  • In this video I review the Antennas Direct ClearStream 1Max Indoor/Outdoor TV antenna. It runs between $60-$80 online and claims to pick up digital HD TV signals within 40 miles of the broadcast tower. How well does this indoor antenna work and where would I recommend it?

I live just south of Montreal and bought this exact antenna a little over a year ago. I mounted it outside facing south where the VHF bars are just over the roof line of my flat roofed house. I get about 27 stations between the Canadian (French and English) and US stations in Plattsburg NY, Burlington VT and even a New Hampshire PBS station. I get a movie station, MeTV, Bounce and a few others. The only thing is I need to hoist it on a pole higher as sometimes the snow piles up from a snowstorm and it gets slightly covered causing one or two Canadian stations to pixelate occasionally. That's next spring as I'm not climbing up a ladder in January. Ha. Thanks Tyler. Keep up the good work and info.

Ok, so I found your channel and yes, I bought one of those “Digital HD” flat antennas. After watching this vid, I bought the 1Max because I have good line of sight and the main tower is about 25mi away. 124 channels! Yes, 124. I am very pleased with my purchase. There were some duplicates and lots of foreign language channels but all in all I’m happy. Area: Hayward CA.

Thanks for this review! This antenna works perfectly from my location in downtown Toronto. I'm able to receive all the strong Canadian channels from the CN tower only a few km away and all Buffalo stations from across the lake. I paired it with a Tablo and couldn't be happier.

Replacing my 1byOne outdoor flat panel antenna with one of these really brought in the signals! The addition of the VHF elements really helped with the lower channels in my area (Denver, CO). Thanks for the advice!

Impressive. You clearly have a genuine understanding of what makes an antenna work. Although I was trained as a mechanical engineer, I did have an electrical engineer major sharing my dorm room for 4 years so I have that going for me. In a more serious vein, I had the privilege to work with probably the most advanced antenna people on Earth when I was a technical operations officer with CIA. Most of the antennas coming out of their labs were designed to be worn concealed on the human body or concealed hidden in various (small) things that a foreign national spy could own without suspicion. As you can no doubt imagine these are EXTREMELY challenging requirements (the human body is a bucket of water that absorbs RF like a sponge) but the antenna gurus at CIA pulled it off using unicorn urine, pixie dust and human brain power that would make Einstein very jealous. Thank you for what you do, there is a LOT of junk out there.

My thanks to Tyler the Antenna Man... based upon his recommendation... I bought a ClearStream 1Max antenna using the link you provided for indoor use... I never could get any of the VHF channels using one of those 'peel and stick" cheap window antenna. The UHF channels that I get, would come in as pixelated or frozen.... Installing the ClearStream 1Max fixed all of that... I'm now getting all of the channels and stations listed on the Antenna Web site... thanks for the expert advice... Excellent review , excellent podcast... well done...👍😎👍

Just ordered this antenna to give it a try. I'm currently using an ANTAN amplified indoor antenna from Amazon. Yes, it's a crappy flat antenna but it pulls in all the (27) stations in my area (all within 5 to 17 miles ranging northeast to southeast). I recently added an antennatv2 though, and am losing consistency on a couple stations. I'm hoping this does the trick either indoors or outdoors.

Based upon your recommendations and others on UA-cam, I purchased two of the ClearStream 1MAX UHF VHF Indoor Outdoor HDTV Antennas on September 8, 2022 for my mom's house.
My mom's house is within 20 miles of the broadcast transmitters of the big four networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox) with the farthest broadcast transmitter being 40 miles away (although, that station is a TBN owned station, and I don't believe she watches it, anyway).
Most of the local channels in my area are on the UHF band, but the local NBC, ABC, and PBS affiliates are on the Hi-VHF band.
Although I had to elevate the antenna a bit and play around with the location, I found a spot on the wall where I was able to pick up all of the local channels I was trying to obtain using the ClearStream 1MAX UHF VHF Indoor Outdoor HDTV Antenna in the living room. Due to time constraints, I didn't get the second antenna installed in my mom's bedroom. However, she mentioned that it wasn't too big of a concern if she wasn't able to pick up as many stations in there compared to the living room.
Overall, I'm very pleased with your recommendation.

From your remarks on the indoor antenna, I assume that, if you’re borderline, go for an outside antenna.
An interesting point: I looked at the DTV Reception page, entered my address, and got all moderate or weak stations. It’s not mentioned but I tried “my location” and nothing happened. I typed in my coordinates in the format 33-39.5N xx-x.x W, it worked, and changed to all strong. I’m about 40 miles west of Atlanta.

My current outdoor antenna got whacked in the Iowa Derecho "inland hurricane" this summer (100+ mph winds for about 40 minutes). So many people are having roofs replaced, mine won't be done until Spring sometime. So ... not doing a new outdoor antenna until after that.
What to do in the meantime?
Based on Tyler's review of the Clearstream 2Max I decided to see if I could limp along 'til Spring with it mounted indoors.
    Well ...
Dang if that 2Max isn't nearly perfect indoors (95+% of the time) in the top of a closet! Getting ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and FOX; 3 on VHF-Hi (16, 34 & 34 mi) and 2 on UHF (20 & 39 mi) . I'm in heavy woods too.
Although, since the Derecho, it's not as heavy as it used to be (many large trees just snapped off half way up).
It's even possible I'll just live with the 2Max forever. I might mount it outdoors in the Spring. Thanks, Tyler for all the great info and reviews!

