- This is my review of the following antenna: “ANTOP AT-500SBS HD Smart Bar: HDTV & FM Amplified Antenna with Smart Boost System, 80 mile range” which runs about $120 on the Antop website and claims 80 mile range. I test out the antenna on several VHF and UHF TV stations that I can pick up in my area. I also provide information on why it’s important to understand the difference between VHF and UHF TV frequencies.

Is there any assembly with this one? I bought the Clearstream 2 and the plastic tabs on both sides broke a half a second into assembly and it worked okay as long as I keep using fresh duct tape but the duct tape falls off and it is a pain in the neck and I don't want to buy another of that brand. Hoping this one might be easier to assemble.

@@alex.7631 Thanks. I tried2 of the Clearview types and couldn't assemble either of them. The first one the plastic tabs broke on both sides. I bought a different style where the UFH bar is supposed to screw on but not one of the screws in the package fit into the available holes, not even close. So I did end up getting this one and you are right. No assembly is required. I lost a few of the UFH channels but all of the rest came in.
Can you use an alternate vhf pre amp with this antenna ???

I just hooked up my new ANTOP AT-500SBS HD Smart Bar. It works great. I used to have issues with UHF, VHF positioning of one always being weak. Now they are equally good. Glad I got this antenna, but I wouldn't have if I didn't watch your video first. Thanks for the information.
That's a pretty good TV antenna for being an indoor model. BTW, your indoor antenna review videos are great. Especially for those of us who don't want to waste time or money on crappy antennas. Keep these videos going!

Thank you Antenna Man, I have this Antop Bar Antenna and it those very well were I live Phoenix Arizona. By putting in different spots in my room and re-tunning in flat position the tv I was able to get 98 channels total. It cost more than those square flat antennas,but is worth it.

@@AntennaMan Does that antenna work for VHF-low 2-6? The PBS in my market, WBRA 15, transmits on channel 3.

I have a older large vhf only ant. And would like to make more compact in size because I only need to pick up channels 9 & 11 with it. Can I cut off a % of each element to pick up those two channels?
@@larryosterkamp8252 Why don't you connect it directly to your set-top-box, and see if it works without cutting the elements? I have a large VHF 3 element Yagi antenna designed for FM radio, and had an matching transformer for 75 ohm cable built in. This is the model: www.dipolnet.com/fm_antenna_dipol_3-rz_b_88-108_mhz__A0312.htm And I connected to my TV set This was back in analog days. I could get channels 7, 9, 10 and 11 perfectly. In my area we didn't had channels on VHF low only on VHF High and UHF. As for UHF I had to buy another antenna. On digital everything is only on UHF in my country. Also my neighbors had large VHF antennas like that model and everything on VHF high was crystal clear. And FM reception was great and in stereo
@@Nicholas_Chris my large vhf ant works well on my 2 channels in my area. I have it coupled with long Yagi UHF. I still want to cut it down so it isn't such a eye sore on my roof because its so wide.l would like to know any formula for tuning it for ch 9&11. Thanks
@@larryosterkamp8252 You're welcome. Personally I would recommend you to buy a new antenna for VHF High. And keep the old VHF antenna the way it is. Maybe in the future you would need the old antenna either for VHF low band TV or for improving the FM reception. For example I'm using my old VHF antenna for FM reception. I receive 25 radio stations in stereo. And is summed with my UHF antenna.

Based on following you for several months now, and your positive review of this antenna I purchased it. It works well feeding 4 TVs in my house. What is surprising is that the reception is best facing West/Northwest and all the TV transmission towers are all South/Southwest of my house. There is loss of some weaker stations at the end of the cable run. The antenna is just laying on a 2nd story windowsill, and is out of sight from the ground level.
Wait this works better than the 150? How?!?
Kidding aside, great video. Simple explanations for vhf/uhf/virtual channel #, tradeoffs for interior/exterior. Keep it up.

