  • The Ticonderoga class of guided-missile cruisers is a class of warships in the United States Navy, first ordered and authorized in the 1978 fiscal year. The class uses passive phased-array radar and was originally planned as a class of destroyers. However, the increased combat capability offered by the Aegis Combat System and the AN/SPY-1 radar system, together with the capability of operating as a flagship, were used to justify the change of the classification from DDG (guided missile destroyer) to CG (guided-missile cruiser) shortly before the keels were laid down for Ticonderoga and Yorktown.
    Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers are multi-role warships.

Served on A Tico class CG for 5 1/2 years. The U.S.S. San Jacinto (CG-56). You did a beautiful job on this model. The model had some flaws, but none of them were your fault. You where right to put the "flight deck nets", as they are called, down. If there is a helo on deck it's the position they are most likely to be in.
Some ladders where missing, I.E. from the stbd side of the signal bridge to the O-3 level. As well as the one from the O-2 level to the stbd boat davit to the main deck. The Name on the display base is also wrong. What makes me say this is the prefix 'U.S.S.' (United States Ship) indicates the specific ship. If it were to say Ticonderoga Class, it would be correct. The USS Ticonderoga CG-47 had a set of two Mk.26 twin arm launchers, while the U.S.S. Philippine Sea (CG-58) has the Mk.41 Vertical launch system as given to you in the model kit. This is also pre-cruiser mod. A program where certain ships underwent a refit. They added some radars, removed others, generally changing what parts of the masts looked like. I don't know if CG-58 was one of them.
It also looks like she's missing various SHF and Sat-com domes and antennas as well. Those signal flags, I don't know why they'd fly those specific ones. What's more that rigging you put on there, very well I might add, is a set of antennas. I think this was pointed out below. But I suppose this can't be helped. Your craftsmanship was impeccable. Seems you were limited more by the model than your skills.

aegis is a type of radar system made with the intent of having a costant 360° coverage arount the ship and with the possibility of tracking and engaging multiple targets at the same time. an aegis cruiser is just a cruiser with that kind of radar. callin a class of ship as "aegis cruiser" isn't wrong, but it's not right at the same time, since there can be more classes of ships with the aegis radar system, so the correct name of this ship should be "Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser (aegis)".
i would also like to build one! great video!

The class in itself is called the Ticonderoga Class and using the AEGIS Combat System that’s why it’s referred to as an AEGIS Cruiser. The Arleigh Burke Class also uses AEGIS and is also referred to as an AEGIS Destroyer. Hope this helped.

Another way to tackle the long gaps on the hull is to fill it with stretched sprue - sometimes gluing then sanding that flush will fill the gap completely - but if not it makes a filler on top of which to add the thinned putty. Great video - thanks.

If this comment hasn't been made before, this ship is a Ticonderoga Class Cruiser. She is equipped with the Aegis defense system. Ships which also utilize the Aegis systems are; Ticonderoga Class Cruisers (USA) Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer (USA), FFGX Class Frigate (USA), Kongo Class Destroyer (Japan), Atago class Destroyer (Japan), Maya Class Destroyer (Japan), Hobart Class Destroyer (Australia), Hunter Class Frigate (Australia), Fridtjof Nansen Class Frigate (Norway), Sejong The Great Class Destroyer (Republic of Korea/South Korea), Alvaro de Bazan Class Frigate (Spain), F110 Class Frigate (Spain).

Great mastery on this construction on the Baseline II Ticonderoga. I plan to build USS Gettysburg CG-64, a Baseline III Ticonderoga, as it was featured on Spike TV's US Navy Pirate Hunters special.
I plan to build various warships of significance, such as USS Bainbridge DDG-96 which assisted in rescuing Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates, back in 2009, and various others for noteworthy reasons.
With this video, it will definitely help in my construction of these notable warships.
    Take care, all the best.

very very nice build. thumbs up for that. I built 2 of that ship in 1/350 scale. only I noticed the forward and aft VLS are interchanged. you put the supposed to be forward VLS in the aft part of the ship. notice the inclined design of the VLS panel 8:25 and the aft VLS on the forward part of the ship 11:35.

You built this ship as the USS PHILIPPINE SEA but the name plateon the stand is the USS TICONDEROGA...?

    • @KumaModels
      @KumaModels  4 роки тому

The kit included markings that would allow you to make a variety of ships; USS Philippine Sea, USS Bunker Hill, USS Normandy etc. (10:15 mark) It's unfortunate that the name on the stand is only USS Ticonderoga. However, all these ships are technically "Ticonderoga class cruisers" so it's close enough!

I'm a Plank Owner of a Spruance Class Destroyer, and have looked online at various times over the years, in hopes of finding where I could get a model like your Tico, so I could build my first model since I was a young boy. (Now 65yo) Haven't had any luck.
Would you kindly advise where I could find a model? Any help in finding it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks again for your video of building the USS Philippine Sea, CG-58

Thank you very much. You can try looking here:
      www.cyber-hobby.com
this store carries dragon kits and are located in Hong Kong but I’m not sure if they have Ticonderoga on stock. Another option would be to try:
      www.hlj.com
I always buy from this site and it’s located in Japan. They carry a lot of different brands so let’s hope they have what you’re looking for.
Lastly, you can try eBay and see if someone has posted a listing for the model you’re looking for.
