I agree with all of your tips on confidence. I use to ride once per week, then added a lesson, and this was great but didnt really improve my confidence. Once I started riding 2 different stables, on different horses, as often as 4x and more per week, my confidence grew like wild fire and I have now bought my first horse. I still ride the same 2 stables on the weekends and use them as riding skill refinements ... also now I know a lot more, I am able to ask a lot more question from the more expereinced riders / owners. Good video thank you.
Carmella, I have watched dozens upon dozens of videos on every topic related to horsemanship, the care of horses, riding and training. Yours are the videos I enjoy most and learn the most from. Your humble and concise explanations are detailed enough to give me powerfully useful information that I can apply immediately with my horse, without overwhelming me with equestrian jargon and elitist attitudes which unfortunately are so common in this field. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am a far better rider, care taker, trainer and lover of my beautiful mount in large part thanks to you. Please continue sharing your wisdom, experience and advise in your uniquely refreshing manner.
What I'll always do, when I find something I don't feel confident in is going a step back. Always go a step back and ask yourself if you're confident in this one already and when you are, just do baby steps. And when you're not.. well, you gotta practise a little more until you can do the next step. Also bonding, groundwork, liberty. Getting to know a horse well and bonding with them automatically makes you more confident riding them.
This was a great video! I have a lifelong bucker. Funny enough, I came off dozens of times with no fear... until she reared and landed on top of me. Physically ok, emotionally destroyed. Confidence shattered. The best thing I did for my confidence was take lessons at a barn with many great well trained TB school horses. Learning new tips and skills, and realizing I COULD control these different gorgeous horses, gave me the confidence to ride mine. It was an investment in my most loved hobby, and worth every hour of OT I had to work to afford it.
i hate it i was forced to ride a horse in a bit it sucked i wasn't happy anymore i dropped out of riding lessons last year i hated it being there i hate that hobby i tried take riding lessons i tried it not working for me im out
I don't know how to drive and I depend a lot on my dad to take me to a horseriding lesson once every week. And yes I feel like I'm not improving much and want to ride more but I don't drive so it's hard for me to do anything more than a lesson every week. I don't know how leasing a horse works. Do you need to take care of it or do you just ride whenever you want with that horse and someone else will take care of it? Why do I have such a complicated hobby? 😫 I wish I was born on a horse farm 🥲 my grandparents all owned horses.. by the time I was born there were no horses left 😭😭 why me? My only chance now it to get married to someone who owns horses or has relatives that own horses. My dates will go like this: -hi! do you own horses?😃 -no?🤨 -this date is over!😐
I’ve been riding my horse bareback. She’s old, past thirty, and with her back sinking slightly my saddles don’t fit her no more. I don’t plan to get her a new saddle because her and I don’t do anything serious. Back when I was learning to ride her bareback I did a little trick to help. I don’t know if i can call it a trick. 😅 I promised myself no matter how scared I was I’d keep the correct posture to ride, because when I was scared I’d want to curl forward and hold her neck. I’d imagine that I have already fallen and I’d try to imagine hitting the hard earth and hidden rocks. Imagining and trying to believe in my head that I have already fallen made riding a lot less intimidating back then. ☺️ She’s old and stubborn but she has taught me so much. Now in her old age, I can’t go on any hard trails or any long hard rides but just being with her everyday has brought me so much happiness.
I have had my horse 16 years and I have become extremely nervous because he has gotten more anxious. He spooks easily just riding him in my pasture. He is extremely anxious on trail rides with other horses and starts jigging and spinning and running sideways. I have lost all confidence. I have spent thousands on horse trainers and am still at ground zero. One trainer had my horse for 5 months and I don't think he ever rode my horse. He kept saying it was me and not the horse, yet he never worked on trail rides with me or how to diffuse the situation when my horse spooked. Thank you for your tips. They are extremely helpful.
Im a pretty new equestrian and i rlly like that in my lessons i ride a lot of different horses like i always ride the same horse but sometimes i have to ride another horse so i am rlly confident with horses i don't know so i actually like that
I’ve grown up around horses but I havnt ridden a horse in a while I recently got a new horse and I’ve trotted with him already but I really want to canter with him but scared hes 16hh biggest horse I’ve ever had lol
Great video! I'm learning to ride on a cheeky, lazy, 1800lb draft horse that knows I lack confidence. So he has been bucking me off, and I got scared and started anticipating when riding or doing groundwork, which he definitely senses. So I'm excited to try your suggestion for having fun as it'll ease the fear. Riding is as big a mental and emotional game as it is physical!
