Oh heck yeah! If the Vagabond (or anyone really) kills the keep on turn 1 and totally stops me from having a chance at winning, I'm not letting them win, no way!
It just seems bonkers to me that people go after Cats on turn one. They're already an underdog. If you have to attack someone right away, they're the last faction I'd target. I'm glad they're buffing cats in Advanced Setup.
When you're the Cats versus a potentially aggressive Vagabond, you really CANNOT bunch all your buildings up in a single clearing; at least not early in the game. Spread the buildings out, make sure you spend your wood each turn, and make sure you get at least 3 warriors in the your Keep to discourage aggression.

Im kind of new to Root, only have a couple of games under my belt. Ive often heard about the consequences of a turn 1 keep assault, but never really understood the repercussion it really had on the game. The birds have more space to build their roost without much competition and the the same can be said about the lizards garden. Cats cant really do anything else than going for a vendetta, and it kinda leaves a "meh" aftertaste for the rest of the game. On another note, awesome lizard win! The only time i played it, i didnt protect my gardens and i got board wiped. Definitly going to try again with some of them LotB tactics
When we play at home we add a tiny custom rule for the Vagabond. If you break a Vagabond item thats 1 point for you, it always baffles me that theres really no incentive in attacking the Vagabond other than stoping him from winning. The thing is if you expend 1 or 2 turns controlling the enemy Vagabond you are basicaly going to lose guaranteed since you wasted so much time and resources for nothing. With this custom rule theres an actual reason to get that bastard.

Great game and video. When you talked about game balance being really important, I felt it. I know the game fairly well and it always pains me to see my opponent go after me because they're afraid, leaving another player completely unchallenged. You've got to look at the balance of powers as a whole when deciding where to direct aggression and defence. Otherwise you just hand the game to a player, to the detriment of everyone else.

I really enjoy root digital. I havnt had a chance to play with the new deck yet. Gonna try and put some time in next day off. I do wish the developers would update it more often or just in general care more about it. Show root digital some love please.
Same with the lizards cult. Fear of the faithful does not seem random. It takes the suited card, fox garden fox card, or the best card, an ambush usually. I never lose a random card.
In my opinion the Birds are the first choice. Play a game or two with them and then try the Cats. But keep in mind that knowing the mechanics of each faction doesn’t mean it’s easy to win with. It takes time. Become familiar with each faction and then try a new one. If you love it there’s plenty more. Have fun!

Just jumped into the ROOT train:D but with board version, i think commander as first is really powerfull, you can kill much faster, also 1 warrior for 2 damage? hell yeah can swarm way more also
I bought all of the roots physical boardgames expansions and all the digital content as well I've only been able to play on digital so far but it's because of your videos that I even heard about this game and was able to start playing I appreciate the great content an the strategy guides! The concept is to bring in 2 apex predators that cause middle-map mayhem by utilizing the forests + ruins (The Wolf Pack) and the river/lake (Crocodilian Defenders). The Marauder expansion just released a few weeks ago (here in Canada) and it's amazing. I love the Lord's use of items and the Keepers use of the forests. It inspired me to take the concept a bit further and use more of the map's untouched areas..
Had similar game...dude demolished the keep with vagabond first turn and i steamrolled the game with Birds...so a dubious opening tbh...quick points grab but long term not the best strategy