This antenna should be mounted in the attic, so you can get a better reception on both TV and FM radio.
I purchased this antenna based on this review and others. I installed the antenna about 7 feet high in the back of my home with only one wall between it and the outside. The antenna faces nearly due south at 182° and an elevation of 140m AMSL. All of the broadcast antennas are located between 175° and 217° and at a distance not exceeding 13 miles. Most of the antennas are at significant elevation, i.e. a tower at 206° and 11 miles hosts three of the antennas at 716m (RF 30), 690m (RF 14), and 677m (RF 36). My TV scans and finds all of those signals, but when tuning to the station at RF 14, I get the message "Program Not Available." The same happens with an antenna at 9.8 miles, 217°, and 581m, broadcasting on RF 12. All other stations come in great.
The common denominator for the "Program not Available" message is low broadcast frequency, RF12 and 14. At this point, I must note that the cable connecting the antenna to the TV is longer than that sent with the antenna since I am using cable installed at construction to route the signal to the TV. After reporting this information to Antop, they sent me a new amplifier, but nothing changed. At this point, I don't know if I have an antenna problem or a cabling/amplifier problem.
I'm pleased that I get good reception on higher bands, but frustrated that the NBC and Fox stations don't have a picture.
The antenna is the problem. You might need to try it in a new location or go for an attic/outdoor antenna setup.

Have you noticed if this Smart Bar antenna works best horizontally up in the attic? We get a lot of semi trucks on our road that interfere constantly. Thank you!
Very helpful review. This model makes a lot more sense for me than the Clearstream 2V Max I'm currently using indoors.
I like that you post comparative signal strength. At some point, I would love to see a chart comparing the performance of all of the indoor antennas you review. You are doing folks a great service with these tests!
Unfortunately I won't be making a chart like that. My UA-cam channel is supported by views and if I made a chart like that people wouldn't watch my videos.
I got antop 400bv and love it. Just wish I could find someone to mount it higher to max out the channels it can get

Look up a satellite tech or roofer in your area they can probably do it.
Like Tyler mentioned, call a satellite installer or security installer. A guy that does camera security did mine.

Doing so with a good antenna gains far better use ( typically put up as high as you reasonably go .. just do so Safely )
Go to the Facebook marketplace there are plenty of guys offering that type of service for around $70-80 dollars

It does have slots on the back to mount on a wall with pushpins or screws.
I have one of these antennas on order. Which side of the bar should be aimed toward the TV station transmitter towers? Is mounting the bar in vertical or horizontal orientation better for UHF and VHF rf? Thanks. i enjoy your videos.

Another great review Tyler. I almost went with it's big brother the Antop Flat Panel outdoor antenna due to the good reviews I have read on it. I'm 50 to 60 miles away from the stations I was most interested in getting and went with the Clearstream 4max and added the Clearstream 5 due to 2 of the 4 were VHF and the 5 did a better job picking up VHF.
I never tried that clear stream 5
I heard from many it does very well indeed

In the case of Gray Television's WWSB "ABC 7," located in Sarasota, Florida, a broadcast submarket of the Tampa Bay broadcast market, the station identifies by cable channel 7 in their branding (due to high cable TV penetration in the area), while their virtual channel is 40 and RF channel is 24.
Scripps Broadcasting-owned Tampa Bay-based ABC Affiliate WFTS-TV 28, branded simply as "ABC Action News," broadcasts on virtual channel 28 and RF channel 17 and is the Tampa Bay Area's main ABC affiliate.

I have an old Phillips bar antenna wall mounted over one of my tvs. It's just average reception. Everybody points at it and asks "What's that?"

The RCA Yagi (which has stellar reviews across the board online) I set up on my roof here in Warwick, RI picks up 8 channels no matter what direction I point it in. By contrast, the Mohu Leaf I got my mother for Christmas a few years back picks up over triple that. Just one room over from that Mohu Leaf is a Clearstream 4Max which picks up about 18, still not as much as the dinky little Mohu Leaf. This antenna business is all very odd.
Keep in mind, among a ton of other factors that can come into play? Different brands of TV's have better or worse built-in tuners than others. And that can make a huge difference.
The tv you have hooked up to the leaf may very well have a better tuner than the one hooked up to the clearsteam.
Switching the TV's would eliminate one of the *potential* problems, but by no means would be a sure fix.

I will at some point. His antennas are decent UHF antennas but lack VHF elements for channels 2-13. Pretty sure many other antennas will outperform it.

