- This is a Review or a video essay about Mod Nation Racers, A PS3 exclusive made for Sony's Play, Create, Share line of games. This is unironically the best kart racer ever made and is leaps and bounds better than any Mario kart that has ever been made. You can make your own Character, Karts and Tracks, giving you infinite replay ability since if you're ever sick of not having tracks, you can just make more of your own . Unfortunately the online servers for this game doesn't exist anymore so you wont be able to download and new characters, karts or tracks but is absolutely still worth playing for its excellent story mode.

thanks for reviewing the game and kind words. I worked on this game, making most of the story levels and creating the track editor. It is nice to see that it gets some love still as we put a lot of love into it at United Front Games. A little hidden tip, I created a few levels after the game shipped called TankCrazy (massive tank) and DinoCrazy (big dinosaur in the middle), and the EmpireStrikesBack (large AT-AT walker that you raced around)

Thank you so much. This game was my childhood. I bought a ps3 again a couple of years ago specifically to play this game again. I still play it often. There’s nothing like it, creating whacky characters and karts and just having a blast

this game needs a remaster, game of my childhood
the type of shit that some people crated in this game was genuinely incredible. detailed models of anime figures, videogame characters, real life cars etc. i also remember playing with the steamroller from the track builder that someone somehow modded in and made public
also the steamroller could fly and go through some walls and would wreck every online lobby into chaos
Though I still play Mario Kart from time to time, this game is just on a whole new level. I can't believe why nobody hasn't picked this up and ported it for other platforms
It was a Sony exclusive and the studio was hired again to make the Little Big Planet racing game, which was such a disgrace to ModNation

There is no competition in that genre of racing games. It is the best of its kind. You just cant compare to Mario Kart or similiar games. It is both challenging and rewarding and has an infinite place for creativity. Its so underrated and needs a sequel for sure.
I literaly grew up with this game. first time ever i meet people on a video game and casually speak to them. the french community was so so so sweet
I got this in late 2012, and currently have 5000 hours logged. Not a single second was regret.
My sister and I loved this game when we were kids, it would be a shame if the game never gets a good remaster and/or proper sequel for the PS4 and/or PS5.
There’s actually been fan servers that one can connect to via dns that restores the creation download features. Unfortunately the online multiplayer isn’t fully working yet. This game I only got into two years ago or so and I’ve really enjoyed it. Great review!

God I remember playing this game so much in 2014..
this game is so underrated i wish more people played this back in the day, like everything from the soundtrack to the customization is just so well done, you can even neglect the drift mechanic to constantly fill your drift bar
I played SOOO MUCH of this game growing up. Fall 2021/Winter/Spring 2022 I decided to replay this game, getting every item and beating every challenge, and all tokens, and I loved every second of it. On Iceman’s track (don’t remember the names of the courses that well) I had to race several times to get a lap in without hitting the wall, and it took me several tries to beat Iceman’s challenge, but that course handles so well that it’s incredibly satisfying running lap after lap trying to get it. Plus, with how fun the drifting and handling are in this game, when I go back to Mario Kart I wish I was playing ModNation Racers. This game is awesome.
I remember when people made thse broken karts, which could make you fly and you could just glitch out of the modspot by using the broken karts. Never really found out how people made them but I remember using one of the broken karts to fly out of the modspot and i started driving out of bounds.

4:55: "the ai doesn't really do it to you" biggest lie ever. I remember MANY different times the bots have sideswiped me. I love this game, but the bots have caused so much anger that I had to take breaks as a kid.
Yep I definitely ate my words! mid way through. Nato was the worst for it when I made this video.

Also If you have an item in race you can uses it as a mine by pressing the "Square"
There are three of them:
Level 1 (only stay on the track for 1 second)
Level 2 (stay forever on the track until someone hit the mine)
Level 3 (like lvl 2 but has a radius)

This is the best karting game ever made !!! It was a 10/10 ! According to me, there are no other racing games which can compete against it. You have everyting in this game. I spent so much time and made tons of videos on it, for sure, it is the racing game of my life! I'll never understand why they didn't make a new one or a remaster, that's so sad. This game misses me so much, unfortunately, shutting down the online servers did kill the game

This is the best creator style game I ever experienced, a very solid kart racer that you can play even if you're not a person who can create super detailed and awesome creations, thanks to its story mode.
In the beginning of the race when he says go and you press nitrous quickly you get the boost you have to time it right. Also i swore their was sweet tooth in this game.

