I'm a hoarder), I still have an old bottle before the ingredients changed. I compared the two and can see the only change is the Phenoxyethanol!! I have recently also been getting eczema for the first time in my life and I noticed every time I used a certain deodorant (Nivea double effect) I started to itch like crazy but could never figure out why! After watching this (THANK YOU!!) I checked the ingredients on the deoderant and my body moisturizer (Sukin) and Phenoxyethanol was in everything!! After researching I discovered that this ingredient (is a carcinogenic- cancer causing) and also will encourage dermatitis and other skin conditions that you may not have had ever before. This explains everything!! Check your products for this ingredient. Sukin skincare is a huge culprit pretending like they're for "sensitive skin" and claim to be free of all these terrible ingredients when they have one of the worst ones.
So glad I found you. I dont have the curls you do, but your confidence, your voice, and the fact that you are a professional gives me comfort.
from what i've heard, it's not the formula, but (or at least this is the theory) the way the product was stored. A lot of people think the products were stored in a warehouse that was not quality controlled and that it caused a reaction within the product that make it unsafe. I didn't experience anything with the products, but my sister who lives a few states away from me did, and since the places we purchased from were likely different, it's possible her products were affected and mine weren't
I mean....I'm only half way through, and all, but we did learn from Scientify Mel that over moisturized hair DOES do a lot of what the problem is:loss if curl, frizz, etc.
The hair changes could very well be from too much protein or over moisturizing. But what will explain the scalp issues ?

It's possible that their ingredients suppliers are adding filler to the ingredients and DevaCurl has no idea.
I haven't used DevaCurl products BUT I've religiously used the SheaMoisture coconut and hibiscus shampoo and conditioner for my hair for about 2 years now and recently noticed some things you mentioned, like my hair feeling super dry when soaking wet, it being extremely frizzy, etc. I guess the moral of the story is to pay attention when your hair is changing and to never make excuses for products that dont work for you anymore 🤷♀️
Not really satisfied with this video... a lot of testimonies were people who had no problems for years and it started all of the sudden, or people who tried it a few times and it made their hair feel horrible, along with people around them who did the same. The only real investigation you seem to have shown us is the alkaline level, but I would've liked to see maybe investigation into possible changes in formula, change of ownership of the company, cross-analyzing different anecdotes, I dont know. While I understand you dont want to join into mob-mentality for blaming the brand when theres no real evidence and look at it objectively, and at the end of the video you say there *might* be something wrong with the product, the entire video is just possible explanations for common symptoms and comes across as trying to invalidate really serious rumors. I dont think it's fair to tell the sheer amount people all with different hair, routines, stories, backgrounds, and hair care knowledge that the common issue theyre facing is because of build-up or something external.

Good points but this was a 30min video of all she could cram in there. If you want a full documentary series I’d suggest going to an actual researcher. This video was on her spare time. She covered a lot of fields and multiple times insured she wasn’t blowing past the testimonies of all these people. 🤷🏻♀️ what more can you want from a yt video?

I think she just wants to address the more minor cases versus the serious one but it’s always good to learn from both sides of stories she did say she was playing the devils advocate in the beginning, I think any information is useful for the devacurl case especially if questions come up such as these where others ask have you considered blank blank and blank to be the issue and after watching this I can for sure say, yeah I have considered it and I still think DevaCurl is an issue because blank. All information is useful! 😁

Definitely. I called out phenoxyethanol as a culprit to the damage in the Facebook group as it's in all 6 of my DevaCurl products and many commented saying theirs didn't contain it. But the ones who didn't see it purchased their products long before I did.
When was the company sold? I bought a foam and wavemaker Nov 2018. I still had the foam and threw it away. Ive never had an issue with dandruff but had it all last year

I have never used the cgm. I used Diva Curl styling products (never their cleansers or conditioners) for less than a month and it ruined my curl pattern and loosened my curls. I also now have wet frizz and my hair is much drier (even after cutting off about 3 inches). While using the products I did experience a higher amount of shedding and some scalp sensitivity. I just thought the products didn’t work for my hair type and expected it to return to normal after discontinuing use for a couple of weeks...that didn’t happen. My curls are still not as tight as they should be and my pattern has not returned to normal. I’m hoping as it grows out it will start to go back to normal.
OMG, a curly girl scientist! Thank you for the information. This actually happened to with WEN a few years ago but only with once product. I started using regular shampoo and conditioner and my hair started looking better. It seems like I had serious build-up so now I know better with any product but you gave me even more important information!

