The FBI Ballistic Gelatin standardized test is based on Swine Body Tissue being the closest to actual Human Body Tissue. The FBI ballistic gelatin standard requires a minimum of 12” of bullet penetration and no more than 18” of bullet penetration.
We are using the Clear Ballistics 10% FBI gelatin block. We are testing Hornady, Winchester & Federal 9mm Self Defense Hollow Points that are AFFORDABLE and WIDELY AVAILABLE at the big box stores around the country.

@@AnthonyBattagliaPTEhey could you test and Underwood's 147gr xtp ammo for us?
I was with Hornaday a few years ago shooting critical duty 9 mm. It was shot into uncovered, jeans, leather coat, auto body and glass. All went 14 to 16 inches. I carry the Hornaday, Speer gold dot and plain Jane Remington. I carried the Remington 50 years ago in bad places and it worked well. My 45s are loaded with hydro shocks.
Hornady Critical Defense is what I carry
I run Federal 124 HST+P in all my carry guns both compact and sun compact. Thank you for taking the time to preform this tests.
I used to swear by Gold Dots until I got shot by a federal 124 gr HST, now I carry them in all my handguns
I carry Federal HST 147grn in my 19X and my wife’s G26. I’ve hunted with them as well very successfully. They are great. Awesome video brother!
Same here ! Accurate in my 226 and 938 sigs. Load 147 gr Hornady xtp’s for practice.
Standard pressure 147? What kind of game is it capable of taking?
Same here. Fed HST 147
Federal HST 147 gr is my go-to when I can get it, but I wouldn't hesitate to carry any of them. All 3 will get the job done. I appreciate your patriotism and the effort you put into your videos. Keep up the great work!
Right on. Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours.
I use Federal HST 124gr +P in 9mm. I also use bonded GS 124gr +P 124gr. Golden Saber was not great but the QC is very good; 2020s. I have some PDX1 9mm bonded too but the HST, Golden Saber 124gr +P is ✅️.
I’m running Underwood 124 +p+ in my p226 and my p239. Both are extremely accurate in my pistols and have seen what it can do on a coyote from a keltec sub . It was unbelievably devastating
I, as well like Kevin Underwood offerings.I use the 90 gr. Extreme Defender which is not a hollow point.
Lol +p++++ppp+++++...
Get a .357sig
I’m going to paraphrase Jeff Cooper he was called into a defensive shooting case testimony.
The discussion was why would you Carrie hollow point bullet since they are so deadly. He said that they are not deadly, more people survive being shot by hollow points the ones shot with ball ammo normally run or crawl off and die. While the ones shot with hollow point get medical treatment at the scene.
If one doesn’t use layered clothing first with these jell-o tests, then the bullet tests are irrelevant. Passing through clothing first, really tells for the most part how the bullet probably will perform in real life.
This video is a joke, and completely irrelevant.
Well I guess we know how it works against naked attackers…lol
Here in Portland tweakers are usually naked! 🤗

124gr Underwood +P
Federal 124gr +P HST.
Sig X-Macro TacOps 4.3" threaded barrel.
Slowly starting to become one of my favorite channels, I carry a 19X most days with 147gr Speer gold dots idk if they’re any good but my police officer buddy told me that’s what he uses.
Glad you are here. Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours.
147 gold dot is one of the best
Many PDs and state LE use Speer Gold Dot. I was told by a smaller PD sgt, 2010s they buy Speer Gold Dot because of the price. Also CCI Speer offers low cost training FMJs.
I carry Federal HST 124gr +p in 9mm
Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours!
Guns are dangerous.. stop carrying them..
I carry 50 cal
Solid choice
I have been shot by 4 9mm rounds, 2 federal hollow points and 2 Barnes xtp solid copper. All at the same time. I was not the aggressor. First round was a federal HST. Entered the right side of my neck and exited the right side. Second round was a Barnes xtp solid copper that hit my back left lower most rib, did not exit. Third round was another federal HST that hit from the rear and took out my kidney, did not exit. Fourth round was a Barnes xtp solid copper that fractured my sacrum and barely exited just above my pubic bone, it was found in my clothing when the paramedics cut my clothing off. Bullets period will stop someone, hollow points might save lives. I would probably have bled out with fmj. Still have a copper petal in my back and multiple fragments in my neck. Makes for a fun time at the airport, especially with a colostomy bag. Metals and liquids raise a lot of flags for them
What happened to get you shot if I may ask?
I carry Hornady Critical Defense.
Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours.
I use 9mm 115gr Speer Gold dot in the Sig XCarry and Hornady 115gr Critical Defense in the Shield plus. Thanks for the upload. Good info.
For my 3 inch barrel, Sig V Crown 124gr. standard pressure. 3.7 inch, PDX-1 124 grain +p, 4 inch 124 grain HST, 4.7 inch 147 grain Winchester Ranger.. In 40S & W, 165 grain Critical Defense or 180 grain HST. 357 SIG 125 grain V-Crown. 357 Magnum 125 grain Critical Duty. 38 Special 135 grain +p Gold Dot, for 380 ACP Barnes Tac-XPD. Long time-no see Anthony. Last time was a few years ago when you were demonstrating the FusionPac holster.

