GRUB Control and Prevention in the Lawn

  • In today’s video we discuss how I control, and hopefully prevent, grubs in my lawn. Grubs, or grub worms, are actually June bug or June beetle larva. These baby June bugs feed on the root system of your grass and can cause some major damage to your lawn. Grubs are the primary reason it’s a good idea to do a little poking around underneath the problem spots in your yard, because they very well could be to blame. I personally use a product called Dominion 2L (active ingredient Imidichloprid) as my primary grub control treatment. Dominion is a liquid product you apply with a sprayer. There are also plenty of granular options available on the market including Sevin, Spectracide, and of course, Scott’s Grub-Ex. After applying, all of these products need to be watered in, in order to reach the root zone.

    Looks like your lawn has bounced back nicely from the power dethatch video you did. I'm liking the low cut Bermuda. Looks like I may have to dethatch as well. Great video on the grub control.

    Hey Rhett, recently moved to Austin and have really enjoyed your videos learning about warm season turf. I've been told that I have a "watering day" and I don't think I can get down enough water in 1 day to keep my lawn alive throughout the summer. Do you have any suggestions? How do you deal with that? Lots of Hyderetain haha? Love the channel, has helped my lawn tremendously.

      I just water the one time a week as well. I put down a full inch of water that one day, using two separate 1/2 inch cycles. Space them apart an hour or two to help reduce saturation and runoff. Aside from that we just have to hope and pray we get some relief from Mother Nature!

      @alexjamieson 2 роки тому

      Thanks so much, I didn't even think to space them out so it gets fully saturated.

    Great vid as usual!! Question for you! Do you mix anything with your plant growth regulator to prevent the yellowing on the lawn from the PGR?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Yes sir, I’ll normally mix it with some liquid iron to help out with the bronzing you get from the PGR.

      I never go too heavy. Usually 2oz/1000. I’m using the Greene Effect this season.

    If you aerate and seed in the fall for fescue, will spraying Dominion 2L effect fescue seed?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  2 роки тому

      Dominion shouldn’t have any effect on the actual grass at all, but I would always suggest you read the label just to be certain.

    I have a termite infestation in my lawn I tried sevin granules combined with ortho spray in and termites are laughing at me . So u recommend dominion will work for termites under the ground? Last question what's up w that alarm clock radio 📻 on your shirt my cousin has one if those old school alarm in his room . Sorry I'm a newb to your channel lol

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  Рік тому

      Haha the alarm clock says it’s MOW:30 on there. It is definitely old school. Dominion is a termiticide so it should effectively treat subterranean termites.

    How are the seed heads looking. It's that time here in GA .. I've got a white haze on lawn....

      The ones I have are mostly along the sidewalk and oddly enough around my down spouts. So far nothing too terrible, but I always dread seeing them show up. Mother Nature hasn’t been too kind to us as of late.

    How often do you apply grub control?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  2 роки тому +1

      I’ll normally apply the Dominion twice a year, but really this May application is the only one where I’m focusing on grubs. I’ll just rotate between the Bifen and Dominion products. Probably make 3-4 total insect treatments a season.

    What are seed heads?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  3 місяці тому

      Seed heads are your turf’s attempt at reproducing. They form a hard stalk that shoots off the grass with a seed head at the end. Tough for your mower to actually cut.

  • @D-Allen

    I am a bit skeptical of Spectracide Triazicide for grubs. In the turf mechanics video (ua-cam.com/video/pzGmjwC9ZiA/v-deo.html, at 3:07) he refers to this product not working on grubs. The other two are fine from what I have researched.

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  Рік тому

      I’ve never used it specifically for the grubs, so I can’t speak for it’s efficacy in that department.. aside from it being on the label. He might be on to something!

    • @YouTubeHarringtons
      @YouTubeHarringtons Рік тому +2

      @MrDae006 You’re right to be skeptical. None of those products are effective on mature, active grub populations.
      Products containing imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin or chlorantraniloprole will not control grubs in the spring. They are preventive products that work very well on newly hatched grubs present in July, but do not work well for large grubs found from September to May.
      There are two chemicals, carbaryl and trichlorfon, that are considered curative treatments. They are short-lived compounds that kill all life stages of grubs. These two insecticides are the only options if high numbers of grubs are found in the fall and in spring before early May.
      Do not use products containing ONLY lambda-cyhalothrin, gamma-cyhalothrin, bifenthrin, deltamethrin, cyfluthrin or permethrin for grub control. Products containing only these ingredients will not work for grub control because the active ingredient binds with organic material and will not move down to where the grubs are feeding.
