Everyone asking how did they ended up here and saying that it was on their recommended page but here I am, sipping tea, knowing that I searched up “gay short film”
There is a lot of speculation on the older gentleman's sexuality, but I don't even think his sexuality matters here. He loved his wife, obviously, and now he is alone, and very lonely. They never had children, and so there is no one close enough to him to take care of his needs. People need to be heard, and they need to be touched. This was about the need for companionship, and the kiss at the end was just so lovely, but still so sad. The older gentleman obviously does not want the night/fantasy to end. I work in retail customer service, and I will often get older men and women who come in and chat me up for way longer than I am supposed to spend with a customer, but I will never cut them off. Many of them are lonely and just need human interaction.
I totally agree with this. I also worked in retail in a part of town with an older demographic. Our manager actively encouraged long conversations with customers because she knew what it could be like for some of our customers. Most of the time, they just want a chat about anything and everything and a lot of the time it was a good laugh.
Thank you for your comment. Im just crying and really sad after this video, thinking about how many old people are lonely and tired, and they just would like to feel love.
@SAD GAMER When I said people need to be touched, I wasn't speaking of sexual touch. Just a hug is so important. Just any kind of physical touch. I won't get into discussion on the sex industry here, but obviously human trafficking is the most horrendous act of cruelty in our world. I don't think this film was touching on that, however.
I've honestly been wondering aloud, how can he be more beautiful than any woman and more handsome than any man, and also funny on the internet?? Could just break your heart
Agreed. It’s so weird, him and cole I wouldn’t say when you think of sexiest man alive, but yet they are incredibly beautiful and incredibly handsome. I think they both have charm that definitely adds to the allure. Watching Cole on Tv, I’m often like yea I mean he is a good looking human and then sometimes I’m like damn that dude is smoldering. Sprouse twins are my childhood and I’m just so happy to see them both on the screen again 💕
Arrianna Imbriano I know. A bit tragic that they both have short hair again. But I do like it better short on Cole. I think I do on Dylan as well. But I don’t mind it long.
It’s so beautiful how this film shows the complexity of grief and intimacy. At the end you can really feel the man trying to keep the feeling of intimacy going (almost like he’s getting attached) and the escort actively trying to keep a professional distance while still being caring and compassionate. I can only imagine how hard it must be to keep that balance when you do this as your actual job. Beautifully portrayed❤️
Pro domme here. It definitely is difficult to keep the balance. But the job is often so rewarding. Knowing, that I’m often the only one, who knows my clients’ deepest secret and seeing their vulnerability feels like such an honor. They portrayed the nuances so well.
I feel like a lot of people are missing a part of the story, the escort also likes his job, while a paycheck is a necessity, he thrives off of giving people a happy ending.

