British chart music in the 70’s & 80’s was a lot more social commenty than music now. And I miss that.
Great choice. This is a live version, fairly close to the studio version. When I saw them perform, I was singing along to this one ...LOUD!
British post punk era. A 60's mod revival was happening and along with it came the 2Tone lable and the British Ska bands.

Fun fact: Specials singer Terry Hall co-wrote the Go-Go's "Our Lips are Sealed".
Co-written with Jane Wiedlin, all about the fling they had when The Go-Go's were supporting The Specials on a UK tour.
Terry Hall released our lips are sealed when he was in his post specials band the fun boy three.
I had a friend, Richard and he followed them around the Midlands and often got on stage and danced with them at at concerts but most of the audience were there too!

Many moons ago, my brother used to drive me nuts with this song and many other ska songs.
From the same city (Coventry) and era as Hazel O'Connor; one of your earlier subjects.
This was the version released as a live ep. The version on the debut album is a lot slower and is six minutes long.
This version's better imo. Also, I covered this song on my own channel if anyone wants to give it a watch.

I remember this well. Big hit.
Like punk when this was played you got on the dance floor and it was a cross between dancing and fighting for me and my mates in late seventies early eighties it was brilliant what a buzz occasionally a fight did break out but so what ,this is England it’s how it was then we were just letting off steam
I went in to the ska tent at a festival and came out with a broken nose and a new good friend. He was the one that headbutted me, but I had already kicked him in the nuts.
Aaaaaaaah, when men were men. Let's get our world back from this nonsense.

2 tone legends big number one in the uk 1980 from a great ep release I was there at the start of the 2 tone movement still a rude boy now

That American...Awkwardness is hilarious on reaction videos when they listen to English bands and get tripped by the straightforward in your face lyrics. I knew the word contraception was gonna stun them Lol. Also, the 'We like the specials' but have never heard of one of their biggest hits.
We're Canadian. And we do like The Specials. And thanks to this channel, we've learned more and more about them. The AMERICAN market we're exposed to didn't push them very hard in the 80's, when we grew up. AND, they were most popular before we were teens. We love that we're learning what we missed as kids, though, thanks to all these lovely people we met on this channel.
