THE FIA is doing whatever it takes to make F1 to look slower and slower. The way they broadcast with cameras following the cars close up all the time, the lack of high speed corners, tilkodromes elbowing. Almost ZERO static cameras. Just to name a few.
@@qvor1996 That may be true but there's no way you watched enough older broadcasts to know that they had wider angle shots that zoomed OUT rather than in when cars passed by and did not laser follow the center as they do now. They still paid the bills with less hyper stable zoomed in shots. As it is now 70% or more of the broadcast during the race you're basically watching a car being rotated around on it's center axis, so there is no sense of speed to the viewer. Watch something around 2010 or earlier and the sense of speed that you would get as if you were at the race IS there, regardless of it being a tilkdrome circuit. The viewer hardly ever sees the trackside flora and architecture and landscape. The broadcast now almost always switches camera immediately as the car goes right as it clears there's no sense of speed nor does it give the viewer the incredible directional change that F1 cars are able to do. The odd replay may show it. Maybe it's the newer camera stablization gyros or image stablization in the lenses, rigs, etc but the broadcast is not as visceral as it was during the last years of the non-aspirated era. In addition to the rigs, watch the older broadcasts and how some of the trackside cameras were mounted very very high on telescoping camera platforms above the track, they were able to zoom out and pan high and along the track with the showing the incredible closure rates, speeds, and deceleration of F1 cars. Along with the rigs the HALO has taken away some of the older "incar" viewing angles that were less wide so again, the sense of speed and directional change is lost. Always I see people comment saying they fall asleep now during the race broadcast and people commenting on less noise from the cars, honestly I think the races are JUST as GOOD as it was during the NA years it's just the ultra camera angles and hyper stable focus angles in the Liberty age has made the races on TV way way WAY more boring.

Was very much the same at the end of the Group A/early WRC era as well in the late 90's. On tarmac, the screaming 2.0L F2 cars were lighter and could be quicker than the Gp.A/WRC cars. The performances of Panizzi, Bugalski, Loeb, for Peugeot and Citroen were capable of winning entire events outright. 9:16 I have to disagree here I hated the wider and high downforce F1 cars, I prefer the 2011 models for their lightweight and agile look. My wish is for F1 to return to 2011 specifications with louder engines, retaining current ground effect regulations for 2026. Imagine the RB19's beauty resembling the 2011 RB7 size.
I agree, I loved the way those cars would dart around. The cars we have now are good but they aren't as impressive to watch to me even if not comparing engine sound. They also continue to try and fix the lack of ability to pass etc. but I think in 2011-2013 it wasn't really that bad and better than it is now.
Super Formula was getting very close to F1 after ground effect was introduced in 2022. For 2024, the chassis has been modified, and the cars will be a little slower, so as not to affect the tires with this high downforce load.
It's worth remembering that there was a budget cap at the time, and the only teams that were still tied to it were Marussia and Caterham who were bound to it when they entered the series in 2010. they built their cars on less than a third of the other teams.

The 2020 Mercedes broke track records at some circuits and F1 was very quick to point this out. What they didn’t mention was that the records that they broke were often times set by cars that were 15+ years older, had skinnier tires with grooves in them, and skinnier cars overall. Give a 2004 car the tires that are just as wide as the current ones without and grooves, and allow them to make the car 2 meters wide and just watch what kind of lap times they throw down. It won’t even be close.
It would need to be the small rims wide tyres of recent. The big rims ones are just heavier and more cumbersome. That width of the tyres does seem to hold the cars back on the straights. 1050 hp now, and they are not even close to setting top speed records even with DRS. To me it seems way too much weight is being mandated for the hybrid PUs, and too little energy deployment allowed. On top of that, reliability is now way too important for competition.
@@Cloxxki The width of the tires will increase rolling resistance slightly but I think it’s got more to do with the huge rear wings. Those older cars had fairly large rear wings but also had many small aero devices and in my opinion probably had far less drag.