Everyone’s talking about Dylan. But I really think the old man needs some attention as well. I almost cried when he started talking about how old he was and how tired he was at the table.
Curious, nice one and if you see the scene this way, well, flirting is part of life force, Eros, and there seems a powerplay there - notice the body language, how he asks for the pen but more challenging him to say no and how he plays with it - where Death, Thanatos, is the real daddy. The dynamics of the power/Freudian/playful/gay-roleplay meanings of this problem word play out. If it seems far fetched please see www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2016/08/22/what-is-the-daddy-meme-and-why-are-actual-adults-fighting-about-it/ which is referenced by the director in www.interviewmagazine.com/film/dylan-sprouse-christian-coppola-daddy Of course, this doesn't contradict the interpretation that the hustler is simply on duty, on the clock, so he has to be professional, and all this power struggle represents his will effort.
Dylan is not known to shy away from sexually charged roles (nor does his brother). What a surprising ride -- he always gives a stellar performance. Wow.
Agreed, indeed. It concurs with the symbolism of black in the movie to suggest that the escort is, to all effects, Death for Mr Smith, first as he sees in him his dead wife as he dances transcending the mundane into La Dance Macabre, followed by all the other simbolic references... The escort's look also recalls to mind Joe Dallessandro, who played a hustler in Warhol's Flesh, although most of the work was done by Paul Morrissey. See image at en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesh_(1968_film). Isn't it curiously coincidental that in the picture Paul seems to refer to Joe Dallessandro who resembles Dylan? Each one maintains their singularity let us be clear and this might just be pareidolia, yet the generality of the old man's surname, Smith, may refer to many recognising themselves into him. Anyway I digress, the escort' s outfit is a proper daddy's outfit.
@@christinam.98 Thanks, though I don't think I know much really, it is more my view based on what I see in the movie. For instance it seems the director repeats or strengthens a clue to suggest it is not coincidental, like when extinguishing a candle is seen again in the movie-within-movie near the end where there is a bed_scene-within-a bed_scene, lol, with the additional meaning of going to sleep=dying accompanied by even further clues... Yet my view is arguable, which is befitting, because I think a purpose of the movie is to show how being human means to live in a world which is ambiguous and polivalent but rather than fearing the confusion and so retreating into the shortcuts of prejudice and stereotyping, we can also ask our own questions, and sometimes asking the right question is more important than find a "definitive" answer.
@@footballprimex8135 I assume you are being hyperbolic in your answer. What reference is it not clear, or is it nothing at all you understand of what I say? Have you understood the movie or made any sense of it?
Seeing Sprouse in a dress just kept me smiling throughout the whole thing. He’s amazingly masculine and feminine, and just - UHH. Gorgeous. I love the whole thing; the acting, the scenery, the story.
How was this simultaneously so tender and so sinister. Especially the way his face and body language change right at the end as he’s walking towards the elevator then facing the doors. The gentleness disappears and is replaced by... something
I think its either the kiss of death interpretation, that death as seduced another soul. But also that the escort is his own person beyond the act he played with his client--the client didn't see him as his own self, which can make a person feel dehumanized-yet in the end he played him as well
I just love his face there. For me, it was really encapsulating another side of death - I mean we are so mean to death, so fearful and hateful of it. So angry at it. But without it there would be less meaning to life. There is beauty in it, and Dylan is both the beauty in it and the "taken for granted" seduction of it.
Many of us forget that we too will grow old. It’s important to empathize with and support the elderly. Too many have been forgotten and thrown away by society.
If we're lucky to have survived our yesterdays, maybe, just maybe our tomorrows will deliver on our collected wisdom, to guide us into news ways of thought as well as technology; but in the end, today is all we have, really. Live it well and with little regret as possible.
Dylan is Death. He gave the old man the literal “kiss of death”. Death is SUPPOSED to be sweet. A release. So of course the old man enjoyed his last moments. For those who are confused.
@@HG-qo9cx elaborate. How does the transgender community care about stereotypes and how are they uncomfortable with their sexuality and gender. If you're going to be transphobic atleast make sense.
Dylan was a real seducer. Gentle yet detached. Tender yet cold. And ron rifkin was phenomenal. The emotions of desparation and lust was remarkable. Made me tear up.
this really hit hard. I was in a a Gay relationship with an older man in for 30 years. he sadly died in 2020. I was crying hard on the dance scene, because he and I used to dance to Patsy Cline's song "Crazy " in the kitchen and at a Gay bar a few towns over. it was Our song 😭
Dylan has no shame and actually looks good in a dress. Sorry if that sounds disrespectful it wasn’t meant to be by no shame I meant he doesn’t have toxic masculinity.
i adore the imagery of this short film and how much symbolism is left for the viewer to figure out and interpret in their own way. very interesting and touching
Did you see London’s mom in the lift? She looks amazing. I guess Wilfred Tipton is still too busy as well as Mr Moseby, cause we sadly weren’t able to see them. :)
My friend met an old guy at a restaurant once who lost his daughter when she was 22 , he told my friend she was so similar to his daughter with tears in his eyes and showed her a picture, it was really really similar like doppelgangers or nina dobrev and victoria justice lol, he asked if they could eat together on the same table since both of them were alone and my friend said yes, he had also lost his wife and was alone, he paid for my friend and she never saw him again but sometimes she thinks about that day. Sometimes people are just lonely and seeking company of another person or they want to feel like they felt before when they had their loved ones around them.
The same thing happened to my grandmother, when she was younger she was walking into a store and a guy was following her, shortly after she noticed she went to the pharmacy and told a woman and the man walked up to her and said "I'm so sorry if It felt like I was following you, are you a "her last name" and she said yes, and he said "I knew it, you look just like a girl I used to date who died in a car crash" and my grandmother mentioned her cousin and after that they sat and talked and the guy was close to crying because he said he thought she was his gfs ghost and he said as long as my grandmother lived so did she..
I have paid for customer's in my check out line because they looked like mother. I should have been fired for that, but I honestly think my job felt sorry and let me still do it. I love listening to heartwarming stories like these
This short film has a better, more profound story and touches me on a deeper emotional level than anything Hollywood has brought out in the last 9 years.
Spectacular! Exactly what a short film should be. Rifkin and Sprouse were perfectly cast and have the acting chops to pull this off gracefully, with style and dignity. The story is lovely and unique, and even the support cast had moments to shine. Production values are on par with any major studio feature film. Thank you, Christian for making this piece. While most of the comments seem to revolve around Sprouse, and refer to Rifkin as “the old man”, I think that’s a reflection of the general age group of UA-camrs. Rifkin is a veteran actor of over 55 years on stage, TV, and film. He is a Tony Award winning actor, with multiple Tony, Emmy and other nominations, and he is the focal point of this film, I.e. “Daddy”. He has the acting skills to create the space in which others can shine. Kudos to all - cast and crew - for a beautiful creation.
@@kaira5748 typically when you use "androgynous" to describe someone, it means they can appear to be both male and female or you can't tell whether they are male/female. Dylan clearly looks like a dude wearing a dress in this so I though your comment was odd

