I bought one a few months ago and have yet to use mine. I need to push myself to get it setup and going. We might have a bad winter coming up and we could really use this. I live in Virginia by the way...

When they arrived today I then went to Dollar General and bought a cheap styrofoam ice chest which had some angles to it which would capture more sunlight. And I also bought a couple of cheap photograph frames with glass. I then went home and used a razor knife to cut off one side of the styrofoam ice chest. Just purchased this All American Sun Oven a week ago and I made your recipe for Dal Bhat . I never had it before and it is really delicious !! I really learn a lot for from you. You helped me so much with my canning as well . You guys are such an inspiration ! Thank you so much !
Thank you for reminding me of a childhood memory when I first tried Dal Soup. I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and my dad had a coworker from India who had invited us for dinner at his home. I was about 10 years old so there was a bag from McDonalds for me if I didn't like the food, but that wasn't a problem. I loved it and particularly the Dal. It sparked my love of global food.
So. I took the plunge and bought one for emergency preparedness. It's awesome for day to day also. Doesn't cost a dime to cook and my kitchen isn't heated up in the summer with the air unit running more to combat the added heat source. Pays for itself. It's also insurance. At this point with covid craziness and the election in Nov, and what might come from THAT, 😳I sleep better having it and not needing it, than IF I need it and don't have it. Just sayin. Well made, solid product. 👍👍
I just bought one today. I can’t wait for it to arrive. I’ve been wanting it for a while. What was the first thing you cooked? I’m thinking mine will probably be blueberry muffins or cornbread.
@@advancedrescue4083 A roast with potatoes, carrots and gravy. Was excellent! The only thing that is challenging was finding the right spot on my property with full sun and a flat-ish spot. Enjoy your investment. Blessings! 🤗
all lentils, beans, pulses, peas, all of them cook dramatically faster and more thoroughly without salt and any acids during cooking. So I always cook mine that way and combine at the end. You might try that and save tons of time.
I've had a Sun Oven for four years. I just made your recipe for dal bhat and it is in the oven cooking. My kitchen is full of the most wonderful aromas. I look forward to more recipes.
I loved this video! We have had a Sun Oven for quite a while and I was a little intimidated by it. We watched your video and it gave us a boost of confidence to give it a try. When I saw you cooking dal bhat I was very excited. Our son lived in Nepal for a couple of winters and not only became good friends with the people there, he learned to speak the language. He introduced me to their native cooking at a restaurant in Vermont where he lives. It was such fun and I loved it. I cannot wait to try this. Thank you.
I make Dal all the time - thanks for the added information on it's nutritional value and application as a 'prepper' meal. Having just a few ingredients stored in large quantities for a few nourishing recipes makes creating a prepper pantry less daunting. We have a wood cook stove but a sun oven makes a lot of sense for summer use and for times when having smoke wouldn't be desirable. Thanks again, guys!
The base of it is the same, I just change it up depending on what I'm in the mood for - Sometimes I add curry and coconut milk, sometimes I sub in chickpeas for the lentils. I even have thrown in a handful of raisins in to add sweetness. The kids were around when I watched your video and now it looks like that's what I'm making for supper tonight!
Hi Jaime, Wow! I have been using my sun oven for over 20 years but this is the first time I have seen that double cook pot! Very cool! Other recipes I have made in the sun oven is cookies, pizza, pot roast, roasted veggies, chili, spaghetti sauce, lasagna, bread, biscuits and 20 years of anything else you can cook in your normal oven. Absolutely the best thing ever! Especially when you factor in not using any electricity and not heating up your house in the hot summer. Thanks Jaime! You rock!
