Wasn’t it the UN that defended South Korea ? And before you say the rest of the free world wasn’t a major player , many of the free nations contributed massively and lost 1000’s of lives . So I would ask you to put things in prospective. Clearly your British educated Korean doesn’t know or appreciate the UKs contribution to the defence of South Korea
South Korea's basically a US colony, surrounded by China, Russia, Japan. Without the US SK wouldn't have existed and would have been taken over by North Korea backed by the communists.

I was born in Korea and moved to the states when I was 7 years old. I am currently 41 and lived most of my life in Texas and cannot stop saying “y’all” every other sentence 😂 I met my husband who is also Korean and was born in Houston, Texas and he straight up sounds like a country boy. We cannot wait to visit Korea someday, hopefully soon with our 2 young kids (10 &6) who will have culture shock when we visit! Sending love from the US!!❤️

I saw a very southern "asian" on tv and thought it was funny. Being from Canada we see all kinds of people but for some reason I had never really thought about asian immigrants growing up with a southern drawl or a boston, or nyc accent.

I'm a rancher from Texas and when I was in Seoul, all the people I met had a million questions and seemed genuinely interested in the states and Texas. I definitely perpetuated the Texan stereotype
Even traveling within the states Texas has a strong stereotype that we just seem to fulfill for people specially when they hear our southern accent to begin with! I hope to get to travel to Korea soon myself. Hello from a fellow Texan!

Anna doesn’t have an RP accent. Anna has a Korean accent with heavy British influence (I can’t pinpoint the accent - but it’s a southern English one). To a native British speaker, Anna doesn’t sound British it is obvious English isn’t her first language. That’s not to say her English is bad, but people don’t really know the textures and sounds of British accents, so you make statements like yours. Peace!
I’m British, lived in Korea for a year teaching English, I taught American English words but my school wanted me to talk in my British accent and all Koreans loved my accent, they also wanted me to teach them British English. But I also have a posh British accent.
I am enjoying all of these videos! As a Korean American adoptee, this one was particularly interesting. I would love to know more about Korean adoptees in Korea. Like what made them come back to Korea and stay. What struggles have they faced and what have they've gained. Also have they gotten their Korean citizenship back and how did they do it? I'm also curious if David and Anna have ever met or interacted with Korean adoptees, since you have opportunities to meet more diverse communities.
As a college student learning Korean in America and planning to visit in a few years, I think this discussion gave me some more insight into the environment you will encounter there. Thanks for the great episode!
I really like the way the interviews are conducted it's both funny and educational without losing the thread of the discussion, and I appreciate the fact that the host is a great listener and asks questions without leading the answer too much, it makes the difference. 42:39 : in order to push the discussion a bit far and deep, it would be interesting to do a part 2 of this subject, with non-white Americans (for ex Asian, Black, Latin, and American Korean born in US). Although the experience of the two guests is very encouraging and I wish them much success in their Korean life, I am not sure that this is really representative of the majority of Americans (all colors included); if we want to take into account the "image" of the American in the imaginary of the koreans. Of course it would be a little bit tricky, but it would be interesting to put in perspective the different experiences (with same passport), and especially it would allow people to have a real idea of what to expect when coming to Korea based on their background, without romanticism (even if each experience is different). In the media and all the Korean podcasts I've seen so far the subject is rarely discussed. Great episode, can't wait for the next one !
Just want to share my journey since its a bit different than what was mentioned in this video. I’m a 26 yr old, US born citizen who’s moving to Korea next month. I have a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Cyber Security but work as a Software Engineer and Adjunct College Professor (both jobs fully remote), so they don’t mind me working from Korea! My income easily sustains me in the US, but I’ve always wanted to live in Korea (most of my friends in highschool/college were korean), so I decided to move to Seoul next month! I know I might be a unique case but figured I’d mention it as another way to get to Korea without having to teach English!
that's wild my husband also works remote for a tech company but they have a limited list of 10 or so states you can live in for tax reasons. I'm kinda shocked they'd let you live in a foreign country.
@@Atropabelopa yeah during the interviewing process I was very particular with which companies i would even talk to. If they didn’t allow for international remote work I wouldn’t bother after the phone interview. It did result in a longer period of time to get that job offer (4 months) but all in all i think it was worth it!

Great show. I was stationed in Daegu with the US Air Force, way back in 1987. It was a great place to be. Great people, who I feel were making a generational transition on to the world stage. The Olympics were coming followed by the World Cup. This exposed the world to Korean culture, music and hospitality. These events moved people’s perceptions of Korea from the “MASH” era into a modern fresh Korea.

