One of the things Ive really started to notice after 20 years of listening to this album is the keys. You can listen to White Pony over and over and not even really notice the keyboard, but when you actively start trying to pick it out you realize how much depth and thickness it adds to the overall mix, like in the “soon this will be all over…” section in this song.

Fucking fantastic song. One of the best opening tracks to any album, ever. Perhaps it’s worth listening to a band that had a strong influence on the ethereal direction Deftones went on this album and later. That’s right, I mean HUM. Please check out “Afternoon With the Axolotls” or “Isle of the Cheetah” for some ethereal engineering excellence. Especially on “Afternoon With the Axolotls” it sounds at first like you’re in a living room with the band, and then when the power comes in you get teleported into the high desert under a starry, moonless sky. Yeah, it really is like that!

I can remember hearing this track for the first time. My brother picked me up from middle school and he just came back from Tower Records (Bought the limited edition version). You could just feel the shift in the air when the music came out of those speakers. The dissonance of the guitar, the syncopated drumming, the dark/eerie vibe that was totally different from their album before, the lyrics- everything about this opening track was them showing the world they were more than their comrades in the nu-metal scene (even tho they were always more alternative/post-hardcore). This song, along with “Everything in its Right Place” by Radiohead, are some of the best examples of how a band could just change the perception people had of them within seconds.

That “4th” or dissonant push and pull effect you describe is on the money! I call it “stephtones”, because it’s the songs that the guitarist steph writes that most often have it. The songs chino writes on guitar are more often within the “four walls” of the scale / mode.
Also the engineering is this consistent throughout all of white pony, and yes terry date and Deftones = masterful, and yes signature high/piccolo or tightly tuned maple snares, etc, so you made a lot of pin point observations, nicely done! I subscribed

    Underrated and understated guitar work.
Carpenter takes you by the hand and leads you on a stroll through waves of euphoria, the drums causing you to stumble into dissonance here and there, suddenly the guitar picks you up, dusts you off, comforts you and leads you once again.
    It's a truly stunning track.

This is my favorite band, I have others but deftones tops them by far. What I love about your videos is that, first of all you remind me of my favorite teacher in high school who directed our show choir and our chorus and was a composer himself and I think it’s because you can tell when a composer is really listening to the music by the way they make their faces and move their heads to it which I find amusing and awesome at the same time. Lol but he wouldn’t be into metal being that he was very much a 70s funk kind of man. I also really love these videos because it’s so easy for people to love the sound and invest in the story being told by the singers but I feel like it takes someone who really knows how music works to really appreciate every instrument, every note, and every sound and watching these and breaking down each sound makes me appreciate the music this band makes even more than I already did and I’m loving it 😂

You said this isn't an "engineering clinic"... uhh... I don't know about that. That might not be what you think of it as, or want it to be, or intend it to be... but I think that is a large part of what I get from watching your videos. You are charming. I would watch you anyway, pretty sure... but I tend to watch videos where I am learning something. I used to sing, so I watch several singing coaches who do reaction/analysis videos. It lets me re-learn things I've forgotten and continue on by learning new things I'd never even known. I love complex rhythmic and harmonic variations, so I watch some music theory people to learn "why" I like what I like. I know that a lot of the techniques exist, but comparing my natural reaction to the music with an explanation for how those techniques were used is a marvelous educational experience.
From you, I get a dose of the awesome that you offer... your personal energy, enthusiasm... all of that, but I also get more of a focus/education on the mixing and engineering side of things. I don't really get that many other places. I value it.
Didn't think I would comment... not my favorite Deftones song. I like the aching dissonance in places, and the drummer is doing interesting stuff, but except for one or two bars over halfway through it's pretty straight with the timing, and I would describe it as clean and uncomplicated harmonically... not bad... in no way am I dissing Deftones, or even this song. It is an excellent example of what it is, that just isn't my favorite fruit from the tree, if you'll excuse the bizarre metaphor.
I wouldn't turn it off if it came on my play list, but I wouldn't seek it out and listen to it specifically. Yes? It's still Deftones, it's still good.
Anyway, thank you, as always, for doing what you do. I enjoy it and I appreciate all that you bring to your channel. :)

Such incredibly well crafted studio sounds (especially back in the early 90's) were often just label bands with no real depth. Glad I was wrong about them. Drumming wise...nothing better! The production on the beats is unreal, and that goes for the whole album. Abe Cunningham used a different snare for each track, and the time spent on engineering the drum sound has never been neared in any rock album, ever. To the point that it is, arguably the most prominent part of the mix, outside of the vocals....it's pretty much metal with a hip hop base.

@@dongonzulman6478 You can find The Boy’s Republic on their UA-cam channel. The Limited Edition original release (the ones with the solid red or black cases) started with Feiticeira and ended with The Boy’s Republic.

It was actually the limited edition release that started with Feiticeira and ended with The Boy’s Republic, and it did not include back to school/mini maggit. That’s the one I had until someone broke into my car and stole it like 10 years ago.

just a funny fact is the title of this song is a reference to a female character (Joana Prado). she was a tv dancer and nowadays she married to Vitor Belford (aka a UFC fighter). this character is an honor to I dream of Jeannie.

So like a few others in comments today …I witnessed Deftones live last night … my fourth time since the album White Pony was released … first time seeing them headline … it was loud and the crowd was rockous … took a few songs to find the groove ..but when It clicked … it clicked and Chino managed to roar and scream with out losing his cords … a thing to behold!
I love the production on White Pony, love the production on Ohms …and it’s rewarding when a band can bring a live performance to back up what studio magic did for the albums!! There is a Deftones sound …and it has legs …yet is under appreciated …like all things good and great!
George Carlin F-bomb approved …right place and time to use it …I’m sure the sisters at his church would approve!!

I've been drumming for over 20 years and I gotta say, the drum sound on this album is the best I've ever heard, it's absolutely flawless perfection
Any time I've been in the studio recording drums and the producer/engineer asks what I want my drums to sound like in the mix, my answer is ALWAYS "I want to sound like Abe Cunningham on White Pony".
That snare man, that fucking snare, it's just so damn crisp and razor sharp

Frank Delgado is the DJ for Deftones he's responsible for the "atmosphere" of most of their songs
