this is such a good example of the "lost in translation" effect between players and dms. matt's reason for putting the chair in the room seemed only to be to signal to the players that the room had been returned to after whatever initial scuffle took place, thus giving them another small clue about what was going on with yeza/the shop. he even goes on to tack on variations of "you gather the chair was placed here after the fact" to his answers once he realizes they're caught up on the wrong thing. the players, however, don't have all the pieces and are thinking from a more scattered perspective. marisha, specifically, hits the mark early on with the chair being used for interrogation/ect after the fact, but that seems too mundane of an explanation, especially for the ominous image matt presented them with, and they're wary about taking it at face value. they misplace the chair's impirtance onto WHY it was there in the first place, what purpose it was serving within the fiction, instead of what the chair's presence means, the purpose it was serving within the meta. all in all, very interesting (and funny) to see in action! especially as a dm who's been on the other side of this particular kind of mishap.
It's funny, Beau gets a 13 on an investigation check, and Matt pretty much explicitly spells out the answer because it's not that difficult of a thing to figure out- but everyone seems to assume that since it wasn't a super high roll, there must be some additional more complicated hidden explanation they're missing out on.
As per the rules of polymorph, it would've turned back into Yeza, at full hp, not a scratch, and they wouldn't have needed to do the massive quest that they did.
I did that once as well. I had a guy keeping lookout during his shift on night watch. He rolled really high, and there were no enemies, so I had him see a raccoon sneaking up on a bird. I rolled and the bird got away. He then wanted to feed the raccoon and he rolled high animal handling, so the racoon ate his food and stayed with him hoping for more. Matt: Right, I'll put a chair in this room to give an indication that someone came in later and set things up. The party: _But what is up with this chair?_
You know, its nice seeing a great DM like Matt have this kinda struggle too. Theres been way too many moments where I've added a little tid bit thats held up my group for way too long as they over analyzed it and made me regret I ever mentioned it lol.
5:40 The look of such a defeated man. I know this feeling, but I did it to myself and it was glorious wasting my players time for nearly 25 minutes on a room meant to look like a sacrificial altar room, but was just the bedroom of the cult leader.
We defeated the BBEG saved the world and everything is fine, Now.... gather the townsfolk and remaining soldiers ...we have a Chair not on the loose...
I just see this as a miscommunication. Matt had a story in his head about what happened: “A struggle took place in this room. After ransacking the room, the culprit brought a chair down into the room so they could sit while fiddling with the chest (filling it, trying to open it, whatever.)” In Matt’s mind the chair only exists to signify an order/sequence of events. The group fails to understand this. They focus too much on the qualities of the chair, because Matt made a simple mistake of putting an unusual emphasis on the chair’s quality in contrast to the room when he said “but the chair is perfect”. It’s like an unintentional red herring. This happens to me all the time. In a mystery campaign, I had a NPC explain that he was down by a stream skipping stones, and one of my characters got sidetracked examining stones in the stream thinking there was something significant about them when there wasn’t. I had to step out of character/narration to explain “Dude, seriously, there is nothing important to be found there, come back to the main narrative.”
I don't care what anyone says. Matt said that room was locked from the inside and then in the next episode after they found the chair one of the little blurb things in the bottom left corner was a description of a spell that could make anyone look like an inanimate object. That chair was 100% a person hiding out.
I love the scene right before this where Nott is trying to get the other members of the party to break down the door to this room. This is one of my favorite Sam moments because you can hear in his voice that Nott is trying really hard not to have a complete breakdown.
As a DM I now know the perfect way to stall for time while I fix or add details for upcoming sections on the fly; overly describe a piece of common furniture.
Mavoc i was convinced that the chair was a way to get to the ceiling and open up a latch on there. The episode ended with 2 elves going inside the rubbled home. So i thing that there is still something there and the chair is just a way to get it.

mAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE STOOD ON TOP OF THE CHAIR AND SEEN IF THEY COULD REACH ANYTHING FROM THERE?!!?!?!?
(insert Matt Mercer doing dead-eyed "kill me" expression)
Make a will-saving throw!
On one hand, I can relate to Matt's struggle about this damn chair, but on the other, the chair sounds so important in his description and it's driving me insane.
When the DM creates a set piece they only intend as a simple throw-away item, but the players make it into a whole conspiracy.
"Guys, it's a chair." ; )
If only someone had checked to see if it had "C.P." carved into it
This is the gazebo story all over again.
Matt: Right, I'll put a chair in this room to give an indication that someone came in later and set things up.
The party: _But what is up with this chair?_
His eye contact with the camera when Brian was asking about the chair... he was unravelling inside, and this was his cry for help.
5:22 You can actually see something inside Matt just breaking.
The Traveller needs to fuck with the party in a one-shot, by haunting the Nein with a chair.
THIS CHAIR. THIS CHAIR. THIS CHAIR. THIS CHAIR!
Matt enacted his revenge for this and the silly string incident in episode 69.
Hits differently if you've read much of Iain Banks, RIP.
Brilliant 'world-class DM makes players question everyone'
Oh the irony. This aged so well.
I don't care what anyone says. Matt said that room was locked from the inside and then in the next episode after they found the chair one of the little blurb things in the bottom left corner was a description of a spell that could make anyone look like an inanimate object. That chair was 100% a person hiding out.
Describe one chair in too much detail derail entire campaign
At the end of the video, you can literally see his mind like. "Oh my freaking god, it's happening AGAIN!!!!"
Every DM has a moment like this. The look on Matt's face, says it all. "IT'S A FUCKING CHAIR!"
5:20 that's the moment Matt's soul left his body to never come back
In C2E112 the M9 questioned Yeza about the chair AGAIN. Poor Matt had to reiterate again that it was just a normal chair.
Since they announced that Campaign 2 is getting animated please, oh please, I need a running gag about chairs
His soul left his body during talks machina 🤣
In hindsight, Matt did describe the chair as "perfect" and "in the middle of the room" amongst a ransacked mess LOL
I love the scene right before this where Nott is trying to get the other members of the party to break down the door to this room. This is one of my favorite Sam moments because you can hear in his voice that Nott is trying really hard not to have a complete breakdown.
We now know who created the chair ;)
As a DM I now know the perfect way to stall for time while I fix or add details for upcoming sections on the fly; overly describe a piece of common furniture.
Had they rolled a better Investigation roll, they would have found, neatly etched into one of the legs....."CPOP"
The four legs, like a chair bit and his face 😂 gold
Has none of them ever used a chair as a step stool before?
Mavoc i was convinced that the chair was a way to get to the ceiling and open up a latch on there. The episode ended with 2 elves going inside the rubbled home. So i thing that there is still something there and the chair is just a way to get it.