OMG! This was a great episode. I laughed so much thanks to Anna. I learned size matters from Anna 😅😅. OAN, it is true we Americans love to talk to anyone, especially if we see something and make eye contact. No matter what it is. Rain, snow, usually outfit. I just had a conversation with my delivery guy, Lol. I am looking forward to the next episode. P.S. I am a Black American woman, and I am learning Korean with Duolingo (it's slow going) so I can understand the language when I visit one day. Plus, understand Kdramas and KPOP.
Living in Seoul as a non-American white person was really funny because as I speak fluent English with no strong accent, every Korean I met immediately assumed I was American and many were actually really confused when I told them I wasn't. But this has also happened to me in Europe, a French man started yelling at me at a restaurant in Italy because he assumed I was American and thus thought I was being loud and had no manners even though I wasn't louder than my friends who had stronger accents in their English... it's funny now but I was offended not only because he was rude but also prejudiced towards Americans, even though I'm sure sometimes the stereotypes are true 😅 funny thing is I've never even been to the US 😂 but no native US citizen has ever mistaken me for a native speaker so I've only heard it from people from non-English speaking countries

As an international relations student i almost choke when he said American is a superpower..this people is living in 90s i guess...if you look through IR students view n world leader america is collapsing be it dollar, be it economy, or be it culturally which I don’t think they have...the only superpower rising like at max in this decade is China.. its the bitter truth....America’s superpower is now studied in history now...because every country is realising how cruel America is...America could be hero for south korea but its villain for most of the countries Vietnam, iran, iraq, Afghanistan,venezuala etc...the problem with korea is too dependent on America but maintaining hostility with neighbors japan, china, north korea which surrounds you..korea 70% products is imported but maintains hostile with neighboring superpowers is different kind of stupidity of korea.

They banned Winnie the pooh because the people online have said he looks like Xi Jinping. And Anna is right South Korea (maybe slightly behind Japan) has great soft power. Like even in the UK there have been more and more Korean restaurants opening. It's interesting how many missionaries founded a lot of the universities in Seoul. What surprised me was when I went to Daegu and seeing the architecture of the Catholic and Presbyterian churches near the traditional medicine area. I heard that Daegu was the first place Catholicism was introduced in Korea.
The episode was so much fun! I was laughing so hard that my pizza flew from my mouth across the table haha. Anna’s sense of humour is amazing, I am in awe of her!! The guests are great, I enjoyed hearing their stories and perspectives. And David - you’re such a great host and a respectful moderator. Lived every minute of this episode. I definitely feel Leigh when she talks about being called to Korea. My husband and I went to Korea last summer, and it was a beautiful experience, and since then, I feel like I’ve been given signs to go back. I want to learn the language, I love the culture, and I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to while I was there because we didn’t have enough time there. I may or may not try living there, but I think I want to make it an annual trip at the very least if possible.

I would love if you guys got Iranians in Korea on this podcast (like Maryam in Korea) because their perspective/motivations are so different (both in good in bad ways!)
Also this never gets talked about but SO many kdramas get dubbed in Persian (Iran's language) because a lot of Iranians have an idolized view of South Korea and watch their media, you could say the same way Koreans idolize America. This is because Iran used to be advanced and progressing rapidly until the revolution in 1979 that destroyed the country and set back everything. All their advancements went to waste and now it's like Iran went back in time. This is literally the opposite of South Korea which used to struggle and but is now advancing extremely well. So basically, South Korea is what Iran should have been today, which is sad for many Iranians and that's why they envy & look at Korea with interest. (I'm Iranian-American and this is just what my immigrant parents explained to me)
@Ameer Qan California is pretty good, I know a lot of Iranians study there (specifically Orange County) Alternatively Canada is a good option if you’re fine with not being in USA. Whatever you choose, good luck! ☺️
In Seoul, the best pizza my friends and I tried was pizza monster. It was the one closest to the NYC pizza taste. Other places put way to much sugar on it 😭😭😭 like NO. When my friends and I were in Seoul studying at yonsei we realized that there is so many opportunity to bring/open western food restaurants. Regarding patriotism, US has this interesting dynamic, although there is patriotism we dont back down from criticizing our own government and institutions because that is intrinsical part of our democracy, in a way that has advanced our process in terms of human and social-economic rights. We still thou have a lot of problems thou😅

If you are bringing South East Asian on, I hope you at least can have 2 to join. I saw lots of street interview where lots of hardship and stereotypes stories for South East Asian living and working in S.Korea. I would love to hear more of their experience and hopefully someday S Korean have a more open mind.