Maybe its nostagia from an era I only barely remember from being a young teenager but those 2014-2016 cars arent as ugly as people like to say. I love the proportions. And the 2011-2017 GP2 is just sublime. If I was to draw a race car, it would look like that.
Interesting topic. IMO we should have an F2 that runs a low budget car under F1 rules, they should race the same tracks on the same weekends, and when an F1 team starts tanking any F2 car that has one of the top 26 times should be promoted up to the F1 grid for a race.
To be fair, the limiting performance factor in F1 has been the drivers since the 70s (mostly not skill but safety, although good luck controlling a car pulling 10g in turns!), so it'd be pretty easy to make something faster for a lot less money and unlimited regs if a driver didn't need to survive the experience. They pushed the restrictions a bit too far in 2014, but I reckon within our lifetimes (if only just) we'll see driverless cars where the aero can really be pushed, at which point we'll see insane laptimes.
To be fair the lap time Leclerc set at Monaco can’t be compared to that of Schumacher as the track had be re profiled twice, both times making it 2 seconds faster. Theoretically that 2000 time on the same track would be in the 15’s
On the topic of racing not being everything to be the pinnacle of Motorsport … I still vote that f1 doubles their season and does half races as Miata races for the most chaotic close competitive racing we could ever wish for
Nurturing 1995, European Gramd Prix. Jean Denis Delitraz in the Pacific sets a time in qualifying that would have put him 22nd on the F3000 (F2) grid. This is before the 107% rule so a bit of an outlier. Not sure if Deletraz was actually the reason for the 107% rules introduction the following year.
Overhated season. If the cars were loud and looked a bit nicer, most people wouldn't mind that they were slow because they provided better racing and were visually hard to drive. F1 Fans love the difficult cars from the 80s or before despite them being slow. It's the reason i like 2014 because the cars were visually difficult for the drivers and we miss that nowadays with the current car. 2014 was maybe too slow but I think 2016 was the sweet spot, in terms of speed and raceability.
2014 cars were not only ugly, but also too slow. 2012 cars were uglier but faster. I honestly am fond of 2016 cars, but it didn't really suit me. 2017 cars were great IMO. And if only they didn't have a wider size, it would have been my most favourite, not 2012.
80s…slow? What are you watching? They used grenade engines cranked up to like 1200hp in cars that weighed way less than modern ones. Slow my ass, it’s how Senna became the speed demon he was.
Man its sad that rio haryanto on last in f1 for a few months. as an indonesian, it was very sad day for me when i heard rio haryanto is not gonna be in f1 anymore
It honestly is no rocket science that the 2014 cars were going to be slower in cornering speed and lap times, considering the aerodynamic concept being specifically about having less downforce. Additionally, there was a 100kg limit of fuel to use during a race, so aerodynamic upgrades were rarely fitted to get additional speed through corners, rather to have less drag and therefore less fuel consumption. That's also how the top speed records of 370 kph came to fruition despite having cars that are now about 150hp weaker than today. As for looks, apart from the noses, I quite liked the look of the cars, and we saw the remnants of the nose regulations until the end of 2021. As for the sound, that is highly subjective as well. The cars still have the same engine, but with a new engine formula that was set for having a 100kg fuel limit (as to later 105kg and now even 110kg), of course the power will be lower and the sound will not be as aggressive as it used to be with the V8s. However, I always called the V8's "air pumps" for a reason as they only had around 750 BHP. Compare it with today's engines which have up to 900 BHP without the Hybrid part, this is insane. I'm not sad that the V8's are gone, quite the contrary. And although yes, the wider, more aerodynamical cars are a lot faster, it has now gotten to a point where the F1 cars became the size of a truck. You now have 2m wide cars which are 5.5m long. If you compare that to the older 2004 cars where they were 1.8m wide and a meter shorter, the dimensions look similar, but it's just a much smaller, nimbler car, and I'm happy enough that F1 are going back into the direction of having smaller cars again because that will make the racing better once again, especially for narrower circuits.
What was worse than the 2014 changes were the 2017 changes adding downforce to the cars and making them the chonky boys they are now The racing suffered massively. Say what you want about the 2014 regs but the races were pretty exciting to watch, especially Bahrain which is an all time classic
Really need to point out Leclerc record f2 lap around monaco compared to 2000 Schumacher.. the track layout is different.. around the swimming pool and rascasse is now shorter than back in 2000.. not comparing apples with apples
Alonso in 2014: damn GP2 engines are faster than F1 hybrids? i'll tell my team about it, so that they can make the F1 hybrid as fast if not faster than the GP2 engine Alonso in 2015: *gets GP2 engine
The modern cars look cool, but wow they look huge. Look at the 2014 and 2009 cars vs 3023. Even 2010 to 2013 looks so so much better even if they're longer
Honestly I don't think the "speed" aspect really mattered that much. For the first half of the season it was fun to see drivers fighting traction with the higher torque engines and lower downforce. Apart from the look and sound the real criminal of this era were the high deg tyres. Sure "top" drivers can get around this issue but watching Perez nurse his tyres to do one stop less. Vs Max or Lewis do an extra stop but drive like a man possessed is no comparison in entertainment factor.

