I was so scared to try glycerin for so long. But my hair was always dry. I mean crunchy even with using natural oils and water. So I'm like I can't get no dryer so I'll just try out vegetable glycerin. OMG my hair has never in my life been so moisturized and healthy. I have virtually no breakage now, which is helping my hair to retain length. My hair grows just slightly over an inch a month now with good hair practices. I love the video now to subscribe :)

I've used a vegetable glycerin and water mix year round on my 4c hair for the past four years and have never had a problem with it. It's the only thing that makes my hair super easy to detangle and keeps it soft & moisturized at a low price.

Naturals need to do a better job of critically evaluating all the information thrown at us! The water bonded to the glycerin is not static. Since its an aqueous environment the water and glycerin molecules move around. The reaction can be affected by environmental factors (eg. temp), harsh winter. As for pulling water from your hair. Maybe. You need some real Canadian winter for that test.
I agree. My first thought was "water can evaporate" so the water/glycerin balance is not definite. A dry climate will make the water in the glycerin mix evaporate quickly so that the glycerin will start attracting water from other sources (the dry air has none), like your hair. I noticed that my hair takes forever to dry in the summer if I am using glycerin and it seems that the water evaporates slowly. In winter, the glycerin causes my hair to dry quickly and any hair that is not exposed to air (hair in a bun) remains wet for days. I can still use glycerin in Northeast/Midwest winters if I use a humidifier in my house and wet my hair often.

I didn't understand it because I am new to my natural hair (I know that sounds like a contradiction). Now I fully understand why my hair had more frizz to it with the products I used. I love glycerin for my hair. I don’t mind the shrinkage or frizz because my hair stays moisturized for three days then I re-moisturize & style once more before wash day. I also use glycerin in the winter.
This video was very informative and helpful! Your myth busting videos are great! I have been using glycerin and water spritz year round for years and haven't had any major issues with my hair drying out unless my ratio of glycerin is higher than the water. Other than that, it's performs well on my hair even during the harsh cold, Jersey weather. You never know until you experiment with it for yourself! =)
And I agree, glycerin does puff up my hair, but it never dries it out. And for people talking about Atlanta verses the Northeast, glycerin is based on a dew point (optimal dew points for glycerin to be used would be between 40-60). Here in the A the dew points have been well below 40 (as a matter of fact, it's been cold and dry and dew points have been in the 20s), so supposedly you shouldn't use it because it would be drying. I beg to differ as I have never had my hair dry out, but it has become puffy from retaining the moisture. I am so glad you are doing these myth videos, too much misleading information out there!

I tried using glycerin because I heard such good thing about it, made a mix of glycerin with fresh water followed instructions on how much to mix. The first day it was great, but by the fourth day my hair was dry and covered in flakes. At first I though The cause was by another product ORS hair cream or using that product with my spray mix. I washed my hair and only used the glycerin water mix. My hair was cloated and had white ball flakes all over my scalp, I sprayed it with water but a few hours later my fair dried out again. so I shampoo my hair again. I tested it for a week and came to the conclusion it must be the glycerin. Stopped using the glycerin mix and there was no flakes or dryness, I live in Europe so the weather is very cold and wet which I think is the main cause. My Conclusion is that products with glycerin in them which are lower on the ingredients list work fine but higher amount just seem to dry out my hair and cause buildup. My sister hair on the other hand loves it but she has issue with protein based products so it’s all about balancing what works for your hair. There no right or wrong in using an ingredient just finding the balance.

I've noticed a difference in my shrinkage as well when I use it though, so I generally only use it when I'm doing a long-term protective style when my length doesn't really matter to me. I use glycerin also, but I use the carefree curl glycerin moisturizer. I think it helps my hair retain moisture. I don't know about frizz cus I keep my hair in a puff which IS BAD but it's the only thing I can do.

ive only been properly moistening and defining my curls for the past month or so and ive found the best products for me are actually deep conditioners since a lot of them dont contain glycerin, i use them as a leave in conditioner/styling cream, so far glygeryn makes my hair frizzy by day 2, but conditioner alone doesnt have enough hold for me... might be time too try flax seed gel home made?

The reason the glycerine side has more "frizz" is because that side is more wet therefore it is not staying stretched by the twists. It is going back to your natural type 4 structure. The hair that stays drier can stay stretched because it is not wet somewhat to cause it to revert. That states nothing about the hair drying, it just speaks to the curl pattern reverting more on the side that is wetter.
Thanks for sharing your experience with glycerin, from the sounds of it, it would seem that that would prove my theory correct. Its not as cold here so I couldn't be certain from the experiment.

Love this Myth Busters series!!!! Can you compare towel vs t-shirt to dry hair... Do you get less frizz with the tshirt? I'm so skeptical of all these natural hair rules that I've never even tried it.
I have tried it once or twice but I think using a t-shirt is for those that have more curlier or defined hair that try to preserve their curls after cleansing their hair. My hair is not very suited for a wash n go. I have naturally frizzy hair so it is going to frizz no matter how I dry it.
This video was very intriguing. I recently purchased The Mane Choice Kids Collection 1,2,3,4. I liked it all, but the hydration spray and the moisturizer have glycerin in them as the 2nd ingredient. My 3c kid and 4b kid had very nice moisturizing looking hair before leaving for school, but by the end of the day their hair looked dry with a cast. It is winter, I will try again in the spring.