A citizen of the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa can do teaching English jobs in Korea, as Alex said they have the advantage of finding the first job in Korea which is usually teaching English.

My understanding is that Koreans may like some African-American culture but not African-Americans (or other Black folks). This was an intresting topic (and, I do like KPC), but it was White-washed. Yup Thats what I was saying too and I always call that out too and their raycysm. They don’t like me telling the truth. They don’t care about African Americans and so on. Only white Americans. White European Americans.
They don’t even care how Turkey and Ethiopia helped them the most. Turkey helped Korea for 1000’s of years even long before Korean War and Ethiopia also helped Korea one of the most like Turkey. I'm only in the beginning but i want to chime in on eagles: I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I see probably 5 eagles a week where I live (I see them more than 5 times but I think it's just the same 5 over and over hahahhaa😅). If you would like to see them, they are in Cape Breton. They are very big.

yup and even long before Korean war time Turkey has always helped Korea for 1000’s of years. Yet you don’t hear them talking about it and praising Turkey like they praise those yte western countries. They also never mention about Ethiopians because it’s an African country and they don’t care about / for Africans, it’s clear they only care for whhtes and then get mad when I call them raycyst and call out their raycysm.
And I know Korean history and history in general better than they do especially than those young ones. Turkey has helped Korea for over 1000’s of years.

Starbucks in the US has 4 sizes: short, tall, grande , and venti. You never see the two smaller sizes because most Americans order the larger for lattes etc unless they are getting an American or a shot(s).

As a Korean American living here in South Korea, I lead with me being an American when getting an ESL gig or just in general I get a little more respect for it. Being from Los Angeles its even better for me to say that too. lol

I live in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa, and we have the largest population of Indian people outside India, and we also have Dominoes, but I don’t think corn is even an option to choose on the menu…🤷♂️😂 Yet our indigenous African population love mealies (sweet corn on the cob) with a passion, and they also love mealie-meal (ground corn) and cook it with water and eat it as a side dish, with grilled meat or stew - it is even made into a porridge. Maybe indigenous populations in poorer countries have to find a crop that is relatively easy to grow, tasty, filling, nutritious and relatively cheap (the prices of maize goes up and down, but it is popular world-wide and it remains cheaper than such things as meat and eggs) to sustain themselves, and when something is eaten widely in your culture/country, it remains popular even if you become more affluent? 🤷♂️😂🙏💜💜

Funny how the talk about food got so heated up, even more so when you know a lot of that stuff originated in European countries and was assimilated. That's probably part of the reason why Italians, for example, frown upon seeing Korean-style pizzas. 😁 Or the original 'Hamburger' was a simple patty (which we call Frikadelle, by the way) in a bread bun/roll that received an upstyling.

For the question about why some can teach English in Korea over some other countries is the stipulation of the E2 visa which is for teaching English as a foreign language. The visa will only accept native teachers from 7 Countries which is the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
My partners brother was visiting Texas from Korea with his college team. They were so lost until my partner and I joined them, only eating In-and-out or the other burgers there. When we showed up, we got them straight to a Texas BBQ and some Shin Ramyeon that we snuck onto the plane.

I’m British, lived in Korea for a year teaching English, I taught American English words but my school wanted me to talk in my British accent and all Koreans loved my accent, they also wanted me to teach them British English. But I also have a posh British accent.

I am enjoying all of these videos! As a Korean American adoptee, this one was particularly interesting. I would love to know more about Korean adoptees in Korea. Like what made them come back to Korea and stay. What struggles have they faced and what have they've gained. Also have they gotten their Korean citizenship back and how did they do it? I'm also curious if David and Anna have ever met or interacted with Korean adoptees, since you have opportunities to meet more diverse communities.
As a Korean adoptee myself, I would be interested in seeing that topic as well!