Honestly, the possibility of Dylan's character being death makes so much sense once I remembered the song they danced to was "we'll meet again." Which could be literal, that he will meet his wife again, very soon.
I would have liked to see him completely ignore the hotel guy hitting on him. His character was super sensitive to what the older man needed and it seemed out of character that he'd flirt with someone else while in a role with a client
@@treeified0987 Dylon was fulfilling a service. In that situation he is feeling out what the older gentleman is wanting, which could be a little kinky, so he commented on the hotel service boys jaw line, but the old man wasn’t interested. It was a delicate dance of figuring out what this man had hired him for. During the dream sequence where the man is dancing with his wife, you see Dylon watch and kind of nod with understanding. This is when Dylon really sees what this man is wanting and longing for. He shortly fulfills that need with convincing faux reciprocation, and left richer for it. You could see Dylons character as a compassionate character at this point until the very end in the elevator, when he smiles, then you understand he had preyed on this mans loneliness.
@@bellerieart2128 preyed on his loneliness? I don't see that, he provided a service and got paid for it. to me it seemed pretty therapeutic... the emotional labor of what he was doing for that man was pretty intense.
I agree, but I think it sort of hits harder as a short. The emotion and detailed meanings are so carefully planned. Its like an art piece. Art doesn't need to be explained, as we all see it in a different light. I would be interested to know why a male, what happened to his wife, and so on, but its so much deeper when you don't know. So beautiful. Got me crying big ass tears man.
he's literally just wearing a dress but he is one of the most beautiful people I've ever seen in a dress the way he plays this character is strikingly seductive and mysterious he looks like he enjoys it but mainly enjoys what it brings to others like the older gentleman he's to the point as another comment stated but also shows compassion under it

@@ant6126 Memento mori
Curious, nice one and if you see the scene this way, well, flirting is part of life force, Eros, and there seems a powerplay there - notice the body language, how he asks for the pen but more challenging him to say no and how he plays with it - where Death, Thanatos, is the real daddy. The dynamics of the power/Freudian/playful/gay-roleplay meanings of this problem word play out. If it seems far fetched please see www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2016/08/22/what-is-the-daddy-meme-and-why-are-actual-adults-fighting-about-it/ which is referenced by the director in
www.interviewmagazine.com/film/dylan-sprouse-christian-coppola-daddy
Of course, this doesn't contradict the interpretation that the hustler is simply on duty, on the clock, so he has to be professional, and all this power struggle represents his will effort.
Ron Rifkin is as always an actor's actor, perfection in style and skill. He captures it all. A director's dream. Stay well Mr. Rifkin.

Is this Dylan sprouse ???
So nobody’s gonna tell about how brilliant Cooper Koch was in that though his screen presence was just for few minutes 😍
okay lets talk about how that full black outfit was such a fit and he looked so hot
@@emiliogonzaga7445 wow you know a lot :)

How was this simultaneously so tender and so sinister. Especially the way his face and body language change right at the end as he’s walking towards the elevator then facing the doors. The gentleness disappears and is replaced by... something
I think its either the kiss of death interpretation, that death as seduced another soul. But also that the escort is his own person beyond the act he played with his client--the client didn't see him as his own self, which can make a person feel dehumanized-yet in the end he played him as well
Dylan is genuinely such a good actor
You see a glimpse of it when they talk about "the others"
I just love his face there. For me, it was really encapsulating another side of death - I mean we are so mean to death, so fearful and hateful of it. So angry at it. But without it there would be less meaning to life. There is beauty in it, and Dylan is both the beauty in it and the "taken for granted" seduction of it.

This should be a whole movie instead of just a short film.
Not really... I think that a bigger timing would take the magic away.
I agree, but I think it sort of hits harder as a short. The emotion and detailed meanings are so carefully planned. Its like an art piece.