You failed to consider that 2014 is literally the first revolution in Formula 1. It is the first time it transitioned to full speced hybrid power trains. that's why the regulations are so strict and the cars so slow - its the first season of a new F1 era, which ultimately led to the pinnacle of F1 engineering and performance in 2019-2020, with the fastest ever f1 cars ever produced - the Mercedes W11 and the Ferrari SF90.
Non ground effect cars are better if they are narrowers. Wider 2000s cars will be seconds slower than the the 2020 cars
@@foxctocofxk8509 Please explain how. Even if they didn’t increase the width of the car itself the wider tires without grooves by themselves would make them seconds faster than the 2020 cars.
@@JG54206 slicks would make them faster, whereas making them wider would make them overweight and worsen handling
Love from Lithuania 🇱🇹
finally, the sequel to formula 1
I really love the 2010’s and the way those cars look….
And my god I never knew about this, but I really just fell in love with the Dallara GP2/11
Thats why that bloody black fella Hamilton came from F2 to suddenly beat the champion of Alonso
The only 2 ways to make me follow F1 again would be 1) bring back the V10 engines and the technical rules of 2004 and 2) bring F1 back to free tv.
They sound 1000 times better for a season aswell
2026 is gonna be very risky with even more hybrid electrical power
I know some of you clown Rio Haryanto but his podium for Caterham team means a lot for us Indonesian.
He also won several times with Campos and finished 4th in a car that should've been out of top 5.
Only Muslims would remember that. But we don't.
@@gerardkhachaturyan4814 More like Indonesian people in general. However, he was the first Muslim to win a GP2 race and actually competed in F1 despite, well, you know. So, of course that means a lot to us.

Schumacher's pole and Leclerc's lap at Monaco aren't really comparable; the track configuration was different (not by much, but still).
I remember when it was stated live on Air in around 2019 that F2 was more exciting than F1, - Anthony Davidson.
2000 Monaco and 2017 Monaco are two different tracks...
Yes. It was modified in 2003 and remained like that till 2017.
@@LTLGamer1 no it was still modified couple of times after that. Widening of Tobacco, refurbishing the inside barrier at swimming pool, curbs at Saint Devote. Even small touches like these can make a huge difference
Maybe its nostagia from an era I only barely remember from being a young teenager but those 2014-2016 cars arent as ugly as people like to say. I love the proportions. And the 2011-2017 GP2 is just sublime. If I was to draw a race car, it would look like that.
Good old Merc era!
Far better than any of this dark Red Bull era.
I like how the captions translate "Caterham" to "Krums"...
4:34 the goat leclerc😎
Alonso said it!!!
RIP Jules.