As a college student learning Korean in America and planning to visit in a few years, I think this discussion gave me some more insight into the environment you will encounter there. Thanks for the great episode!
I really like the way the interviews are conducted it's both funny and educational without losing the thread of the discussion, and I appreciate the fact that the host is a great listener and asks questions without leading the answer too much, it makes the difference.
42:39 : in order to push the discussion a bit far and deep, it would be interesting to do a part 2 of this subject, with non-white Americans (for ex Asian, Black, Latin, and American Korean born in US). Although the experience of the two guests is very encouraging and I wish them much success in their Korean life, I am not sure that this is really representative of the majority of Americans (all colors included); if we want to take into account the "image" of the American in the imaginary of the koreans. Of course it would be a little bit tricky, but it would be interesting to put in perspective the different experiences (with same passport), and especially it would allow people to have a real idea of what to expect when coming to Korea based on their background, without romanticism (even if each experience is different). In the media and all the Korean podcasts I've seen so far the subject is rarely discussed. Great episode, can't wait for the next one !

Just want to share my journey since its a bit different than what was mentioned in this video. I’m a 26 yr old, US born citizen who’s moving to Korea next month. I have a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Cyber Security but work as a Software Engineer and Adjunct College Professor (both jobs fully remote), so they don’t mind me working from Korea! My income easily sustains me in the US, but I’ve always wanted to live in Korea (most of my friends in highschool/college were korean), so I decided to move to Seoul next month! I know I might be a unique case but figured I’d mention it as another way to get to Korea without having to teach English!

that's wild my husband also works remote for a tech company but they have a limited list of 10 or so states you can live in for tax reasons. I'm kinda shocked they'd let you live in a foreign country.

@@Atropabelopa yeah during the interviewing process I was very particular with which companies i would even talk to. If they didn’t allow for international remote work I wouldn’t bother after the phone interview. It did result in a longer period of time to get that job offer (4 months) but all in all i think it was worth it!

Great show. I was stationed in Daegu with the US Air Force, way back in 1987. It was a great place to be. Great people, who I feel were making a generational transition on to the world stage. The Olympics were coming followed by the World Cup. This exposed the world to Korean culture, music and hospitality. These events moved people’s perceptions of Korea from the “MASH” era into a modern fresh Korea.

OMG! This was a great episode. I laughed so much thanks to Anna. I learned size matters from Anna 😅😅. OAN, it is true we Americans love to talk to anyone, especially if we see something and make eye contact. No matter what it is. Rain, snow, usually outfit. I just had a conversation with my delivery guy, Lol. I am looking forward to the next episode. P.S. I am a Black American woman, and I am learning Korean with Duolingo (it's slow going) so I can understand the language when I visit one day. Plus, understand Kdramas and KPOP.

Living in Seoul as a non-American white person was really funny because as I speak fluent English with no strong accent, every Korean I met immediately assumed I was American and many were actually really confused when I told them I wasn't. But this has also happened to me in Europe, a French man started yelling at me at a restaurant in Italy because he assumed I was American and thus thought I was being loud and had no manners even though I wasn't louder than my friends who had stronger accents in their English... it's funny now but I was offended not only because he was rude but also prejudiced towards Americans, even though I'm sure sometimes the stereotypes are true 😅 funny thing is I've never even been to the US 😂 but no native US citizen has ever mistaken me for a native speaker so I've only heard it from people from non-English speaking countries

As an international relations student i almost choke when he said American is a superpower..this people is living in 90s i guess...if you look through IR students view n world leader america is collapsing be it dollar, be it economy, or be it culturally which I don’t think they have...the only superpower rising like at max in this decade is China.. its the bitter truth....America’s superpower is now studied in history now...because every country is realising how cruel America is...America could be hero for south korea but its villain for most of the countries Vietnam, iran, iraq, Afghanistan,venezuala etc...the problem with korea is too dependent on America but maintaining hostility with neighbors japan, china, north korea which surrounds you..korea 70% products is imported but maintains hostile with neighboring superpowers is different kind of stupidity of korea.

They banned Winnie the pooh because the people online have said he looks like Xi Jinping. And Anna is right South Korea (maybe slightly behind Japan) has great soft power. Like even in the UK there have been more and more Korean restaurants opening. It's interesting how many missionaries founded a lot of the universities in Seoul. What surprised me was when I went to Daegu and seeing the architecture of the Catholic and Presbyterian churches near the traditional medicine area. I heard that Daegu was the first place Catholicism was introduced in Korea.
The episode was so much fun! I was laughing so hard that my pizza flew from my mouth across the table haha. Anna’s sense of humour is amazing, I am in awe of her!! The guests are great, I enjoyed hearing their stories and perspectives. And David - you’re such a great host and a respectful moderator. Lived every minute of this episode. I definitely feel Leigh when she talks about being called to Korea. My husband and I went to Korea last summer, and it was a beautiful experience, and since then, I feel like I’ve been given signs to go back. I want to learn the language, I love the culture, and I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to while I was there because we didn’t have enough time there. I may or may not try living there, but I think I want to make it an annual trip at the very least if possible.