I just took this meal out of the sun oven and it turned out great. I adjusted the recipe a bit. I added a Shredded carrots, 2 cans of diced tomatoes rather than one, 1/2 green bell pepper and 1 stock of celery chopped, and one can of kidney beans. I also made Brown rice rather then the white. We both put a little Sriracha hot sauce on top for a little kick. Love this and will make it again for sure. Also, my kitchen is still nice and cool, thanks to my sun oven.
you will love the sun oven even in winter. have used mine at 6000 ft in winter and it works just as good as summer at 2000 feet. just had to smile when I saw yours. keep up the good work, love your Chanel. Gavin
I'm definitely trying this recipe. I appreciate the way you "teach" as you demonstrate cooking, canning and homesteading methods. I always enjoy your videos.
So I watched this video this afternoon then I watched it again wrote down the recipe and made it. It’s amazing! Seriously my new favorite! Thank you! I am so glad I found your channel!!
Thank you for your postings. I have enjoyed watching your home stead journey. I am going to try this recipe out soon in a stacked dutch oven configuration. I just ordered a Sun Oven this week for my wife's birthday. Thank you again, Rob S. (Rockford MI)
I made one from a box and window pane and was so surprised at how well it worked that I invested in a Sun Oven. I've had mine for a couple of years. I love it.
I watched this video during my lunch at work today and was so inspired to try it. Came home and did it straight away. It tasted fantastic! My husband does not do vegetarian and he loved it! Thank you, thank you! This recipe is a keeper.
Very much looking forward to more videos on this sun oven. I just used mine today for the first time. Cooked a whole chicken that turned out so juicy and so yummy! It’s only 66 degrees here today, but sunny.
Thanks for sharing the cost comparison versus running your oven. That's helpful. I've been thinking about getting one, but the cost has held me back so far. Thanks for another great video. God bless you.
We love our sun oven. In the winter up north sometimes it is necessary to add more length to the rear stand to get the proper sun alignment. That also means an extra weight to keep it from tipping. I put a frozen chicken in a pot with onions and potatoes in February and baked it for about three hours adjusting the angle every 30-40 min. Result was great!
Great Video! The Sun Oven seems amazing I really should get one, I get some intense sun/heat on my balcony. The Dal Bhat looks delicious and simple! I'm going to make it tomorrow! I've just gotta have some! :) Thanks Jaime!
Our family lived in India for about a year, so I do a lot of Indian cooking. (We had a cook while in India, and I had him teach me how to make our favorite things, plus I use a lot of cookbooks, and also wing it.) We live in a townhouse so don't have much of a yard to speak of so I'm not sure we'd get enough sun on our little patio, but I'd love to give this a try.
Love the Sun Oven...makes Great roast with potatoes and carrots!! Baked potatoes..delish ....We have a natural gas stove/oven and during the Summer it is OFF LIMITS...BBQ.....Grill...Sun Oven....Camp stove....Microwave...Crock Pot are what we use as an alternative....I REFUSE to have an open flame burning in my house in the Summer to make my AC run more and jack up my electric bill...and make it miserable to sleep at night. Plus if SHTF... I have the knowledge to adapt to feed my Family.
I am starting a Prepper Pantry, and thank you for sharing this recipe. From other videos, I know you have considerable experience in canning, but what about dehydrating foods. After comparing the two methods, I reasoned that, even after the new 18 month storage capability of canning jars, I was still ahead by dehydrating food. Experts claim a 15 year storage capacity for dehydrated food without loss of nutrients. Also, dehydration requires less labor than canning, and uses far less storage space. I made a minimal investment in a dehydrator, canning jars, oxygen packs, plus an air extractor. True; I haven't re-hydrated and eaten my this food yet, and hope I do not have to 'eat' my words. Using my Ball amber-tinted canning jar of dehydrated ingredients, the Dal Bhat will be a first attempt for a prepper meal, and if all goes well not the last.
First, thank you for posting all of your videos. I've watched several of them, from your canning videos to your chicken videos to your Nepal story video as well as your laundry in a bucket video and now this sun oven video. If there. Is ever a time when you start to think maybe you shouldn't make videos for one reason or another, let me quash those thoughts right now. Keep posting videos. It really will be a help to me when I get around to purchasing a canner-pressure cooker and a sun oven.
