What I really don't get about this one is why the didn't use the pre-existing black characters from the legend. Memnon, the Ethiopian king and his army show up in the 9th year of the war (around the same time as the amazons) to help the Trojans. The guy is an absolute badass said to rival even Achilles. Also, if they wanted to go with the "the gods are real" angle, they should have embraced it fully and go for the Diomede warrior against Aphtodite and Ares arc from the Iliade.

@@jeremiah_12 Fun fact, the guy wasn't even real. Only ever mentioned in the Illiad, no historical proof other than future scholars debating his origin for their own agenda. Considering his mother was the Goddess of the dawn I don't really know how can determine his lineage. So I think debating whether he was African or not or black or not is a moot point.

Well, doesn't Zeus appear as a bull sometimes? So taking the form of a black guy isn't that big of a deal, really. Achilles is worse, because it's not like he can shape shift and Homer specifically described him as blonde and blue eyed. A better approach would have been to make, say, Memnon the ethiopian an important viewpoint character, he's completely ignored in adaptations.

Yes! Dude, I thought the same things! Just like the Marco Polo show, I thought that the actors were just bland and the chemistry was barely there. And we finally get a retelling that shows how the war being started with the gods (where's my crazy Eris scene?) and which deity was on who's side, but they were just background. They didn't appear in most episodes and they have a real presence through the actual story, they would have made the series so much more interesting, and I was so excited. Lost potential. Everything would have felt way more mythical. I'm a GIANT Greek myth affectionado and this series was simply so-so. I could see that they wanted to land us on Odysseus's journey next, but I didn't think they wrote him very well.... Maybe in another 15 years I'll get that perfect retelling I've always dreamed of.

I loved the show. I don't know any such a good mythological adaptation. In Troy, the movie Paris was such a coward character. I think this show is closer to the poem than the movie. The gods that only at very few occasions intervene is exactly the thing with the gods. It isn't "Gods of Egypt" or "Immortals" it actually tells the story. The only thing I missed was: In the poem, Troy itself is something like the main character. Not literally but it is the center. And sadly they hat too little budget to make the city feel important or alive. In the Brad Pitt movie, they just put huge CGI Walls there. But that makes it only big not important or alive. And also the fact, that it is not a stupid move about one hero makes it more interesting. In the Brad Pitt movie, it is all about Achilles and a bit about Paris but he was just annoying. Hector was also not impressive. Here in this show, you don't know who lives for how long. All these heroes are somewhat equal and I loved this a lot.

So yeah i guess i anderstand people who expected to see more action and get bored by the show. It wasn't great but there are some very good and cool things in it (as my favorite one when godesses call their champions on the battlefield in ep 3). The surnatural part with the gods is cool, and the fact that the show focus a lot on Odysseus throuh the show as much as the main Illiad characters is hyping me for a season 2 based on the coming back to Ithaq by Odysseus !

assuming that people like Achilles were real people, which evidence suggests they were since they discovered the ruins of Troy, who is to say he wasn't black, or at least bronze? Greece is a warm climate- it's close to tropical. And it's directly across from Egypt, which is at that sweet middle spot between Africa and the Middle East, so who is to say that he wasn't colored? it's a possibility, but with no paintings, all we can do is guess. same goes for pretty much every historical figure in that area before the advent of portraits.

I like that the Gods are more involved in the series than in the Movie, and I really like the focus on the side characters other than just Achilles. Like, I can totally get behind the love stories being brought up, i love this sm. Also, the weight and gravity of The War itself. This series feels just a bit grittier, more desperate, more war-torn. They were called Melanesian’s the sons of Solomon. It could be possible that Achilles would be apart of that race. Race wasn’t really a concept there at that time, but it happens to be black people in Greek mythology. Memnon, Andromeda, atheios, the athiopians, and etc. it’s pretty sad that they were more progressive back then then we are now.

