@sgav8r Im not upset just wanted to answer the question about being in Sigmas pocket. I have never picked up one of those lenses to use in my own personal bag. I own all Nikon glass for my FX Cameras. This is what I recommend, I recommend the nikon or canon glass if you can afford it or your a pro shooting on FX cameras. If you are just starting out and on a cropped sensor I fully recommend the third party lenses that are 2.8s or better for the savings. They have also gotten much better.
@sgav8r thanks for your comment. First off I have answered this many times via e mail and in other places people have asked. I have never used the tamron because tamron has never sent me one. Also I would appreciate you not reading into things and creating assumptions like I am avoiding the question. It seems like your trying to say that because sigma sends me lenses to test out I cant say a bad word. They dont pay me or advertise on my site. They make plenty of lenses I would never use.
I love your long reviews Jared. It's like a mini documentary and it's great to see you cutting out the irrelevant testing and charts that feature in so many reviews by others on the net. When you have time, I'd really like to see you do an in depth review of Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 on a DX body.
@andy5656 for the split seconds i do it its not a big deal. The issue is if your hanging it from your neck and using the lower end cameras you could possibly have an issue.
Jared, I just want to let you know that I have never fully watched a half our video on youtube until today. Usually stop watching after about 5 minutes. But your reviews truely are an exception. Thankyou soo much for a wonderful review!
@TheWhoppuh i was told the same thing when i started and wanted to shoot sports. And I bought the nikon 8-200 2.8. I think this lens is perfect for starting out with sports and you do not need OS.
@AlTyler138 I select my focus points myself or lock in and recompose depending on what I am doing. I think this blows the first generation way out of the water.
I use this lens on a Canon EOS 5D mk ii. I'm quite happy with it, as I enjoy the range and the f2.8 aperture, with its solid build and very good IQ. Of course the Canon L-Series will take you one significant step higher in terms of quality, but this Sigma is already very good. The HSM motor feels a little bit slow compared to a Canon USM. I've set AF microsetting to +2 on a scale that goes from -20 to +20, which means front-focus is minimal.
I've watched this video 3 times. I had a 80-200 f2.8 AF-D, but sold it because i just picked up a used 70-200. The 80-200 was nice, build quality and optically, however, focusing was noisy and it would hunt heavily at times. For indoors, which i do a lot of, i wouldnt suggest, but outdoors it is amazing. The sigma looks nice, since it has HSM, and its quality is amazing. Stop looking at charts, and shoot. Sharpness isnt the only thing that matters sometimes.
Hey Jared, How come you don't talk about Nikon D5000. I want to know how the sigma lenses hold up with Nikon D5000 epically for low light situation and sports photography.
Hi Jared, thanks for considering us users with a cropped sensor. It would be easy to stick with the "Top Shelf" gear that your most accustomed to. I have a Canon 70-200 F4L for my 50D which I will stick to, but I have to admit that the 2.8 aperture is tempting. Keep bringing the great reviews.
Hi Jared and all people ..i have canon 550D and in comparison to L versions from canon, this sigma is only litle bit behind ..definitely better than kit lenses and ultra zooms like 18-200 and crap. I am very happy with it ..i took some journalistic pictures and newspapers bougt them ..i was shooting birds on fly and the focus worked perfect smooth..definitelly happy that it was my first telephoto lens and it is still doing its job very well!!
I gotta be honest, I think you convinced me. Very informative and covers most of the bases that I would be considering in my inner tumult. Right now it's not a lens that I particularly need while I'm on work travel in DC (few more months), but when I get back to Southern Cali and the national parks that it affords me, it will be the first lens I get. D7000, BTW, until I improve and the D3 gets an upgrade. At $800...heck, maybe I'll get it even before I go back.
Hello, JaredPolin, How can i use the SIGMA 70-200mm f/2.8 USM II Macro in a Canon EOS 5d Mark II or Nikon D3S? These Cameras have diferent mount, How can i use this lens in both, in Sony, and Pentax? What do i need? Please, i don´t understand how i can use this Lens in 5 diferent mounts?. Thanks.
Whats your take on the new OS version of this lens? I didn't see a review listed in your videos and I'm interested in your take. Just found you and am enjoying your work!
