  • Here’s an update on how my rubber tree plant and propagations are doing after pruning (cut in August 2020) because my tree was too tall.

THIS is the video I’ve been searching for. All the other videos showed the progress of the propagated pieces. I wanted to see the progress of the original stem. I just cut my tonight so I’m excited to see how it will grow.
    Thank you!

Finally, I've found my guru! 😄
Desperately need to prune ours and have been too scared to get stuck in. You've given me the confidence, woo hoo! 👍

So glad you did an update! You are the only person I have found so far who propagated the stick! Mine is growing roots but isn't actually growing vertically and I was starting to think I made a mistake by doing it that way. I think I might prune it to get branches, but I'm so nervous! I'm glad you were open about your nervousness in the last video.

Hi Erin! Your first brought me here! Not really knowing what to do, In the past I cut a few branches off my huge mother plant, stuck them right in soil and they actually grew. I had them outside for the summer I assume that helped. Now their getting really big and after watching your video I feel confident in chopping off some of the tops. Thank you for the update!

Thank you for the update (and the previous video) showing how simple it is to trim back a rubber tree. I have a rubber tree that started as a small plant and cut it a few times with no clue what I was doing. It's falling over from being too top heavy, so time to get the clippers out and follow your instructions!!

I can't wait to cut and prune my rubber plant. I guess I should have pruned it early on - I know I only had one plant when I started but now there are about 5-6 plants. I probably should have not let those grow but I'm going to cut them all back to be shorter except maybe one I will make it short but not almost down to the bottom. It was a plant I got for my brother's funeral. He was one of 6 kids so it is kind of strange - I have 6 trees in one pot plus a littler one that is just starting. I think I'll keep that little one starting but then I'll cut back all the other ones but maybe one of the other ones I won't cut back as much.

Great stuff - did you find that after you pruned it, the remaining plant was better able to hold its own weight after regrowth? Mine is 7 feet now and it keeps falling over. I'm less interested in propagating than I am in having a plant that can stand up on its own.

You’re right about leaving the leaf on the growing cutting - It’s what helps the cutting grow and was recommended by The Crazy Plant Guy.
Question - What do you do when the stems branching out get too long? If you cut those they will branch again, right? This is why I’m hesitant to trim my 5’ plant down yet.

Thanks Erin, My rubber tree is so Out of Control. I can't wait to prune and propagate it. Also any ideas on how to cut the trunk of the tree? The trunk is really big too.

We have just bought a huge rubber plant but I want to split it up. Did you end up splitting yours? If so can you make a video on how?

Hello! It’s hard to find Rubber Tree videos for my specific question, I’m hoping you or someone on here can help. I have an almost 5 ft rubber tree, it has 2 other babies in the same pot. The biggest tree is doing great but I’ve noticed the 2nd one’s leaves are curling and I’m thinking the 3rd one will probably do it too. Should I repot them all together into a bigger pot or separate them? I’ve had him for 2.5 years from a small plant, so there’s been good growth. He is next to a sliding door and windows, some morning sunlight and very bright during the day. I’m thinking of upping the fertilizer to monthly. We are in Southern California near the coast so not too dry here. Any input appreciated, Thank you so much!!

Do rubber plants survive outside? My husband said I should plant in the ground outside our house. We live in Wisconsin and it is fall right now. I don't think it would survive out there.

Idk I didn’t do anything extra special with this one. I think you have to find the right amount of lighting. Mine is a couple feet away from a bright window and the tree LOVES it. Oh and make sure to have supports/stakes!

Where did you put the bigger cutting in water or directly in soil? And did you cut its leaves or left them?