Based on your past videos, the ClearStream 1Max is equal to the larger ClearStream Max-V (and even better for weak channel W27EC). The ClearStream 1Max also did much better for some channels (WYOU and WBRE) compared to the larger 2Max and 4Max models. Is ClearStream 1Max really better, or was it different atmospheric conditions. It would be great to see a shootout comparing these models on the same day, including indoor usage. Also, it would be interesting to see if the optional reflector improves these antennas. Thanks!

This is the antenna i have and it does not do as well as I hoped. It loses channels at various times and then regains them at other times. It also won't pull in my fav stations. Even with help from the direction and distance station maps doesn't help. 1Max is so far not meeting my simple needs as the channels are all within its range and even gets some signals I didn't think it could get. I am in an apartment 10 feet off the ground and the antenna is about 14 feet above the ground because of mounting. I use a small signal amp or it would not get some of the stations at all even though it If i can get 2 antennas together I might be able to get all the channels I should be able to receive. Still it gets a good signal when it works and the tv has a great picture.

I know you dislike when antenna companies use HD or 4K but if you look at Antennas Direct they simply say HD ready or 4K ready. I think its fair marketing for antenna companies to advertise simplicity. You, your followers, and tech savvy customers know the difference. The average customer just wants to know that the respective antenna can get these "new signals".

Hello, I learned so much from this video, thank you! I have 4 TVs in my 2 story home. If I placed this antenna on the 2nd floor of my home, would all of the TVs pick up same channels? Or, would I need to buy a separate antenna for each TV? Sorry, I'm fairly new to all of this but really want to cut down on the cost of my cable bill. You may have already fixed the problem but just in case someone else has a similiar issue:
Based on other comments I've read I wonder if it could be some form of interference. The easiest one to fix might be interference from LED lights that are near the living room TV. One suggestion would be to replace those LED lights (if you have some) with an incandescent bulb and see if that fixes the interference with ABC.

I’m never sure with non-arrow shaped indoor antennae like this one how to aim. For the VHS dipole, should the rod be aimed like a shotgun at the tower? What about the opposing pole? Should it be aimed in the opposite direction? In other words, should the poles simply be perpendicular to the tower? As far as the circular UHS, circle which is essentially flat, should the plane of the flat side be perpendicular to the tower?

I'm done with stupid cheap indoor antennas, now I'm thinking of purchasing this product for as an outdoor antenna. One question I have in mind, am I able to attach a reflecteor at the back? Or maybe if some how will it be able to pick up signals without the reflector? I live in apartments downstairs, in front of trees and other buildings. I live about 18 miles from the broadcast towers, main signals from SSW. My cheap RCA antenna worked, but not all good. I need the combination of UHF & VHF antenna. I mostly watch an ABC channel that is in the VHF spectrum, and I need a better reception to pick it up.

I've recently converted the back of my truck into a simple camping set up, and I'm looking to install a tv in it. I've came close to buying one of those cheap indoor "hdtv" antennas not because of the hd part but because its small and easy to tuck away. After finding out they're junk after watching a few of your videos I've been wondering if there's a tv antenna that's like a traditional cb antenna, just a straight antenna. I already have a cb antenna on my truck and since my truck already looks like a cop truck, it wouldn't hurt to ad another antenna lol. I've looked online for VHF and UHF Antennas and can find a bunch whip style magnet antennas however the male end connector at the end of thw wire is for a cb. If I get an adaptor for a tv will I be able to make it work as a tv antenna?

    • @wallacegrommet9343
      @wallacegrommet9343 3 роки тому

Won’t work unless you’re right on top of the transmitter. Tv and radio transmit their signal in different wave orientations, which is why you never see a vertical whip used to receive TV. Also, the range of frequencies is way different, like in not good at all. There are some small flying saucer style tv antennas that are designed for boats. 12 volt usually, for the built in amplifier, and about ten to fourteen inches across. Around a hundred bucks give or take. Glomex and Shakespeare are two of the better brands. Amazon sells a whole bunch of cheaper look alike antennas, but buyer beware.

In case anyone is checking this message out one possibility would be the ClearStream Eclipse. The FCC requires all stations to maintain their ATSC 1.0 signals for at least 5 years after ATSC 3.0 launches, though some subchannels are likely to be shuffled around different RF channels to accommodate the ATSC 3.0 signals. I agree that Silicon Dust's HDHomeRun 4K is the best option if you don't have one of the few TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners, though you may have a hard time with the new codecs (especially Dolby AC-4 audio).

Cheap Onn $9 antenna pulled in 70 stations. This one pulled in 52. To put that in perspective that is only 2 more than a homemade, cloths hanger one I made, and only 4 more than a paperclip stuck in the antenna receiver on the tv. • @richellebrittain2127

It's an extra UHF element. Indoor loops are generally for UHF; the straight element across the top of both is for VHF, mainly VHF-Hi (RF 7-13) where most of the remaining VHF stations are found. VHF-Lo (RF 2-6) often requires even longer straight elements, like fully-extended rabbit ears (usually almost straight up); it's seen in very few markets (the only one anywhere near me is the NBC affiliate in Memphis, still on its analog-era RF 5).