Speer gold dot 124 +p. The perfect self defense load
I use Liberty Ammo in 9mm, 50 Gr at 2000 FPS, and 45 ACP, 78 Grain at 1900 FPS. Best EDC ammo I have ever carried, shot and tested!
I used to carry Civil Defense for my trade in, Glock gen 4 21 .45acp. 2010s. Some say Liberty Ammunition is not great for general carry, LE use. It is powerful 💥. My cousin uses .357sig Civil Defense in his SIG 320 pistol. It has high KE levels, fast vel.
Liberty in all my handguns (except 44mag). I don’t see how you can look at the gel tests and think there is better
Liberty ammo blows away the competition by far, best ammo ever made, wish I gould get more
@@WesD808Would you say it’s better then Federal Hst 124 grain and what Liberty ammo would you recommend
Liberty Civil Defense all the way!!!
I'm using Defender 9mm 147 gr. jacketed hollow point (Subsonic). Inexpensive but, from what I've seen from gel block tests, does an acceptable amount of damage.
My favorite round for 9mm,
My wife and I use Federal HST 124, 147 grain 9mm hollow points in our carry pistols. Also have 230 grain HST in my 1911 45 acp pistol.
Federal HST 124gr +P for me. Hope I never have to test it in a real situation. But if I do, I feel confident it will perform.
I often load my Glock 26 gen 5 9mm, my M&P 2.0 or my used Glock 22 with 9mm HST 124gr +P. I use KKM barrels or LWD 🐺 Alpha. Federal Premium has good QC & many LE agencies use HST.
I carry Liberty civil defense and/or Federal syntec self defense (blue synthetic)
Never carried the three you have here. My carry load for a long time has been Federal 124 grain HSTS in either standard pressure or +P. I still carry these in my compacts but for my sub-compacts I have just recently switched to Underwood Xtreme Defender 90 grain +P+ loading the Lehigh bullet.
Good deal. Thanks for commenting! Good bless you and yours.
Looks like we think alike !
Try Corbon 115 grain +P+....a very fast round.
Winchester had a decent temporal cavity shortly after impact that would’ve caused a lot more tissue damage, dumping almost all of its energy immediately. Despite continuing to travel.
Call me old school but I still use Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +p or some old Winchester black talons. I like Federal HST as well 👍
Those are good, I’ve just never found them at a Big Box store. Thanks for commenting! Good bless you and yours.
Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P is what my wife and I have loaded in our Glocks for EDC. I trust it. Very good track record.
@@AnthonyBattagliaPTE God bless you as well.
Don't use the Talons for self defense. Only shtf because they're illegal.
Winchester Ranger 124 Grain Plus P. This is a street proven round. I know first hand the lethally of this round !
I carry FEDERAL 147 Grain HST. EXCELLENT accuracy and performance.
I've been using 115 gr Sig Elite Performance V-Crown with a Sig P365 and P365XL. But that was mainly because that was what my LGS was reliably stocking. Now that the selection of available ammo is greater I'm considering switching to a 124 gr +P cartridge.
Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours!
I've been told V-Crown bullet is made by Speer . That's why it probably performs very well. I've had good luck with 147g V-Crown
@@seanwhite304v-crowns are made by sierra
I carry Federal HST 9mm 124gr & 147gr. The majority of gun reviewers who do ballistic gel testing on youtube. The Federal HST always performs well in full-size, compact, and sub-compact. I also carry Speer Gold dot & Winchester PDX1 in the same grain.
Advice on carry ammo. Carry what your local law enforcement carries or something similar.
I use remington 9mm 124g bonded golden Saber. And have tested them extensively.
Suggestion, since you are attempting to create a real world situation. I would suggest you wrap the gel block with a T-Shirt followed by a Fairly Heavy Flannel Shirt. I think that would give us a much better representation as to the actual "penetration" of the bullet.
My personal favorite Ammo for self defense is: Winchester “Defender” 9MM +P 124 Grain!!
HST all day whether it's 147 or 124
I run 115gr hornady critical defense ftx
To ensure barrier blindness, I carry the underwood extreme penetrator in 9mm for my edc. For hiking, I carry the same in 10mm.
ANY round can be 'deadly'. The REAL question is: 'Will it reliably STOP an aggressor?'
Big fan of the 115 grain of Hornity easy to control and minimal by pass
I use federal HST, but I feel comfortable and have used Rem 115 green box hp with good results..