I just bought this lens for my Canon 50D and it is great! I found the same thing, with my AF and fast movement (my dog running toward me from 100ft) it had trouble keeping up but It is bad ass everywhere else. I love it, this and my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 are my two main lenses now.
Hey Jared. Have you tried Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 OS HSM lens? I'm considering to buy 70-200mm lens to Nikon, but I can't decide should I buy the version II or the OS version. Which one would you recommend? I shoot sports, portraits, concerts and etc etc. and also video with my D300s. By the way, keep it up FRO!!
Thanks for the review,I just got the OS version for my D7000 and I have to say it handled great at a gymnastics meet I went to. Wanted the Nikkor but the extra bucks held me back. Do you think I should have held out and got the Nikkor? Would I have seen the differance,I am happy with the OS version just hope I wont regret not going with the Nikkor. I just do this as a hobby, and the OS was not cheap. But just could not get myself to go for the extra money. Thanks again for the review.
I just bought this one and took some test pictures! I'm a bit shaky since i've never had such a heavy lens but I hope I will get some great pictures. I don't know about the macro though, I find it like it's not reaaaally macro. Just a lot of close up, macro for me is VERY close and you could really see the details in all the objects.
Hi Jared I was thinking to buy the Sigma 70-200mm until I saw the Nikon 80-200mm which lense you think is better. Thanks for your videos. I like the yellow shirt.
@NicholasGervin I use to own a D5000 and i bought the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens for it and it works great and it can take some very nice photo without a problem, i then ugrade to D7000 using the same lens and the result is even better.
Shalom dear Jarred, will you please review the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM any time soon? I'd love to know your opinion on that particular lens. Praise to you for spreading your knowledge wealth, all the best to you and family
hey jared, great review but one question though, does this lens bother you by not having stabilisation function?does it really make a differences shooting fast moving object without OS?btw, nice afro dude.
Jared, im pretty new to photography and im really interested in sports photography. This lens seams like it would be great but i was also told that it would not be good for me because im just starting out and the cheaper 800$ version doesnt have the OS. what do you have to say?
Dear jared , why is that all Sigma lens have macro mentioned on them ? Earlier is saw another video review of a Sigma 17-70mm macro sigma lens ? what exactly are macro lens ? is this Sigma lens that u r testing now similar to the Nikkor 70-22mm lens which is not a macro lens ?/ Could u kindly clear these doubts for me ?
@JaredPolin Hey there, thanks for the review this was awesome. I am seriously considering buying this for a Christmas present for myself ;o) however, I just want to check whether this will fit/operate fine on my Nikon D40? Basically I have the following: - Nikkor Kit lens 18-55 - Nikkor 50mm 1.8 Prime I would like to take shorts from further away of portrait subjects, and also take a some cool long(ish) distance shots with a new lens. Would this lens be the best next purchase? Thanks!
Hi Jared, my question would be; can this lens replace Nikon 85mm f/1.4 ? I`m on a budget and I`d love to have a lens that I can use in sports and concerts too. Does this give same performance that I will get from nikon 85mm for portraits? Thanks
Thanks for reviewing this lens. I have the T2i and am looking for a telephoto for it. I am really leaning towards this lens. I am unclear about alout of blogs that say this lens front focuses or is just shy of "tack-on" focus. Are they talking about the first version or this version II? Is the IS version unnecessary, I have reasonably steady hands?
Hi Jared... Thanks for reviewing this cheaper alternatives. As much as I love nikon equipment its price is prohibiting for me now. I trust your word on gear, because you dont speak that non sense ultra detailed things we are used to on the net. Keep them coming please! :)
How are you doing your focusing in the gig, are you constantly changing your focus points ?? Also lens looks great, how does it compare to the mark 1, is there much difference..?
Hi Jared... I heard about the new updated Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM that is sharper and with OS.. I wonder you can make an update review on that if you have that lenses. Thanks.
ive been looking at 70-200 f/2.8 lenses. the sigma's deffinatly look the best but i know there are 2 different versions. one for $799.99, and another for like $1,400. money's kind of tight so i was woundering if there is a huge difference in each lense, cause i would rather go with the less-expensive lense
I'm just starting out in Photography, looking to really expand my hobby into a way to make a few bucks and also get access to some nice events and capture amazing images in the process. I started out with a Nikon D3300, upgraded to a 5500 with the 18-50mm kit lens. First lens purchased was a Nikon 50mm 1.8, second lens was a Rokinon 8mm Fisheye that I love to get versatile with and now I'm thinking about picking up this Sigma 70-200 2.8. Would you say I'm going in the right direction equipment wise for portrait, sports and concert photography?
