*Sony Xperia Z Ultra Review* There are phones, and then there are BIG phones. And then there is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. With a 6.4 inch screen, will this behemoth of a phone cast a shadow over the rest of the competition? ***** attempts to wrap his hands (and head) around the huge Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
If you want to use this as a phone you need two things: A fanny pack and a bluetooth earpiece. Fashionable will be the last thing people think when they see you.
i never liked very big phones a friend of mine bought this one. once i held it in my hands and used it for a couple of minutes, i realized IT'S INCREDIBLE! I WANT IT!
Anyone watching in 2018? Oh how the 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra was viewed back then, when even 5-inches was considered already large in retrospect. How times have changed....
Sarik Rana How are you enjoying your phone? Is it too big? Are there times where you can't sit because it's too big and you have to take it off your pants? What about the no flash? I'd love one that big.
Cesar Antonio If you want a BIG phone, then go for the Z Ultra. It has the killer specs, the screen, the water-proofing, you want. I never carry the phone in my pant pockets, only in my jacket or shirt pocket. You get used to size very fast. Flash is only a problem if you take a lot of evening/night shots, in which case its better to have a dedicated camera. The video recording is excellent. I manly use it for multimedia, gaming purposes.
Love my 6 year old sony xperia z ultra..what a gorgeous phone. The only thing it lacked was a good camera, flash and good audio output. Although I use it as side phone.
People seem to love or hate this phone, very few in between. People that love smaller phones like iphone 5, hate this phone. People that love bigger phones, love this phone. I absolutely love this phone... It's beautiful. The size is awesome. I don't have two squint to look at a 4" screen, try to see what is written.
Incredible display, very thin, high resolution and ppi, high resolution back and front camera, all of sony's apps and xreality, as well as serving as a tablet/phone/phablet, as well as many more incredible specs. I would buy this over the note 3 any day in my opinion. Hopefully it goes for $500 or less on sale.
This thing was my first phone. I found it recently while sorting through my storage and this thing was so much ahead of its time. I charged it and it booted up (for 5 minutes before it completely died and now refuses to charge), and man was it a major throwback. With a minutely better camera and perhaps a newer chipset, it could legitimately compete with midrange phones released in 2022. Good old days!
You will not be disappointed with this phone, it is spectacular. and you can bring up full webpages and read easy... the numbers and keys are easy to press... and the voice recognition is spot on.
I would actually want this simply so I don't have to buy a separate phone and tablet and it should fit mostly in your pocket unlike a full on tablet. I rarely talk on my phone so it would be great for games browsing and messaging.
I rarely ever comment on stuff but your videos are awesome! Very informative and technical but keep you very interested throughout. Think at the moment the Xperia Z1 is the best option. Looks almost the same, but a little smaller. Keep the good videos up!
Looks like I might go for this as my next upgrade. I had assumed I would go from my Note 2 to a Note 3 (4 is out of my price range) but I have found that I tend to use my phone as a media device more than as an actual phone.
I think I wouldn't mind a bigger screen size for the same reasons as you, but the Z Ultra is quite extreme don't you think? I could get used to mandatory two-handed use, but at the end of the day, I'm carrying my phone in my pocket. The Z Ultra looks quite uncomfortable even when standing/walking, and there's no way you're sitting down with it in your pocket. I've played around with my friend's Note 2, and I think a Note-sized phone would be the max for me, and the Nexus 6 is really pushing it.
smashbro5 Its actually not as bad as you'd think i picked one up the other day and i love it.. The only thing i have against it is that without the battery saving modes you can watch the percentages drop over and over through the day. it does last a full day of work with mild/excessive texting and mild media viewing. its heavy in your pocket so you're going to not going to forget that its there. the experience boarders on magical. minus sony's boring UI
+Brandon Lee Well less than a year on and my Sony Z Ultra has broken. I did nothing to it. It was not dropped or bashed. I tried to use it when I got to work and the screen was unresponsive. I looked closely and noticed a hair line crack going across the screen. This completely killed the device. Sony are not interested and apparently it is a known problem that is quite widespread. I have replaced it with an LG G4 and will not be buying from Sony again.
