- Created for a celebration of Rufus's life at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music on Dec. 15, 2011, the 10th anniversary of his passing. Rufus was an inspiring friend for over 30 years, and this is a labor of love and tribute, not a commercial endeavor. There's no intent to infringe on the rights involved in the music, photos and video it contains.

Rufus Thomas, when I was growing up in Arkansas every morning before School was spent listening to the Radio to hear Rufus sing Walking The Dog, I moved to Memphis Tennessee in 1970 and would see him now and then, my neighbor was a good friend of his, things was different back then. R I P, always remembered never forgotten.

Anthony Brown, you don't know what you're talking about. Rufus performed for an almost exclusively black audience until "Walking the Dog" became a hit in 1963.
The irony of Anthony's statement is he probably loves rap and the culture that goes with it, which itself is basically about being a minstrel (clown) for white folks. He's just too dumb to realize it, or just doesn't care -- or both.

Was vaguely aware of his name for penning his classic song 'walking the dog', as many artists covered it since it's release in the early 60's. (Rolling Stones and Aerosmith etc.) But until I read the book 'Respect Yourself': The History of Stax records recently, did I understand this man and his history in Memphis growing up, and of course the Stax Records history, of which he and his daughter were an integral part of. It's interesting that here at the end of this video, Rufus, states that he left this world hating no one, while in the book, he related the Jim Crow south practices, that justifiably left he and most blacks in the south, hateful and resentful of the white race. But with the Stax record company being founded by a white amateur country fiddle player (Jim Stewart), and financed initially by his older sister (Denise Axton), and reaching out to the local black artists and musicians, and becoming an exclusive producer of black soul music, Rufus in the book said, early on with his experiences with the Jim Stweart and Denise Axton, and the various white studio musicians (Cropper, Dunn Nix etc.), that he was able to befriend and trust white people. A true American funk/soul pioneer. RIP

Elvis' ain't nothing but a hound dog sounds like a complete rip-off to Rufus' bear cat song.
Actually, "Hound Dog" was originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton and was a big R&B hit in 1953. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were 19 when they wrote it. "Bear Cat" was actually a rip on Big Mama's version and Sam Phillips got sued for it. Elvis covered it in 1956. Last I heard, "Hound Dog" has been covered over 250 times.