@@AntennaMan I'm getting 4 VHF channels with his antenna and only 1 with my clearstream 4v. I was surprised as Danny's is pretty much a simple 4bay type. The only thing he uses that is different from other 4bay/8bays is that he uses a thicker gauge solid copper wire for his whiskers and they are 10inches long instead of 8in. He does make a VHF attachment to add to his antennas. I've tried channel masters, wineguards, clearstream and I can tell you that Danny's antenna beats them all. I'm 2edge for all channels. Antenna Web says I should get 0 channels. I'm getting 21.
Would a uhf channel 70 miles away look good and be picked up?
Great review, I've been looking for a replacement indoor antenna for my older model Clearstream 2Max, the one without the VHF element that has the screen (no VHF channels in my area). I do like the Clearstream as it gets more channels from inside my house than any other antenna I've tried but it's huge, kind of an eye sore and would be nice to have an antenna that doesn't stand out so much.
Just wish the FTC would start doing their job and stop companies from making bogus range claims with antennas.
I have the Clearstream 2V max, and also am thinking this Antop antenna would do as well and wouldn't be as intrusive. Both are good, but looks matter if you are stuck with an indoor antenna.

Could you please do one episode on FM & Am antennas?
Broadcast AM requires either a long wire, or a tuned coil.
Broadcast FM is just below RF 6 so any low band VHF will work fine. Or a multi element beam (yagi) is the best.
I got a similar one and like it pretty well, still my family is like, “Oh, I can’t LIVE without MTV, Oh, I can’t LIVE without Big Ten”, but Sling may work if we try an attic or outdoor antenna next time I’m browsing for a decent one
It would be cool if the person who wanted to put an antenna on the roof reported _her husband_ didn't want to do that, maybe being fearful he'd have to climb up there when she was prepared to do it herself... Hey, throw some surprises in every now and then, Tyler! 😊 I put up an outdoor antenna. It wasn't easy and I had to get inventive, but I wanted a signal from a Santa Fe 60 miles away (no cable available at the time, 1980s). I'd have to twist it to aim at Santa Fe, then twist it again to aim to the northeast to get channels atop a local mountain. These days I have DVDs of all the shows, or can get them via the Internet, and nothing much is on OTA tv.
I live in what we locals call the fish bowl AKA San Juan Capistrano CA it's between Laguna Niguel CA & Dana Point CA, The the towers aren't that far from me in actuality, it's just getting past the top of the fish bowl Any help or recommendations would be appreciated, right now we're stuck with cable & they know it. I usually watch as much streaming as possible but it's too complicated for my 85yr old mother. Thanks again you've been a big help so far.

I have a 12-15 foot high, pre amplified CM3020, with Edge 2 channels. It’s really poor. I know the fix. Higher elevation. But can’t do it.

Does removing the lnb of an old satellite dish and installing a tv antenna in its place intensify a uhf tv signal?
Not sure. I would just remove the whole satellite dish and put an antenna in its place instead of doing it the hard way.

No there isn't unless you pair up with your neighbors wifi or hotspot your phone.

Any chance that you were able to reel in 6ABC out of Philly with this one?? That is the one OTA channel (along with WFMZ up your way) that I can't get (and want) and I'm only 20-25 miles as the crow flies from both transmitters.

I just installed a version of this antenna in my attic (AT-420B). I ran the cable to an amplified splitter then to 4 rooms via cable inside the walls. I live halfway between Tampa and Orlando. With this setup, I get about 55 stations from both areas but it is pointing towards Orlando. It is mounted vertical however. Does it make a difference which way it is facing? And can I add another antenna and combine them into one? Thank you for your videos! They really help in getting rid of ridiculously high cable rates!

That's what I am thinking. It performed very well from my tests but I think a lot of people will leave a bad review for an antenna that does not automatically get them more channels. You truly can't go based off reviews anymore because people are idiots.

Is the cable on the antenna user changeable/upgradeable? From the pictures it looks built-in and for 120 bucks that would be an instant deal killer for me.

That antenna would never work at my location. I use an outdoor CM4228, one of the best UHF antennas around. I get 40 rock solid UHF stations, most from the U.S. at 90 miles out, mind you they cross Lake Ontario into Canada, so i'm likely getting more distance because of the lake. My antenna is 25' high off the ground.
Bought the antenna from woot for $35. Plugged in and found 10 other channels at 50% gain power.

I have some old multiway coax splitters laying around and I was wondering if I could attach two different style antennas on the "input" ports and then attach the "output" port to my tv's "external antenna" coax port? Would this even utilize the effect of both antennas, or would it just favor one over the other?
You will likely mess things up due to multipath interference. I have a video on this topic if you check out my other videos.

I'm sure the high mileage estimates, if legit at all, are cases of high rise apartments with windows in line of sight of xmitters or mountaintop homes.
I'm on the shadow side of a high ridge 70 miles above Atlanta, near Tenn/NC. I get nothing from ATL. People a mile straight south of me on the other side get several ATL channels with indoor traditional antennas.