Since i bought My Sony Xperia Z Ultra back in 2013, its still look new all port seals are still intact, still waterproof all buttons are crisp. no scratches or dents thanks to tempered glass and Devilcase. No lags & glitches, no dead pixels. When you really loved something it will last,2020 still loving my Sony Xperia Z Ultra! :).
I have it and don't even think about the flash if you like taking photo's then maybe invest in a dslr but other than that it's a great phone even in 2015
Went to the mall yesterday and tried this phone. I know its not something you can put in your pocket everywhere but its great for a second phone and have a feel of a tablet. I like it.
Looking back to 2013 and 2014 these huge smartphones as the ultra and mega (samsung) never got to be the standard... we are sticking with the 5 inches ones
I HAD THIS ONE! About 3 years after it came out 🤣🤣 I loved it It felt so premium every time I used it I remember the screen was very intense and punchy!! Only downside it's delicate if the screen cracks It can't be used anymore :(
Yes sir, it did end up going this way. They have settled around 6.6-6.8 inches now for the majority of them. A 6.1-6.2 inch screen is considered *compact*. How times have changed. P.S. - I personally find 6.1-6.2 as the sweet spot
Same here. I hate the smart comments though, "oh, dude, I thought it was a tablet. It's a phone?? Wow, that is huge for a phone..." Lol whatever, this phone was my choice. If they don't like the phone, they don't have to buy it. No need to insult my beautiful phone though..
I own the Sony Z Ultra myself and I only have medium sized hands. I bought gloves before in Canada and I was told by the leather gloves store that my hands were small! It is a great phone that u can use with one hand and fits in suit coat pockets or jacket pockets. No it does not fit in blue jeans pockets but not everyone wears blue jeans around the world. Blue jeans are too hot for people to wear in Asia in the summer with the humidity here. The Sony Z Ultra has a fantastic screen, great sound with the Walkman app and it is very fast in daily use. The camera is good enough for family photos and it is waterproof. Waterproof phones are a must in countries that have heavy rainfall. Overall the best smart phone I have owned.
Im using a galaxy note 8 as my phone and i love the size, for me this would be a step down in size and i would miss the 8inch screen and spen. Although the specs temp me i might hold on and see what the note 3 has to offer.
Soon as I get a job I'll be getting one of these!! Can't wait! And I had to make sure it would fit in the pockets of my school trousers too, just about fits!!
The Z Ultra is phabulous! The size is what I wanted - we older folk like to see what is going on. I use a bluetooth earbud, so there is no size issue when used as a phone. Carrying it? My passport (identical width) and it occupy the left inside pocket of a sport-jacket perfectly. The weight is enough to tell me that I have a good piece of equipment, yet light enough to wear. Since I have a tablet and a camera, the lack of a flash was not an issue for me - I try to take pictures without a flash when possible because of the nature of the flash. I have paired a bluetooth keyboard (Logitech) with the Z Ultra, and it is heaven. Watching a video on it is amazingly enjoyable. The case I have for it is very sleek, strong and protective, and adds so little to the phone in terms of dimensions. I haven't found a dedicated stand for it, though the logitech keyboard serves nicely, but at home, I have it set up on a china-plate holder (with a little tweaking) and it does the trick. As a phone, it has a great sound. It is stylish. Yes, I am a confessed zealot.
6,5 and 7 inch screens are not standard today. People are missing out the form factor. The phones now using 19,5:9 ratios other than the old ones using 16:9 like the sony here. To come to an point a modern 6,8 inch screen is much more a 5,5 inch 16:9 screen with no bezels. The phone is stretched but most of the content not. Thats why i have and hate the black bars while watching youtube videos. Its like the bezels never left 😂
I came from apple, samsung, and windows. And I have to say, the Sony xperia z series has never ceased to outstand me. Whether it was because they always had the most ram, or the best camera, idk. I think I finally struck home with the z3 though, z ultra would've been nice, but I wanted a flagship. Notes and their TouchWizzes can go ie in a hole.
