- Foxanne, my 1983 Reliant Fox finally came out for a drive, but all is not entirely well. Is she adding herself to the engine replacement list? Features stunning Pembrokeshire scenery.

They should put a "corner of mild interest" in car parking at shows like that, may not be officially in the show, but some may find them interesting to see put together... :D
Ian you do have some balls going off in your cars without a tool box in the back! In the 70's when we were driving 50's and 60's cars we never went anywhere without a tool box. Great trip home. Love Foxanne.
So so great to have Foxanne remain on the Hubnut fleet thank goodness for that !!! 💪💪💪
I Love Foxanne. I feel like reliant motors isn’t documented enough.
The Renault 18 was absolutely magic!
I love Foxanne - such a jolly car - I’m glad you kept her!
That’s great news foxaan becoming permanent member of the fleet 😎
I spotted a Reliant Fox in my area, it's cream with the original wheels. I got very excited!
I’m loving Miss HubNut’s energy these past couple of years, especially her jokes! You two play off each other very well :)
Also as a tiny wee lass, I didn’t realise the fresh chippings road sign was a car; I always thought it was a weird hammer!
I did too on the sign!
@@HubNut well how about that!
Sometimes the best cars are in the carpark rather than in the show
Perfectly Hub Nut. Delightful scenery, idyllic idle and another free ride in the fox. My day is complete.
I used to cut a cricket field in my youth with a mower fitted with a Reliant 848 cc engine, the sound and that start up sound so many memories. Foxanne is a legend of the fleet
Glad your keeping foxanne! Love seeing videos of her
Great to see Foxanne is staying part of the family. I can't see anyone else giving her the love and attention you spoil her with. Even though she has slipped out of tune she still sounded very willing for her age.
“There’s no place like home”… Good job, Foxanne and crew members!
That scared the life out of me when you overtook the horsebox. You said that 50 mph feels like 100 and it looks like it on video. Glad you got home OK it's always nice to see Foxanne out and about. Great video. No where's that clean pair of trousers😮.
Never heard of fun driving and fun bus rides!?
Couldn't believe how good the handling was.
Always fun to see the Fox in action. I also remember watching one of your videos and you commenting that people said the content was a bit much or too long, aiming at the 2CV trip to Croatia, but I've watched that from beginning to end and it was awesome! Your content definitely helps me through tough times now, thanks for that. Love to see it coming!
I am glad to see Foxanne still puttering about. Nice view of Wales. Reminds me of New York state by the Catskills or the Adirondacks. Beautiful vistas with winding roads. Love your videos!
As a Fishguard boy who has for last 6 years has lived in the US I can safely say the only time I've gotten homesick is when I've watched your videos driving Pembrokeshire roads. Great video!
More of a vehicle designed to potter about in, say, with a 1970s worker and his gear, or a pensioners trip down to the allotment to dig up some spuds. I don't think these little Reliants were really designed with the long haul in mind, but what they did they did well enough. It's always nice to see Foxanne being used. Hope you can sort out the engine issues.
Allways worth a wander around the car park at these shows to spot a few other gems
From the symptoms I'd guess (apologies as I'm sure you've considered this already) I'd suggest there is a suspect vacuum advance hose from the distributor or the distributor advance is sticking. Dig out an old Gunsons xenon timing light (remember those) to check if they still make them. It could even be an HT lead breaking down. I had a similar experience of loss of oomph accelerating through the revs on my old Mini in the 80's. HT lead change sorted that out. Anyway it's great to see Foxanne having a little hoon on those wonderful Welsh roads many of which I enjoyed when I could still ride a motorbike back in the day.
Hehe this video reminds me of the times I've hooned around back roads and "forgotten" to tell my wife in the passenger seat that there was a hump back bridge coming up.
Hope Foxanne's engine can be saved and glad she's stayed on the fleet. A proper wee character
Love the sound of the engine, reminded me of when I had a Reliant Rialto 'B' (1984) reg, it was written off in an accident where someone hit me and turned it over 😞
Aw! Can't love that comment.
Thanks for another great video, Ian. Glad that Foxanne is a permanent member of the fleet. You've got a great car on your hands there and a brand ambassador to visit shows with merch in the back.
As long as the shows aren't too far away...

These engines as you may know were built by reliant themselves capable 78 mph I’ve owned several reliants and a good motor would cruise comfortably at motorway speeds . foxAnne’s engine sounds tired and compared to changing the engine on chemmy this would be super easy.