Sweet Tooth was in those Game via DLCs, together with other PlayStation Characters like Sly Cooper or Sackboy

bro this game on next gen would DO NUMBERS. I never like to say a game will do well just because of how a community likes it, but I can see this coming back, bringing back the old community and adding a legion of new players
Mario Kart needs to follow this games footsteps in terms of customization.
I miss this game. Modnation racers was the perfect example of creativity for racing. I wish it was still active. Just imagine what it would look like on the ps5
My family and I played Modnation Racers whenever we could, every track was a banger, the customisation was basically unrestrictive and it infinity replayable, it's a damn shame that United Front Games shut down in 2016, this game 100% needs to get remastered!
I respect looking back at such a W game, but as you get later in the video as someone who played Online with actual players, its not really "unfair", I'd say the only unfair part in this game is when someone's hosting and puts a track on that they made with some stupid secret way to instantly get laps finished.
Also, 27:55 yes, you can use your shield in the air you just miss clicked or your controller is just worn out.
Not being a nerdy keyboard warrior just saying that most of what people would think would be "unfair" is usually just you needing to develop your gamesens
This has to be one of the best games I've played TO THIS DAY though, really wish another game came out like this.
i played tf out of the demo then later on got the full game. this game had so much potential man. I feel like sony was ahead of their time with a lot of games in the ps3 era, but its sad they just let these great series collect dust
I love, i LOVE this game, i think i had at least 500 different car builds, till the time the game told me i couldnt build any more, the amount of tracks ive built, or just building something off the track, just to go there and pretend ia a city or something, the interactions and cutscenes are very fun and i used to laugh a lot with then, ive had so much fun on this game, for me, its simply much better than any mario kart, my favorite kart game, and since im am a hardcore racing fan, one of my favorites racing games
1:45 reason for such a big variance is because it only accounts for the distance of the projectile rather than the time it'll take to hit you. Lightning storms though ? Those warnings are always terribly timed XD.
Way better than Mario kart. I don't know how this game doesn't even get brought up when someone mentions how good Mario kart is. There's no comparison.
This game was fire. Sadly I was so little when I played it I didn't even know how PSN worked, but still it was so much fun

Played this along with LBPK before mario kart and I still love them more today.
my favorite thing was being able to download other peoples' creations. i remember downloading so many of my favorite characters and cool karts online. they need to bring this back

The game was amazing, the race mechanics, the weapon system - once you figured it out, there was no going back to any other kart racing game. Used to play it a lot online, we had crazy battles and a great little community! Miss those times ❤

I was the guy who made a Sonic without using any pre-made sonic face uploaded stickers. I loaned out my custom made sonic to one guy who begged me. So you might've seen my custom sonic around back then.

I agree with you 100%. I like and respect the Mario Kart games but I could never get into them. But when it comes to Crash and Sonic kart racers and Jak X: Combat Racing I’m addicted to them. ModNation Racers is another fun one but the very long loading ruins it.

Every time I see people talk about MNR, I just wish it got it's sequel, LittleBigPlanet Karting *was* originally a MNR2, but Sony had them reskin it, and make like 50% of it worse, and Modnation Racers: Roadtrip improved on the original in so many ways, but because it got stuck on the PsVita, they had to strip it of most of it's online, and the career mode has 0 cutscenes, though I do still think both are worth a play, Roadtrip is easily my favourite PsVita game, and beyond it not being on a home console and the minimal online functionality, I still think it works well enough as a "sequel stand-in".
Basically this comment is just me begging you to play MNR: Roadtrip.

@ThePYMD at 4:38, the track you started racing on was known in the MNR community to be an absolute crash and bash race at the time. It is painful easy to get level two and three attacks after a third of a lap and everyone starts spamming them near the home-stretch. What the AI did to you is tame compared to the shit actual players can do on that track lol.

Not 100% all the playermade content has been lost to time, but with RPCS3 you can still race people online I believe

Actually, this and LBPK are based off the same engine (speculation, but LBPK engine might have been made first)
Actually ModNation was made before LBPK, and LBPK was originally supposed to be a ModNation Racers 2 but they scrapped it mid Development
one of the few games i got day 1. May 2010. best kart racer it should've got ported to PS4 at least Microsoft wouldve done it if it were an Xbox game

The Game is dead and was a Failure cause it suffured from his Mario Kart comparison, and since MK was the Master for everyone this one was already dead in the egg.
Have played it with Mario Kart Player, and their answer was "Its too complicated, too much mechanics"...Because i completely smashed them since i was mastering it.
Too bad its one of those that would only be enjoyed by the one that knows and the one that remember, cause Sony would never make a remake of this.
