Actually Moana could have never restored the heart because she didn't know wayfinding. That was one of the main ideas for Maui even being in the movie.
Seamus Gorman, Maui is necessary because he is needed to teach Moana how to way-find so that she can realize who she is and teach those skills to her people who have long forgotten them. Maui is Moana's key to reconnecting with her culture's past which he is able to be because he has been cut off from the world while they lost their seafaring skills.
Moana fan here coming to defend this jewel of a movie! :P Maui is the one who teaches Moana how to be a master wayfinder! No one could've taught her that 'cause that tradition was dead in Motunui, so that was his purpose. Without him the whole village would not be able to travel again, they'd have to figure it out on their own and would end up probably dead or crazy lost. He wasn't useless. :/
And besides, Maui's presence is also important because Moana helps him with compassion to defeat the ghosts of the past, and then, in the end, if it weren't for him, Moana would perhaps have died struck by Te-Ka's lava... and again, Maui (but also Te-Ka) is the proof of how egoism (even involuntary) can lead to more and more pain and suffering... I love so much this movie 💖
But Seamus, here's why Maui is necessary: he taught Moana a lesson. Let's start from the beginning. Moana, at the start of the film, was is typical teenager. She thinks she knows better than her overbearing dad, and she's desperate to go out and see a world which she's idolized as this paradise of adventure. So what happens? First of all, she almost drowns, which drives home the point that she doesn't know what she's doing. Then when she finally goes out into the sea, she doesn't know how to sail her boat; the only reason she makes it to Maui's island alive is because the ocean gets her there. As she gets to know Maui, she finds that he's this sort of arrogant douchebag. Humanity is like his parents, always having him do things. He thinks he knows better than them, and he thinks he knows better than Moana. So when she orders him to help her, he brushes her off as a nuisance. But she knows that he needs to help her, because by now she's starting to realize that she's way in over her head. She's just one teenager, her first time on the water. Maui thinks the same of himself (and he's a _demigod,_ so it goes to show how harrowing a task this is), and bails when it finally starts seeming like it's gonna do more harm than good to him. By the end, she still knows she can't do it. But she's still going to try. Maui comes back and they complete the task together, having both learned from each other.
100th like yay!! ...... Yea. No one was gonna teach Moana to sail so idk how she would've done that part without Maui (Her village may have even lost the knowledge on how to sail so she might have had to teach them all at the end.)....Also also, her lessons about people being more complex (everyone isn't _all_ good or bad) that she learns from Maui is what lets her recognize Te Fiti. But yea, Maui is a plot device serviced for the main character. Does his role have to be deep?
Umm Seamus I think the reason she needed to find Maui is because Maui is the one who took the heart in the first place. He needed to realize that it was wrong to do so and not take the heart again (that is, if he somehow got off the island and got his hook back). Also, then he'd learn that he doesn't need to steal things (therefore causing messes like the one in the film) for the approval of mankind.
Both of my younger brothers are Hufflepuff and so is my mom. Then, I'm over here alone in Ravenclaw. It's like everyone in my family is teamed up against me!
But Moana couldn't really sail and would probably have ended up not even getting to her to save her in the first place =/ Also Character Development and stuff. She also wouldn't have survived that first attempt without Maoui almost breaking his hook. (I am so sorry if I misspelled his name, I just kinda can't remember how to spell it right now =/) And he was a really fun character with a really fun song, so there's that. I don't get how something like that can make you not like a movie. She didn't know she didn't need him, so she helped him.
SamuraiFighterChick Not really... She Pocahontas's whole story is about a guy. Moana has no love interest and has one intent. And she's about as generic as Rapunzel is.
I hate to be that triggered Moana fan but the point of going to get Maui was because he was the one who took the heart, he needed to return it. It was kind of like his punishment. For the plot's sake, he also taught Moana how to control her boat and how to navigate the ocean since the practice had been lost. It would also answer the questions of where Maui went and how his life continued after the legend had been being told for 1000 years. Moana helped him understand and accept his relationship with humans, and allowed him the chance to redeem himself and defeat Te Ka. I used to be worse than you; I used to argue "if the ocean is sentient, why couldn't it have just put the heart back itself?" The issue with other people besides Moana trying to return the heart was that it could not be returned by force. Therefore Moana thought she needed Maui to defeat Te Ka in order to get over to Te Fiti. Nobody knew Te Ka and Te Fiti were the same person. Moana didn't realize that compassion and kindness was the way to return the heart until she realized who Te Ka really was. Overall it's based on a story that has variations across different Polynesian cultures and it's a little bit more difficult to "translate" the story into a more European model of fairytale/legend suitable for Disney movies.