Love your videos, looking to get back in the saddle after a bad accident with my bomb proof horse..to this day I'm not sure what happened. We got caught up in a thunder storm and not sure if he got spooked or slipped, he threw me , my foot of course got caught up, iherd my knee break on my way down but the I landed on that knee at shattered my knee cap..not to mention he was 18hh and I'm 4 11 lol any hoot, learning lots from your vids thanks sooo much
This really helped I started riding at 2 years off age I was winning and competing at hoys for the age 6 at the age 10 i started with the young horses breaking them and getting them ready for hoys for young riders ect at the age 15 I gave up I had alot on mentally and was depressed I'm now 24 so had 9 years out off it and i sat on my parent horse about a week ago and I was shaking I was so scared any more tips will help? X
i would start a bond with the horse first! i recommend brushing the horse , ground work or just a walk around somewhere 😄 horses can feel if ur tense when ur riding them so i wouldn’t start off with riding straight away just get more comfortable with that horse
my horse bucked me off a while ago and then i worked more and more on ground work even though she’s broke to ride but i rode her today and it gave me a relief
Nice video. I'm confident with geldings but I happen to now have this very smart independent minded mare, that I love. She's a challenge for me and at the same time I am now older with some health issues. Because of the age health issue thing I feel less physically confident. Maybe I should give up on horses all together at this point but I don't seem to be able to do that because I really, really love this mare. Thank you for this video.
You could stop riding but keeping your mare just for her company. Loving horses is not just about riding them, it's about loving their compagny and energy. :)
@@marie-lisamariercormier989 Oh how I know this!!! Lol. For 16 years I kept 7 horses and out of that 16 years I rode for 15 minutes. Lol. Having my little herd was wonderful. Two of the horses, including this mare were born here. All of the others except her and her father were very sweet and docile. I eventually got good homes for all of the others but I kept her because I am afraid some people may not understand her temperament and might abuse her. I was telepathic with some of the horses, but not with her. I am going to get help with her and get some training done so that she can get a good home. My health is not very good and I don't think I will be able to keep her for life, unfortunately.
I am sorry. I watched your clip about trotting but did not help me too much...I don't know how much should I lift myself, how to land. I kinda make a 1 -2, 3 movement. When I land my butt on the horseback I make a double bounce ( like a basketball ).
0:30 From riding a 12hh pony of my own* To riding my bffs 14.2hh pony misty she is very mischievous I fell off today lol To riding a 17.3hh cob * paddy the pony got past the gates at the end of the rainbow bridge on our birthday (we had the same birthday 13th march 2009) Collapsed moments after blowing his carrot cake candle and passed over the bridge. The sentence “get the machine his heart stopped!!” “I’m sorry darling he is gone” “1 2 3 GOO!” “There was nothing we could have done” broke me inside I was cutting myself in school and crying myself to sleep and I still have his mane and tail in his special box with his carrot cake in resin.
I loved this video. I'm 30 years since last on horseback, and I am just a little nervous about riding after SO LONG lol. This has helped me a lot ALL your videos are great teaching tools. Thank you!!
My riding instructor is saying every time my horse starts to get anxious that I'm supposed to lean backwards and grip with my legs and knees and if I don't I'm gonna get thrown off.. Also I started cantering like 6 months ago and I still can't do anything and I'm not sitting correctly, my instructor is not teaching me s about riding the canter. And I try to sit in a two point and she yells at me: "Sit back and heavy! You're too far out of the saddle." Even though she doesn't teach me how to do a full seat which seems to be what she wants. I hope everyone has a riding instructor that helps you learn how to ride correctly.
I ride westren with my twlve year old mare and we been improving in the outdoor arena and Iv been relying on my anxitey medication to get the confidence back four weeks ago I had a bad fall where I got buckled off into the black berry bushes into a fence and I pulled and muscle and got broken glasses and was out of the saddle for threeish weeks the first time I ever cantered I was on my first horse stardust I had enough trust in her that I let go of the horn but Iv been having bad anxitey and a confidence slump but I feel confident more and more not using the horn as much because I trust her with my life even only after three rides. Toughter she’s a paint American quarter horse and her canter is amazing it’s like the top of the rollercoaster for me
Great video, my horse lacks lots of confidence when trail riding alone and I also lack confidence after she reard and fell on top of me... Thank you for this video.

The first time I rode was at my job which is a horse trail ranch and I was surprised I got the job they said I can learn as I go but no one really “taught” me anything other than maybe how to mount from the ground but even then it was a figure it out yourself kinda thing. Hi Ella! The first thing I would do is make sure the horse respects my personal space, so if they strike out, they won't get me. The second thing I would do is every time the horse strikes out, I would lunge them around me until they get tired. Because a horse plays up doesn’t mean they are always lacking confidence. Many know exactly what they are doing especially to avoid work. I have a mare who decides on faking she is worried about a kangaroo jumping onto the arena.
