Marr revealed to Mojo in 2008 that the success of Rough Trade label mates, Aztec Camera, spurred him on to write this: "A couple of days before I wrote 'This Charming Man' I'd heard 'Walk Out To Winter' by Aztec Camera on BBC Radio 1, and I felt a little jealous. My competitive urges kicked in. I felt that we needed something up-beat and in a major key for Rough Trade to get behind. That's why I wrote it in the key of G, which to this day I rarely do. I knew that 'This Charming Man' would be our next single." Marr continued: "I did the whole thing in one go into this TEAC 3-track tape recorder that I used to write on. I came up with the basic chords and immediately overdubbed the top line and intro riff."

There are two versions of the song - the Hatful of Hollow version (without the solo guitar intro) is indeed in A. It's also quite a different bass line with regards to rhythm and feel especially in the verse. Worth checking and comparing both versions.
5 strings tabbing completely throws me off :(
Absolutely wrong!! :( Andy Rourke uses the F# tuning and in some times your tabs put the open E
If you'd bothered to have a look you would have noticed that there are no notes tabbed on the fifth string!
it's the best cover of Charming Man with tabs on UA-cam. I'm learning with this video.

When i was playing this song i couldn't guess, why there are dissonances when i'm playing with the actual song. Turns out the player actually have micro-tuned the bass. Thanks for that clarification, amazing playthrough!

For anyone confused about the tuning on 4 string: E standard (E A D G) with each string tuned up slightly.
Wyatt yeah it is 1/4 step up tuning like For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica.

My bass has only 4 strings, so I took the tablature that you linked in the video description and worked just fine for me. This song is really fun to play. yep 5 sting does suck ass. I had to learn the song and at the same time to train my brain to read the tab as a 4 string bass (as it should be) and not a 5. But tab is beastly and excellent
Well written tab and great performance! However the fifth string throws me off completely while playing and I believe it would be much better had it been left out.

I find this difficult to follow. It's tabbed for 5 string, right? I could probably follow it better with 5 string or even my 6 string bass. Not anti-multi-string but Rourke was a 4 string bassist.