I disagree that the show barely tried anything new. It touches on a number of different aspects, including "the gods can be seen interfering" angle that you mentioned. Plus, it gives more backstory. If one wants to say that it's essentially the same story as the movie, well, it's supposed to be. It's often that audiences don't want drastic changes; just look at how people are reacting to the black casting (especially that of Achilles) and are considering that drastic. The casting of black actors didn't bother me. I was surprised by it, but I was also surprised by the casting of Helen.

With that being said, I refuse to watch this show simply because they cast a black actor to play the great Greek hero Achilles. Period. It's called death of a city and it actually shows you the slow death of a city. I'm a Greek history and archaeology major, and I truly simp Homer for a lot of reasons, so you can imagine any Iliad content is welcomed on my part, but i just discovered this show, finished the first couple of episodes and marveled at how creators don't seem to grasp the point: drama is the epicenter of a tragedy (it's in the title for god's sake), but shows don't want to appear too ridiculous or campy with their content, so they shy away from truly great depictions of deities, epics, tragic characters etc. I truly long to see an adaptation with creators who understand that the drama of it all is what made these epics so alluring to the public, then and now. 'screaming, crying' is the reaction i want to have when watching any tragedy adaptation, not 'meh'.

Weird casting.... The problem isn't that they cast people of African descent. Although the proportion seems abit unlikely.. Before the Bronze age collapse states around the eastern Mediterranean area had alot of contact. The issue is why are they of West African and Sub Saharan appearance???? Surely you could cast some Sudanese as representing Numidians, or have Ethiopians cast. It's very lazy casting. Atleast that would be representative of what we know of the the people of the time.

Most of the people who liked that show obviously don't give a fuck about Homer. I'm not saying they should. It's fine. But here's the problem with it. If it were an honest show, it'd be subtitled "A 21st century sensibilities-based re-imagining of the Trojan War myth (so forget about that blind old fart from the 8th century BC and his tales that no one cares about anymore)". Not "Inspired by Homer and the Greek myths". No, mate, nooooo. That's just wrong.
This show has nothing whatsoever to do with Homer. Let's get this absolutely clear. It merely picks up some basic elements of the story and completely alters its core. Completely different characters, completely different motives and actions, and, ultimately, a completely different story. Not "the old story with a twist". No. "A new story with some elements of the old one". This is not an interpretation of the Iliad, as implied. This is a caricature. Saying this show is inspired by Homer is like saying "Zombie Hamlet" (very funny movie, go see it) is an interpretation of the eponymous Shakespearean tragedy.
Again: (Putting aside the shameless and false appropriation of the literary tradition) there's nothing wrong with telling the story you wanted to tell. It's simply important not to lie to ourselves. This show is very specific in its duality of effect, depending on the viewer themselves:
If you don't give a fuck about Homer and Greek mythology (you're not obligated to, as established), go ahead and watch this show. I don't think it's anything special, the pace is quite slow, the acting is mediocre to say the least and the overall experience is pretty forgettable... But it does have its moments, the action is adequate, particularly as you approach the end of the series, the atmosphere build-up is not bad, and as a whole, I can see why someone who enjoys epic TV dramas would reasonably enjoy this one too. Like you've been entertained by so many other shows, you'll probably be entertained by this one as well. No guarantee you'll remember it a few months later, but that's beside the point. The show was made to entertain so reward it for that.
    HOWEVER
If you're a fucking weirdo who happens to love Homer and Greek mythology (btw, grow up, you mug), STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THAT SHOW. Seriously. There's nothing for you here. Yet another disappointment, like every Hollywood movie about the Trojan War you ever watched, foolishly hoping it would at long last be an adequate representation of the epos you knew and loved. The same old stuff is here to disturb you yet again. You'll get your sadistic Atreids (shut up, when Homer repeatedly spoke of "kind Menelaus" he was OBVIOUSLY lying, haven't you figured that out by now), your dumb (and, apparently, gay - not that there's anything wrong with it, to quote Seinfeld) Achilles (because military might OBVIOUSLY equates to mindless violence, come on, catch up will you), your brave and heroic Paris (sorry, "Alexander" - what's that you sayin', Homer depicts him as the only man despised as fiercely by his fellow Trojans as by his Greek enemies? Irrelevant), your Helen who not for a single moment regrets what she's done (never mind that this is ALL SHE EVER DOES in the Iliad AS WELL AS in the Odyssey), oh, and just for a spin of originality, this time around you'll also get a weak Odysseus who gets pushed around - because, you know, why the hell not?
Forget about your stories of honor, respect, valor in BOTH SIDES, hybris and nemesis, cruel gods who manipulate humans at every turn, rage - "menis" that just might be a disguise for the internal "live to be a peaceful but insignificant old man or die young and be glorified forever?" conflict. Seriously, you're not getting ANY of that in this show. And you never will. Maybe it has to do with how the West originally came to be acquainted with the tale, I don't know, I'm not a scholar. But I've given up hope. A properly filmed (or televised) Iliad is never to be.
At least not from a Hollywood studio or a British broadcasting corporation.