For portraits or sports or events, an f2.8 lens like this is a better choice than an f4 or 5.6 even if those zoom to 300., especially on a crop dslr where 200 is already pretty long. Better performance in low light, and better out of focus backgrounds.
HI Jared, Ok, I know you touched upon the subject in the video, and others have left comments, but why exactly do you think the Sigma is a better buy than the nikon 80-700 afd? Obviously with it's HSM and the nikon being an af-d, the focussing speed will be much better with the sigma. Also the sigma has image stabilisation. But what about image quality? From what I've read, it seems that the 80-700 is sharper... Thanks
Jared, I am looking to get a great 70-200 2.8 for motorsport photography (track days). Do you think the AF on this unit will be fast enough to handle cars at 70-120mph?
Jared, thanks. Been looking at loads of reviews. This one has me sold. I'm in Europe and it's price changes between countries. Think I'll scoot off to Germany and buy it. Cheers! :-)
nice review! i just want to ask, this can be also use as a macro lens right? what about the new version with OS??? im not really sure because i saw some reviews of the 70-200 2.8 os and i think it doesn't have macro...thanks!
Hey JaredPolin , I am a beginner in full frame photgraphy, and think you can help me with this. What would you choose as a sharpest lens (price wise of course) like 17-50mm new Sigma or around that focal length for my Canon 1ds ii ? TNX
lo matey watched most of yer clips one way or another just looking into this lens as for me at the moment this price is serious money .... looking through your shots in flickr the IUSO is anywhere from 800+ I use a D300 what do you reckon to the noise from this at 1600+ persoanlly when i shot a friends wedding i almost cried at the high ISO ones as the noise was IMHO horrific but the did not seem to mind once i had played about with them
@TheShanahg Just ordered mine, had to check out my finance from buying the Canon ef 85mm f/1.8 XD. But all hyped about the Sigma, and wanna thank again Jared for the kick butt fro review! Let the Fro Be with you!
Hi :) are you going to do a review of the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 ex dg os hsm model? I hear its really good and i would love to hear what you think about it :)
This is the best review ever. Because you I am going to buy this lens. What do you think about the Nikon 18-105mm VR kit lens that comes with the d90 and the d7000?
HI Jared I just got this lens a few day ago. I notics that all your concert pictures is taking some where around 1/125. How do you keep the lens steady with no IS, i have real problems getting a descent picure below 1/400 Do i need to spend more time in the gym.? :) or what is your secret.?
@NO0Bstatus The cheaper one doesn't have stabilization, and it's a little bit soft when autofocusing in to 200mm. That shouldn't be a problem. Just zoom in, autofocus, and manually focus a bit more. The expensive one is a better lens, however it's not a completely noticeable difference. Good lens!
Dear Jared, I'm a photography student from the Netherlands, i'm Thinking about buying the 70-200 f2.8 from sigma for my nikon D2x. But i see that you use a lot off hi ISO, my D2x gifs a lot of Noise when i go beyond iso 300, can it there be something wrong with my camera?? ore is it normal with the D2x???
on canon or nikon you should use the os version. for sony you can simply buy the non-os. i tried it and the built in stabilizer does its job very well.
If I shot at that low shutter speed on my d3200 all I would get is a blurry mess. I just ordered one of these used and without OS I'm not sure if I can hand hold it at that low shutter speed.
@eq5uinox I have no heard any issues, i do not see why it would have an issue.
@4look4rd its a full frame lens but no matter what lens you put on your d200 you still multiple it by 1.5 on all cropped sensor cameras on nikons end.
@sgav8r Im not upset just wanted to answer the question about being in Sigmas pocket.
I have never picked up one of those lenses to use in my own personal bag. I own all Nikon glass for my FX Cameras. @andy5656 for the split seconds i do it its not a big deal. The issue is if your hanging it from your neck and using the lower end cameras you could possibly have an issue.
Bought this lens a few days ago for very cheap. For the money this lens is still worth getting in 2019.