Yeah it works both ways. They could have denied my dom swapping. They could attack me. But then ill strike back with conversions. Thats why I love them. they are a puzzle.
Vengeance is a two sided sword. On turn 2, the cat really didn't have to attack the vagabond since vagabond was gonna go to the forest anyway. Or was it not gonna?
I play the table top game. This is my first time seeing the digital version. Found it a little hard to follow at first then got the hang of it. One question came to mind… was the Vagabond scoring a point by killing the hostile cats with the crossbow strike? I didn’t think you could get infamy that way.
Could you tell me why vangabond get the second point in first round, as I know if hostile mode he can get point by remove building and token only. Is this bug game or something I don't know ? Thank you so much. 😊
@@LordoftheBoard i played 23 games and won 11 of them then became too proud of my record and became anxious at the thought of trying to stress myself out keeping that win % going. (Which would have been an “impossibility). Lol
Going after the cats keep so early just honestly feels really rude and dirty considering they can be eliminated. Instead of eliminating the keep players should just be able to score points for "sieging" it until the cats can defend it I think. In a game with friends I would restart. what's the point of playing if you're essentially going to treat one player as irrelevant from turn 1
That's a really cool houserule! The keep cannot be killed, and if an enemy rules the clearing with the keep they gain one point at the end of their turn a la The Pass from the mountain map. If playing with it, I would also give cats an extra 1 or 2 warriors in the keep at the start.
The Lizards are so weak, the game has to go perfectly good for them and they still can only *barely* win. I think the Favor cards really help them out if you can pull them off, but most people don't like them and use the Partisans deck instead. I hope they get buffed in more ways than just the setup.
I think at this state they are okay! They are definitely bottom tier but I’ve found they can be quite a problem for other factions which I love. The cards matter a lot though for sure
When dominance cards are discarded they are supposed to be set in an open supply. At any time during your turn your can discard a suited card for dominance of the same from the open supply. Or discard a wild for any of them :)
Yeah, that ranger.... I like the ranger. I think it's a good vagabond. But man do people give it and badgiter a bad name with the absolutely rude moves. Very narrow thinking, because the moves aren't even that good. You essentially eliminate a player, which is someone you need to check other militants, and out your intentions to the entire table so that they all turn against you. Yes, ranger, hadgebadge, and the flying squirrel of death, are very aggressive vagrants, but you can play aggressively and still play fair. Poor badgers can't even get hired to help in battles because no one trusts them.
Vagabond is just so OP, easily the worst designed faction in the game. Despite being sent to the woods 4-5 times they almost won. Infamy is just way too overpowered, really everything they do is just way too much, there's very little they can do that doesn't give them points... Meanwhile, nobody benefits from attacking the vagabond.
@@northabbot7116 I don’t believe they took that many hits. They didn’t mention having too. It’s possible. But the text in the current game has been bugging with the new release. I remember checking their backpack and nothing seemed off from what I could tell
Dunno why people compelement cat player.He went full rage vendetta on vagabond instead of trying to score point which is the point of the game and waste an hour of time for vendetta in video game lol.
Root is more than just scoring points. It’s also a conversation. The vagabond taking cats out lets other factions grow super powered. And in the end neither player wins because table balance was disrupted by a player wanting to get 6 points and knock out a player from the game. If the cats had scored points even after that they would have had a hard time getting back into the game. People are complimenting the cats because they didn’t just quit and ensured the VB didn’t win after pulling that move. Also at live tables the VB is nerfed and in tournaments. So digital we live with the Broken VB still

@@user-ly5oo2hd7p no it’s not always the right move. But in this cats since it’s digital the cats were probably showing VB that doing greedy plays like that towards cats throws the table off. It is a highly asymmetric negotiation game. When you confine it to digital weird things happen. It sounds like root may just not be your style of game. But to me this was a blast and was peak content haha.

