You can use the stirrup leather on his neck to also start teaching him to ride bridleless/halterless. You use the reins initially to help the horse associate the neck strap signals with the equivalent reins signals.

Something we always did when hacking with less experienced riders is take a leadrope with us so we could pony them if they didn't have the horse under control. You can roll it up and then attach it to the saddle if the saddle has rings in the back or you can put it around the horses neck like you did with the stirrup leather. A leadrope can also be very usefull if a part of your bridle breaks.

Thing to remember is a bag like this on your body has the potential to get you hung up if things get ranchy.

Growing up in fox-hunting's spiritual heartland of the English Midlands, if it's leather, it gets waxed or it will parch and crack. We've been doing it since time immemorial on tack, clothing, even the sofa. The only tack that doesn't get waxed is some old gear from 50 years ago that's stored in the garage and that on the rocking horse.

-On hacks or something pack a halter! Especially if it’s long or you take a break so they can eat without a bit and just in general just incase you bridle breaks mid lesson but you can’t get a new bridle you can detach the lead rope as a rein or smth
-When tacking up if you use a western saddle or a saddle that’s heavy put it on their side first then stop and continue it helps your arms!
-if your saddle is fit correctly you can put it by the head -if it’s not to heavy- and slide it and usually it just stops when it’s set right

My horse has the same problem with flies in summer as Tucker has. I even have a mask very similar to yours and in blue. But because, like Tucker, mine doesn't enjoy the mask being slid over his face I've cut it open on the underside and sewn velcro to it. So now I start putting the ears in, then quickly fit the eye mesh and close it underneath. It also makes the mask a tiny bit larger because it was tight.

I have a tip for dismounting and not breaking your ankles if you don’t want to risk messing up with the mounting block. If you take things slow when dismounting and figure out how your feet should land, it won’t hurt as much. I know from experience from being a short guy who likes to ride massive horses for whatever reason.

I would have only one issue with the getting your right foot into the right sturrup hack at 9:00, it’s that my horse often walks as I’m getting on and so I worry about falling because of not being on the saddle or have ping my weight properly distributed

    • @rachelmerz2122

My horse does this a lot, too, and I’m working really hard trying to correct her with this. Someone recently told me to pull the left rein towards me which in turn slightly tips her head towards me, and they are much less likely to walk off. It is working really well so far! 💜

Honestly when I first started I had rain boots with a heel (don’t recommend for long term or anything with cantering) they worked fine for intro but after that I upgraded to a boot with a heel from a standard shoe store . Those worked great for a while but when I started jumping I finally invested 150 into actual riding boots, I bought this pair from the brand auken and I love them! I bought a tall boot… they’re great in the pastures rain or shine(waterproof), it’s easy to clean and I prefer them to chaps . Also super comfortable for doing chores as well as riding.

Yes, your pony is very well behaved but I completely disagree with the way you dismounted, a, leaving your foot in the stirrup (if he moved off you'd be flat on your back
b, that wobbly tree stump - what are you thinking? A friend broke his ankle last year on the same thing as his horse spooked.
Come on, advise to dismount on a solid mounting block and never leave your foot in the stirrup, maybe that's western but you are riding in an English saddle.