Jared, I just want to let you know that I have never fully watched a half our video on youtube until today. Usually stop watching after about 5 minutes. But your reviews truely are an exception. Thankyou soo much for a wonderful review!
@ArnanCarmelo yes it will.
@IndigoChannel1 you cant, its made in 5 different mounts one for each camera.
@Thunderhorse01 the x should be good up to about 800 or 1000.
@TheWhoppuh i was told the same thing when i started and wanted to shoot sports. And I bought the nikon 8-200 2.8. I think this lens is perfect for starting out with sports and you do not need OS.
just got me my 70-200mm f/2.8 today. It is pure awesomeness. Happy New Years!
@moviemyles100 yes it will. But on the 5d id consider the canon lens.
@Alfredochocano16 compared to a kit lens yes
@eliott767 the sigma at this point, i mention that during the review as well.
@DrumeX its the same as on all the other cameras.
@AlTyler138 I select my focus points myself or lock in and recompose depending on what I am doing. I think this blows the first generation way out of the water.
@wronkatonk i just got a review unit so we shall see.
@bikinghockeyskier u said for shooting indoor and i will take a 2.8 any day of the week.
@max7164 yes i would take it over the nikon 80-200 at this point.
@eaton1012 surprisingly not bad.
yes, it just crops. the focal length will be the equivalent of about 105-300 on an FX sensor. AF-S and everything will still work fine though.
@chuckj123 my thoughts have been if your going to spend that much for the OS i would look at trying to find a used nikon or canon version 1 instead.
@zidanefang no i did not
I use this lens on a Canon EOS 5D mk ii. I'm quite happy with it, as I enjoy the range and the f2.8 aperture, with its solid build and very good IQ. @kaiyeechiu OS or VR will def help but for the money id stick with the regular one or pick up a used VR1 nikon.
Ed is the man! Long story short, he is how I got into my first show as a photographer! He def helped me out big time!
@punnu5997 I dont look at charts or anything, i use the lens and see if it worked in the real world and the sigma did.
@chackk12 i like to say if ur going to spend the money on the IS u should prob stick with the nikon or canon version.
Very nice review. Been looking at this lens for a while. This review may be what makes me take the plunge and spend the cash on it. Great job Jared!
@bdettvideos if u going to spend the money on the os u should prob go with the nikon vr1 used if u can find it.
@redtippmann i owned it 10 years ago and it was slow focusing than.
Thanks Jared I will send you a detailed message about the problems I'm getting you might be able to help me with that.
Hey Jared,
How come you don't talk about Nikon D5000.
I have been searching for a good review of Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Ty Jared big fan of ur vidoes.
Greetings from Estonia :D
8 1/2 years later, where in Philly can I find that lense?
@osiris1431 no problem if u can please pick it up for my amazon link or give allen's a call.
Thanks.

@ArnanCarmelo if u buy the version for Canon, yes
Thanks for the review,I just got the OS version for my D7000 and I have to say it handled great at a gymnastics meet I went to. Wanted the Nikkor but the extra bucks held me back. Do you think I should have held out and got the Nikkor? Would I have seen the differance,I am happy with the OS version just hope I wont regret not going with the Nikkor. Hi Jared I was thinking to buy the Sigma 70-200mm until I saw the Nikon 80-200mm which lense you think is better. Thanks for your videos. I like the yellow shirt.
how do you make your hair stay this cool for the past so many years...?
@NicholasGervin
I use to own a D5000 and i bought the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens for it and it works great and it can take some very nice photo without a problem, i then ugrade to D7000 using the same lens and the result is even better.
@xmateuL2 70-200 for portraits all the way.
Hi Fro, hope you are doing well and keep it up! What is the best to buy the APO or the HSM II?
Thanks very much and thumbs up from Malta EU
Really diggin this lens, I've been looking for it for a while and going to buy it when I have spare-money for photographing equipment
I got this lens for my D3200 and it work just amazing ! bokeh is good, portraits are outstandingly sharp.!
@xGIBROx nikon prob
Jared, im pretty new to photography and im really interested in sports photography. This lens seams like it would be great but i was also told that it would not be good for me because im just starting out and the cheaper 800$ version doesnt have the OS. what do you have to say?
at 9:25 you shot one at 300mm with a 200mm lens?
Crop factor on a dx is 1.5 so at 200 mm, it's actually 300 mm .