Loved the information. I have been using Hornady Critical Defense and it seems to be very accurate ammo.
If I were to EDC a 9mm. I would use Sig V Crown 115g JHP. My EDC is a G33. Defense ammo of choice is Underwood 125g JHP. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Thanks for the video.
For personal defense, I shoot 147 grain JHP Federal Premium Personal Defense, Hornaday, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Silvertip, or Remington bonded. It just depends on what I can find.
In 2023, most larger brand 9mm JHPs are available. Retail or online. Most US law enforcement 🚔 buy, use Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot or Winchester Ranger T: Ranger One.
It would be interesting to test all this carry ammo against an Alaskan thick jacket. It is way more thick than 4 layers of denim. There are so many COLD places here in the USA. Knowing if these projectiles will also work against extremely heavy clothing is really important.
That's a good idea. God bless you and yours. Thanks for commenting.
@christopherlindloff8331 If I am not mistaken, bonded projectiles are designed to stick together in 1 piece, so it will depend on what kind of bullet they shoot. However, I agree with you. It would be very interesting if he could attach a package of pork ribs to the gel. So it will be the car door, then ribs, then gel. Thanks for the idea.
Do you live in alaska? Because I do and my jackets are definitely not denser than 4 layers of denim. High insulation clothing is nothing more than a synthetic shell lined with down, poly, or other synthetic fill. Sure you can get a fur jacket that’s got more “beef,” but I rarely see anyone ever wear something like that because it’s just impractical.
@E.J. Addler Really? Every SINGLE video I have watched from Alaskan Balliatic in the snow, he is wearing one of those FUR jackets. So it doesn't look "impractical" to me. Are you just trying to deviate reality, or are you just in denial and don't want to see the test of the projectiles YOU use and how they perform?
Haven't ever had to use it thankfully. But I've been using shooting Winchester white box 115g jhp. All because it's budget friendly and around where I live I was able to pick up a couple boxes of 50 rounds for $19 a piece
I’m a big fan of the Speer gold dots in 9mm also carry federal HST in my sig 365xl , now in my Glock 30s I carry 185 grain Winchester silver tips ,
Just say no to JHP. Use Underwood Xtreme Defender 9mm
I’ll have to check it out!
Fort Scott actually makes solid bullet that tumbles
I use the ninety grain myself😎plus p plus
I have some of the 90gr Underwood, but in my carry guns I use the 68gr.
So how many naked threats will you shoot? You should at least place some clothing in front of that gel. Summer and winter clothing
I actually have all of these, and while I don’t have ballistic gel, I do shorts couple rounds of them periodically to refresh my confidence that they will feed and fire without malfunction. I keep a stock of not less that 100 rounds of each. For monthly range shooting practice I just use ball type, aluminum case. Thanks for the post.
Federal Premium LE 147g HST is what I primarily use . I've also used Sig 147g V-Crown .
135G is my favorite weight but HST does not come in 135g . Hornady Critical Duty comes in 135G but that performance isnt as great compared to HST or V-Crown
Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours.
I switched from Federal 124 gr. Punch to Liberty 50 gr. Civil Defense for edc and it makes a HUGE difference in weight; so much more comfortable. Lighter round that's almost twice the speed (1,100 fps vs. 2,100 fps) and 50%-70% more accurate out of my Ruger LC9 based on the groupings I've seen at the practice range. Not sure I'll ever switch back but I do still use 147 grain Federal HST for in-home defense with a 9mm. I know a lot of people like the Hornady Critical defense/Duty but I've ever only liked it in .357 Mag for my 6" Taurus revolver. Not much of a fan of their flex-tip in other calibers.
I'm truly asking but do those "Liberty" rounds only have ~40% of the gunpowder but go faster!? AND more accurate (main thing I'm interested in as I've only shot low-quality fmj and I still haven't gotten home defense ammo) sign me up! I'll google it but just in case is there a specific thing I should look up? Thanks in advance, I know a bit about guns but it wasn't till recently I saw or read something that made me decide to just "bite the bullet" and buy some defense rounds.
@@Johnnylowfive They’re rated +P so I doubt they’re loaded with less powder