I've got experience with both but am currently using my Note 3 for everyday use. The Ultra is a great phone with same processor specs as the Note 3 but no removable battery or USB 3.0, and I also like having a stylus on board. Couple of other things that might detract from the Ultra like the speakerphone and camera being subjectively off base relative to the Note 3. If those things are not a big deal to you and you would rather have the bigger screen, then the Ultra is a fantastic phone. Also, if you don't like using phone cases and you are sensitive to how a phone looks without one, then the Sony has a leg up on that. Hope that helps.
Its probably a good device and good for watching videos and gaming, but imo for general usage/phone duties, it will be a pain more often than not, no removable battery, no dedicated s pen, very average camera. i would go the note 3 or 4 , but good luck what ever you pick.
6.5 inches smartphone in 16:9 was really huge back then with Xperia Z Ultra but here comes Sony Xperia 1 and Sony Xperia 1 II (mark 2) with same 6.5 inches screen size but in better handy 21:9 aspect ratio. Who's watching this in 2020? 🙂
+ℱirstName LastName Same bro 3 yrs. and 3 months I own this to be exact, but I use my s7 edge as my daily driver, I just can't sell or dispose this phone because I grew with it...
This is my dream tablet, it is easier and more elegant to carry arround than a 7" tablet but funny if used as phone. One smart but simple thing was the soft buttons in shorter side even in landscape mode, this perhaps required 2 lines in programming code yet omitted by most other companies!
I love BIG Phones. But there are a few reasons why I think that I would hold off on getting this device. After a few months of use, the screen gets rough. In the areas of the screen which are swiped by your fingers most often - the screen does not feel smooth. The speakers are terrible. This isn't the biggest problem for me, as most of the time I use my headphones, but for someone who listens to music through speakers of their device, I would strongly recommend investing into a proper set of headphones.
The oleophobic coating on mine came off within a few weeks though I haven't noticed any roughness on the screen. I am however tempted to take the screen protector off because it scratches pretty easily and the glass underneath is pretty good unfortunately sony went and baked it on so removing it would be a pain. The speaker however is pretty good quality, in my opinion, just too quiet to use in almost any situation but easily solved with some nice bluetooth speakers if you want to be playing audio aloud.
Yeah I have this phone, and it doesn't need a flash cause it has technology that takes light and dark pics and combines them to look perfect and auto adjusts.. and I still can use flashlight features from the front, and use it as a scanner and measuring tools
Excellent review. Having come from the original Galaxy Tab P7100 7 inch tablet to watch media, I now watch most of my media on my Note 2. Going from 7 inches to 5 inches is not a downgrade as you might think. It works really well and is more convenient to cart around. . So, I have compared my Note 2 with a friends Note 3. No visible difference. So no point in going to a Note 3, If I went for a Z Ultra it would be for media and replace my Note 2 and I'm trying to figure out whether the extra inch is better or worse. There is no way I would use it as a phone as much too big but would certainly use it as a tablet. A device to keep in mind ....
You gotta remember this phone is 16:9, so the screen is less tall, but wider when held normally...if that makes sense. This phone is still one of the biggest screens ever on a smartphone, even ignoring bezels. With the bezels, obviously its colossal compared to the minimal bezeled phones of today (2019). TLDR, this phone's 6.4 inch screen is larger in area than the modern phone with a 6.4 inch screen (typically ~18:9 or in some cases even 21:9).
You might say what you think, but I think the size doesn't matter at all. You may call it a phablet and it might be the trend of future all-in-one gadgets. I just loved my Sony Xperia Z Ultra no matter what others might say.
A flash isn't just for 'enhancing' pictures taken using the camera, it also doubles as a torch light. Perhaps the HUGH screen is luminescent enough. Are you happy with the device?
I'm one of the few that loves big phones. The bigger the better for me, which is why I use the Note 3. If the Galaxy Mega was more up to date with specs, I'd be buying that one in a heartbeat.
