Fantastic sculpture. Fusing and slumping for the contour and colors brings this piece to a new level. Someone must be proud to have this in their garden.
That was a FASCINATING journey start to finish. I could go on n on but short is, sweet so let me just say that the iridescence is hypnotizing 😍😍😍 I just discovered your hidden genius and shall be a follower forever 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I had the same flaking issue using Van Gogh glass when it came to grinding. I saw another comment that recommended spraying the back with a clear poly spray prior to grinding. As long as I use a very fine bit and don’t take too much off, it works fine.
I’ve just decided to finally try my hand at mosaics so I’ve been doing a deep dive on UA-cam to get as much information as I could, I am so impressed with your work and wish it was more widely seen because it’s really stunning… I don’t know if you check comments but I was wondering how long a piece of that magnitude took you to complete?…. I have not even attached my first piece of glass to a substrate but I’ve spent the last week chipping away at Tessara to have as many options as I can. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos I have really enjoyed them
Thanks for the comment. This piece was a slow process as all the tesserae were cut from smalti that i produced in the kiln. That allowed me to have exactly the tone and density for each piece. The kiln time alone involved firings over a two month period. Quite pedantic, but i wanted exact color choices. In your own work, I hope you enjoy the process as well as the finished art
Did you use the 77 spray to apply the self adhesive vinyl wrap? I purchased the wrap but the sticky side has little "stick" to it? Is the reason for this step (vinyl sticky wrap) to add durability? Where do you get the white sticky paper? Would like to see the anchoring step of the structure holding it. Do you offer tutorials? What type of glass do you use? How did you come up with the top- down view cartoon looking down on the coosa? This was a Great Video even if I have lots of questions! That's just me lol! Thank you
Hello Tosha, Thank you for your comments and questions. I used the 77 spray because the adhesive on the vinyl wrap was not sticky enough to adhere to the contoured surfaces, its made for patching flat repairs to plaster walls. The vinyl wrap adds structural durability by giving the exterior thin set a matrix upon which to build successive layers that are reinforced. The white sticky paper is essentially shelf paper. The anchoring is added with epoxy while building the block of Styrofoam before sculpting the form. I haven't taught classes since covid, but I mentor and consult with other artists on their projects. The glass that I used on this piece was essentially smalty blanks that were fused from compatible bullseye glass and spectrum glass. Hope this was helpful and would enjoy seeing some of your work.
I'm working on an Easter cross and Bunny. Last night I tried to adhere the vinyl tape to the foam and this one didn't want to stick at all 😟. I used Marshalltown joint tape. Can you please share which one you use? 🙏...So beautiful your artwork. 😍❤️.. Awesome video ...thanks for sharing
Sangue, Thanks for the positive comment. I use a vinyl product called Fibatape. At times when there is a sharp contour its necessary to add some adhesive to get good results. I use a 3M product -Super 77 multipurpose adhesive. I hold a piece of tape in the air, and spray a light coat, then wait a minute before applying. Hope this is helpful
Thank you so so so much for the reply and your help 🙏😊...I did used the spray adhesive but it kept pulling up. I had to end up sewing 🧵🪡 it on the back 😅🙈. It's a good thing it's a small project. Now I know what to look for on my next project. Again thank you so much 🙏 I truly appreciate it. 🙋♀️
Amazing teacher .... Just found you tonight, so gonna love watching more! I love this fish. I am a glass artist, that hasn't yet jumped into mosaics. Wanting to learn as much as possible, as I do each medium before jumping in. Quick question , you said before you applied the mesh, you took out the center to add the support. Do you mean the "legs" that are visible or did you add wood, something sturdier ,with a little more weight? I look forward to watching the rest of this video. Thank you for sharing!
as a glass artist, you have an intrinsic understanding of this medium and can hit the ground running. The support was the "legs". Two layers of mesh and thinset give a sturdy substrate. When adding the tesserae with more thinset, the three layers are quite strong. The foam core keeps the weight manageable. In person, classes are so much easier, and perhaps after the viruses have abated I can get back to that format. For now, i will make more videos. Thanks for your interest

It now resides in the Robert Kent Gallery in Marietta GA seeking a forever home.
Excellent explanation of process. Many Thanks!
Extraordinarily beautiful!
Thanks. Art is good

Thank you.
feel like slumping the glass is the real challenge to producing this work. ill give it a shot one day after more researching. :)
you are a VERY talented man and very patient!
And you as well for viewing this long video! Thank you.
What a stunning piece!
thank you, I am starting to work on a dragon now. Just finished making the eyes at the glass-blowing furnace.
Thank you so much for letting us view the way you accomplished such a beautiful piece of art. I love your fish!

This is such a beautiful mosaic, and your video was great to watch. Thank you :)
Will be working on a dragon soon. I just finished making the eyes at the glass blowing furnace
Hermoso trabajo. Saludos desde Argentina

Shouldn't you avoid cutting the foam outside so that all the little tiny foa crumbs and flakes don't end up in the ocean??