I would love if you guys got Iranians in Korea on this podcast (like Maryam in Korea) because their perspective/motivations are so different (both in good in bad ways!)
Also this never gets talked about but SO many kdramas get dubbed in Persian (Iran's language) because a lot of Iranians have an idolized view of South Korea and watch their media, you could say the same way Koreans idolize America. This is because Iran used to be advanced and progressing rapidly until the revolution in 1979 that destroyed the country and set back everything. All their advancements went to waste and now it's like Iran went back in time. This is literally the opposite of South Korea which used to struggle and but is now advancing extremely well. So basically, South Korea is what Iran should have been today, which is sad for many Iranians and that's why they envy & look at Korea with interest. (I'm Iranian-American and this is just what my immigrant parents explained to me)
@Ameer Qan California is pretty good, I know a lot of Iranians study there (specifically Orange County) Alternatively Canada is a good option if you’re fine with not being in USA. Whatever you choose, good luck! ☺️
In Seoul, the best pizza my friends and I tried was pizza monster. It was the one closest to the NYC pizza taste. Other places put way to much sugar on it 😭😭😭 like NO. When my friends and I were in Seoul studying at yonsei we realized that there is so many opportunity to bring/open western food restaurants.
Regarding patriotism, US has this interesting dynamic, although there is patriotism we dont back down from criticizing our own government and institutions because that is intrinsical part of our democracy, in a way that has advanced our process in terms of human and social-economic rights. We still thou have a lot of problems thou😅

If you are bringing South East Asian on, I hope you at least can have 2 to join. I saw lots of street interview where lots of hardship and stereotypes stories for South East Asian living and working in S.Korea. I would love to hear more of their experience and hopefully someday S Korean have a more open mind.

A citizen of the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa can do teaching English jobs in Korea, as Alex said they have the advantage of finding the first job in Korea which is usually teaching English.

My own story of coming to Korea is similar to Leigh's story. It was such a smooth process and I know it was meant for me to be here.
Thank you, David for making a commitment to have a more diverse "America" panel. Because, my understanding is that the "Koreans like America" is limited to White folks. My understanding is that Koreans may like some African-American culture but not African-Americans (or other Black folks). This was an intresting topic (and, I do like KPC), but it was White-washed. I'm only in the beginning but i want to chime in on eagles: I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I see probably 5 eagles a week where I live (I see them more than 5 times but I think it's just the same 5 over and over hahahhaa😅). If you would like to see them, they are in Cape Breton. They are very big.

You're right. Turkey were the first to send military help. I knew Ethiopia as well they have their flags up at the UN Memorial Park in Busan.

They also never mention about Ethiopians because it’s an African country and they don’t care about / for Africans, it’s clear they only care for whhtes and then get mad when I call them raycyst and call out their raycysm.

Starbucks in the US has 4 sizes: short, tall, grande , and venti. You never see the two smaller sizes because most Americans order the larger for lattes etc unless they are getting an American or a shot(s).
Me ordering the tall most everytime in the states 😅

I live in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa, and we have the largest population of Indian people outside India, and we also have Dominoes, but I don’t think corn is even an option to choose on the menu…🤷♂️😂 Yet our indigenous African population love mealies (sweet corn on the cob) with a passion, and they also love mealie-meal (ground corn) and cook it with water and eat it as a side dish, with grilled meat or stew - it is even made into a porridge. Maybe indigenous populations in poorer countries have to find a crop that is relatively easy to grow, tasty, filling, nutritious and relatively cheap (the prices of maize goes up and down, but it is popular world-wide and it remains cheaper than such things as meat and eggs) to sustain themselves, and when something is eaten widely in your culture/country, it remains popular even if you become more affluent? 🤷♂️😂🙏💜💜

For the question about why some can teach English in Korea over some other countries is the stipulation of the E2 visa which is for teaching English as a foreign language. The visa will only accept native teachers from 7 Countries which is the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

My partners brother was visiting Texas from Korea with his college team. They were so lost until my partner and I joined them, only eating In-and-out or the other burgers there. When we showed up, we got them straight to a Texas BBQ and some Shin Ramyeon that we snuck onto the plane.