Ahh!! I just got the same Sun Oven for Christmas and I cannot wait to try it! This is a fantastic recipe; I love each and every ingredient!! I'm absolutely going to try this very, very soon. Hooray!!
The thing with the sun oven would be I imagine that cooking smells are contained and with no smoke to give you away it would be great if you were wanting to bug out with some stelth
Iv never heard of a sun oven before its a great thing to have if you got no power on line , Im glade im watching all the videos from the start a part from first one winter storm snow and it look so nice to eat its making my mouth water
Hey Guys great video, I love the sun oven for full meals. I Have a wide mouth Mason Jar that is powder coated flat black ( you could just spray paint it too) that I take to work and cook single meals for lunch, it works to actually cook food on a really sunny day, and is amazing to reheat leftovers for a single serving. Keep the great videos coming. Cheers
I live in Arizona and we hardly ever use the oven in the summer. I am getting me one of these. The only downside I can foresee is having to go outside into the heat to move it, but that is totally worth it.
I just ordered one and used your coupon! Thank you! Love your channel! I just got my first bunch of hens, too. They are only 3 weeks old. Thank you for your inspiration!
I use about the same herbs and spices in my curry bean and rice soup. I use an electric pressure cooker to cook mine. I am on grid and do not have sun for most of the day.
bought one and love it. It doesn't make the pots and pans black like a fire will. I have a set of pots and pans just for the fire. I'll make some Dal...good idea.
Hi mam, i am from south india. One humble suggestion, before cooking rice and dhall sock for hour or so they will cook extremly good. Thanks good day. From my experince. FYI
Really great video. Definitely saving the recipe to try when my daughter in law visits, she is Indian and a vegetarian. I'm always looking for recipes for her, I'm so excited about this. Thanks again 🙏🏻🤗🐓🤠
Just finished eating this. Made with lentils. Very very tasty. I cooked it in the thermal Cooker. Has two layers so did the rice at the same time. I think my lentils are getting old though. They were still crunchy. I will definitely make this again. I haved the recipe for the two of us. Will have it for another meal even doing that. Thanks for sharing.
Really great! I cant wait to try your recipe! Wonderful presentation. I would be interested in your winter experiences. Our winters have lots of grey days with overcast skies. I wonder if the sun oven would work or not. Thanks!
Time to take mine out of the box. We have rain for most of the week but this weekend should be clear. Thank you for putting the recipe in the comments section too!
Great video. Can't wait until I get one. Our electric stove isn't very efficient. We cook a lot of rice and vegetable soup. My wife likes pot roast. Want to try some gluten free bread and a coffee cake.
I'll be trying this soon. Love love ur videos. "You're weird"...lol. no sweetheart, you're unique. I love watching the kids participate in ur videos. Cute family. And the sunoven videos will probably make me want to raise "purchasing a sunoven priority" higher on my list.
If I ate carbs, I'd make this, because the flavours sound so good. I'm sure I could use that combo in other dishes, and I will. I used those flavours in days gone by, but somehow had forgotten! Now my mouth is watering. I can't wait to see you using that at your new house on the mountain!
I’ve been thinking about getting one, You just convinced me. Ordered! Thanks for the strait forward example! Plus your kid is Funny “THIS IS HOW CHICKENS BLINK” 😆😆😆
I got a sunoven a while back and have enjoyed using it. I really liked this episode and I plan to use this recipe in the spring. I think adding periodic solar oven recipes would be a great addition to the channel. Thanks!
Jamie I want to thank you for demonstrating the setting up of the son of it I must have watched Doug and Stacy's videos on the son of in 15 times and I never truly understood the setup process of the Sun Oven thank you so very much I appreciate it PS I finally got around to Cannon that hundred pounds of beef that I was talking to you about you are absolutely right took me better than two days and I was so glad to be done with that but I think it's well worth it thanks again for the demonstration of the Sun Oven talk to you again later bye
thanks Jamie. Watched your video last night and made Dal Bhat this morning. Turned out we had everything in the pantry to do so. Took about thirty minutes on the stove. Had some for lunch and an afternoon snack. not bad. was worried that it might be to spicy for me, but not an issue. sending some to my daughter who's had it before as she had college roommates from Napal. we'll see how mine stacks up against theirs. thanks for sharing. always a challenge to try new things. I'm usually not very adventurous.