All the best With it Ian it’s a quirky van glad it’s not being sold it’s very cheap to maintain compared to modern motors 👍🏻
Foxanne has much shorter gearing, so the official top speed is just over 70, at all of the revs.
Excellent news about keeping Foxanne 👍
i'm a car guy and i'd never seen a Fox until you got Foxanne, Hubnut. I did drive a Kitten when i was 9 though.
Renault 18TS was one of my dad's favorite cars to own, 1.8 litre Aluminium block, very minimalist. Very good power to weight - A hoot to drive!
Remember Pembrokeshire very well, with good weather it's hard to beat especially outside of school holidays. We'll done Foxanne on your adventures, the noises coming from the engine and gearbox did remind me of a 1973 mini I once owned.
So glad you bought Foxette. Great drive home. 🎼It must have been rough, but it’s over now…🎹
A wing and a prayer. Brilliant that's real driving. All the safety and driver assist features of a take out carton.
I am not in the least bit surprised that hardly anyone knows what a Reliant Fox is. I have lived very close to what was Michaels Of Selby, one of (if not THE) largest Reliant dealers in the country for 40 years. And I had never seen or heard of the Fox until I found your channel.
Excellent Video, the View was nice and country looks Beautiful.
Everytime I visited Wales. I remember Rain and Mist or Low Cloud..!
Good Video Guys. Cheers kim in Oz..!😎
Hi another great video nice to see the fox having a adventure.
That bad idle bring my mind what i had on my first car, Golf MK2 with Pierburg carburetor with auto-choke, that was a nightmare to drive... 😄
Sometimes you had to drive it all the time full throttle and adjust speed with gears and press all three pedals when downshifting or slow it by handbrake.
Then i found some old Japanese carburetor with hand-choke, swapped that on the car and what a night and day difference it was.
I'm glad you didn't sell Foxanne, such s cool part of your fleet and fits in so well with the rest.
Love your 'driving' videos especially with added jeopardy - (ooh! will they make it back home?). I'm usually the driver in my household, so it's nice to be able to just 'look out of the window' and take in the lovely Welsh scenery!😀
Well I am glad that you made it back home in Foxanne. I certainly don't know that type of Reliant existed until I joined the channel. I did enjoy being part of the ride experience through the camera.
I’m with Ian; flat out over cattle grids! 😂
I loved my Renault 18. I quite liked the 19 also.
Come on Ian, drop a 1.6 pinto and 5 speed gearbox and disk brake conversion in Foxanne😄
I'm gonna get hate for that
Foxanne is a real character. Im sure you can tune her up again. The traftor was definitely a Fordson Major.
Really enjoyed this video, it’s always great to see the oh so lovely Fox Anne on the channel, even if she is a little under the weather lol❤️.
Great video, thanks again.
Love driving across the Preselis.
A friend of mine used to regularly take his Black Peugeot 505 V6 manual saloon for a blast along those roads.
His was a late V6 which had been breathed upon slightly by Peugeot in preparation for the 605.
Sadly he parked it up after a garage in Carmarthen botched the Unleaded conversion and it never felt the same again. It sat on the driveway for years with his mothers' 300k plus 305 Diesel estate before he scrapped the two of them. 😪
Aw!
PT cruiser! You love them!
Bleugh! 😁
That looked scary fast......Power, less is more! - 😁😁😁
I used to love using the choke on my v plate Corolla, instead of the accelerator.
I also had a mk3 escort that could change gear without the clutch being depressed, unfortunately once you pressed the clutch it would revert back to needing the clutch to change gear. Only happened a handful of times
Brilliant video Ian I'm sure you will fettle it those views look amazing 👍
Glad you are keeping her she has potential to be very fun I think
It is surprising how perky those 850cc Reliant engines are. A long long time ago I had Robin with that engine and it was amazing how I managed to take much bigger cars away from the traffic lights at least for the the first few hundred yards . Great fun though 😀
Fox 🦊 on the Run 🤓👍
Poor fox anne she need some tlc.All the best to you all
I had the pleasure of owning a Renault 18 gld in my youth. Great car.
I remember when you had this cars engine out on your garage floor actually running
Evening Ian & Carly if you still have points in your ignition set up I think you will find the gap has closed up,and while you're in there check that the base plate is moving freely for the A&R...
Cheers. She's on electronic ignition. I will check the dizzy is tight.