My favorite character in the story of the Trojan war is of course Achilles, as I bet is the same for many. Now I have always been a huge sports fan, love boxing especially, and almost all of my favorite fighters, and athletes are men of African decent (black men). But boy was I thrown off when I see that they chose to cast a bald headed black guy in place of Achilles, who historically is known to be a white man with blue eyes and long blond hair. Strange choice I thought, and of course had flash thoughts of liberal Hollywood using their PC value system over historical accuracy. But more important I thought, is entertainment, and I have enjoyed many Marvel movies that we all know don't stick to the character's origins properly, so I decided to give the black Achilles as fair a chance as I possibly could. And boy did Achilles let me down at every turn. The show gave almost no illustration of Achilles being an elite warrior, other than extremely brief mentions here and there, but no assurance by demonstration of battle the way the Movie Troy did with Brad Pitt. Maybe its unfair to expect this director and actor to accomplish what the movie did with the character, but I felt completely let down at every turn by this show's depiction of Achilles. I saw some attempt to outline his character as the kind of stoic, focused, battled hardened warrior who wants only glory and blood. But it just wasnt really there for me. That is really my main gripe other than the kind of tacky scenes involving the Gods.

I saw episode 1 and wanted to see if should invest more time in this show. The comments are deplorable because people are hypocrites as they take exception to black actors playing figures they assume are white because of previous portrayals, but can easily accept 'other' historical accuracies, chief among them, the accent. I don't understand why countries in Europe that are near the Mediterranean or close to Northern Africa are assumed to solely have fair skinned people. Spartacus (Starz) is my absolute favorite show, particularly season one. Andy Whitfield's portrayal of Spartacus was a revelation.

Yeah, "fictional characters"... in a setting based on historical events where very likely no Greek Hoplites where dark-African black. More importantly, Achilles who specifically is described in the Iliad to have a long golden mane and blue eyes and very youthful appearance? Now he suddenly looks very dark-skinned African-black and bald, and like he's in his 30s.
It's about accuracy to history and mythology, not about whether they are fictional characters or not.

Nah, I really enjoyed it. It was like a less epic, but more realistic & faithful telling of the movies adaptation with a lot more exposition and screen time. Also, on your point of how they handled scenes which were similar too the movies, it's pretty disingenuous to say they were "exactly" the same. The situations may have occurred in similar way but there were definitely differences from how it happened in the movie for instance Achilles at the gates of troy he had prisoners this time that he was executing in order too get hector to show himself & their fight seemed less choreographed and scripted but more authentic and gritty this time around. Anyway, overall I liked the show quite a bit, the only criticism I have which was 1 of my criticisms from the movie is that I wanted a lot more screen time from achilles. Real talk, I'd take an entire show dedicated to that incredible character... take me through the events of his life and show me how he became so awesome!
Lastly, I wasn't sure how I would feel about black achilles/zeus at first it did seem like an odd casting choice at first but I got over it as soon as I saw them both in their first scenes. They both did an incredible job, especially Achilles I want to see more from that actor. I hope there's a season 2, I always wanted a follow up movie of troy with sean bean playing through the events of the odyssey but that never did happen :(, hopefully this time around we get too see his brother Benjen do it though.