Underwood Extreme Defender. I’ve shot them all and I’m so happy that a friend turned me on to this ammo. Good stuff…

I carry liberty,9mm +p 50grn at. 2200ft In And Hornady critical defense 115grn
I use IMI die cut. It may not be best, but at between $0.42 /round, it is affordable to train with.
I’ve been carrying the Federal 147 gr HST for years. Very accurate and manageable recoil. I keep an extra mag loaded with Underwood 147 gr hard cast if I would ever be in a situation we’re over penetration is better as in going through a barrier.
If ever you do another test, it would be great to replicate clothing.
A lot of big name hollow points fail when shot at cloth+gel.
Tools&Targets channel has a lot of vids showing this.
I'm gonna check it out. Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours.
I've noted that the multi-fabric test is more difficult to pass than the 4 layers of denim test. Paul Harrell uses the "New and Improved High Tech Fleece Bullet Stop", showing you just how well clothing can stop a bullet. Living here in MinneSnowta, where people wear multiple layers of clothing in the winter, makes me choose cartridges more carefully. Almost any JHP will expand properly when your attacker is naked. Put a few layers of clothing on the person and the bullet might not expand properly. Especially if you have a short barreled pistol like my P365 with a 3.1" barrel.
@@PierceThirlen2 Sig Sauer makes range and defense ammo specifically for the P365. They call them 365 FMJ and 365 JHP. You should check them out.
@@pseudonym5872 This 365 Ammo has poor expansion after going through denim. I suspect that Sig is using the identical V-Crown bullet that they use in their regular Elite performance ammo. Paul Harrell demonstrated the 365 ammo has a lower muzzle velocity than the Elite performance ammo. The 365 muzzle velocity is just too slow for the bullet to reliable expand. Here is a guy with a YT video demonstrating the poor expansion: "SIG 365 9mm Ammo Review -Great Expansion But I Still Won't Carry It for Self Defense - Denim Failure" by mixup98 - Jul 30, 2022.
I like tools and targets videos but I think he uses too much fabric think about it in the summertime most people are wearing t-shirts or a light shirt, now in the wintertime people are going to be wearing heavier clothing then it makes sense to see what your bullet will do then.
That being said I would love to see him do some videos with just a t-shirt
My ammo depends on what I’m carrying, in warmer weather I carry my 43x with hornady critical defense and in colder weather I carry my 47 with hornady critical duty
I have been carrying Federal HST for carry rounds

Glock 19X with Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P

The federal, like the hornady took too long to dump the majority of its energy based on the temporal cavity.
Remember, the fbi’s 12-18” requirement is if you were to shoot through the arm to enter the thorax.
Not a self defense situation.
I prefer the Underwood Extreme Defense rounds to all H.P. rounds for a few good reasons.
Speer Gold Dot LE 124g +P

