The rhythmic bit in the middle is a vocal thing. I remember reading an interview with Chino from around the time it came out and he said the only part that bothered him on the album was that that bit sounded like DJ scratches when it was actually his voice.
I could tell it was his voice the first time I heard it! But I really listen deep to his singing and vocals and could just tell 🤷🏽♂️I love his way of screaming, singing, falsettos, and noises he makes with his vocals.
I grew up on Deftones. I forgot how much I loved them til I found you on UA-cam doing this series. Thank you for this, you have awakened a portion of my soul that I had forgotten about. Rock TF On!
New subscriber here, but I LOVE these videos. I'm a massive Deftones fan and I always loved this song off White Pony, so I'm glad you've actually dove into one of the entire album, rather than just Passenger, Mini Maggit, or Change (In the House of Flies). And that "chug" is his vocals. Seeing them live makes you appreciate Chino's vocal diversity even more, which he's still absolutely phenomenal after damn near 30 years of Deftones.
Ever wonder why the Album is called White Pony? Ever wonder why Chino's voice is destroyed and he can't scream like him used to? Cocaine... White Pony is cocaine, and this song is about Strippers and Blow Theory was this song was about partying in Korea, but Deftones didn't tour there until 2009. It's possible the title is a deliberate misspelling of 'chorea' a "nervous condition characterized by jerky, involuntary movements, chiefly of the face and extremities" which can describe someone high on Coke. Pony work your pitch ie Waiting for the Coke high to kick in This was the only song that had lyrics and arrangement complete at the start of the White Pony Sessions. Also the first song Frank Delgado worked on as an official member of the band. He was previously in another band that had opened for Deftones several times and had minor contributions to previous albums. For this album (possibly due to pressure from Maverick, because having a DJ in the band was a trendy numetal thing) they wanted to hire the DJ full time. After recording a couple of songs they realized it was going to work and told him to 'quit his day job' as a house DJ.
That's so weird, my fav part is his screaming. Especially the "come in SIDE!" Funny thing is i thought the lyrics were "nighttime cavity. KILL ME!!!" like he was in so much pain from his tooth. Not "night time cavity. come in" aka a va jay jay i think
@@iximusic Yeah. it was their first album where they took a story telling approach vs writing about themselves so it would explain that. it is hard to talk about intercourse in a song without saying outright. I like incubus' "pink tractor beam into you incision. " from here in my room. The next song Passenger is just 24/7 sex in a car lol.
Sound like an awesome band. 😎 I’m a 36 year old Cis white male Marine Corps veteran married to a Black Woman. Old white guys have f*cked up our world since…well, forever. It’s time the girls team has their shot. Especially black girls. Women have way more empathy than men. Way more common sense. Way more responsibility and conscientiousness. And way more sense of community and globally -minded thinking. Black women are the true patriots. Demographically, they are the most over represented members of the military per capita. This voting bloc also saved the US from Trump in 2020. They’re also incredibly beautiful, inside and out. Imagine how the war in Ukraine would be going if 45 was still in power after January the 6th. That draft-dodging coward would still be sucking off Putin. F*ck the PATRIARCHY. Semper Fi🇺🇸 and Slava Ukraini🇺🇦!
I know you can look this stuff up if you like, but I recently commissioned this playthrough bass tab of Korea from a good friend. He nailed the bass which you may find interesting. ua-cam.com/video/_w7x4SGVBag/v-deo.html
If you're talking about intervals, 2nds are close together and 9ths are over an octave apart so they sound really different. If I was talking about when I say things like "it's the 9th" I'm talking about the parts of chords, in which case it's become convention to think of the 2nd in a chord as the 9th even if it's voiced like a close 2nd. I believe it comes from the way jazz musicians think of what are called chord extensions (9ths, 11ths, 13ths, and 16th). Hope that helps!

cool, thanks!

Pretty sure this particular track from the album was scratched as shit on my cd from how much I played it and would rock out to it
The vocal rhythms thing is supposed to mimic spasms. Chorea is kind of a disease you get from using cocaine that makes you spasm a bit.
These years later, and still such a great voice that can't be easily compared to... anyone.
I always say he sounds like Chester Bennington on steroids haha

Man, I love these videos! Watching you intellectually fangirl over the music of my formative years is so enthralling.

Always been my favorite track on the album
So underrated, Awesome Riff.
the acoustic version of this🔥
This is one of my favs on this album that late breakdown
Yes.
Awesome guitarist
Love the subtle turntable scratches on the section from 2:17
Pretty sure that is Chinos voice not a turntable 🤯
@@renecarrillo9393 when they play it live it's a turntable scratch, so I figured it would be the same on the record too.
thats chino, so cool
I'm pretty positive the "chic kah" is Chino.

This song is about vices indeed. I love that song even if the message isn't positive, is one that anyone can relate to.
I would like a full vocal rendition of Block Rockin' Beats by ixi
Good song
He’s a harmonic earthquake
It sounded like 'something I can never have' when you isolated his vocals on keys.
Full on steph badness👍
I’m a Korean and still have no idea why this song named Korea 🤣 Maybe something about Korean-American prostitute
Look up “chorea”
That's so weird, my fav part is his screaming. Especially the "come in SIDE!"

7 string lead ..
Easily #1
The 7th str. guitar really lays into this track

I always assumed the scratchy sounds was Frank because duh he’s the DJ but I guess not?
Someone said it's Chino making weird vocal sounds!
I'd dare sayin it's Chino alright, since he picks up from that sound at the end and screams... so yeh. I bet Chino.
how do you know that it's a ninth and not a second in these videos?

Do you do these live? You mention needing to recover at the start of the video.
Yes! I do a monthly listening party on Patreon for the $10 tier - this series is edited from one of those.
Are you gonna do incubus next? They're very sus.