+origin oh... your right.... my bad.
Dear jared , why is that all Sigma lens have macro mentioned on them ? Earlier is saw another video review of a Sigma 17-70mm macro sigma lens ? what exactly are macro lens ? is this Sigma lens that u r testing now similar to the Nikkor 70-22mm lens which is not a macro lens ?/

@Warkeraf It can. Aside from him mentioning the 3100 several times, this lens has it's own motor, so motorless bodies like the 3100 can use this.
@jared would you recommend this lens for a nikon d3200 ??
d3000 is a cropped sensor...and i think 3100 and 3200 have the same sensor
Dominic Doan no no, d3100 and d3200 way better sensor, 1 stop away from d3000 :)
I used to have a d3200, then I bought a d7200 and a 50mm 2.8f lens and then I bought the 70-200mm
@nwarken I wouldn't say cured, but definitely improved. You could probably get solid color images up to 3200 ISO and maybe even 6400 on the D7000.
I would really like this lens, but you can get an 80-200 D for ~$500 used, so I think I'm going to go with that.
HI Jared,
Ok, I know you touched upon the subject in the video, and others have left comments, but why exactly do you think the Sigma is a better buy than the nikon 80-700 afd?
Cheers! :-)
Thank you so much for this review, you answer so many questions I had.
nice review! i just want to ask, this can be also use as a macro lens right? what about the new version with OS??? im not really sure because i saw some reviews of the 70-200 2.8 os and i think it doesn't have macro...thanks!
Hey JaredPolin , I am a beginner in full frame photgraphy, and think you can help me with this. What would you choose as a sharpest lens (price wise of course) like 17-50mm new Sigma or around that focal length for my Canon 1ds ii ? TNX
lo matey watched most of yer clips one way or another just looking into this lens as for me at the moment this price is serious money .... looking through your shots in flickr the IUSO is anywhere from 800+ I use a D300 what do you reckon to the noise from this at 1600+ persoanlly when i shot a friends wedding i almost cried at the high ISO ones as the noise was IMHO horrific but the did not seem to mind once i had played about with them
thank you!! been thinking about this lens for a while now! now i can see what it's like
@AtomicPhotography not at all
@TheShanahg Just ordered mine, had to check out my finance from buying the Canon ef 85mm f/1.8 XD.
I want this lens so much! It's next on the list, just wish I could afford it right now.
What is the difference between Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM Lens -Nikon- (77mm) and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Nikon
HI Jared
I just got this lens a few day ago.
I notics that all your concert pictures is taking some where around 1/125.
How do you keep the lens steady with no IS, i have real problems getting a descent picure below 1/400
Do i need to spend more time in the gym.? :)
or what is your secret.?
@NO0Bstatus The cheaper one doesn't have stabilization, and it's a little bit soft when autofocusing in to 200mm. That shouldn't be a problem. Just zoom in, autofocus, and manually focus a bit more. The expensive one is a better lens, however it's not a completely noticeable difference. Good lens!
But it does not have any form of image stablisation right? Is it an issue at all for this lens?
is this lens made for a DX sensor or a full frame? If I use it with a D200 will I have to apply the 1.5x conversion factor?
Hey @jaredpolin great review, 1 question, How do you set white balance when shooting at a concert with constantly changing lighting?
Dear Jared,
I'm a photography student from the Netherlands, i'm Thinking about buying the 70-200 f2.8 from sigma for my nikon D2x.
But i see that you use a lot off hi ISO, my D2x gifs a lot of Noise when i go beyond iso 300, can it there be something wrong with my camera?? ore is it normal with the D2x???
iv been wanting this lens sometime think iam going to get it before the VAT here in the UK hits the roof in the new year...
just a question.. aren't you putting too much stress on the lens mount when holding your camera without supporting the lens??
you mentioned its good for potraits, sports, concerts but not lanscapes.. just curious, any catch or not ?
that's the review i've been looking for: very comprehensive and informative! thanks a lot, Jared! will get this lens for my canon 7d
on canon or nikon you should use the os version. for sony you can simply buy the non-os. i tried it and the built in stabilizer does its job very well.
If I shot at that low shutter speed on my d3200 all I would get is a blurry mess. I just ordered one of these used and without OS I'm not sure if I can hand hold it at that low shutter speed.