Not woke enough, they should have casted Amy Schumer as Helen, the show needed more body shape representation.
I also find the casting of Achilles by a black man as deeply offensive because Achilles should have been played by a transgendered, black, native-American, gay, Muslim WOMAN. Achilles being played by a straight black man and not a gay, trans-woman just reinforces the heteronormative, racist patriarchy.
The show needs more equal representation, 1 out of 10 for me.

But since the story is based on a myth and not history, and they chose to go with their own interpretation of it, I think it's fine. Just like they chose to go a different route with the 2004 Brad Pitt movie. In any case I thought the main guy who played Paris here was terrible :D

The way the story is told makes total sense to women and at least half of the story evolves from their perspective. You didn't even mention the Amanzons, which did not appear in the film version! Helen and all that was going on behind her silence, Andromache's loss of husband and child, Brisies sharing the tent with two worriors...The show also makes sure to show the transition of power from a kingdom in which king and queen ruled together (Troy) to one in which men subdue women...I could go on, but instead I sugest you ask more women who watched the show what they thought about it. You will probably be surprised!

Its half and half for me. I feel like its a little more accurate than the movie was story wise but at the same time the actor to character choices ruined it. Its not about racism. Its about historical accuracy being accurate even if its from a myth. I thought Helen was a weird choice too. I got nothing against the actress personally but for story sake I really don't see her being the face of the most beautiful Spartan queen in all of myth. Sorry. Why also make Odysseus such a cold and calculating man only to ruin it by taking out his boost about how he won the war by himself and fuck Poseidon? (Which is the entire point of the fucking Odyssey) Why give him a moment of "Well I know I just murdered people by the thousands but one more child will make me a horrible person so now i'm sad."? Why not just make him into a bastard character? Again thats the entire point of the Odyssey. Its the reason why he goes through so much bullshit. Despite alllllll of my ranting about how bad it was. It had really good points as well. This is why I'm left feeling half and half but seeing as i've made this too long already i'm going to stop it right here. Just give it a watch and if you don't like it. Well. Its only a tv show.

notforvideos Stayed close to the myth? What are you talking about? None of the gods are portrayed even remotely accurately, half of the Bronze Age GREEK cast is black for absolutely no reason, the acting is atrocious, in the first or second episode Helen references the ROMAN goddess Diana, who didn’t exist yet, considering rome wouldn’t even be founded for another several hundreds of years. The scale made the war look like a water balloon fight, there’s nothing making you believe that it’s the most massive war of all history. Before menelaus and Agamemnon set sail, Artemis (patron goddess of young maidens) demands the sacrifice of a young maiden. Makes sense. The logic behind this is even MORE baffling. Supposedly, the sea will not let them sail. So why the FUCK do they not pray to the GOD OF THE SEA. This show is an absolute INSULT to anyone who has any knowledge and fascination with the actual war and mythos.

David Wald you forgot the fact that the trojans for some reason always sally out to fight every time the greeks attack, even though they have WALLS. For god´s sake there was a reason the trojan horse was needed!

Yeah, I was really shocked when Zeus was revealed to be black, but I explained it away thinking Zeus can look like anything for any reason, so who cares? But I really was heart broken when Achilles and Patroclus were black. I saw a scene just now with literally half or more of the myrmidons marching back from a battle were black. Some scenes showed only black myrmidons. I don't have any racist feelings towards black people, but it seems like the casting guy for this show was like 'technically there were some black people in ancient Greece' and proceeded to just make as many people black as possible without making it believable. This show it total blackwashing.
