Huge props to Jay for sitting down with Chris to discuss this massive news. He could have chosen any of the world’s cycling media but didn’t. #fivepointeight
First, Congratulations Jay, it’s been awesome to get to watch your rise! Chris, I’m speechless. I saw the hour length and thought “am I really going to make it through?”. But, I’m not only going to finish, I’m going to watch it again! Questions were superb, and Jay is so sincere /relatable in his answers! ❤ 🙏
Chris, you are the consummate objective personality interviewing the consummate scientific sportsman hero. You manage to bring out the genuine motivation and drive of this genius athlete who is problem solving his way to world’s highest level of human fitness and sportsmanship. Thank you for supporting Jay. He is an absolute phenomenon of earnest integrity and … true grit.
So hyped the rumours were true, congrats Jay!!! Love seeing Chris with these cheeky little smiles throughout this, looking like a proud older brother haha
I hope Jay understands this, but just wanted to clarify that 9% of 67kg is ~6kg, so he's talking about losing *all* of the fat. My understanding is that survival at under 2% body fat for men is at risk, below 5 is generally regarded as dangerous. Yes, bodybuilders can get down to this briefly for competition, but they can't lift as much, are super fatigued, report dizziness, etc. during this phase. In other words: not in good shape to set a PR for a hill climb.
O e of these rare interview that gives you so many insights of the pro world. Lets put the diet comments aside in the fist 5 mins as in my personal opinion they could be little judgemental for these folks who enjoy their big breaky after long ride... Feeling Jay will be the strongest weapon for Tadei this year Bravo guys
Great interview Chris. Look forward to seeing more chats with Jay over summer, with Nationals and TDU plans/preparation… You and Jesse should be on UAE payroll 😉
So glad I watched this. Unbelievable insight in to realities of being a WT rider. Such an elite mentality to squeeze everything out of himself. Looking forward to more with Jay!!
Congratulations Jay V and team UAE...both will complement each other on winning stages, sprints and races...you are a natural athlete and cannot wait to see you with the team👌🚴♂️🏆
I don’t think the Jay is a robot, or has robotic responses, but I do think that the sport needs personality, albeit even for that short minute at the finish which goes along way. The media loves Pog because of his playful and positive interviews.
Really interesting to hear the weight discussion, I would have always assumed from a performance perspective that extra calories wouldn’t be a huge issue when you are competing at the pro level. Ultimately that extra fuel is going to get used, and it’s not like there is such a huge calorie surplus that you can add 1/2kg.
Amazing interview, wouldn't list better questions by myself. I've seen on medias that people are devided oppinions on Jay moving to UAE, but I think that it's an amazing jump in his life and career. Next seasom will tell, but Jay is a humble and very good athlete and I don't doubt that he will crash next season. All blessings to you Chris and to Jay 🎉💯
And who knows, maybe if 'Gotcha' is not feeling too great on a particular climb next season, and Jay IS, he will be allowed to just 'go for it', on that stage. 😉👍
@@troycollett8540 You do not think that UAE's D.S./management specifically brought Jay into their ranks to help Tadej out on the mountain stages (and yes, to possibly also try to develop him into a future GC rider)??
@@Fordworldrallyfan no he will most likely go to vuelta as a leader You really need to listen to the interview as he says he joined the team to be a gc rider
Hey Justin, thanks for that comment. It’s interesting you mention the letting people talk thing, as that’s the thing at bugs me the most about some podcasts out there. Cheers for the comment mate
WOW have things changed before a big race 135 mile 217 Km stages loaded on beans and buttered toast with Ribena drinks in duel bottles this is a great video thanks to you both Chris and such a insight to you Jan as a ex pro it just shows we didn't have a clue just get the miles into your legs every week out of the racing season 100 / 120 miles a day x 6 mostly alone Saturday in a group Sunday a fast 25 miler then home.
Fantastic for Jay really looking forward to seeing where the season takes him next year!! Just on nutrition I’ve just had a monstrous bowl of porridge before my ride today…is that a good thing!?
A rear facing camera on his bike while he races up some of the big climbs this year would be amazing, with a Chris and Jesse breakdown afterward. ...any chance?
George Bennett is another one who says ketones don't work for him. Basically switches off his top end if I remember right, so is obviously quite person specific.
with the disappointment that george was or how he himself would say "good bloke shit rider" i hope jay will shine at UAE and help to win the Grand Tours
Congratulations Jay, hope it works out well. Nice interview Chris - any one else out there intrigued by how much focus there is on weight? Total obsession with calories in and out 😲 On a side note - I personally dislike the fact that governments with poor human rites records and outdated energy companies are using the sport to push their agendas. I look forward to that changing 🙏
If one is a pure climber (or even mostly a climber) that weight thing is EXISTENTIAL to their livelihood. To become a better TT rider, there may have to be a slight compromise in that maniacal obsession, in order to have more flatland oriented type muscle/power, but not too much, especially if the ultimate goal is to become a GC contender.
@@troycollett8540 Then you must have watched a different interview than I did. All I heard was UAE is the right move because Alpecin didn’t have 1, 2, 3, 4, A, B, C…. Not a nice way to show gratitude to the team that brought him to the world tour
Could not agree more with Chris on the World Tour/Pro cyclist being more 'finely tuned' than the 'stick and ball' sports playa. But I take it even further yet, saying that the power/wattage/just plain old WORK output of the pro riders, as compared to those 'contact sports' (or even worse yet, the NON-contact duffers, LOL!) pros vs. the differences in PAY between the two puts (YES, even the best paid top tier) riders into the realm of slave labor, by said comparison. 😡
Yeah, Italians eat little for breakfast, but they eat big in the evening, so all they need to do in the morning is restore liver glycogen, which they do by eating a small, sweet snack.
Go and watch the chat I had with jay earlier this year, he is incredibly honest about the whole experience. Thanks for the comment kieran, be great if you shared the channel with your mates
It basically IS (miserable), especially for the pay they get as compensation for said misery. One REALLY REALLY has to LOVE the sport, as a whole, in order to participate in it at that level, even for a relatively short time/career.
@@Fordworldrallyfan Indeed. My other sport is rock climbing which is also miserably paid at the professional level. All but the very top climbers are living in a van, doing some coaching and route setting to make ends meet. You definitely need to be obsessed with climbing to make it work. There has also been a recent trend in climbing of athletes speaking out about their disordered eating and body dismorphia issues which I'm surprised we don't hear much about in the cycling world. There has to be some pretty long lasting health implications at a hormonal level to maintain single digit body fat for long stretches at a time.
100% agree Ryan. But it’s the people trying to copy the lifestyle of guys like Jay that are the real problem. At least Jay has professional management of his eating, it’s guys like you and me who watch this stuff and “have a go ourselves” that are the worry. Check out the video I did earlier this year on my battles with weight
@@ChrisMillerCycling definitely a danger for all but most certainly an increased risk for the guys with no team around them. I do believe that at some point rules will have to be implemented for rider safety.
I never wanted to be a sports professional, they are crazy the amount of carbohydrates and sugar they eat is barbarity, I want to see their health in 10, 15 years, these carbohydrates increase insulin and pure glucose, I do not advocate any diet but I've been on a ketogenic diet for 3 years, I don't have problems with food and I fast for 24 hours without satiety and without being hungry, how barbaric are these carbohydrates, if I were a professional they would have to give me fat to train, eat carbohydrates to increase the insulin? They are crazy, the future is low carbohydrates for human health, I'm not saying it's new science, I train 4 hours fasting without problem
This was a stellar move for Jay and UAE