Awesome, thank you! I have the same sun oven. I am currently working on this recipe for tonight's dinner! Just put the oven out to warm up! Thanks again so much!
Great video! Not only a new recipe to try but learned more about a sun oven! I honestly never knew you could really cook in them! I mean I thought they were just those little "fun things" (think an adult version of an easy bake oven)!
Very functional and Cool. I use outdoor clay ovens and pit grilling and cooking. I am Def. going to pick up one of these. I also cook many type of Indian\Eastern dishes. I am very impressed on how this turned out. And YES Dal Bhat is a fantastic meal :) . Great channel. Keep them coming.
Love this going to give this a try, I'm an Aussie and mine cost me a fortune, have cooked quite a bit. I want to try bread love to see your videos on the sun oven
Awesome dish! I will definitely going to try to cook it, we have a similar dish with yellow lentils and we eat with bread, but the rice will be great with it. Thanks for the amazing videos
As soon as things cool down a bit, I want to try this. The sun oven will come later, but I think this would be easy to cook on the stove. Thanks for making such great videos. Your subs are growing fast and it's easy to see why.
Follow our off grid cooking journey on our playlist here: goo.gl/utKFDr and be sure to use the link in the description for $70 off a Sun Oven. Enjoy!

Hi...I've really enjoyed watching your videos...they are so informative and interesting. I've just watched the daal bhat video...I'm so impressed at how it cooked in the sun oven. I'm from England and my parents originate from Pakistan. ..daal is one of the most commonly eaten dishes in our homes. ..try adding coriander at the end ..it takes the daal to another level! ..if it's watery just add some corn flour to thicken. People travel to the States to see New York or go to Disneyland. ..I want to come and visit your place! ! And on the same note you're more than welcome to the UK. :)
Keep on with the videos.

A new company took over and they redid their website so the links no longer work. I think it’s still the same product though.
Hi Jamie, I'm having trouble finding your Sun Oven anywhere online (probably my fault). You stated that another company is now producing it. Do you happen to know the name of that company? Thanks for your time!
I built my own solar oven today.
A few days ago I got on amazon and order some flexible acrylic mirrors. They are dirt cheap.
When they arrived today I then went to Dollar General and bought a cheap styrofoam ice chest which had some angles to it which would capture more sunlight. And I also bought a couple of cheap photograph frames with glass.
I then went home and used a razor knife to cut off one side of the styrofoam ice chest.
Then I stuck the acrylic mirrors to the remaing walls and bottom of the ice chest.
Then I used the glass from the picture frames for the front and top of the oven.
VOIALA!!!
25 bucks at most.
Call me McGyver - but it works. 😊
Probably won't get as hot as a Sun Oven in this video, but if I doubled up on the styrofoam, and made it larger to capture more sunlight, and sealed it up really well with some high temperature caulk or silicon -- I am 100 percent certain that it will hit 300 to 400 degrees.
You should make a video!

Cheers
That’s a great idea!
Dal Baht looks delicious ,I will make me some. Thank you for the video.
I live in Arizona and we hardly ever use the oven in the summer. I am getting me one of these. The only downside I can foresee is having to go outside into the heat to move it, but that is totally worth it.
+Mackenzie Freya Teo - $70 off!! Check out the link.
I love lentils..will make this today..looks yummy
I just ordered one and used your coupon! Thank you! Love your channel! I just got my first bunch of hens, too. They are only 3 weeks old. Thank you for your inspiration!
+Pamela Wilcox - Awesome! You’ll love it!
Rice&Lentils
Feel free to share your version/s as well!
WHERE CAN ONE BUY ONE ? AND WHT IS THE PRICE?