The ocean didn't return the heart because it the ocean didn't No one would know the waters were safe agai and wouldn't have bogies and Maui would have never got his book bqckay
As a Slytherin who used to be a Hufflepuff but got Gryffindor way too many times on Pottermore and just decided to settle with Slytherin because ANYTHING BUT GRYFFINDOR who thinks Slytherin got a bad rap in the books and Hufflepuff was way understated it warms my heart to know you, as a Hufflepuff, are friends with a Slytherin. Good on ya! Wow that was an awkward sentence. ALSO, Maui WAS essential to Moana's journey. Why? Because he taught her how to sail. Without learning how to sail she never would have found Te'Fiti and she never would have gotten past Te'Ka. If, by some miracle, she /did/ find Te'Fiti then Te'Ka would have boiled her to death. He may not have restored the heart, found the heart, or done anything significant in the way of fighting but he guided her to where she needed to go and gave her the necessary tools to complete her mission. He also gave her courage indirectly, but that's just my opinion, not getting into it. But yeah, if Maui wasn't in the film or didn't help Moana, she would have died. End of story.
1) why didn't you answer the question that was "a really good question"? (your words) 2) Maui is a catalyst for the journey. Also he taught her how to sail and if we hadn't be looking for his hook we never would have come across Tomatoa and gotten "Shiny". You're Welcome 😉
Jesse Epperson So you're saying having a movie for... well, the movie, is a waste of time... huh... Well then I'll say the Woody and Buzz adventures in toy story was a waste of time because Woody could of just gotten over it and waited for Andy to start playing with him again rather than try and push Buzz behind the desk. (Btw I don't actually think that, I'm not an idiot)
Moana is a overrated movie, and the character herself is the new format of a female character. Which makes them annoying... because somewhere down the road...Disney forgot how to make good female characters.
And if we hadn't gotten Shiny, we wouldn't have gotten THIS gem of a metal cover! ua-cam.com/video/knlw6kFP_RU/v-deo.html (This is the only reason I can convince myself to defend Moana when people diss it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't care for it either.)
I see what you're saying about Moana, but I think that meeting and saving Maui was one of the things the Ocean wanted her to do. I think the Ocean had more in mind that just sailing her to Tafiti and putting the stone back. It could have done that by it's self or just dragged Moana's boat to the right place and been done with it. It wasn't so much that Maui had to get his hook back to help Moana, but that it knew that they could teach each other the things they were lacking. If she went straight to Tafiti she wouldn't have learned anything except that the ocean didn't mean instant death. She wouldn't have learned how to sail properly, she wouldn't have been confident enough to push through Tafiti's barriers, Maui wouldn't have learned that he was worth more than the power his hook imparted to him. Not to mention that he was responsible for stealing the heart to begin with, and for the fate that the islands were suffering. He had a responsibility to try and put that to rights also. At least that's how I saw it. 😉🤓
The over arching message of Moana is learning that you can achieve things yourself without the help of somone who seems stronger or more powerful. There would be no learning curve without her initial belief that she needs his help.

I agree Moana didn't need Maui, but she thought she did. She would've never left alone, and only through the adventures with him, does she gain more confidence which enables her to try on her own (that and her Grandma)
KaraIsabella here’s something that another commenter said: “ Maui is necessary because he teaches Moana how to way-find (sail) so that she can realize who she is and teach those skills to her people who have long forgotten them. Maui is Moana’s key to reconnecting with her cultures past...” so basically without Maui she wouldn’t have learned to way-find, figure out who she is, and change her peoples way for the better. Also, at the first attempt to return tefiti’s heart.. Moana would have died if not for Maui sacrificing his hook.
I've been staring at the edge of the water 'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why I wish I could be the perfect daughter But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try Every turn I take, every trail I track Every path I make, every road leads back To the place I know, where I can not go, where I long to be See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me And no one knows, how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go I know everybody on this island, seems so happy on this island Everything is by design I know everybody on this island has a role on this island So maybe I can roll with mine I can lead with pride, I can make us strong I'll be satisfied if I play along But the voice inside sings a different song What is wrong with me? See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding But no one knows, how deep it goes And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me And let me know, what's beyond that line, will I cross that line? The line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me And no one knows, how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, how far I'll go Your welcome.
I always took Maui’s role in the film to be really important. Moana goes after him because she thinks that she can only succeed with his help. In the end, she was perfectly capable of returning the heart herself. I think he helped her realize that she was powerful on her own. That she wasn’t the little kid who had to be looked after anymore.
About Maui (I hope I’m spelling that right) being pointless, I’ve heard this a few times, and he does one thing while fighting Te Kā that actually allowed her to restore the heart. He hit her in the chest with his hook and opened up the spiral where the heart needed to be put back. If the spiral were just out in the open, the movie would be pretty short. The Ocean could have just put the heart back on its own (like How It Should Have Ended showed). Not saying you should like the movie because of this. Just something I wanted to point out.
