- A snow leopard cub born at Brookfield Zoo on June 13 made his public debut for zoo guests today. The cub, who now weighs nearly 15 pounds, can be seen on exhibit with his 3-year-old mom, Sarani.
Sarani and her mate, Sabu, 3, arrived at Brookfield Zoo in October 2011 from Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Cape May County Park Zoo in New Jersey, respectively. Their pairing was based on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP). An SSP is a cooperative population management and conservation program for select species in AZA zoos and aquariums. Each SSP manages the breeding of a species to maintain a healthy and self-sustaining population that is both genetically diverse and demographically stable. Including the new cub, 140 snow leopards currently live in 60 institutions in North America. The last time there was the pitter-patter of little snow leopard paws at Brookfield Zoo was in 1992. The zoo has exhibited snow leopards since 1936.
Snow leopards are solitary animals, except for mating and when females are raising cubs. Cubs remain with their mother until they are independent around 18 to 22 months. They reach sexual maturity between 2 to 3 years of age.
The snow leopards' smoky white-grey-yellowish coats, patterned with dark rosettes and spots, provide excellent camouflage in rocky, snowy habitat. Snow leopards have many adaptations which allow them to live in high mountainous terrain, including their very thick and long fur and their large, well furred paws, which act as snowshoes. Although they do not roar, they do moan, growl, mew and hiss, and to their cubs and mates, they make a reassuring puffing sound through their nostrils, which is called "prusten" or "chuffing."
Snow leopards are listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world's oldest and largest global environmental organization. A leading snow leopard conservation organization, The Snow Leopard Trust, estimates population numbers of this elusive cat to be between 3,500 and 7,000 remaining in the wild. They inhabit high, rugged mountainous regions of central Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, China, Mongolia, and Russia. Their numbers are declining due to human influence, such as poaching for medicinal markets and hides, depletion of their prey base, retribution killing following livestock losses, residential and commercial development, and civil unrest.
The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, inspires conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and nature. The Chicago Zoological Society is a private nonprofit organization that operates Brookfield Zoo on land owned by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Open every day of the year, the zoo is located off First Avenue between the Stevenson (I-55) and Eisenhower (I-290) expressways and is also accessible via the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), Metra commuter line, CTA, and PACE bus service. This is the most adorable thing ever! That little cub is having the time of its life jumping, running around, and pouncing on it’s mom. While the mom just seems unfazed, soaking in every moment of it!
It jumps a lot so cute
Like a young owl constantly flapping its wings. It's training for one of the most vital skills an adult animal possesses. Snow leopards are powerful jumpers, and this cub is learning quickly!
I love the way he was trying to jump onto that ledge. Such an adorable ball of fluff!!!

Due to so much leaping the newly snow leopard cub did, takes the saying "Leaping Leopard" to a young and joyous level!

nah in they were the wil theyd be hunted down for coat for sure probly more than lions other in a zoo they are prected such poachers
It does but at least they're loved and protected
Well most snow leopards in zoos today are born in captivity. And they are soon more than there are in the wild. Of course a bigger area and stuff would be nice, but i think they have a pretty happy life in many zoos, better than being exstinct
What a beauty. Cutie
Gorgeous, the easygoing game of the little snow leopard!

Thank you SO much..what a wonderful couple of minutes...this one is a little rascal I can tell...the way the animals express themselves in your videos..just says everything about how well you care for them and love them, bless you Brookfield Zoo..of course we would all love to see these creatures in their natural habitat..but what you are doing preserves the species and adds public awareness for preservation of not only they as a species, but their natural environment..thank you so much ..

he's soooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to visit the zoo again just to see him!!!! Can we name him Spartakus!!!!!
Absolutely BEAU-TI-FUL!!
These animals are for the wild...their territories are so vast that its a pity to see them confined in such small place

how did it go
2013. The Brookfield Zoo is proud to share the birth of a male Snow Leopard cub, born on June 13. The cub was born to first time mom Sarani and her mate, Sabu. At just over two months, the cub weighs about 10 pounds
It looks like mommy but smol
Awesome video thank u
Snow leopards are my faculty animal :)
Faculty? Is that anything like a spirit animal?
😻😻😻😻😻😻😽
О КАК КРАСИВО 👏👍 ВОТ ЧТО ПРИРОДА ДАЁТ 👏
ITS FLUFFY
I'm conflicted, the cub looks happy but the mother looks likes she's been driven insane by confinement and is desperately searching for a way to escape. I pray these majestic angels get the attention and love they deserve.
Actually, that's not what's happening here! When we have cubs, the male snow leopard is let out at night, and then each morning the female spends the first hour or so making sure that the habitat is safe. We tend to take video of cubs in those early hours before the crowds show up. We have lots of other videos where the snow leopards are engaging with enrichment or napping.
Cute
Чудо❤️
nice video. Thanks.
00:51 :slaps face: don't look at me like DAT ):(

That cub is so active. The cubs mother must be tired. She will need a babysitter soon.
How anyone could shoot them is beyond me, They are incredible animals and just want to survive like us Humans.Hopefully they have a cool place to go to,they have fur for extreme cold weather.Beautiful All around 💞
cub has zoomies
They found in india all over himalayas
More of this purrr-lease. Show us how guys feed the cub.
OMG, it’s Tigger, bouncing all over the place.
Mom doesn't want to play
A cub with springs on his paws - boing boing! The 'cub' will now be 7 (watching this in 2020) - not so much of a cub now!
I saw them yesterday for the first time at Brookfield zoo. They are kept in small space. Most of us have backyards bigger than that. I don't claim to be an expert of this domain but can someone please explain to me how this is suitable for the animal? Monkeys area was at least 5 times the size of snow leopard's space.
Lucu benar anak citah pingin gendong nya
Baby tailung
amazing! congrats :) not a fan of the soundtrack but I just muted it.
Мам ну давай поиграем!!!
i just enjoy the video, they looks to be at good place and funny music also. what's the music name ?
The music is "Radio Martini" by Kevin MacLeod. His website is www.incompetech.com.
Seems like they aren't comfortable with that place. We can see the cub is jumping on the rocks and looking for cliffs around because they are meant for that.
This was actually the cub's first time out, so it was exploring its new surroundings.
From where?
India
Nepal or
Russia