Wonderful to know about alternative ways to cook these scary days.
I tried recipe in the crock pot because I’m still waiting for my sun oven. It was very good and filling. A great pre test of recipe. Great Job!!!!!
Hi mam, i am from south india. One humble suggestion, before cooking rice and dhall sock for hour or so they will cook extremly good. Thanks good day.
From my experince. FYI
I make this too. Inexpensive filling and tasty. I look forward to trying a sun oven.
Really great video. Definitely saving the recipe to try when my daughter in law visits, she is Indian and a vegetarian. I'm always looking for recipes for her, I'm so excited about this. Thanks again 🙏🏻🤗🐓🤠
Be sure to let us know how she likes it 😊
That looks so Good, set it and forget it. Need to try this one
Thanks for sharing
Just finished eating this. Made with lentils. Very very tasty. I cooked it in the thermal Cooker. Has two layers so did the rice at the same time. I think my lentils are getting old though. They were still crunchy. I will definitely make this again. I haved the recipe for the two of us. Will have it for another meal even doing that. Thanks for sharing.
Some lentils take longer. Yellow and red cook the fastest
Really great! I cant wait to try your recipe! Wonderful presentation. I would be interested in your winter experiences. Our winters have lots of grey days with overcast skies. I wonder if the sun oven would work or not. Thanks!
You are such an inspiring modern day 'Laura Croft' it is unreal. Thanks for sharing so many useful tips. Subscribed.
This looks so delicious! It looks like a similar African dish I have tried before. Will be cooking this tomorrow for dinner!
Time to take mine out of the box. We have rain for most of the week but this weekend should be clear. Thank you for putting the recipe in the comments section too!
Let us know how you like it!
+Dawn Gowan - She IS weird! 😂 And if you are considering a sun oven they hooked us up with big discounts for everyone. Link in the description.
Thanks!
That looks amazing. Mine is on its way soon! They’re back ordered
I just bought one today... my son ordered it on Amazon.
+Travis Graham - 👍🏻
Love the chicken blink, made me lol, thanks!!
This recipe looks fantastic. Going to try it this week.
Looks delicious !! Love the sun oven's !! Thanks for sharing
This is wonderful I've been looking into sun ovens
Very good video thanks for sharing your knowledge with us
Thanks so much.... would love more vids using legumes in the sunoven!!! ( I've been craving them lately😁)
thanks Jamie.
So glad you tried it! Let us know what your daughter thinks 😊
Love the recipe and sun oven
Don't have a sun oven, but definitely trying that dish, looks great!!! 👍👍👍
Just make it on a stovetop or crockpot 😉
Awesome, thank you! I have the same sun oven. I am currently working on this recipe for tonight's dinner! Just put the oven out to warm up! Thanks again so much!
Great video! Not only a new recipe to try but learned more about a sun oven! I honestly never knew you could really cook in them! I mean I thought they were just those little "fun things" (think an adult version of an easy bake oven)!
Nope they are legit. I baked bread in it a couple days ago
+JUAN GRANDE - 👍🏻😊
That is the coolest thing ever!!! I need a sun oven!! Lol I just think that's amazing you can cook with just the sun!!!
Love this going to give this a try, I'm an Aussie and mine cost me a fortune, have cooked quite a bit. I want to try bread love to see your videos on the sun oven
Bread was one of the first things we tried. I will probably do a video on it soon :0)
Jen Goods
Just made that on the stove....4 days of clouds and rain here. Tasty
Great choice on protein and carb. The content really does match the title. Thank you!
Awesome dish! I will definitely going to try to cook it, we have a similar dish with yellow lentils and we eat with bread, but the rice will be great with it. Thanks for the amazing videos
Feel free to share any tips!
As soon as things cool down a bit, I want to try this. The sun oven will come later, but I think this would be easy to cook on the stove. Thanks for making such great videos. Your subs are growing fast and it's easy to see why.
It is easy to cook on a stove or crockpot. Just know some lentils or peas take longer. Let us know how you like it!