This video helped me figure out what was wrong with my hair regiment! I’ve only been using DevaCurl products w/the Curly Girl Method since December. My hair was GREAT, until this last month. It started getting frizzy, my scalp started itching, I developed BAD dandruff, I had a lot of hair fallout, my curls started getting crunchy, I lost my shine and the curls I had were becoming stringy!
I was so upset I started watching as many UA-cam vids I could. Watching this vid triggered an AHA! moment for me when you started talking about protein. After watching this vid I watched your protein vs moisture vid as well as you and your sisters fav amazon purchases. I took the dive, bought the Undo Goo by Malibu C, cleansed my hair twice and omg I got my curls back! I hadn’t been cleansing my hair and I just had a protein overload w/all the products I’d been using. I’ve only been doing No Poo for so long my hair needed a cleanse. It felt like a pound of weight was lifted after my first wash. I could feel my curls bouncing after that wash for the first time in weeks.
Idk if that’s even what some of the other curlies out there have been experiencing. But I am DEF not a believer in the Curly Girl Method at least. All my DevaCurl products work fabulously. I still love all of them personally. I just need to shampoo and cleanse more now ☺️

Mel, can you please do a video on “Flash Drying”? This has been a recent problem for me with a lot of my products. I think if a product has aloe vera it is causing the “Flash Drying”, but I am not positive. Thank you for your videos!
I saw another video with a dermatologist where she spoke that a lot of people that use Deva Curl also follow the CG method, which involves not cleansing scalp properly. Not cleaning your scalp can lead to clogged follicles that lead to hair loss/thinning. SO please wash your scalp!! Even if you use a clarifying shampoo once a month or use a scalp scrub along with your shampoo.

thank you for making this video! as a science gal, i love to see science used to investigate things like beauty, hair etc. i’m so glad I didn’t have hair loss, but the dandruff/scalp itch and frizz was a big issue. I always cleansed my hair when i noticed extra build up with a light sulfate shampoo (TJ tea tree shampoo) or apple cider vinegar rinse. My hair is healing now!

I personally returned a $100 of DC products right after trying them back in April 2019 as I felt they are straighten my hair! I have only the foam as I ordered it from their website and they did not take it back!

The quote you read from the devacurl website says that merchandise credits don't expire, it says nothing about the actual product. Basically every cosmetic has an "expiration date" that can be found on the bottom of the bottle, such as "12M" meaning that the product should be discarded 12 months after opening. The chemicals in these products degrade over time, especially when stored in the bathroom with temperature and moisture fluctuations.
Hi Mell - Thank you for taking the time to educate! To be honest, I almost didn’t watch this because I’m sick of hearing about the Deva Curl problem. But it’s a Manes by Mell video and there is ALWAYS something to learn. And true to form, regardless of the product I use or even whether I have straight or curly hair, this video is chock-full of GREAT information for everyone. Thanks for sharing about build up, hair structure, hair damage, fuh (pH), ingredients, and the “fragrance” issue. I so appreciate the meat of your videos and this one is really one of the best!
Well said, Mell. My hair at the moment is fine. Like you, I don’t use DevaCurl religiously. I use only the products that I like... but I alternate them with other products. I think alternating what you use is incredibly helpful. I make sure to clarify my hair every so often and not wash my hair everyday.

I got shamed by a lot of cgm users for using a sulfate shampoo monthly to help with build up... thank goodness I did.

The only thing that I know is that if I use their ultradefining gel my hair gets incredibly dry. If I don’t use it my hair is super soft. Why? I have no idea! I wish their products were good for me, but they’re not 🤷🏽♀️
I think this video is very important. I have had a lot of hair loss and breakage since starting my curly journey, which was when I started using DevaCurl products. None of my blood tests suggested any internal issues, and the dermatologist couldn't even give me an explanation, however I think it is super dangerous to feed into the hype that exploding on the internet and use DC as a scapegoat. There are so many factors that go into, thick, luscious hair and a healthy scalp, and it is essential to research and experiment. I did return/dispose of my DC products, but as more of a precaution as clearly something in my routine was not working for me. I don't want to ignorantly blame a third party for this issue until there is a study that can conclusively pinpoint the issue, instead of theories and testimonies. Blaming DC could just be blanketing the real problem, and could prevent others curlies (and myself) from finding the real culprit and finally healing.
An idea for a video! (Like you need more of those) Is maybe how to troubleshoot issues in our hair? I see a lot of "When your hair is damaged/flat/untextured/unbalanced, do so and so" but some visual examples of what to look and feel for would be great. What does unbalanced hair look and feel like? How do I know if my hair is damaged?

I was starting to notice EXTREME hair loss for about 5 washes, noticed my scalp was very angry and itchy, and I wasn’t a Deva only user. I used two Deva products and I didn’t even use them regularly. I am now using sulfates and silicones and my hair is SO much happier. I was also clarifying every other wash but I’m convinced that just wasn’t enough.
