  • In this video I will give you a real world common sense formula for calculating how much ammunition you should have on hand right now. This formula for ammo storage is based on the given possible scenarios that you would fall into where you would need ammo.
Your amount of ammo storage can be calculated based on 5 possible scenarios. The first being home defense. The second is community defense or preparing for an active shooter or some other small scale weapons engagement. Number three is mob violence. Number four is preparation for war (but we hope that never happens and let’s pray that it doesn’t). And number five you will see answered in the video.
These ammo buying and storage numbers are based upon a formula using a Primary, Secondary and Specialty weapon load out calculation as follows.
    Primary weapon ammunition needs:
Full combat load out = 7 full magazines.
    Example AR 15: 7 x 30 rounds = 210 rounds for a full combat load out.
Round that number up to 250. And plan for one use of 250 rounds each calendar quarter. 4 x 250=1000 rounds.
1000 rounds a year for four years planning = 4000 rounds.
    Secondary weapon ammunition needs:
Full combat load out = 4 full magazines
    Example Glock 19: 4 x 15 rounds = 60 rounds for a full combat load out.
And plan for one use of 60 rounds each calendar quarter. 4 x 60 = 240 rounds. Round that number up to 250.
250 rounds a year for four years planning = 1000 rounds.
    Specialty weapon ammunition needs:
Full combat load out = 3 full loads of your weapon choice
    Example 20 gauge Remington 870: 3 x 5 rounds = 15 rounds for a full combat load out.
And plan for one use of 15 rounds each calendar quarter. 4 x 15 = 60 rounds.
60 rounds a year for four years planning = 240 rounds or let’s just say 250 rounds.
So for the specialty example you would want to have 250 rounds of each specialty shell for your 20 gauge shotgun. Bird shot from number 2 down to number 6, buck shot and slugs.

Idk what your doctrine or financial allocation numbers look like, but having a 308 might be better than trying to make 556 do things that aren't really plausible for it. Even budget-tier brass 308 will outperform high quality 556. 70 cents a round vs. 1.40 a round... Starts to make more sense to just make/buy a new gun.

Never stop buying ammo. It doesn't go bad if stored properly and your children and grandchildren can use it if you don't. Buy a few hundred rounds per month if you can afford it. With our currency being deliberatly devalued, ammo may become a bartering tool in the future.

#1 rule of thumb ... 1,000 per FIREARM ! You read that correctly, 1,000 rounds per firearm/gun you own ! That’s what I was taught when I got into shooting & still go by that to this day ! As for stored ammo after you have your 1000 Rnds, store at least 5k rnds per firearm & do not use it ! That 5000 rnds is for shtf situation. If you reload your own store powder bullets primers & brass accordingly. Learn how many rnds per lb of powder you an make & store what you need according to your own way of shooting & situations you may think will happen ! Another thing to keep in mind is the type of ammo for your weapons. Different situations require different types of ammo. For example, green tip for the engagement that requires it. Frangible or varmint for home defense and/or CQB. Pointed soft point for hunting etc. FMJ/ball for practices. HP stuff, etc., etc.
    Best of luck to all...

  • @BlueRidgeCritter

Another masterpiece video. I do have one thing to add, if your spouse is also a shooter, you need to have more; maybe not twice as much, but at least some more (This also helps when they decide to go their own way and half of your ammo goes with them. But that's a different story for a different day 😂 👀 ). Obviously, we all have different financial abilities, but they are good numbers to strive for. I have always tried to keep at least 1000 rounds of each "battle" caliber for pistols, at least 1500 for the "main battle rifle", and at least 100 for the larger rifles (hey, 30-06 is expensive. Don't judge). And of course, as you said, with the .22, plenty. I'm also big on shotguns, I even keep one as my truck gun. So I do have at least 100 of varying 12 ga at all times. And what I do, as a practice, is I keep it in sealed storage, and when I go shooting, I always buy at least an extra box or two. And I put them into storage while shooting up the main amount that I bought. That way I'm always adding to it slowly.
Incidentally, I also save all of my brass and hulls, and have been getting powder, components, etc. and storing them. I don't reload right now, but I am trying to get the collection together to be able to do so if things get bad. I have reloaded in the past, so I have the ability.