Total - that’s always the goal. However as we see here. They were in the forest most of the game because of that decision. And they didn’t even get the W. They could have played it better. Usually turn one keep helps other factions rise up. And if they score faster than you you just shot yourself in the foot - had a boring forest game and the cats have a boring game. But yeah the game is to win. It’s just turn one keeping is like my least favorite way for people to attempt to win
The thing we have to consider here is that Root is an assymetrical POLITICAL game at its core. That's right, its not just a war game, but a game where you need tabletalk and some degree of charisma to be able to get an advantage. Table talk makes or breaks a game session. To sum it up, the player that gets punished by other players the most will lose (generally) and the player that carries on with his or her plans unnoticed or without too much intervention will almost always win. It is true the objective of the game is to win it by outscoring your rivals, but, as LOTB already stated, there are smarter ways to do it. Going full aggro turn 1 or 2 will almost always net you hate from the affected faction and they will make sure you lose the game. VB could have explored ruins and aided the first couple of turns, crafting here and there, and THEN turning hostile at the 15 VP mark so they get a chance to win. All factions are nearly the same, you need a balanced board and some alliances to be able to get the win. Its impossible for any single player to keep all other 3 factions in check simultaneously, hence why you need the help from others. Btw, Im a huge fan LOTB!!! love your content. I hope I get to play Root with you someday!!!
I'm gonna agree with LotB on this one. If you take out cats early like this, they will most likely struggle to win and therefore won't have any reason to sink their game just to stop you. If a player does this sort of thing to me, I will make sure they don't win. Not because I'm petty but because it is important for people to understand that in Root, early player elimination has consequences. Player elimination is encouraged in Risk (which is why I don't enjoy that game) but if you do it in Root, that player will be around all game to exact revenge.
@@View619 Of course not. Mutually assured destruction means if you kill me, I'll kill you back, the mere threat of retaliation is what prevents the first strike. The USSR and USA didn't engage in nuclear war because of MAD. If the Vagabond player knows I don't tolerate that sort of thing in my games, they'll think twice before killing me keep. I want this policy of mine to be well-known to all. If you take out my keep like this Vagabond did, you will not win and I will make sure of it. That's how you utilize the threat of MAD in a strategically smart way.

I just noticed the bird combat at 38:10 did one commander dmg and it made the vb dmg 3 items.

Understanding Lizards as opponents is really difficult. They had to fight you. Nobody fought you. They were like fighting each other helping you win 🤣

TBH if you go for my fort when I'm cats on turn one I would just alt-F4 out, or spend the entire game making sure you lose.

@@LordoftheBoard i played 23 games and won 11 of them then became too proud of my record and became anxious at the thought of trying to stress myself out keeping that win % going. (Which would have been an “impossibility). Lol
More Root playthough plzzzz
Going after the cats keep so early just honestly feels really rude and dirty considering they can be eliminated. Instead of eliminating the keep players should just be able to score points for "sieging" it until the cats can defend it I think.
In a game with friends I would restart. what's the point of playing if you're essentially going to treat one player as irrelevant from turn 1
Im happy the cats stayed to attack the Ranger all game. But it must have taken a lot of strength.
That's a really cool houserule! The keep cannot be killed, and if an enemy rules the clearing with the keep they gain one point at the end of their turn a la The Pass from the mountain map. If playing with it, I would also give cats an extra 1 or 2 warriors in the keep at the start.
The Lizards are so weak, the game has to go perfectly good for them and they still can only *barely* win. I think the Favor cards really help them out if you can pull them off, but most people don't like them and use the Partisans deck instead. I hope they get buffed in more ways than just the setup.
I think at this state they are okay! They are definitely bottom tier but I’ve found they can be quite a problem for other factions which I love. The cards matter a lot though for sure

How does dom swaping work in table top games?
When dominance cards are discarded they are supposed to be set in an open supply. At any time during your turn your can discard a suited card for dominance of the same from the open supply. Or discard a wild for any of them :)

Mostly trying to point shade and not seem as large of a threat. Also i wanted to beef up that clearing to deter any attacks

Yeah, that ranger.... I like the ranger. I think it's a good vagabond. But man do people give it and badgiter a bad name with the absolutely rude moves. Very narrow thinking, because the moves aren't even that good. You essentially eliminate a player, which is someone you need to check other militants, and out your intentions to the entire table so that they all turn against you. Yes, ranger, hadgebadge, and the flying squirrel of death, are very aggressive vagrants, but you can play aggressively and still play fair. Poor badgers can't even get hired to help in battles because no one trusts them.
Vagabond is just so OP, easily the worst designed faction in the game. Despite being sent to the woods 4-5 times they almost won. Infamy is just way too overpowered, really everything they do is just way too much, there's very little they can do that doesn't give them points... Meanwhile, nobody benefits from attacking the vagabond.