Don't mess with your internet leave it the way your cable company set it up. You cannot run an antenna and internet on the same line you will mess things up.
Assuming it's a powered antenna, but can it be used without power ? Is there big db difference in signal strength? This looks like an interesting product as the website shows it can hook up 2 devices
The amplifier did make a small difference in my test.

Hey Tyler. Is it possible that things have changed over the years? When I lived in NY, channels 2 (WCBS), 4 (WNBC), 5 (WNEW), 7 (WABC), 9 (WWOR), 11(WPIX) & 13(WNET) were definitely all VHF.
Yes a lot has changed over the years. Most of the New York stations are on UHF now. WABC, WPIX, and WNET are still on VHF. TV stations are able to broadcast on a different Channel than what shows up on a tuner using a virtual channel
That was the case in the NTSC (old-school analog) broadcasting days. Once ATSC 1.0 (digital HDTV) hit in the late 1990s, these channel numbers turned into "virtual numbers" used for marketing and for users to punch into their remote control, and the actual broadcast frequency channel number changed to a "hidden, mostly behind the scenes" type of parameter.

This antenna is still available and looks like it possibly will work indoors where I need to put it - on top of my kitchen cabinets. Unfortunately, the tv is in the middle of the house and not right next to windows but we are only a few miles from all of our local stations so maybe it will pick up. But I notice that it has a 4G filter but not a 5G filter. I’m exactly three blocks from a cell tower so now I’m worried about that. Any advice?

Because it's a completely different channel on a different frequency and output power. You may need a better antenna

I have question I hope you can answer.
My aunt and uncle live near Alexandria MN & they noticed they no longer get NBC, ABC, Fox & other stations after doing several channel scans.
I called the Walmart electronics dept & they mentioned that locally they no longer offer over the air to these stations & you pretty much have to pay for it through a cable or satellite service.

Did you use the amplifier or not. I had one from radio shack like that twenty years ago you had to move it around to get the channels you wanted but it had no amplifier.
I tried both with and without the amplifier. It worked a bit better with the amplifier

Would this antenna be overkill for Phoenix Az...towers are 12 miles away from me and no low VHF and 3 high VHF.
There's no such thing as overkill with an antenna. Getting a better one than what you need just means less signal interruptions during bad weather.
At fifty miles north of New York City, how is this antenna at pulling in FM ?

I would go with the two Macs still because if you end up in the situation where you can't get good reception indoors you can easily converted to an outdoor antenna unlike the antop model.

I have the at-400v, which is basically the sbs800 without the preamp.
My problem with the antop preampnis their noise and ripple is a bit high. I uses the 400v along qith a KitzTech 500 preamp. Zero pixelation and over 50 channels in the deteoit area. I even get 5 Canadian channnels and Toledo OH
an antenna is only good for the frequency its tuned for.. what might work great for him in his area.. wont work great for you in yours! remember that!! 40+ years experience here.. BUT HE DOES GIVE SOME GOOD REVIEWS

home I have a booster flat antenna Black on one side ,white on the other side purchase at Home Depot
They are digital but the signals have to broadcast on a certain band which is VHF and UHF. In other words the type of antenna you need from the analog vs digital age didn't change but a lot of chinese companies that don't know anything made UHF only antennas thinking all TV stations are on that band when there are many still on the VHF band.
My experience with this antenna was not very good. It did not receive as well as an old standard "rabbit ears" with UHF loop. It was mounted at the room ceiling level in the bedroom. I opened the antenna part and it had two elements which were just a foil that was an open loop on each side. It did not appear to be big enough to pick up VHF channels, two of which I am trying to get reliably. I returned the antenna to the vendor.
My set in the living room is connected to an FM radio antenna that is mounted in the attic. It receives VHF stations to the south that are 26 miles away, but is intermittent. It receives best when there is a cloud cover and humid conditions. This is in South Florida which is very flat and there is a ridge about 40 feet above sea level 4 miles to the south. My place is at about 18 feet above sea level. I plan on getting an "outdoor" antenna made for VHF/UHF TV and installing it in the attic in place of the FM antenna, but I will wait until "winter" to install because of the heat in the attic.
What's the difference between this antenna and the ANTOP AT-215BB. Other than slightly longer range, the size and specs look similar. Is this one worth 50% more money?