I've been watching your channel for a while now and I love it! my boyfriend was up the other night and I was watching you and he was getting annoyed cause I was too busy watching you to notice he was still there x😍😍😍 keep up the good work!!
Yeah, Moana is probably one of the safest films Disney did, as compared to Zootopia which came out earlier in the year. Sure, it had good animation and good music, but still. Thank goodness it took home the Oscar that year.
"if I'm not in this video I'm going to be pissed" a direct Tori Wood quote Edit: after finishing the video "I'm gonna kill him.... I'M NOT IN THE VIDEO"
Maui is actually useful because he teaches Moana wind binding and is an actual expert at defeating monsters. It's like if you went into a high-level baking contest or something without any help or past experience.
Btw Maui literally teaches Moana to sail, and without him she wouldn’t have made it to Te Fiti in the first place. also Moana is my favourite Disney princess movie 🌊
"If you could go back to any event in history, where would you go back to and why?" - "That's actually a really good question." Continues by not answering it xD And about Moana, I guess she was taught how to sail really well by Maui? And that makes him useful? Because she wouldn't have been able to do that jump on the side and turn thingy that Maui showed her. Also, you can up your list of friends from 3 to 4 if you count me :D
I love watching your videos i have watched every one you have ever made. I agree with you about moana and i have constantly gotten in to arguments about it and its nice to see some one else agrees. I love watching you and enjoy your conspiracy theories, would love to meet you but i know it is impossible but you are my idle ❤
Lol did you even watch Moana? Maui was necessary because no one knows how to wayfind properly to Te-Ka anymore. She only knew how to go to Maui because of the huge constellation directing towards him. The whole story of Maui wasn’t irrelevant, it showed how a powerful Demi-God was also human and his sincere realization of life made him change. That’s my personal opinion, no hate towards Seamus.
Person: "If you could go back to one point in history when would it be and why?" Seamus: That's actually a really good question. Also Seamus: *proceeds to ignore it* lmaoooo
the U.S constitution was signed on September 17, 1785. It basically is a document signed by strong historical american figures of the time. It gave basic rights to Americans . It is very famous in the U.S and represents many things like freedom, justice for all, ect. Thanks for the good videos!!
sorry to ask this, but how many film/book based merchandise do you have?(not counting any of the movies and books themselves.) Just been curious, because your room; from what we've seen, has really cool stuff.

I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I can not go, where I long to be
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go
I know everybody on this island, seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know everybody on this island has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I'll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?
See the light as it shines on the sea? It's blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what's beyond that line, will I cross that line?
The line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, how far I'll go
Your welcome.
Mifi Draws Is that from Harry Potter?
My welcome _what?_
"How does it feel to be talentless... like no talent... at all" I laughed so hard!!
How would your life be without toy story? 'I DONT LIKE TO THINK ABOUT LIFE IN HELL' 😂
Edit: My life is already in hell.
People: what’s your middle n-
Seamus: NO
People: will you ever do another video with your sister
Sister:NO
Nice thumbnail (jk lmao don't kill me)
VickyIsAHufflepuff rip
Lmaooo
VickyIsAHufflepuff lol
He woyuld never kill a Hufflepuff.
I got so triggered
About Maui (I hope I’m spelling that right) being pointless, I’ve heard this a few times, and he does one thing while fighting Te Kā that actually allowed her to restore the heart. He hit her in the chest with his hook and opened up the spiral where the heart needed to be put back. If the spiral were just out in the open, the movie would be pretty short. The Ocean could have just put the heart back on its own (like How It Should Have Ended showed). Not saying you should like the movie because of this. Just something I wanted to point out.
What about Gryffindor or Ravenclaw?! Show respect
I've been watching your channel for a while now and I love it! my boyfriend was up the other night and I was watching you and he was getting annoyed cause I was too busy watching you to notice he was still there x😍😍😍 keep up the good work!!

Moana neede Maui to teach her to sail
Early squad where you at? Love you Seamus💝
Yeah, Moana is probably one of the safest films Disney did, as compared to Zootopia which came out earlier in the year. Sure, it had good animation and good music, but still.
Thank goodness it took home the Oscar that year.
Moana was a far more entertaining movie than Frozen. Didn't you at least liked the songs?? :(
I HATE FROZEN
Irleen Kapoor Let it go!
Plot wise
It actually wasn't
The song "You're Welcome" makes Maui completely necessary.
