  • Utah winters are harsh on our cars. By warming up our rides in the driveway before we take off we could be making things even worse. Debbie Dujanovic tells us how letting a car idle when it's cold out can damage the engine.

    Engine don't need to be warmed up, but the transmission needs to be warmed up. The transmission, especially when cold, shifts very weird and warming it up is essential to the longevity.

    " let's gas strip away oil from the engine" .... If this occurs, which it doesn't, it would also occur if you drive to warm up your car. It would be even worse. Their reasoning makes no sense whatsoever. Even at idle the oil pumps will still function.

      When it’s cold (which is why they specified cold weather) the engines computer sends more fuel through the system. This is the reason behind the gasoline “washing down” the cylinder walls like he talked about. Get a clue before you run your fat mouth

    • @geoffre5

      @@roycemartin9068Bro. Did you even read what you wrote? How could you have any comprehension of combustion and believe what you put with any conviction? let alone your comical level of confidence. Did you put a 2 stroke dirt bike engine in your Nissan? Or maybe you are just an angry autistic.
      Fuel injection will not make the ratio SO rich that gas is failing to combust to the point that its "washing oil off the cylinders." lol what a comical idea. That "argument" also has a lot of other issues. Fluid is non compressible for one, that is the easiest issue. Im guessing your cars have blue exhaust dont they? lol. Also by your "logic" the oil could eventually get so watered down with fuel that the engine would eventually seize..... And you do know that oil burns right? Even if the engine was running after being warmed up, with your argument you would need to replace the oil every week, and the spark plugs monthly. I could keep going, the issues with your statement don't end there.
      Regardless, my original argument stands; even if you are ignorant enough to believe this is possible at idle, it would ALSO do it while it was driving (until the engine warms up).....

      Cylinder wash down is a real thing and can be exacerbated by idling. It’s not a super common problem for most engines but it it can be catastrophic if conditions are right. The mechanic in the video is Dave of Dave’s Auto Center, one of the country’s most respected engine rebuilders and automotive shops. Dave and The Car Care Nut have excellent videos explaining and demonstrating cylinder wash down.

    I've been a Master Auto Mechanic for 30 years. This is absolute bull what this guy is saying.
    Absolute bull. Did I mention absolute bull. (insert brown symbol here) Warming up any car, modern or not is a "smart" thing... just like warming up before heavy lifting or exercise. A car will run and drive much better when it's warmed up.
    This guy lives back in the days of the carb. Back then, you sat in your car until it was warm enough that the choke turned off...other wise it would flood because your fouling spark plugs.....and then...wash out the cylinders and fuel foul/dilute the oil.
    Ask any person that's grown up back in the day with carb cars. They'll tell ya. I can tell ya.

      I have noticed on modern cars if it's not warmed up they will feel sluggish if you try to driv them right away. I believe in Massachusetts in cold weather you're allowed to idle your car for 5 minutes.

    If you change your oil with good oil on time and add a upper cylinder wall lubricant like Lucas into your fuel daily you can be rest assured you will be ok..

    The story is an absolute load of nonsense. These news outlets find people who are allegedly experts but have no actual clue. If you let an engine warm up the metal clearances expand slowly and evenly. If you start up and drive at high speed immediately, everything expands far too quickly and puts strain on components like bearings and positions. This could lead to an engine failure if it's repeated often enough.

    • @robertknight4672
      @robertknight4672 6 місяців тому +3

      I already don't like the way the car feels if I try to drive it right away in the cold too sluggish. I want to be able to accelerate out of an emergency if necessary.

    how is idling different from driving if the unburned fuel is diluting the oil? does it matter that during idle the engine is at a constant speed and is not changing the oil pressure in the crank, pin or valve galleries? does the stochiometric somehow change if the car is being driven vs at idle? does it matter that even the newest engines have piston rings that have not made good seal around the piston until the rings get above 200deg? does the PCV valve suddenly only work if the car is being driven and not at idle? If you ask me this is an environmental request masquerading as a mechanical one. Here in Colorado an environmental group tried to get a "puffing" law (no idling during cold weather ) on the books due to environmental impact and were not successful 3x- then the environmental group changed their tactics and got police depts to sign on to the "puffing" referendum as a way to combat car-theft and it passed with 60% of the vote.

    Combustion temps increase very fast even with an idling engine. There's no appreciable engine wewr or damage thqt occurs when you idle your engine compared to starting it and driving it immediately.

  • @01mustang05
    @01mustang05 8 місяців тому +4

    Like usual, that information is horrible and included faulty generalization when so many scenarios exist that do require idling and more like an oil pan heater and even metal can oil filter heater. Some places are so cold that engines are left to idle during really freezing cold periods or engines are heated with torpedo and torpedo like heaters and ducts or skirts temporarily placed around the base of the vehicle.

      Meanwhile the owners of electric cars are told to to warm up the car while it's still plugged in at the house so they don't lose their precious range from warming it up with just the battery alone. Mr Subaru has a good video on this argument about internal combustion engine cars idling to warm up.

    How does gasoline strip away oil and lubrication? There is still combustion going on with the pistons moving up and down in the cylinders, and at idle there is less gas being injected. There are vehicles used on job sites that idle for hours on end with 100s of thousands of miles on them.
