I loved this. I lived in Camberwell only for 5 years but I'll never forget them. It was a wonderful place. I lived in one of the high rises near Bowyer St. The neighbours were all wonderful. Once I locked myself out of my flat and this guy, huge fella, he busted it down and then repaired it for me! This was in the early 2000s.
My Mother lives on bowyer st or Wyndham road. In one off the tower blocks, she lives in Crossmount house, I now live in Peckham. It's good learning the history off different London area.
Lived in Kenbury st Camberwell til 1959..My parents met after war struggled like many others rented a few rooms..times bit hard then Bless them..had a high education thanks to them
I lived in Camberwell in the 1960s just off Coldharbour Lane. I went through there a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t believe how much it had changed. I didn’t recognise where I used to live at first until I reoriented myself with the few places I did recognise. Also Walworth Road between Camberwell and Elephant and Castle has changed a lot. I didn’t recognise that at first either. Thanks for the video.
Was raised here from 1976 to 1996. Back in those days it wasn't so gentrified, great pubs and cafe's though. I'm glad they cleaned up the Green, back when I lived there it was a dosser central and full of drunks. Used to drink in the Grove Tavern, The Silver Buckle, The Artichoke, The Hermits Cave, The British Lion and the Phoenix and Firkin. Great days I had there.
Lived in Grove Lane & Camberwell Grove after we got married (born in Bermondsey) in 1976 but we moved to North Yorkshire mid 90's. Loved Camberwell, always a buzz.
Very interesting and good to see the Hermit's Cave pub again. I went to the local grammar school, Wilson'a, next to St Giles Church. I always thought I'd like to live in Camberwell Grove.
Hey DeWyne! Great series! I enjoy watching property/location type shows as I find them weirdly relaxing, and your "London travelogue" is a sleeper hit imo. I especially like how you show regular streets that people _actually_ live on rather than end to end landmarks. One thing- I caught the Mottingham episode on London Live the other day, and had to smash Shazam on that "Thaaaat way thaaaaat way thaaaaat way thaaaaaat way" (I call it!) riddim. Found out the sample is from the Frightnrs, but I can't find your version on your bandcamp, would you please upload it here? It's 🔥!
I like this. Very much but it’s missing my favourite park, Myatts fields and could have touched on Burgess park? Another video opportunity perhaps. And I suppose there are so many different angles that you can focus on around Camberwell
Camberwell was the first district I lived since I arrived in London, lived there in a room for about 6 months just around the Burgess Park, eventhough people say that’s a kind of rough area I never had any sorts of trouble during my time there, but the irony of things😂 a year after since I moved on I was working as a fibre operative , just in the estate where that hill bakery located where you can see the gate next to it, the company’s van which I drive had a problem with the filter so it got stuck in there for more than a day before a technique from AA came on Monday afternoon to solve the issue , nothing happened during night, the next Monday van was parked just in front of the bakery as they’re closed for that day, me and my mates continued to work, suddenly I went to the van to get a tool and some thief splashed the doors lateral window in plain daylight and took my bag ( only had food inside) as we work with fibres and electrical tools and we was inside the 2 block estate we couldn’t hear anything. There’s a pizzeria just metres away from the bakery with outside cameras but the angle couldn’t spot that part o the van which was broken, but nonetheless I’ll always have a fond memory of Camberwell as it was the first place where I lived as I was getting settled in London and I quite enjoyed it. Love your videos man, as I work for a fibre optic contractor company our work is 100% done outside so we get to work in various areas of London to get fibre to the housing estate and main roads as well, so I connect with your videos as I’ve had a taste of being in the area of most of them you had covered 😀
Enjoyed that, although quite misfortunate. Sorry to hear it mate. Glad you bounced back though and that you can relate closely to this content. If you ever get some grandkids, save this anecdote for them too!!
No point in checking out my old manor, it's not there anymore. I used to live in North Camberwell, just south of the Old Kent Road. I went to Cobourg Road primary school, and my playground was the bomb sites left after WW2. There wasn't much in the way of grass, now there's Burgess Park. It covers the whole area. My first 'local' was The Beehive, I lived 4 doors from it. Sometimes drank at The Queen in Neat Street. I sang in the choir of St. Marks Church, opposite the school, and attended the boys club there. It's now North Peckham Mosque. Noels pickle factory was next door to it. No-one had a bathroom in those days, so once a week we'd traipse up Neat Street to Wells way where there was a bath house and laundry. Also a library. I don't go there anymore. No point, there's nothing there for me to remember. I moved out when I got married in 1968. First to Crystal Palace, then to various addresses until settling here on the south coast between Worthing and Brighton. Been here over 40 years now. I miss the friends I had then, but not the place. As I say, there's nothing left... The GLC saw to that. They cleared up an eyesore, but in doing so, created another one to take its place.
Sorry guys. Have to disagree. The ethnic background music in this series i found really " haunting". Different sounds for Different areas of London. I'm hooked, as its so informative.
Lived in Camberwell from 1946 when I was born until 1958 when we moved. Never got over it. I still miss our house there and I’m 78.❤❤❤

Lovely video but the way the woman was repeatedly saying “that way” painful and ruined it. What you had to say was more important than her singing
Agreed! Loved the video, but the music was very, very irritating. Diabolical! I had to keep turning the sound off!
I was reading the comment soon after is when I heard the females vocals repeating “that way” I just bust out laughing lol 😂 😂
It's AWESOME lol
I hate to appear nitpicky, but that butterfly is a Monarch butterfly, not a Camberwell Beauty.