Appreciate your video. Very good information. After watching several video's comparing various 9mm SD ammo choices > after watching Tools and Targets Gel tests comparing Critical Defense vs Critical Defense Lite > the Lite was soooo close to same as the other AND recoil noticeably less with the Lite > I decided when carrying my Ruger Max 9 > my SD Carry Ammo is Critical Defense Lite. Thanks for posting this. God bless....
All of my mags for my defensive tools (smallest mag is 15 rounds thank you very much. I’m looking at you NY and California) are packed full of +p 124 grain Gold Dots and +p 124 grain Federal HST’s. I’m sure there are other great rounds, but out of all the tests I’ve seen I’ve never been swayed to change. Old habits die hard as well. Gold Dots were always my favorite, but lately, the HST’s have ever so slightly edged out the Gold Dots for me. Both of them don’t care nothing about a heavy clothing too! That’s the real test.
I have the Hornady Black in my Hellcat. In my daily carry Glock 19x, I use Hornady’s Critical Defense. And, I have my CZ P07 loaded with Critical Duty (by the way, is the same as the current FBI issue). Thanks for the content! ;-}. MM
Well, I have in my hoarded ammo stash 147+P federal HST, 135+P Hornady Critical Duty, 115 Remington green and white box and 115 +P+ Federal BPLE so I carry one of those.
Haven't gotten out that much but when I did I carried Sig Sauer JHP V Crown
I have some V Crown that I haven't tested yet. Thanks for commenting. God bless you and yours
45 acp FMJ for me, you worry about over penetration bs and I worry about the bullet coming out.
For the last few years I've been carrying Callaway ballistics 124-grain JHP expanding HP.
You can buy them for about $23 a box of 50
I have yet to see anybody do a good video on these rounds
Unfortunately, mediocre old tech HP's usually expand in BARE gel. FBI standard is 12 to 18" penetration, but they tst thru 2 layers denim, some fleece & a couple T-shirts. Wish you tested similarly, just 2 layers denim is a valid tst, 4 layers much tougher. Using short bbl pistol is the ultimate tst to see which ammo really shines.
Tip: look at Defiance 9mm 115 TCX

Thanks. The hydroshok has been around for many years and is good.l The 135 grain is relatively new and a very good weight for 9mm as you noticed.
Like your logic.
I'm subscribed after watching several videos. Thanks.
Underwood extreme defense, I believe is better than any hollow point.
Thanks. I would not carry Federal Hydashok. Old technology that has been eclipsed by many more modern bullet designs. Bonded bullets by virtue of the copper jacket being bonded to the lead projectile at the molecular level will typically exhibit greater penetration and less expansion in bare gelatin testing. I carry a Sig P365 and since it has a shot barrel which reduces velocity, compensate for that shortcoming by carrying Winchester bonded 124 +p rounds. Many tests indicate 124 grain as the minimum desirable bullet weight with the exception of solid copper bullets such as Corbin. I prefer bonded bullets simply because i don’t know what barriers i may encounter, and shooting at someone with heavy clothing and at oblique angels, along with bone structure may well require penetration that seems deep in bare jelly. As a law enforcement firearms trainer who has access to many different testing reports and conducted testing, as well, that is my opinion. I do like the research on this subject conducted by Drs. Martin Fackler, known as the father of modern wound ballistics, and Gary Roberts. It is an interesting read and available on the internet.
Yes CorBon, DPX was popular 1990s 2000s but the company was sold 2010s era & some say the QC went 📉. I carry, use Federal HSTs 124gr +P or bonded GS 124gr +P. I agree more modern 9mm bullets can do well in most lethal force events. People like Massad Ayoob helped guide armed citizens, ccw users in real T&Es, court cases.
Try the hydra shok deep 135 9mm It always expands
My home defense and my carry pistols both prefer Winchester PDX1. However, it’s harder to find so I use Hornady Critical Defense.
*2 on HCD ;
Depending on what caliber i am carrying 380 = underwood penetrator and defender. 9mm = sig v- crown or liberty civil defense 40cal = sig v- crown ,underwood defender, or Winchester ranger
I'm confused. Clear ballistics gel doesn't mimic organic flesh. Organic ballistic gel is what the FBI is referring to, not clear ballistic gel.

Remington umc 115 grr hollow point. Goes deep and expands
I use the interceptor by Ballistic machinist. In 9mm it is the the best 90grain hollow point I would recommend. Give it a test.
