Good session zero: especially liked the ground rules part.
Interesting for me as AD&D DM back in the 80s how much of the game system we used to hand wave (segments in surprise, nuances of initiative, weapons Vs specific armour). Suspect we did a Basic/expert Ad&D hybrid.

Yeah, even reading the rules fresh... it's quite hard to keep track of all the rules... there's a lot!

A method we use is roll 3d6 18 times then pick the 6 you want and arrange them the way you want. Only 3 times has someone rolled an 18.

Just started watching. In the AD&D PHB at the top of page 9 under CHARACTER ABILITIES it states that it's expected that PCs be exceptional and have at least TWO ability scores of 15 or higher. So that has always been my "mulligan" for re-rolling.

Good call! In the end, we moved to that system. OD&D was just brutal, 3d6 down the line, in order... so we were used to mediocre characters. But yeah, I didn't see the "two 15's" rule till after our session 0. I allowed characters to re-roll their stats that had under that... if they wanted.... I think in the next session.

@@undertone_dj Oh cool. Speaking of the 3d6 down the line in order, the Shadowdark RPG went back to that. My Shadowdark game is going over a year now. So far so good.

are you really rolling stats in order? not rolling all stats and letting the players putting them where they need to play the type of character they desire to play?

Just for context, I've been playing since 1984, and when 2nd ED came out- I said NOPE... and never looked back

We let them re-order after their "4d6, droplowest"... so yes, they are (mostly) able to get the stats they wanted. Our man Chuck really wanted to player a ranger, and his stats, regardless of how he assigned them didn't meet the minimum requirements... so he went druid. It was pretty adamant that I let him play a ranger, but in the end... I think he's stoked with his character Adros the (stoner) druid!

@@adampender2482 TBH, it seemed to be a money grab, in order to be ready to DM a game [1] you need to buy all new books, and buy all the " the complete xyz" for every class as the general rules were not in the core books- and [2] - it took away from the primary reason for the game in that it was imagination and gameplay to gain abilities, players should go thru gameplay to gain extra abilities that in 2e you can just check a box and have it in your first game, and more