Where you going bugout too? Your house is easiest to protect, unless you have a cabin deep in the woods. But everybody is going run to the woods also. Being on the move in a car etc which can get trapped in and ambushed easily is not the best option especially if you have a family. Need to look into home defense more than buging out. I used to be a bug out guy also until I started thinking about it more and more, what food will have to take, how going keep kids safe, veichles aren't bullet proof and are easy to disable, so many unknowns and uncontrollable situations bugging out. Where as a home defense situation is easier to handle and control and more comfortable for kids/family. More food can be stored, can make own energy production off grid options etc etc. Should think about it more. But if you live in a big city I understand wanting to bug out but just think of traffic jams also from all others doing same also. 🤷🏻‍♂️ leave cities now and save yourself.

That's if you pretend you're in a movie and just dump rounds indiscriminately in the direction of your attacker. If you are confronted by a superior force of ten or more people, you will lose a firefight no matter how much ammo you have. It should take you less than a hundred rounds a year to hunt meat, something you probably should be trapping instead of giving away your position by shooting. If you are in a group confronted by any military force, you can not defend yourself from high angle fire heavy machine guns or drones. Your best option in shtf is to NOT engage with ANYBODY. Much of the population is too old or out of shape to be running-and-gunning (myself included), so I think the 5.56 ammo would be fine at about 2k rounds. For the side arm, I would hold 3k-4k rounds at all times (and replace it as you use it). - I would start with a case of ball to get a foothold, then add some defensive ammo to get the total count up. - This is the most likely gun that will be utilized for the majority of situations and scenarios. Having this amount also will let you still make range trips when there is a temporary squeeze on the supply. (Like we have seen 2-3 times the past 10 years)
Concur on the .22LR - 7k-10k (even 20k and more, since it would be great trading material if it ever came to that)
For the shotgun, I would increase the holding on #6-#7 shot size, since it could be a primary tool for hunting small game.
For the slugs and buck, I think 2-3 hundred rounds of that mix would be plenty, as it will likely be used to just repel borders and not for tactical use outside the house/base camp.

Too much is never enough. I'd suggest looking for deals on reloading supplies-especially powders, and primers, and for the reloader with limited time-fully processed brass. Ammo prices now are low considering the state of the economy. I think any person who has steel #00 and even #000 buckshot would have no shortage of "friends".

2-3 combat loads (2 full combat loads loaded in magazines/clips, with one combat load in loose rounds. For both primary and secondary weapons). It's not really about how much should you stockpile- because you're NOT bringing it all with you. That's not logistically feasible. The key then, is to plan ahead, think about scrounging (i.e. "loot drops" LOL), cache's and bugout location(s).

Reloading is the way to go.
Not only is it fun to do, but also saves money and it’s a great way to learn about ballistics and what your particular guns perform best with.

I'm gonna say this if you have 1,000s of rounds you need to have it in multiple locations. If you are in a war situation you need to expect at least 1-2 of your supply places to be either taken or destroyed. If you have it all in one place one bad day can see years of preps go up in smoke or used by the other side against you.

Specialty rifle is, is also my primary it's in 6.5 grendel. I can use it for hunt, defense and offence. If it's SHTF it won't matter if it's HP, SP, or FMJ, but I stack all three. I have 2 backups in x39 and 5.56. As a reloader, I have components to allow for changing calibers, by simply stopping by my caches. Like you I stack 22lr and don't bother counting. Too old to be lugging around a shotgun or rifle. Most important is to find some water source if you’re out in the woods. All guns and ammo are useless if you can’t find water within 3 days. For my own peace of mind... I feel that 5-7000 rds per caliber (including training ammo) is the "sweet spot", therefore I limit my calibers... I also do most functional training with 22lr firearms, similar in style and function to my actual carry arms, ie 15-22 A/R and M&P 22 pistol... That is simply a cost effective way to stay sharp, and they function similarly to my actual firearms.
I also try to use NATO equivalents with the exception of .223... I prefer .308 & 300 blackout... Just prefer the ballistics over .223.

It would be great for hunting and long range personal engagement if necessary, but I would do everything to avoid gunfights because if it truly got that bad a wound would be eventually fatal anyway.
