Thank you for publishing your techniques. I was able to determine that the head stock on my horizontal mill was tilted so I shimmed it into alignment. I thought I would have to rescrape the ways on the base but they are in good condition. I look forward to more inspections and solutions.

Thank you so much for sharing this. As a poor hobby machinist I have always despaired that I do not have expensive equipment to check my machines. To see you produce accuracy better than many very expensive tools with the same kind of equipment I have in my shop is a revelation. I knew someone at sometime in the past must have done this, but how? I have one question, the face plate you use, how was that accurate front face created? Or does that face not have to be accurate to start? Thank you again Gena, our thoughts and prayers from America.

Instead of making a sharp cutting tool of hard material, could you use a grinding tool (even harder material)? Angle grinder or similar...

I'm trying to find a more easily implementable technology. If I had a sanding attachment, I would most likely sharpen metal rulers. I started with this, but the vibrations of the cutter made me look for a replacement for metal.

Angle grinders have terrible bad bearings, so they should be kept out when doing anything precise. High precision toolpost grinder could do the job but then everything should be protected from grinding dust.
I once tested tailstock alignment by dipping calibration bar into hard paraffin wax, meant for coat ski's. It will machine very precisely and with small cutting forces, but wasn't hard enough for indicator. In this application it could work, especially when using flat tip on indicator.

I wonder.... Could you put a front surface mirror on each axis, to make a retroreflector optical path, shoot a laser into the retroreflector and check for parallelism of the beams...over some distance, one should be able to determine rather small angular deviation...kind of like a 3d autocollimator?
If I am totally confused, please correct my misunderstanding ;-)

You can come up with different methods of monitoring the state of the machine. When I started looking for ways to get geometrically correct planes, the first thing I did was try using a laser. But it turned out that due to the diffraction of light, it cannot be used for accurate measurements. In addition to interference methods, but here it is just a light source of one wavelength.

Is that wood? Wood is not an accurate way of measuring precision. It significantly expands and contracts due to temperature, compression and humidity.

      Looked like Micarta - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micarta
Similar stuff to what circuit boards are made of

This is a gettinax, many layers of paper impregnated with polymer resin. suitable for this procedure. Doesn't vibrate. Hard.

Ah-ha...can even be used for gears...if my brain would work, I should know that name in English terminology!

Да уж, Гена.На английском то не особо подписчиков, чем на вражеском, да?)))