Caterham steering wheel looks sick
Overhated season. If the cars were loud and looked a bit nicer, most
people wouldn't mind that they were slow because they provided better racing and were visually hard to drive.
I wouldn't mind 2016 cars either. However 2014 cars were too slow and looked ugly as hell so I say no thank you to that years cars.
it seems you're a Mercedes fan,
2014 cars were not only ugly, but also too slow. 2012 cars were uglier but faster.
I honestly am fond of 2016 cars, but it didn't really suit me. 2017 cars were great IMO.
And if only they didn't have a wider size, it would have been my most favourite, not 2012.
@@birandkoray I was more invested in the midfield supporting Force India at the time
80s…slow? What are you watching? They used grenade engines cranked up to like 1200hp in cars that weighed way less than modern ones. Slow my ass, it’s how Senna became the speed demon he was.

Hi, what are the background music you used on the video?
Rio Haryanto spotted
When the "GP2 Engine" wasn't an insult 💀💀💀
They should then bring in a lemans style races with GP2/F2 and run both grids at once
That leclerc f2 car was so fuckin beautiful..shame they get rid of that generation of cars
How the hell did Caterham think that first nose would work?? It’s a knob with a wall surrounding it at the attachment!
Man its sad that rio haryanto on last in f1 for a few months. as an indonesian, it was very sad day for me when i heard rio haryanto is not gonna be in f1 anymore
monaco was different in the schumacher days. the swiming pool section is different
Unlike some things in life, smaller and shorter is more fun regarding F1. Especially weight is a big factor.
I just want them to show stationary camera. It works great.
4:40 please note that track layout was different in 2000 so this is factually incorrect
It's going to be the same story with the regulation changes in 2026.
thank you mercedes for pushing for this regulations
Merc pushed but everyone else agreed to go along with them.
STOP clicking your fingers at us!!
What was worse than the 2014 changes were the 2017 changes adding downforce to the cars and making them the chonky boys they are now
The racing suffered massively.

The modern cars look cool, but wow they look huge. Look at the 2014 and 2009 cars vs 3023. Even 2010 to 2013 looks so so much better even if they're longer
GP2 CAR!! GP2 ENGINE!
leclercs 2017 time was faster because in 2000 the final sector was completely different
The graph in 1:33 is almost shocking...
Didn't most of the Marussia sponsors cut ties after the jules crash??? Also vergne was dropped too quickly
4:38 Sry but different track layot in Monaco 2000 vs 2017. Facts. ;)

Wow... the 2014 F1 regs really casts the current F1 regulations in a new light.
Again, 2014 regulations led to the fastest F1 cars ever made. Like ever.

CanAm unlimited rules were faster than F1, forcing the change to 3 liter engines. The series also paid more prize money.
It was faster than ***A*** formula 1 car. Not faster than Formula 1 cars though.
Monaco 2000 f1 vs 2017 gp2 (f2) well there is a 17 year gap in development, but yeah. The 2014 rule changes where shait as hell!
Of the modern area, 2012 was the closest fight, 2018 was the best ran year for the sport, 2020 spec cars were the peak of F1, 2021 was the most controversial year, 2022 spec cars are meh imo
2021 was a great year aside from abu dhabi
There was a lot of dodgy stuff going on in 2021. Spa, Saudi, obvs abu dhabi, the cost cap aftermath, poor race directing throughout the year

Maldonada was the only one to win an F1 race, though. In a Williams. Battling Alonso in a Ferrari.
Stars did align but he was never really slow, I think? Will SAR ever win a race? Did anyone with 22 with races to start his F1 careeer ever did?
The 2014 regulations are universally regarded.
Great video but that click noise for text and transitions is extremely irritating.
Well the good news is that F1 and the FIA is adamant on repeating the same mistake with the new regulations for 2026
Not really, modern hybrid tech is far more developed than it was in 2014. And even then all of the issues of the 2014 cars were solved in time. Also keep in mind that h
Wait.. so FIA thought.. let's improve F1: remove downforce. Make tires harder. Make the cars heavier. Make them sound bad.
What.. the fu** did they expect to happen??