Journeys are never more exciting than when there is doubt about completing them. It was inspiring to see 2 Hubnuts "reliant" on a troubled Fox to get them home. Did you see what I did there? Probably best to have a few basic tools in a tool roll on board, most cars have a couple of common spanner size that you could just about rebuild them with.
Best wishes to that great little car and her carers from Australia
I think after seeing this video and the other fox video, back in the day, they should have been much more popular than they were.
You had a nice day out and the van got you home 🚗🚙🚘👍👍👍👍👍👍
another great video has always Ian and miss hubnut and hublets and hubmutts 👍
The footage of you pacing through the country downhill reminded me of when I had a Volvo 940 diesel and a classic Saab 900 16v: Everytime I drove that Saab it felt like I was flying barely doing the speed limit, because I was so used to the very softly sprung tank of a Volvo with a low rev van engine.
Lovely video, it did occur to me that uncomfortable as it looks imagine how much worse it would feel with the original seats.....
at 2:10 you drive past a red Fabia wagon. My brain said "ooh look, they are driving past my partner's car" even though you are on the other side of the planet. (Our identical red Fabia wagon is in Southern Australia.)
2:19 Cruise Control - I have that in my 2007 Ford Falcon BF-model Station Wagon. Also useful for keeping a certain scientologist actor in check! LOL (get it? Tom Cruise! 😁)
lmao miss hubnut you got me when you said "run forest run" lmao perfect moment
From a previous video 45mpg is good for a load lugger 👍
My engineering head would love to fiddle with the Fox, Reliant engines are potentially surprisingly potent, along with a front disk conversation & better rear axle location
Lovely to see the old girl out, ( Foxanne not Mrs Nuts). She just needs a little tiggle up.
Not so fast, pleased Mr.HubNut.
Liebe Grüße aus Hamburg.
Excellent, I’m so glad you didn’t sell Foxanne.
I am shocked! Shocked. I tell you.
No "Knees alert" 😱😄
Well done Foxann.
I pride myself as being as broadminded as the next fellow, but showing knees like those in public should be banned or at least come with a look away warning. If he had 3 legs he'd be popular at picnics as cricket stumps :))
Now you are proficient in engine swaps, I reckon foxanne would be a great candidate for a Rover V8!
Definitely not fitting!
White knuckle ride!! Love it.
Ifor Williams gets a mention. You get a 'like' for that alone!😉😉
Handy little machine the fox for tip runs etc...
Foxanne--faster than an old tractor!
Great video holidaying in new quay west wales at mo what a lovely place
Nice one Boss ...
Foxanne does have a unique charm to it and the engine sound: love that. Split windows etc would not for me and are frightingly overpriced these days. Sadly prices of younger classics go up as well, such as an E30 or the CX. Always wanted either but probably won't happen.
Foxanne would fly with an EV conversion... there's space for batteries in the back and it would be a nice 40th birthday present :)
AY UP MR HUBNUT AND MISS HUBNUT
I'm glad you're keeping Foxanne (not that I was one of those bashing you for even considering the idea). If the permanent collection is growing then does this mean, a new storage unit is on the horizon 👀
It can't keep growing at the moment, that's for sure. One car gone, another away soon.
@@HubNut - suppose so. I wouldn't be able to part with them.
Love the fox
Nice to see the fox out and about, it wouldn't be HubNut if everything went smoothly.
Ian, you really should listen to Mrs HubNut and reduce the shock load on her lower suspension assembly. After all, a happy Mrs HubNut will let Ian spend more time in the shed fettling the fleet LOL
Ian it isn’t super expensive to get a reconditioned engine it would be well worth it 👍🏻
Great to see foxanne out again
I wonder if the running issue is either points closing or if the timing chain is worn enough that it’s throwing the cam timing out?
"Foxanne doesn't quite have the ride comfort [of a Citroen]"
I noticed that. I don't think Foxanne was enjoying it much either - her insides looked quite green! 😂😂
"[The bumps / cattle stops] are better if you take them quicker". I tried telling my mother that once when hurtling along a similar country road on the Coromandel ranges in an Alfa Sprint. My mother's reply was not as refined as Miss Hubnut's as the Alfa crashed over them similarly to Foxanne!
That old tractor seemed to be going along at a reasonable clip too. I was driving down through Taihape recently and following two great big huge green ones that were doing 60 km/h along State Highway 1! I thought to myself "Only in NZ would you find tractors on THE main route up and down the country!" Do you recall how many times you came across tractors on a main thoroughfare when touring around our roads three years ago? I bet there were a few!