@@northabbot7116 I don’t believe they took that many hits. They didn’t mention having too. It’s possible. But the text in the current game has been bugging with the new release. I remember checking their backpack and nothing seemed off from what I could tell

Dunno why people compelement cat player.He went full rage vendetta on vagabond instead of trying to score point which is the point of the game and waste an hour of time for vendetta in video game lol.
Root is more than just scoring points. It’s also a conversation. The vagabond taking cats out lets other factions grow super powered. And in the end neither player wins because table balance was disrupted by a player wanting to get 6 points and knock out a player from the game. If the cats had scored points even after that they would have had a hard time getting back into the game. People are complimenting the cats because they didn’t just quit and ensured the VB didn’t win after pulling that move. Also at live tables the VB is nerfed and in tournaments. So digital we live with the Broken VB still

@@user-ly5oo2hd7p no it’s not always the right move. But in this cats since it’s digital the cats were probably showing VB that doing greedy plays like that towards cats throws the table off.
It is a highly asymmetric negotiation game. When you confine it to digital weird things happen.
It sounds like root may just not be your style of game. But to me this was a blast and was peak content haha.

@@user-ly5oo2hd7p I would have to respectfully disagree. Only because I’ve seen so many tournament games. And lizards have won games with pro players. I think sure this can help but it’s not the majority of the way.
Also yes kingmaking is inherent in the design. It’s a positive for me. Good for storytelling.

Total - that’s always the goal. However as we see here. They were in the forest most of the game because of that decision. And they didn’t even get the W. They could have played it better. Usually turn one keep helps other factions rise up. And if they score faster than you you just shot yourself in the foot - had a boring forest game and the cats have a boring game. But yeah the game is to win. It’s just turn one keeping is like my least favorite way for people to attempt to win
The thing we have to consider here is that Root is an assymetrical POLITICAL game at its core.
That's right, its not just a war game, but a game where you need tabletalk and some degree of charisma to be able to get an advantage.
Table talk makes or breaks a game session.
To sum it up, the player that gets punished by other players the most will lose (generally) and the player that carries on with his or her plans unnoticed or without too much intervention will almost always win.
It is true the objective of the game is to win it by outscoring your rivals, but, as LOTB already stated, there are smarter ways to do it. Going full aggro turn 1 or 2 will almost always net you hate from the affected faction and they will make sure you lose the game.
VB could have explored ruins and aided the first couple of turns, crafting here and there, and THEN turning hostile at the 15 VP mark so they get a chance to win. All factions are nearly the same, you need a balanced board and some alliances to be able to get the win. Its impossible for any single player to keep all other 3 factions in check simultaneously, hence why you need the help from others.

I'm gonna agree with LotB on this one. If you take out cats early like this, they will most likely struggle to win and therefore won't have any reason to sink their game just to stop you. If a player does this sort of thing to me, I will make sure they don't win. Not because I'm petty but because it is important for people to understand that in Root, early player elimination has consequences. Player elimination is encouraged in Risk (which is why I don't enjoy that game) but if you do it in Root, that player will be around all game to exact revenge.
Mutual assured destruction isn't a good winning strategy.
@@View619 Of course not. Mutually assured destruction means if you kill me, I'll kill you back, the mere threat of retaliation is what prevents the first strike. The USSR and USA didn't engage in nuclear war because of MAD. If the Vagabond player knows I don't tolerate that sort of thing in my games, they'll think twice before killing me keep. I want this policy of mine to be well-known to all. If you take out my keep like this Vagabond did, you will not win and I will make sure of it. That's how you utilize the threat of MAD in a strategically smart way.