Wow, it's already 2024! Can't believe it's been 11 years since this phone was released. It's crazy to see how far things have come. Back then, I thought an AnTuTu score of 50,000 was mind-blowing! But now, with scores hitting over 2 million, the performance difference is like night and day. One of the legendary flagships of its time, the Sony Z Ultra, used to be my dream phone. Now, I’m more than happy with the performance of the Samsung S24 Ultra. Hopefully, we’ll see some real innovation in gadgets again soon because in recent years, it hasn’t been as groundbreaking as the days of the S4 Zoom, Samsung Note Edge, or the S8-S10+ era, when Samsung was really pushing the boundaries.
If you get this phone, buy the SBH52 unit too. You can keep the phablet in your pocket or bag and use the mini Bluetooth thingy as the phone. Conversation with people goes like this: - How small is that phone? Can I take a look? - You mean THIS?(showing the real phone) - Holy!..

@@binchunsu z ultra is bigger than mate 20 x
@@Vshzn that's because the bezels on it are huge. Most 6.4 inch phones nowadays are almost bezel-less.

z ultra, ive baught one and I just want to say that I couldn't pick a fault!
me
"Better handy" and smaller. 6.5 on a 21:9 feels like 5.5
That is THE SEXIEST PHONE I've ever seen. :D
Thanks thought so too
Thanks thought so too
How bout now?
watching this video on 2014 before i buy it, and now I'm watching this video again (2016) using z ultra. my z ultra still work fine after 2 years.
Had mine for 3 years bro; not a scratch on it; working great. Still more powerful and stylish than the stuff theyre bringing out these days.
+ℱirstName LastName Same bro 3 yrs. and 3 months I own this to be exact, but I use my s7 edge as my daily driver, I just can't sell or dispose this phone because I grew with it...
do you have any non asian friends lol
This is my dream tablet, it is easier and more elegant to carry arround than a 7" tablet but funny if used as phone. One smart but simple thing was the soft buttons in shorter side even in landscape mode, this perhaps required 2 lines in programming code yet omitted by most other companies!
Men should start carrying purses.
ustfu 😂👍
What a badass intro, keep it up guys :D
TOP GEAR! My friend... You're a legend
Bought 2, me and my wife, lovely phone, we even video while we r in the water park! Simply lovely
This guy really gives unbiased reviews!
I own an iPhone 5 but there's a lot of amazing Windows and Android phones. This is one of the most brilliant and elegant looking devices I've seen.
I'd say the Xperia Z1 looks even better with metal frame...
Well now in 2018 we can say that it became the standard. However the bezels shrinked so the devices are much smaller.
I am more n more convinced this will be my first phablet....truthfully its nice to see a differnt brand withoit the typical SAMSUNG/APPLE humdrum
A flash isn't just for 'enhancing' pictures taken using the camera, it also doubles as a torch light. Perhaps the HUGH screen is luminescent enough. Are you happy with the device?
dude awesome review. im actually thinking about buying this phone now lool. what is your background instrumental called? fits the review so well
Love this tab phone! Fits in all my pockets just fine due to its thinness. Does what its meant to do perfectly... Niche device indeed
I'm one of the few that loves big phones. The bigger the better for me, which is why I use the Note 3. If the Galaxy Mega was more up to date with specs, I'd be buying that one in a heartbeat.
This is the best intro I've seen on this channel... I love it haha
Excellent review... I just hope it WON'T become the next standard. A good 4.7 to 5 inch screen device is good enough for the "standard" market.
This phone is the best phone i have ever seen. It has all the things i want and more! :-D I will defedently buy one. And great review btw.
I have this device, the review is spot on. It's a great device.
If you get this phone, buy the SBH52 unit too. You can keep the phablet in your pocket or bag and use the mini Bluetooth thingy as the phone. Conversation with people goes like this:
- How small is that phone? Can I take a look?
- You mean THIS?(showing the real phone)
- Holy!..
I remember i used to love this channel, i downloaded the app just to read tech news and watch review videos to kill time
Hi. Thanks for the review. Good job and keep going. Could you please share the info what camera do you use to shoot reviews ?
You just earned a subcriber ! Very imformitive video... well done!
I like the review. Good stuff Mang
I didn't really grasp the humongous size until 8:14, that really gives me the perspective
Dang, I might get this just because I think it would be really cool to show to my friends and doing tasks may be easier to do as well.