Always love an outing in Foxanne - the whines from her gearbox and the sound of that carburettor growling away are just magical. Adding Miss Hubnut into the mix just makes for additional entertainment with her sense of humour and quick wit. Love seeing you being able to get out and about and enjoy the sunshine....and that beautiful scenery! All the best.
Check the vacuum advance system for leaks / internal seizure.
Ignition points, timing advance and idle springs are for wimps - strap on the nitrous oxide kit :-) .
The driving technique you had to adopt to drive an ailing Foxanne was the same as I had to use with my 1987 Isuzu Trooper II. It had a carbureted 2.3L gasoline I4 that made all of 96bhp when it was at the top of its form in a vehicle the size and shape of a Land Rover 110. Basically, there was only one way to drive it: right pedal to the floor at all times and use the gearshift to vary road speed.
I had a "turbo" diesel one of those. It was little better...
If not appreciating that stratospheric performance, you've obviously not experienced 7.5 Tonnes of Unimog propelled by 120 hp in U1200 form.
Glad Foxanne is staying , nice old girl , me thinks the next thing to leave the HubNut fleet should be that shirt ! :p
Great Fun! Glad you made it home! - The issue you had here reminds me very much of when I had this same issue with my Reliant Regal 21E 700cc back in the 1980's. In my case the plastic heel on the points had worn down, leaving a very small gap in the points and throwing the timing out too! The reason for this in my case, I discovered, was the felt oil pad under the rotor arm was missing, so the cam on the distributor and heel on the points had no lubrication, causing the heel to be worn. According to the haynes manual, the felt pad had to be topped up with oil every x-amount of miles. After I fitted a new felt pad and oiled it regularly, it never went wrong again. Just a thought...... P.S. on the Regal the felt pad sat in the recess on the top of the spindle of the distributor. So as far as I recall was one of the parts of the distributor and not the rotor arm.
Had that very often on my old Mini. Foxanne is on electronic ignition.
@@HubNut Is it still using the points though or another form of sensing the engine rotation position?
In dizzy electronic ignition.
That fely oiler on top of the dist spindle is for oiling the spindles vacuum advance. With points it was recommenged to put a matchhead sozed dob of wheel bearing grease on the plastic (bakelite) heel that follows the cam lobe surface.
@@robames1293 I'm not an expert but, wouldn't the oil from the felt pad have to run down the cam first? Or am I missing something?
Love the shirt
You checked the A&R pipe was attached but is it leaking? Also has the distributor clamp worked loose and it's moved slightly. Poor Foxanne, had the brown stuff thrashed out of her. She's designed to pootle around at 30 - 40 as a local delivery vehicle.
Yeeoow! That cyclist (11:30) saw you halfway into his oncoming lane before you got by him. I suspect you owe him a clean pair of bike shorts.
She did pick up a bit more quickly than I expected...
The number of people overtaking like this on purpose is incredibly high. Makes you see your life in front of your eyes. All to save a few mere seconds.
Genuinely, I got caught out by gravity. I was expecting the cyclist to be well away before I needed to swing out. I think the camera makes it look worse than the reality but I'm happy to concede I could have done that better.
@@HubNut As a part time cyclist, that overtake made me grumpy as well. ..but yeah.. Sometimes shit happens. We are only humans. No one got hurt :)
@@HubNut ua-cam.com/video/l8mPwqiOdrw/v-deo.html yes the new rules (while a little too prescriptive perhaps) would make that very dodgy
Lots of people said back in the day they used the choke as ''Cruise Control''.Can't do that for long as that fouls the plugs. I'd love to see a decibal reading of how loud Foxanne is inside. I can hear you and Carly ok with the mic's.
Yes its almost Peletor intercom system loud ;)
Well remember usually the first part of the choke lever travel just opens the throttle and the rest then deploys choke action. One if the few positives I recall in my rubbish SD1 when leaving it slithering in first gear in the snow and getting out to push
At least it got you home. Electronic ignition is great till it leaves you stranded. If it's a permanent replacement for points not so bad if it's a switch on booster like invacar.
I run points on my mini van never an issue I check as part of service etc.
Great stuff as usual.. is that a stone chip on the windscreen above and to the left of the rear view mirror?
Foxanne's performance is like an old work mate's joke about a Rolls Royce he owned he claimed it was a Rolls Royce Canhardly, it Rolls down the hills and Can hardly get up the hills.
Yes 25 years of that joke told to every new person in the workshop did wear a bit thin!
you should have challenged the guy on the mobility scooter to a drag race!