I would like you to talk about Moana on a larger video. You know, I didn't watch it yet so I want to see the bad things and the good things about it
It's true that Maui wasn't needed for the big goal, but he was needed to help Moana grow and become a more capable leader for her people
I like Moana. And you don't. Well I don't like Toy Story that much.
Heh.
4:04 Moana has to find Maui because she doesn't know where the God is and she doesn't know how to sail, neither.
"I don't consider my self famous"
Me: yOu ShOuLd!!!
How is your hair so good?
*shows messy hair*
Me: that’s better than mine right now.
"if I'm not in this video I'm going to be pissed" a direct Tori Wood quote
Edit: after finishing the video "I'm gonna kill him.... I'M NOT IN THE VIDEO"
Laurel Morgan why is she even aloud on UA-cam?
Tori Weed*
Jenna B OMG JENNA NOOOO😂😂😂 *tory weed
Why is no one talking about how polite he was ordering that drink?
Adorable
Maui is absolutely necessary to the film Moana. Who else would sing “You’re Welcome”?
Maui is actually useful because he teaches Moana wind binding and is an actual expert at defeating monsters. It's like if you went into a high-level baking contest or something without any help or past experience.
As the title was read millions of little girls can be heard crying.
Yeah
and tridents being sharpened
I unsubscribed because he said that, things like that trigger me
"I just want to know if I can add your name to the list and boost my numbers to 3"
lmao, that killed me XD
I think voldemort has no nose cuz he ran into the wronge wall at the train station!!! LOL😅😂
Btw Maui literally teaches Moana to sail, and without him she wouldn’t have made it to Te Fiti in the first place.
also Moana is my favourite Disney princess movie 🌊
I don’t like Moana as well. And I’m in Ravenclaw. Any ravenclaws here, like if you are.
RonnyMusic 7 I’m a Ravenclaw!
Same
I generally give a lot of movies more credit then they deserve, but Moana was the first movie that I recognized as being terrible.
OMG!! The comment about him having no talent is from his girlfriend Abigail!
“That’s actually a really good question...” *moves on* 🤣
How Dare Your adorable self don't like Moana. Maui is comic relief.
Seamus I want you in Slytherin as much as the next person I really do because it’s my house but I respect that you are a Hufflepuff
3:23 anyone seen the most recent sorting hat quiz? Lol omg 😂
Also, you can up your list of friends from 3 to 4 if you count me :D
i'm a ravenclaw
Me too
Fire and Ice Good for you! :)
i feel you man. i'm as hufflepuff as it gets but all my friends think i'm a ravenclaw
Actually, the ocean could have restored the heart by itself. Without Moana. I'm quoting "HISHE" but it's still true.
HAHAHAHA! At "Hello Darkness, my old friend...", I lost it.
Why does voldermort not have a nose
Because he tried to get rid of acne
No seriously someone actually lost there nose in the 4 th book
Dude! She needed Maui to teach her how to sail 🚣♀️ Remember, she never learned how to sail before Maui taught her 👨🏾🏫👩🏾
Hi seamus!!!!
i love moana bc of the lack of romance (YAYAYAYAYAYYAY) and just the utter hilariousness that maui brings. And Tomatoa
1:12 “That’s actually a really good question!”... that’s actually why I’m not gonna answer it 😂
Person: "If you could go back to one point in history when would it be and why?"
Seamus: That's actually a really good question.
Also Seamus: *proceeds to ignore it*
lmaoooo
the U.S constitution was signed on September 17, 1785. It basically is a document signed by strong historical american figures of the time. It gave basic rights to Americans . It is very famous in the U.S and represents many things like freedom, justice for all, ect. Thanks for the good videos!!
The 14th of May is my birthday😍 thanks for the shoutout. Game recognize game
Moana’s music is good tho.
Oh, that's actually a good question!! (moves on to next question)
You clearly DO know who Sophie is because you mentioned her later in the video.
Catmoon 23 he was joking
Is there a gif of you doing the "Oh how the" (proceeds to turn table)
My little sister LOVES mona plz help me . I wach mona 2 times a day bc of her
Soundwave Pony don’t worry I have an answer it’s simple... don’t watch it with her. You don’t have to spend all day watching TV and movies.
You are lucky, you watch it/hear it only two times a day. When my younger siblings really like some film, they watch it like ten times a day.
Zuzana Laluchová yeah, only two times? My brother watched Frozen five times a day and replayed let it go and like 20 times... 😑
Lucky
My mom makes me wach it
sorry to ask this, but how many film/book based merchandise do you have?(not counting any of the movies and books themselves.) Just been curious, because your room; from what we've seen, has really cool stuff.
They asked what year the constitution was signed he said the day and the month lol
I love your channel don't listen to the hate and NEVER stop making theory videos they make me smile
